no wind... but...
No wind and a smooth surface out there this morning.
A wee nip o swell showing itself.
But.. shit just wasn't working where i checked.
Smallish, longboardy, mushy peaks toward the outside.
Dumpy, closing-out, disgruntled shoredump on the inside.
It's probably more fun than it looked.
It's glassy in April!
I didn't see any takers.
I might go skate Alameda skate park on thursday morning. I've never skated a park before. I know most of you rip.. any pointers for a first-timer?
Sorry if i offended any strippers or stripper-fans with my anti strip-joint tirade yesterday. One of the things i did really enjoy about the strip club was the way the ladies can dance. Holy Bejeebus. This was in Miami so it might have been a Latina thing as much as a stripper thing.. but.. the girls in Miami (not just the strippers) can all do that Butt-popping, rapid-fire-butt-jiggle dance that has got to be the greatest invention in the history of the world. That's all i'm gonna say about that. I've actually attempted to move my butt like that and it's freakin'difficult. Skillz.
When's the Teahupoo contest??
Tom is probably sitting at the peak at Balangan right about now. Scoring 4-6 foot reeling, glassy early-season Bali succulence.
Ian, when do you leave?
Who's going on Spring/Summer surf trips?

Posted by: e at April 12, 2005 09:57 AMe - I agreed with the general point you made about strip clubs yesterday (sleezy vibe / heavy hustle), but good for you for expressing regret at possibly offending/insulting, strippers and those who frequent strip clubs. It shows your heart's in the right place - that you care about people's feelings. Personally, I really appreciate the wide range of subjects that get coverage on this here board. It would be boring if ALL we talked about was surfing. Keep the social comment coming.
Posted by: Jimmie at April 12, 2005 09:57 AMI haven't been in the water for 2 weeks. Hell, I haven't even seen the ocean for 3 days . . . I'm beginning to feel withdrawal symptoms. Another week of acupuncture and chiro and I'll be good to go. I turn 52 today - if I knew I was gonna live this long I would have taken better care of myself!
i am headed to mainland mexico for a short one - may 12-16. by the way, anyone looking to sell any travel bags?
Posted by: loon at April 12, 2005 10:01 AMLoon, where you headed in Mainland? I was throwing around some ideas there. Never been. Wife friendly? Child friendly?
Posted by: Kaiser at April 12, 2005 10:15 AMGood point Jimmie.
Yesterday I learned the following:
- the Long Emergency will be a major bummer;
Posted by: traut at April 12, 2005 10:20 AM- next time I bang J Lo I should do her missionary style as she might otherwise shit on me;
- it is possible to lodge pork in the sinus socket behind your eyeball;
- my tounge fungus probably came from licking the walls at the Lusty Lady; and
- worse yet, i missed a surf window on Sunday - ARRRRR!!!

I've got a couple travel bags for sale, one is a triple or four board bag 8''6" and the other is a 10' double longboard bag....
Posted by: Mexi at April 12, 2005 10:37 AMBigger than you might think out there this morning. Definitely overhead sets with some thump. Nasty, relentless sandbar midway out.
Super smooth but there was a little texture on the outside as I was leaving. A little sectiony which I like 'cause it makes it more interesting. Solo for a while and one other familiar face showed up near the end of the session.
Heading south in a couple of weeks for a few days so I'm sure you heads up here will have epic conditions.
Keep surfing no matter what (you too Jimmie)

travelling with boards is so farking expensive. thinking about leaving the boards at home and renting. anyone rent boards from Costa Azul - Olea? if so how'd the board(s) go?

got the new journal yesterday and spent a LONG time
last night looking at it.....kept seeing these shots of
glassy GLASSY GLASSY-ASS waves. best quote on here
in a while was from kaiser yesterday...and it kept playing
through my head as i saw glassy wave after glassy wave.
"what a waste of an ocean."
what does a glassy wave look like in person?
Posted by: korewin at April 12, 2005 10:59 AMi am starting to forget....and to surf one? holy shit!
what a concept.
thanks for posting the pics, e.
the alameda park is pretty fun. it sits right on the bay so you get a nice view of sf while you're skating. you might also want to check out the berkeley park while you're over there. it's a bit bigger and easier to carve around. although last time i went there it was closed due to some toxic waste in the pools!! team toxic!!
Posted by: rza at April 12, 2005 10:59 AMkdalle, might have had a sighting...I was heading out on the clownboard as you came in?
SKUNKED! Skunked!!!! arrrhgargharghargharghargh!!! Farking damn! It's been a while! .02 secs away from zipping outside, near dry hair paddle, but didn't squeek by the corner of that one, farking one, last, outside wave. Got sent straight into the hubris zone. Duckdives were working and everything. Even the bigger waves on the head weren't bad at all...but I simply wasn't moving anywhere! AGGHAGHGAGH!
Sorry, rant off. A tad aggravated. Got out last 2 times, same place, no problem! But *those* times didn't catch anything. Grrrrr! Grr!
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at April 12, 2005 11:26 AMSummer Trips - I decided to make my summer one big trip. The city wasn't sounding like the best summer option to me so I got a part time job in Honolulu for june and july. So it'll be south shore Oahu for 2 months and then Kauai for the first 3 weeks of August. I can't wait for trunks, sun, and south swells. Now I just got to figure out where I am going to live and if i should buy a car while i am out there to cruise around. Any suggestions?
Posted by: OB Rat at April 12, 2005 11:33 AM3to5, I stopped by Costa Azul 3 weeks ago. It's across the highway from Zippers (I'm not sure if that's a new location). My girlfriend was thinking of renting a board, but ended up taking a pass. The selection looked pretty good with more variety than I would expect. Are you hanging out in Cabo, or heading to the north or east? Definitely "secrets" aplenty once you get just a little bit out of town.
Posted by: Adam at April 12, 2005 11:35 AM3to5-
I've rented boards from Costa Azul, and I believe they were fairly priced.
I remember noticing that it was one of the first places that I had seen which offered decent shortboards for rent as well as logs.
Posted by: be at April 12, 2005 11:39 AME and kdalle have it right. More juice and more fun than it might've looked like. A tougher paddle than I'd expected too (mid-beach 9-ish; there but for the grace of that last wave missing me go I, sharkbait!). Not totally mushed out, occasional speedy walls, pockets, reasonably clean at first . . . but it got pretty bumpy for my little board by 11---slap-slap-slap-slap....I saw some white-capping from the sea wall as I left. For me, some kookery, some "eh", but a couple of rides to keep me smiling for a while. Two guys just north of me at first, then another joining me at the end, but that was all; lots of waves unridden.
Posted by: kloo at April 12, 2005 11:40 AMhey kaiser - i'm flying into guadalajara because a friend is there for work-school right now and has a vehicle. then we drive (@4hrs) to the michoacan coast to whatever spots suit our fancy, and either camp or stay in cheap hotels. i've only travelled that stretch of coast once before, back in 2002, so i can't say much, but there are some nice spots. but it gets pretty hot after may, and the rains can prevent access to some spots with dirt roads. does seems more family-friendly further south, especially down by zihuat.
thx for that link, mig, looks like a sweet spot.

squid row definitely goes off huge! Cabo is kinda lame imho. psyched to bust out of there after the wedding.
Posted by: e at April 12, 2005 02:00 PMIf you want to see someone doing a lousy job, go see Blake.
No not Blakestah, the intersection of Blake and Geary, near Masonic. Every day on the way home from work I drive by a woman standing in the middle of Geary wearing a Statue of Liberty outfit waving and smiling (like she just won an award) to passer-bys advertising some company at that intersection. Wind, dirt, fumes, brake pad dust, forced smile, probably no benefits, low pay... Makes a desk job look not so bad. I wonder if she can dance?
Posted by: Dennis at April 12, 2005 02:04 PMDriving to Mainland Mex has changed this is what is required for mainland. I wonder if its applicable to Baja. Baja is to Mexico as Hong Kong is to China. One country two systems.....just checking if anyone has done the drive recently and if the new rules were in effect in TJ.
Bring the original plus two(2) copies of the following documents:
Valid proof of citizenship (passport or birth certificate).
The appropiate immigration form (tourist card). learn about visa options
The valid vehicle registration certificate, or a document, such as the original title that certifies the legal ownership of the vehicle. It must be in the driver's name.
The leasing contract (if the vehicle is leased or rented) which must be in the name of the person importing the car. If the vehicle belongs to a company, present the document that certifies the employee works for the company.
A valid driver's license, issued outside Mexico.
An international credit card, also issued outside Mexico (American Express, Mastercard or Visa), in the name of the driver of the vehicle.

Posted by: pez at April 12, 2005 02:07 PMe- the alameda park suffers greatly in the wind and I am sure that the soil on the naval base is very clean and safe to breath. the berk. park will likely be closed due to leaching toxic ground water (it was built next to a superfund site) thanks to recent rains. my advise to you is to go skate the pleasant hill park. plenty of good runs for a beginning vert/ bank rider and a really fun deepish bowl.
