catching waves.

A light southerly breeze.
A late sunrise.
A mysterious mist hanging over the ocean.
Fog horns bellow.
Clean, bracing, cold water.
Stave off the ice-cream headache.
Finally get out there after 8467 duckdives.
Some shapely peaks.
A bit of warble.
Lock into a few.
Lefts mostly.
Orchestrated a vertical-esque backhand off-the-top but of course kookishly fell off the back of the wave.
I suck!
A few character-rich dredgers came through.
A few birds catching their breakfast, diving into the water and frolicking about.
Cool, misty, still solitude in mamma Pacific.
Left Lerm out there hunting for his.
35 minute session. 6 rides.
Thanks to my body for allowing me to surf and swim in the ocean.
Thanks to my parents and my education for setting me up with a bit of free time to explore surfing.
Thanks to this wonderful city for providing a huge beach and myriad activities/jobs/people/beauty.
Thanks to the universal source for granting self-reflective consciousness to us hairless apes.

I made it out with only 8463 duckdives! Unreal ratio of paddle difficulty for wave size. Traded boards with Dennis - we both have comparable sized Merricks, his had original fins, mine has rotating rail fins. So, today, I got to see how the other half lives. Caught bunches of waves, mostly lefts, and ended up with a 4 block walk back to the starting point. Weird combination of swell, sandbar, and tide.

Posted by: mig at October 19, 2005 10:19 AM

You suck? No, I suck. One not so good wave under my belt this am but it was on the rotating fin board. Not much of a test with the one wave I caught but it had a unique feel to it. I guess a bit more free. To me it felt sorta like a single fin but more drive off the bottom.

Anyway, I got hammered by an ousider and whacked my mouth on the board again duckdiving! This time though I had a mouth piece to protect my glued-in front teeth. Teeth are still in place but I got a big rasberry on my bottom lip. That made me gun-shy for the rest of the morning and I bailed a bunch of times rather than risk the inevitable. I need to go out again tonight and battle my demons.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- The author of a new state law that allows felony charges against owners of dangerous dogs was hospitalized over the weekend after his own dog attacked him.

Bob Schwartz, who also is Gov. Bill Richardson's crime adviser, was hospitalized at University of New Mexico Hospital on Sunday night with bites on both his arms, said Pahl Shipley, a spokesman for the governor.

A hospital spokeswoman declined to release Schwartz's condition, but Shipley said Schwartz is "going to be fine."

Surfer stable after shark bites leg

Michael Cabanatuan, Chronicle Staff Writer

Wednesday, October 19, 2005

(10-19) 12:15 p.m. BODEGA BAY -- A surfer at Salmon Creek State Beach near Bodega Bay was bitten in the leg by a shark this morning and taken by helicopter to a Santa Rosa hospital.

Lt. Roger Rude, spokesman for the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, said other surfers reported the attack at about 11 a.m. The department sent its helicopter to the scene.

The injured surfer was reportedly a man about 20 years old. Rude said he could not yet release his name.

The surfer was in stable condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with injuries to the leg, but no further details were available.

The incident took place in an area where previous shark attacks have taken place, Rude said.

"It's unusual, but not unexpected,'' he said.

Rangers, lifeguards and sheriff's deputies were advising people to vacate the beaches from Jenner to Bodega Bay, Rude said.

Yeah, bouldering has definitely exploded recently. I was at M-----n C----s last night, and the crowd was out of hand, fell trying to finish a V5 and almost hit a chick that was just chilling there on the mats. But, the huge options for outdoor climbing, and the much wider range of acceptable conditions, mean it will never experience the same crowd issues as surfing.

Plus, the only feeling that surpasses riding a slightly over-head, glassy, peeling concave wave is pussy or a good bj.

(10-19) 14:29 PDT BODEGA BAY -- A 20-year-old woman surfing at Salmon Creek Beach near Bodega Bay fought off an attacking shark this morning but was bitten in the right leg and taken by helicopter to a Santa Rosa hospital.

Brit Horn, a lifeguard at Sonoma Coast State Beach, which includes Salmon Creek, witnessed the attack while off duty and surfing at about 10:30 a.m. with about six or seven others in an area known as the Boardwalk near the south end of the beach.

"I heard her scream, looked over and saw a very large fin, and saw her go under water,'' Horn said. "Then the fin disappeared and she popped up along with her board.''

The woman told doctors at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital that she was lying on her surfboard when what she believes was a great white shark hit her. She fought it off, at one point while on its back, hospital spokeswoman Mary Brighton Borrelli said.

Horn and three other surfers rushed to help the woman, whom Horn knows only as "Megan." She was screaming, he said, and there was blood in the water but not very much. She did not appear to have any life-threatening wounds, he said.

Megan paddled back to shore, accompanied by the other surfers, who helped her to the beach and applied towels to dress the two wounds on her right leg, both of which were bleeding lightly.

Another surfer ran a half mile to the nearest road and drove to a phone to call 911. Bodega Bay paramedics arrived soon after, followed closely by the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department helicopter. Horn said the injured surfer never lost consciousness.

"She did very, very well at keeping her cool,'' he said.

The surfer remained in stable condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with five serious lacerations to the leg, and was undergoing tests, Brighton Borrelli said.

The incident took place in an area where previous shark attacks have occurred, Rude said. A shark attacked a Santa Rosa man in the same area about three years ago, Horn said. He said great white sharks are suspected in all of the attacks.

"It's unusual, but not unexpected,'' Rude said of the attack.

As a precaution, rangers, lifeguards and sheriff's deputies advised people to leave the beaches between Jenner and Bodega Bay, Rude said. The beach closures, which are standard after a shark attack, will last for five days, Horn said.

Neither law enforcement nor hospital officials would identify the victim, and she and her mother were declining to speak to the media.

But Horn described the woman as "one of the local female surfers. She's been surfing out here for a couple of years at least. I've seen her here surfing in the past, and expect to see her here in the future.''

Flap: climbing a V5 indoors is like a V3 outdoors. If you've been climbing more than 2 years regularly and can't finish at least a couple of indoor V5's, you're either under 5 ft, or really uncoordinated.

Also, never seen a tranny at lindy, as far a I know, I'll though I'll be the first to admit I would rather surf a 6 ft day there than a 12 ft day at OB.

Also: I get the feeling that E denigrates his own ability, from what I've seen he's been surfing almost every day at OB for the last 3 years. I bet he shreds. Fuck, I wish I had the time and will power to get out there every morning.

I despise those climbing gyms. Packed, loud, smelly full of spandex covered posing people. Then some 10-year old kid breezes up something you just grunted and struggled to make. "It was so gnar, did you see my fingerbar to V0 layback twist" Ug

Or maybe it's just cause I've never been a very technical climber and more enjoy the solitary experience of the mountains

Fortunately only small % of those gym sport climbers will ever grow the nuts to go climb a real trad or alpine climb. But even then it's getting crowded, and an interesting twist on localism is growing. The idea of style and ethics is more prevalent in the climbing community than any other.

Bouldering can be pretty fun and committing though. A very pure sport. I know almost as many people who've been fucked up bouldering as climbing. (Although usually you live)

Flap: "now you're dealing with danger"? I hope that's not an internet threat, because those are very funny and very sad at the same time. If it is, squeal away, I'll never meet you, whether you're 5 ft or 7ft.

All I was trying to say is that it was an indoor V5, which isn't all that impressive. I may be competent in both climbing and surfing, but I would never claim to be great at either. Good on you for surfing for 20 years though, and climbing for 5. I can only "claim" 10 and 2 myself.

I do try to climb out doors as much as I can, but haven't since I tore the ligiment in my thumb about a month ago while bouldering at C---- Rock. Friggin made me miss that huge south swell that hit, never forgive myself.

I agree artifact, the climbing gyms can really suck, but its still the most fun indoor sport around IMHO. Something to do when its dark out (besides the vertical bop, of course). Also, some of those chicks look pretty damn good in sweaty spandex.

Goat rock also has really fun bouldering and short top-roping. Saw this core bro free climbing 40 foot 5.10c's, unbelievable. He also surfs all the mystery spots up that way. Very cool guy, was smoking us out and giving us tips on the problems.

Also, I think I might know that meggan chick that got bit, although I though she was older than 20. If its her, she's very cool, and rips really hard, harder than me for sure.

Posted by: Many handles at October 19, 2005 03:53 PM

E, at least you are committed enough get out there waaay more than I and probably most people do. I don't think a master hacker is gonna fool anyone into thinking they are uncoordinated. You were in the bouldering mecca a couple of weeks ago.

Stinson is legit, a bigger secret to the nudists than the climbers. Probably the closest thing to what you're thinking 3to5. Most of the seaside cliffs around here are pretty chossy and eroded caked mud etc. Next year we'll head to the granite hills.

A V5 is like a 5.12D I couldn't get up either even if all the combined sharks at Stinson were chasing me up it- and I've been climbing for 10 years.

Yeah I always rip on gyms then go straight to outdoors trad and then am like- "Oh shit I should have gone to the gym more" Actually some dude fell like 90 feet from the top of MC's the other night- anyone catch that?

As someone who avoids angry locals like the plague, and in general, other surfers, I found surfing this past weekend at Lindy to be a bit of an eye-opening experience. Main things I took away from it is 1) way fewer landlord jitters with other surfers around 2) way more polite surfers with cute girls around 3) being able to go to take a poo in a clean bathroom is probably worth $3.

In other news, surf movie at Red Vic at 7:15 and 9:15 and Big Lou's Polka Casserole is playing Toronado's Octoberfest ($2.50 pints until 6). Angry locals who don't like crowds should avoid Toronado.

I also think blakestah is very brave for going near dennis. Either that or he has a good orthodontist. Dennis has bad dental karma; after reading his posts I brush my teeth with 4 leaf clovers.

I would never threaten anyone, anywhere, even here. I simply don't need to.

Posted by: flap at October 19, 2005 04:48 PM

Ratings in gyms are arbitrary. Some v5's are easier than some v3's. Doesn't really mean anything unless you climb a level on a regular basis. Outdoor bouldering is a totally other story, you have to add about 2 or 3 levels to what you're climbing in the gym.

went out south side of playa. fun and a bit tantalizing tried to fish it again and again the wrong board choice. dolphins and smoothness. Utter beauty ad not unlike a lovely woman left me frustrated and wanting more.

e, you stole *my* title again, barring the "surfing since 16 bit!"

If climbing gyms added some guys sitting on the roof pelting climbers w/pebbles [ an occasional boulder and rock slide for variety ], fluctuated the daily indoor temperature between freezing and blazing 100 plus , featured occasional rain and lighting bolts, and loosened -at random - some holds , heck maybe add a rattlesnake or two... that would put a wrench in the rating system, not to mention add some variety ;)

But this is a surfing forum. The 2 sports are very similiar though.

Surfer chick got bitten by a shark today at 11:30 at Salmon Creek Beach in Sonoma County. I was watching Riding Giants and then realized how fucking pussy i was for being afraid of an 8 foot face in comparison to these guys and riding 60 foot faces. Damn man.

brian,

no shit I get freaked at DOH OB and these dudes charged 30 footers on longboards leashless in the fifties!1 Its humbling when people in their 80's or long dead have surfed bigger and badder waves than I will ever comtemplate stroking into.

I looking into getting a board grown from GMO Yellow fin stem cells that hugs the rider like a lover while paddling out and can outswim the fastest predator.

Andrew - funny. My teeth are laying in a patch of four leaf clovers somewhere. Good news. Surfed tonight and still have the rest of my teeth.

One time at Salmon Creek i was trying to get over to the right side of the peak on a fat outside wave on my longboard and just flipped over backwards with the board on top of me. uggh
