Sick friday and saturday.
Friend had bachelor party saturday night.
We went to a "gentlemen's" club and i ended up bugging out.
Sick and sober, my perspective was maybe a bit too analytical and realistic.
This place was supposed to be "higher class" but the scene was depraved.
These girls work all night, parading around the joint in next to nothing.
Constantly oggled and groped by drunk, lecherous men they are forced to smile, coo, flirt and show interest. I kept thinking that each of the girls was somebody's daughter, or the mother of some three-year-old kid. I also kept imagining the circumstances that led each women to end up stripping and grinding and false-smiling and slutting themselves out like skanky vampires all night long. Maybe they were addicted to coke, supplied to them by the owner of the club? Now enslaved by the debt they owed to him? Maybe they came from some fucked-up, abusive childhood and found some kind of tweaked satistaction by stripping and sleazing with any and all men who walked in the door and had $20 in their pocket? Maybe they were just college-girls with nice bodies who wanted an extra $1000 a night? I think if i would have been drunk and horny i would have maybe got caught up in it.. but being sick and sober and a bit tired i saw the frailty and sadness in some of the girl's faces and it made me feel miserable. I had to get out of there. Then the strippers would approach and brush up on you and waft their perfume smell and ask if you wanted a lap dance. At that point i cringed and shirked back. Eventually i was crouched in the corner of this room, basically the only place to evade the hassle. My friends seemed to be having a good time and i think i was bringing them down by obsessing over the negative vibrations i felt. I went outside to escape for a few minutes and ended up not being allowed back in. Sitting outside the club i had a better time quietly observing all the happenings on this little seedy corner of town. To my surprise there were a ton of groups entering the club with their girlfriends in tow!
It was a weird night. Made me REALLY appreciate having a beautiful, solid, happy, smart low-key girlfriend! CJ ROXX!

Here here E... we love our ladies, especially when we snuggle in the morning. Small south swell hit town (Oahu) this weekend and every single person with a surfboard went out. Not the mother's day swell, but at least a little pulse in the water. The weather has also finaly turned to a bit of blue sky. Strange winter we are still having. Aloha to all the niceness crew

They are Vegas Strippers - and they are in every town you have ever visited. And every one of them want YOUR MONEY....
They make more money then I do shakin their ass!
God bless the good ole' U.S. of A.!
E, the only question I have is "Did you see a wave?" What a waste of ocean.

the best surfer out at really small 38th ave, pp yesterday pm was a youngish woman, chin length sandy blond hair with a really weird bic-ish longboard, the thing was ugly and she rode it so well. pulled a perfect hang ten into a 360 with apparrent ease. crosstepping like fred astaire on meth. got into every wave with two strokes and made everyone else out there look like kooks. probably the best female longboarder i have seen in person. anyone know who she is?
that long emergency article paints a bleak picture.
Posted by: j at April 11, 2005 10:43 AMAs a former bartender and bar manager, it always amazes me how focused strip clubs are on getting your money out of your wallet. Those folks stay up late thinking of how to do it. They are very efficient.
I find strip clubs to be very depressing.
Energy issues will be huge! Good article. What really amazes me is how dependent we are on petroleum for stuff other than the obvious. I never understood how dependent on petroleum the agricultural community is- for fertilizer and weed control.
Posted by: gttim at April 11, 2005 10:44 AMHey e, when you're feeling blue you should join the party near my street. Went out in my finest yellow shirt w/big squiggly black stripe and rose colored glasses. 25 minutes. 3 foot closeouts "outside" and swirly rippy holes on the far inside. Walked in and out of water 3 times for mocking Peak Quest. It was the ultimate challenge. One stand up, 2 "turns", one unceremonious dumping onto my arse on the sand. Shockingly, miles of empty beach. Good times.
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at April 11, 2005 10:47 AMThat rolling stone article reminds me of popular press in the late 1970s....when we had to wait in line to get gas on odd/even days depending on your license plate. Posted by: Mexi at April 11, 2005 11:20 AMSo how much does the price of gas have to rise till you pass on driving solo to go surfing in favor of carpooling or biking or walking...
I think most people will grin and bear it even when the price doubles from what it is today (look at Europe, for example).
There is ample room to improve in automobile efficiency. As gas prices climb the market will favor more fuel efficient models (sacrificing some muscle) so that people will drive just as much. Carpooling and public transit will become more appealing as well. So for transportation of people I would argue there is no impending doomsday scenario.
However, electricty generation and other industrial uses of petroleum are likely at max efficiency and these will definitely be more affected by price of oil.
Rising gas prices are just another reason to be glad surfing is not a motor sport (except for the trip to the water)
Posted by: Sander at April 11, 2005 11:21 AMeast bay surfer passed on consuming fuel to drive to the coast for sunset session yesterday. son initially stated he was tired after pitching a base ball game on a warm sunny day, then later commented he wanted to surf but wished the waves were closer. despite selfish thoughts of abandoning the family for four hours to get two hours of solo surf fun, i opted to stay home and build the familial relationship....perhaps the end result as more are held back by rising oil prices and family ties is fewer people in the line up, i.e. more locals joined by the occasional out of towner that buys the fuel and makes the drive but behaves even more kookishly when surfing due to greater session infrequenscy
Posted by: snake at April 11, 2005 11:40 AMKaiser - no waves through that stretch. Beautiful beach and aqua-marine water though. no wetsuit necessary.
not sure about the reef girls. I don't think taking photos of beautiful women is the same as women slutting and grinding and giving lapdances to leering men. I guess the reef-contests are a little weird. Why do those girls DO that??? I guess they like the attention?

Posted by: Kit at April 11, 2005 12:06 PMKit is that you?
Biofuel is somewhat hard to find , we know where to get it basically everywhere in California from Humbolt to San Diego, but sometimes its out of the way. But, the TDI Jetta will also run on regular desiel and there was no modifications to the car. Any desiel car or truck can run on Biodesiel.
Posted by: Mexi at April 11, 2005 12:13 PM2.40 - 2.70 a gal, it is becoming more economical lately.
Posted by: Mexi at April 11, 2005 12:14 PMJason Kidd's wife used to be a local Budweiser girl. 49er Cheerleaders get paid about $100 per game.
These women like money/fame/wealth/notoriaty. Reef girls the same. They are "models" that just fit the Reef demo.
Ask yourself this: If someone paid you to wear their clothes and walk around, would you? At what point would you draw the line in terms or how much clothing you went without?
Posted by: Kaiser at April 11, 2005 12:21 PMThere was a surfable window yesterday early afternoon at Ramad Nil before it got way too churny and whitecapped. Nothing wonderful or big, but fun ridables were on offer, that with luck would reform and connect through the mogul field. This place often seems to benefit from a disorganized swell--reduces the closing out.
Which reminds me... I'm puzzled about why there are so many closeouts at long beach breaks generally. Swell angles of would make me think the waves should be hitting shore, well, at an angle, when in fact there is surprisingly little of that, and it's almost never very dramatic. So I take it the waves shift direction as the bottom gets shallow? Is it just that the shallowness slows the wave down, so the earlier-arriving part waits up for the later-arriving part down-beach?

Posted by: Ian at April 11, 2005 12:54 PMi haven't had a chance to read the article on fuel prices yet, but Sander's comments reminded me of a personal pet peeve -- the average consumers' take on what's important in an automobile:
while auto safety features have improved (a good thing) and stlying has become more aerodynamic (a good thing...at least as far as efficiency goes) fuel efficiency hasn't really changed.
my little '93 commuter (yes, unfortunately, i have to commute to work) STILL gets better mileage than most (even small) cars that are being put out by the auto companies. the reason?...the average consumer values "power" and "performance" over all other auto characteristics. so, while fuel efficiency hasn't improved, the horsepower output of the typical (even "economy") car has gone up 50 to 100%...or even more. the premium placed on power baffles me when my '93 still gets me going plenty fast enough to "compete" effectively in the fast lane and to (unfortunately) get CHP attention.
until consumers (and marketers) get off of their "power" trip, there is little incentive for auto companies to put technology into engine efficiency. perhaps the rising oil prices will help provide incentive and that, as far as i'm concerned, is a good thing.
...hopefully it happens before the billion+ people in India and China who are currently on bicycles start driving SUVs.
stepping off soap-box now. thanks for indulging me.

Sunday morning got up well pre-dawn. Loaded up my Jeep after a couple cups of coffee. Opened the garage door. Hopped into the Jeep. Turned the key. Nothing! Whatthef**k. I pushed the Jeep out of the garage and called AAA. Waited 40 minutes for the truck. I missed an opportunity for a low tide break after driving for about 45 minutes to recharge the battery so drove to FunkyFilthyDirtyMar. Going into that pit is a result of desperation. On the stripper discussion, IMHO a lot of strippers would seriously take offense to this sentence "I also kept imagining the circumstances that led each women to end up stripping and grinding and false-smiling and slutting themselves out like skanky vampires all night long. "
I have known a few strippers over the years and some of these ladies were pretty hardcore feminists. Their take was that in some ways it is empowering seeing how men will drop insane amounts of $$$ for a little tease. Kind of the who's pimping who perspective if you will.
What is more degrading stripping & making a $1,000 in a night or working at Mcdonalds for next to nothing?

Posted by: Mexi at April 11, 2005 02:52 PMWhen you work in TV Field Production (as I do) you encounter many interesting crew guys with many interesting stories. This year at the Sundance Film Festival, we had just wrapped an interview with David Schwimmer where he told a funny story about Sly Stallone leaving his wireless mic on while being 'attended to' in a bathroom on set, and the evil sound mixer who turned up his volume for all to hear.
Posted by: Bennifer at April 11, 2005 03:00 PMOnce Schwimmer was gone our gentle Utah Local Audio guy, turned to us sheepishly and said, "Man, Schwimmer's story is nothing, I've heard way worse in my headphones on set."
The room went Silent. Our Sound Guy is one of those soft sincere dads who works in TV in a small town and is more impressed with his daughter's report card than a Hollywood star, so we were SHOCKED to hear what came out of his mouth next...
"Remember a few years ago when Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were here shooting Project Greenlight?" (They had gone to Sundance to interview directors and writers and try and create a publicity stunt and an episode out of it.) "I was doing sound in the condo where they were both lodging and filming. At one point Ben took a break from shooting and disappeared upstairs to his bedroom. By mistake he left his wireless mic on."
"Jennifer Lopez was there with Ben, but was hiding out in his room the whole time. At first when I heard Ben kissing her hello, I immediately went to turn the volume down on my headphones. But then they started kissing loudly and making noises, and I felt so guilty, but I left the sound up, and heard Jennifer saying 'I love you baby, I love you... You wanna get busy, baby. You wanna get busy?'"
"Then I heard Ben reply, .'Are you sure you're feelin' better? I don't want you to shit on me again.'"
Silence. Then screams from everyone on our crew. Our dear sound guy seemed like he had finally told a story he'd been holding onto for years, and was relieved to tell people who found it more funny than disgusting. I think it is perfectly both."

Posted by: Mexi at April 11, 2005 03:27 PMe - It's sick and weird that pandering to men's prurience is far more lucrative than many of the career choices available to women. Strip clubs are creepy and depressing. BACKSTAGE is worse - don't ask, just chalk it up to an extravagantly misspent youth and trust me on this. Good-hearted club owners and well adjusted sex-workers are by far the exception / not the rule. Why entertainment that involves sexuality is usually such a sordid affair in our society is a a very complicated sociological phenomenon. It involves old-time Puritan repression, guilt and fear of sexuality; sexism and the marginal roles women are often forced into; and a whole bunch of other stuff like child abuse, addiction and poverty. Sex is better when everyone involved is into it for the fun of it!

Posted by: Mexi at April 11, 2005 04:44 PME-have been a fan of your site for a while now. Brings joy and a quirky perspective to everyday office life. This strip club tirade of yours is out of character, either to be construed as a moralizing (not your style) or self-serving in some way (did your girlfriend read this?...she share your views?). If I were one of your bachelor party friends I'd be insulted. If I were a stripper I'd be insulted. I have talked openly with several strippers who were well-adjusted and happy with the modest trade-offs their craft demands in exchange for the ridiculous sums of cash they make (tax-free much of the time). I've even met some strippers who are genuinely into it. In general you rule and your site rules. Please stick to the surfing and interesting anecdotes and leave the moralizing to evangelists... who, ironically, are genuinely pimping themselves out for money.
