clean surface, offshores, swell, but not quite coming together

went surfboarding this morning.
rode a few thumpers.
received some severe beat-downs.
heard it was rad yesterday afternoon.
mostly just paddled and paddled and duck-dove and duck-dove.
cool to surf with Elias and Kaiser Sose.
Kaiser was like the old man and the sea, waiting way way outside for the humunga kawabunga from down undah.

read Persepolis 2 last night and this morning. It's a Graphic novel about a teenager who leaves her intellectual family in war-torn Iran and goes to Austria. She struggles and copes with the european cultural looseness (sexuality, drugs, etc.). The story talks of nihilism, neo-nazis, the Iran-Iraq war, love, philosophy, terror, psychedelics, mathematics, being alone in the world, destitution, faith. I've been laughing and crying as i read. definetely worth checking out. Fabulous illustrations too.

I also recently read George Lakoff's "Don't think of an elephant." It's a short political book. Lakoff is a professor of cognitive science and linquistics at Berkeley and has been very influencial in helping the left modernize its messenging. He talks about "framing" and discusses the core differences in values between conservatives and progressives. He suggests that conservatives see the world from a "strict father morality" point of view while progressives see the world from a "nurturant parent" outlook. He then describes how these core differences play out in the policies and attitudes of each side. An enlightening read, but also scary and wrenching to think about.

Does anyone have suggestions for a place for my girl and i to stay in Santa Cruz this saturday night? We want to hang with J.O.C. for his birthday and also see the Monarch Butterflies at Natty Bridges. We'd like to stay in a low-key, not-too-expensive, comfy spot. Any thoughts?

fun surfing with you fellahs.
it seemed to get lots better after we got out?
bummer.

reading "ghost war" right now..... a thicky on the CIA, and Afganistan from the Soviet Invasion through 9/11. Its a eye opener!

peace out!

I saw a bunch of folks in the water this am but not much action. Good waves coming through but you really needed to be in the right spot, which seemed impossible to predict. Last night served up some pretty waves. The waves were breaking way outside due to the super-low tide which meant a long paddle out. I caught a fast steep right within a few minutes of reaching the linup. Took a high line on the wave and a fast steep drop to the bottom. Couple pumps, a cutback and a kickout. Next thing I faced was a 200 wave set... Phew! Only had enough strength for one more wave by the time I made it out again. An OK left. A guy next to me made a hero drop on a big left peak. I was paddling for the same wave a just few yards away until I saw he was going for it. He took off under the lip and made it. Pretty impressive.

E,
Try the Davenport Inn. I stayed there last weekend with my girl. She paid, so not sure the cost. Rooms have a view (with road noise). Road noise isn't bad, but exists. Rooms are small and simple. Of course, you are right in the thick of it for surf. The only problem is if your going to party in SC at night, you have a 10mile drive north to get home.
I recomend it for a low key spot in the middle of paradis.
Surfingsam.

Posted by: surfingsam at February 9, 2005 11:01 AM

sweet st. aug pic! that beach, A street, provided me with some of the worst waves i've ever surfed...but it's also where i caught my very first waves. yeah st. aug!!!

Posted by: rza at February 9, 2005 11:04 AM

davenport inn ain't cheap. i'm all about the cheap hotels in the flats. you can talk em down on the rates. or this guy rents a sweet little studio i've stayed at on the west side, but i think you have to rent it by the week. http://www.playarental.com./santacruz.htm
ahhh, for the days when my friends were still in school down there and i always had a free place to stay.
ahhh, for the days when i was still in school down there. missing the points and reefs today.
why do i ever surf pacifica? the place always disappoints me.

e: how about renting a tentcabin at big basin? haven't done it myself cuz they aren't dog-friendly. cheaper for sure. though maybe a bit far from the coast/central scruz...

Posted by: loon at February 9, 2005 11:29 AM

thanks for the input surfingsam, steamwand and loon. I'd ideally like to spend a little less than $130. hmmm...

Here is a link for the room I stayed at. It says $135/night. Pretty close to your budget.

Like i said, nothing fancy! Nice though to be able to walk to coffee, breakfast the beach etc.
Short drive to surf and dayhikes. Depends on how you want to spend your time.

Your definately more isolated up there. If most of your time would be spent in SC, I would find somewhere there.

The Lakoof book looks good, I just ordered it. Thanks E...

Posted by: mexi at February 9, 2005 11:49 AM

Wow, look at the size difference in Trey's head from early to later years. It's massive!

Posted by: Dennis at February 9, 2005 12:10 PM

i stayed in a low-end chain hotel near the boardwalk like 5 years ago that was like $50 a night... can't remember the name right now though. the neighborhood wasn't the best but it was cheap and had a fat jacuzzi bath tub... good times for you and the lady.

kicking myself for not getting in the water the last couple days, tomorrow it's on.

Posted by: bbr at February 9, 2005 12:11 PM

E--Try one of those old school, flea-bite-lookin' motels on the east side. They look cozy. Can't remember names, but I'm sure an online search would do. I think some are listed through AAA. Butano state park is dog friendly. Nearby Pescadero means pie at Duarte's and $6 Patron. Also, isn't there inexpensive camping right on the beach (a nudist beach by day?)--it's marked with the red, white, and blue sign just north of SC?

Posted by: cantsurftoday at February 9, 2005 12:21 PM

those trey pics are awesome!

i just booked for my mom at this chill b&b on west cliff for $75 a night! www.darlinghouse.com looks pretty sick. it might be $95 for 1 night, but still dope!

e - you might want to take a look at the Rio Sands. My family used to stay there every year. Not the nicest place, but it got the job done. They also have a nice pool and jacuzzi. The little breakfast they have is really chill too. Walking distance from couple resturants, coffee shops, markets. ahhhh, memories of my sis and i taking our razor scooters up and down that beach all day..

good luck.

weird coincidence...the guy i casual-carpooled in to work with today was telling me a bit about lakoff. interesting stuff.

Posted by: paul b at February 9, 2005 12:43 PM

Wow!
I vote for the DarlingHouse. Didn't know that was a B&B. Location blows doors on the DavenportInn. Seems to me once you got there, you could park your car all weekend and walk/ride your bike anywhere your wanted to go.

Thanks for the input J.O.C.

Posted by: surfingsam at February 9, 2005 01:16 PM

just called darlinghouse.. lowest price they have available is $150 a night and they really want you to do the whole weekend.

Posted by: e at February 9, 2005 01:18 PM

Old man in the sea! Solid! I always wanted to be "that" guy that was sitting so far out in the lineup that you never paid attention to them until the big macker came in! I had all the right elements this morning sans the big macker. I never nabbed it.

Fun getting out. But, I have to say that I have been pretty disappointed with the DP's lately. too much freakin water....

This is pretty sweet! Those guys get it done....

Posted by: Kaiser at February 9, 2005 01:23 PM

a former co-worker made a reservation at the darling house last year for v-day and was told one price, but when the bill came it was substantially more. watchout!

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at February 9, 2005 01:23 PM

South beach looked very hard to surf 9am; lotsa fizzlers; didn't see any real rides. So I tried a crowded high-tide spot south and got a few fun, speedy shoulder-high lefts, and on one of them I wasn't even dropped in on by longboarders!

Posted by: kloo at February 9, 2005 01:25 PM

Looks like another excellent after work session for y'all. Not me though. I have a class tonight. grrr.

Posted by: Dennis at February 9, 2005 01:38 PM

Rio Sands is good. Had a Wedding in Aptos last fall. My wife, child and I stayed in one room and our good friends stayed next door. Not cheap, but not outragious and close to the beach. Also good breakfast places nearby. Mellow.

Posted by: friend #1 at February 9, 2005 02:01 PM

i ride a quad much like that one. but its future fins. canard quad. i enjoy it. high lines. doesn't bottom turn so well and sometimes skirts out from under me on steepies but that's partly my skill level at work.

damn! another st. aug dawg....yeah, pom, most of the pics posted on that site are from tory's house near the beach. tory has done a great job supporting surfing there.

blow hole can fire, vilano used to fire, and the poles in jax always fired on the big nor'easters...where we'd brave 50 degree winter waters!! in florida!!

Posted by: rza at February 9, 2005 05:24 PM

i second that rec. about the little place by the boardwalk. i, too, forget its name but it should be easy to find. it is right next to the boardwalk, right above the skatepark there. was pretty cheap w/breakfast. Don't know much about SC but it seemed very central. Good luck.

Posted by: Hb at February 9, 2005 05:24 PM

e, check out this link (http://www2.cruzio.com/~rls/surfnSCLodge.html) I haven't stayed at any of these places, so I don't have a good reference for you.

As for the quad thang, I love mine. I've had good times on it surfing three foot mushburgers and overhead near barrelling walls (much more difficult entry). Never really did a bottom turn on either of those kind of waves.

dude you should stay on the eastside and surf the hook. Three mile and even davenport sometimes has too many breakins and they love san franciscan treats, so if you insist on surfing country keep the mp3 the laptops (if you have one) the amp the guitar the surf tshirts, sweatshirts, the seven pairs of shoes in your east side hotel room. Course the heroin addicts might take it then. i know just stay home Drive in, drive out, its safer

Posted by: at February 9, 2005 07:10 PM

tweener day. Not big enough to be the big thrill just glad to be there, but too large to sit way inside and charging charger charge and grovel the sets. Current's been tough lately too, a good workout but it would be fun if the rights opened up so you didn't feel you lost a block on every takeoff. Finally found the right spot for an outside non-mushburger. Some of those outside peaks start out so lazy, then elevator drop you. You hit the bottom coping with heavy vectors, trying to stay centered and driving. I can only imagine a reel like Pipe - every takeoff must feel late. No bites on this boogie board I recovered in the parking lot last Tuesday. Guy using it drove a dark red pickup with a covered bed and was out in the lineup with me on large waves. Somebody must know him. Oh well, c'est la.

One third of Bushs' recent budget cuts were in education, although he actually increased the budget by eight percent. The shit is going to hit the fan. Arnie's recent cuts hurt us too..
