Conlon Nancarrow joins the Communist party, fights in the Spanish Civil War, then is refused a US Passport when he tries to return to his native land. He moves to Mexico and spends the next 30 years composing impossibly intricate musical orchestrations that no orchestras can really play. Instead he doctors a few player-pianos to be able to play his music. He later gets a MacArthur fellowship for it.

Koby Abberton grows up in the rough-and-tumble Mourabra section of Sydney. His mom is addicted to heroin and he has no idea who his dad is. When he is twelve years old he walked in on his mom, her boyfriend and a bunch of their friends shooting up. He starts to yell at them to get out of his house. His mom's boyfriend hits him with a baseball bat and kicks him out. He never lives at home again. A few years ago Koby's brother is arrested for murdering an alleged rapist and murderer. Koby is arrested for obstructing justice because he supposedly lied to police officers about the situation. They're both looking at hard time but eventually are acquitted.

Dennis, you must have missed the teeny fish that were jumping in front of my board. Congrats on your 'narrel or mini barrel too. :)

Also a lot of popping up and standing still on the board as the wave comes to a screeching halt. Elusive south swell..just...out...of.....reach....

Anyone want to shoutout about knees? Anything. Left knee started hurting below and around the kneecap, it's also making popping sounds. This has never happened and it hurts to walk. Not good. When is it time to see a doc? Does damp fog bring this stuff out?

knees.......see a doc
one month ago i had $9800 worth of orthoscopic surgery to repair degenerative tears of the miniscus, he also shaved the backside of the patella ...and i feel fine
surfed the long board in miniscule waves 6 days after surgery and am now back on the short board ...however not running ...just biking.
partial tears of the miniscus caused swelling in the joint and pain that prevented running and hindered skiing this winter ... also kooked a few popups this winter due to sudden knee joint pain.
one doc suggested antiinflamatory meds like aleve everyday for 2 weeks to see if that provided relief...it did... but i ultimatley elected surgery .. because i didn't want to be popping pills the rest of my life

Intersting stream, E....glad to hear some people getting some little waves but I have a mean streak of shifts here. Strongly reccomend the Grail quest series by bernard Cromwell, takes place during the 100 years war and is an easy read, full of action and battle scenes yet very historically accurate with compelling characters."the archers tale " is the first. I guess I can read about a remote past war with delight yet hearing about the massacres in Iraq make me ashamed my country's foreign policy...disgusting.

on a brighter side, only a few days until the world cup, Forza Azzuri!

I've been experiencing knee pain this last year too. ugg on the surgery! but.. maybe it's time to see the doc. As soon as the back starts feeling better.. the knee flares up.. old age i guess.

Surfrider will have a table tonight at the "Save the Beach" party at the Underground SF, 424 Haight St at Webster. We are also getting a portion of the door proceeds, so come on by. There is an ocean themed art exhibit from 8-9:30pm, and music to follow.

Knee pain - I've had it come and go over the years, but never to the point of debilitation, and they haven't bothered me in years. Unless the pain is really bad, I'd first opt for the Aleve type therapy (booze with anti-inflamatories = kidney and liver failure), and maybe a little ice after surfing. I take glucosamine and chondroitin (two-in-one) tablets for my shoulders on occasion and they to help. The help lubricate the joint but it takes a couple weeks of daily pill popping to notice a difference. If those don't work, then see a Dr.

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, but I parked next to one once.

It could be something minor like patella tendonitis, if it's at the bottom/front of the kneecap extending down to the top of the shin (that little connector piece of tendon). This is minor and usually resolves on its own in 1 week or less (just rest it and pay close attention to the signals it gives you upon exertion). If you have deep pain centrally located in the knee structure, then you might have some issues.

I tend to injure my knee while sleeping, of all things. I turn one way, the lower leg gets stuck/anchored in one position under some rumpled blankets, then points back the other way as I roll over (or something, I'm unconscious so who knows) and just like that I wake up injured. Super f-ing annoying because it is impossible to prevent and you feel like a retard for hurting yourself while sleeping.

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor but I passed one on the sidewalk earlier today.

Anyone like Pinback? I saw them last night at Bimbo's and they played a pretty solid show! One of the singers is from Three Mile Pilot. Dunno if any of you know these bands, but it was neat.

Anyone get whitey vibes this morning. Seal on the beach with bite on its hind quarter. I think it went back in the water after being harrassed by dogs on the beach. Got bad-vibed by some irritable seals too. First a pair, then one travelling solo. Some bird shrieked in the fog. Sketchy morning surf. All the critters seemed to be uppity this a.m. Feeding going on all around me.

Hey Ian - how were the locals at ea_k_y?

Thanks for the Tip Limevoodoo. In case you prefer watching the Spanish version check this:

http://www.univision.com/content/channel.jhtml?chid=4&schid=328&secid=331

I do this mostly so that I don't have to listen to lame 'analysis' by US Commentators. But sometimes the quality of the picture is better on the spanish station. At least this was true for the recent warm-up friendlys. I believe for the actual cup games the stations will all be relying on pool feed so it shouldn't matter so much.

Bear in mind that the times listed for Univision is for when coverage begins and that may mean up to an hour of pregame hype.

GO CZECH REPUBLIC!

Great pics, Ian! I'd be that black dot in the center of the breaking wave in the last pic, thinking many curses.

Thanks for the knee comments.

Sharky vibes at 6:30 am? In the thick fog w/fishes and floating gangs of birds? Why no...uh...not at all! Nope. Uh...ah-yup, nothing whatsover...noooo....

dmc, everyone was cool! It was mainly traveling surfers from either out of town, or out of country, as far as I could tell at least. I'm not sure if you've been there--good ID on the photo, but the town is about one block long, and the bluff is full of camper vans and tents. I have a feeling it's more of a destination spot than a locals spot. However, I was only there for 3 days. But, in those three days I never felt bad vibes or anything. I think most of the rippers (and if there are any locals) surf the right, which blows the left out of the water. Thanks for the compliments guys! Watch out Mexi and Artifact, here I come! Hehe..
