« weak sauce | Main | clean surface, offshores, swell, but not quite coming together »

looks promising.. but..

Frumpy and disheveled.
Outer-water onshores?
A few voluminous, heaving beasties.
Difficult to line up.
Punishing and relentless.
Get a short ride and pay dearly with 300 anvils to the head.
Then get back outside after 8 million duckdives and the ocean goes flat.
Kinda frustrating.
Doesn't look gnarly from the beach.
But...

Some anger out there.
This one particular sandbar hucked out gruesome destructo slabs.
In the early morning lack of light the fearsome waves looked like scaly, open-mouthed deep-sea creatures. Fanged mouths wide open looking to swallow unsuspecting surfers. I even noticed a jet-black eyeball on the side of one disgruntled suck-out. I looked deep inside the eye and saw flames and hellfire spurting and vomiting. Deeper still i saw a tranquil scene of wafting palm fronds and a gently peeling warm-water reefbreak... then some smiling hula dancers and chilled-out reggae tunes.. sunshine... warmth... verdant green mountainscape... But then of course reality exploded in my face as that same wave rose up and devoured me whole. Cold.. unforgiving. brutal. painful. gut-wrenching. Angular. Pounding. Solitary. Merciless. Grinding. Thumping. OB.

Lindy didn't serve up much either, it had 15 mins of fame this a.m. Looked pretty good. Better then certain spots at the beach. Fools Gold - like usual. Nice to get some waves though.

All bow to the Master I am. Thank You. And to Bill Osgood of Santa Cruz/ Oahu; a fine artist, jungle man and insane body surfer!
Have you seen his artwork? 'Oh' - sorry' - He was a featured artist in my show at The Arts at Marks in Honolulu 2003, " Blue vs. Blue." Anybody catch it?
E: Can you send on over some of the hallucinogenics you're grinding into a pulpy drinkable green mud for your morning surf report? I could add some of it to my cranberry juice, sit here without moving and have the surf session of my life - right here in front of this fucking innernet machine.
Seriuolsly guy, you're somehting else. Do you lie awake at night thinking this shit up or what?
And where is that art pansy panty boy CADAVER?
Cadaver, you crumb - I thought the anti-bvibe diatribe was pretty funny but you sure miss the point. That is not my logo - mine be different. No eurotrash crap please.
Waves are inverted, plus there is a whale or some massive beast parousing the Pacheco fishing hole. Sand bars are a mess. Dardem clouds on the far horizon making the onshores even stronger, plus the swell is MASSIVE.
And then I woke up...

Having trouble getting to the beach after CR. Riding with my friend from east bay for 30 minutes to suit up in darkness to get an ice cream headache amid swirling currents... Hunting shifting peaks catching a few rides and then heading in less than 2 hours later (his lame corporate job's fault)... Dumping the bucket of water on my head, pulling off wettie, packing board in... Fighting rush hour traffic 45 minutes to downtown, carrying board to work, stash in storeroom... Blurry red eyes from saltwater, complete lack of desire to do any work, daydreams... Carry board home on bus, hose off gear, hang it on back fence...

But those few rides and daydreams keep me coming back. It's just so tough to face again after staying a 10 minute hike from the beach and surfing any time of the day in warm and well-shaped waves. Once the memory wears off more, I'll be back! Darn.

E--'Good things come to those who wait.' If you want a Deluxe Reverb, then it'll come. I came across one in the middle of Ohio (Wooster) a few years back. It was mint and only $450, so they're around. The best days were pre-eBay though. But if you seek, you shall find. Same applies to waves...and amour. Sometimes we tend to shortcut what we really want and end up with something less...occasionally something better. Keep your Concert and run the signal of the Deluxe (when you find it) through it for maximum volume. And when the sound guy tells you to turn down, turn it up.

I purchased a used Walden 8'8" last weekend and my stoke was stoked. I'd been seeking just the right one for a while. Thanks OB.

Posted by: sea scum at February 8, 2005 11:36 AM

thanks amigoism. I've been feeling the amp-blues lately. I bought a used 60watt 1 12" Concert Reverb for $750 before tax, $815 after tax. Guy at shop (Panhandle guitars) told me it was a 80's-era Rivera Concert Reverb. I later found out it's actually 2001 Rivera-reissue that was discontinued - lame!!! But.. still.. i just loved how it sounded. 2 months after purchase i started noticing a weird, ticking/ringing/hissing sound whenever i played A or A# on the first or second strings. Was i just stoned? was it really there? It would come and go. Whenever i was in a thick jam or trying to record the sound would come out in full gusto!! grrr!!! I took it into panhandle guitars and couldn't reproduce the shitty sound!! arggh!! The guy told me he couldn't do anything about it anyway because i bought it used. But.. the next day the sound came back loud and clear and i was bummed. Started playing Base more because the hissing sound of the amp depressed me. ALmost all the money i had saved into that purchase and now it's shitty!! grr!! Soo.. i shopped around for a Fender amp tech. They all seem to be booked into the next millenia. But found this old crusty guy on Geary who's supposed to be good and reliable. He said the sound was from faulty caps. I said great, go ahead and fix it. That was 4 weeks ago. He called 3 weeks ago to say that my power tubes were about to go and that some attenuator or some shit in my amp was also fucked. I said, how much?. He told me and i said, yeah, go fix it. So.. now i'm waiting and waiting for this non-vintage fender tube amp to get to playable range. I'll have spent over $1000 all-told. I could have easily afforded a vintage Deluxe or Pro for that money. I'm just bummed about it.

hopefully in the next 5 years i'll be able to get a nice deluxe.

sorry for the rant..

thanks Marco for letting me borrow your Hot Rod Deluxe last night. Hans Blix and the Inspectors back in the house and that amp went goood!!

Posted by: bbr at February 8, 2005 11:45 AM

Dennis, don't get me wrong -- I love OB. It just takes a certain level of desperation when you don't have your own car. I've thought about moving to SF from Oakland a lot (I used to live in SF before I got married). The cost is just so much higher and my wife worked in east bay. But now she's in school in SF and we can at least carpool together now. I think my plan will be to take the car out for DP and have her ride the bus to school around 8, then pass her back the car with my board in it. That could work!

Posted by: Nate at February 8, 2005 11:45 AM

no way sea scum. Kaiser and i surfed with that guy the other day. He was pretty chill. He had the "kelly's cove local boys" sticker on his truck but he was friendly to us.

Posted by: e at February 8, 2005 11:47 AM

Yeah, funny to see that tattoo. I think it is pretty cool actually. No tats on me but I heard that once you get one, you can't stop. That guy was pretty cool to rap with. Mellow dude. Good vibes.

considering operation swept to Daly City....check the tides

Posted by: blakestah at February 8, 2005 12:30 PM

It's getting better, bagel, or was an hour ago when I left it, but not much. Still weird, swirly currents (probably starting to get fast southward now?), waves not making up their minds, lots of close-outs. But kind of glassy and some tantalizing juice, so something good could happen. I totally sucked, to boot. Something like fifteen kooked take-offs to three un-kooked.

Posted by: kloo at February 8, 2005 12:33 PM

This looks like an after work session if the winds hold up. The outside bars should be breaking with a negative tide and the currents will most likely slow down a bit. Yeah. Right now looks like an express to Lindy. You can paddle there faster than driving right now.

Posted by: Dennis at February 8, 2005 12:46 PM

E--That sux about the wasted cash. Try Berkeley. There are some good guitar/amp shops over there. Also, try checkin' some music shops up and down the coast when you're travellin'. May find just the right one. Next time you try out an amp. Crank it up for a long time. Let it warm and then wreak havoc. Ask if they've got a back room to give it a go. If they don't, then they'll hafta suffer until you're finished. There's a shop in downtown South San Francisco, but not sure how helpful they are. Use the concert for running vocals(?)

Posted by: amigoism at February 8, 2005 12:52 PM

hey amigoism.. hopefully the concert will be fixed when i get it back and i'll just use it and be happy. hopefully.

I used to like Blue Note Music on Telegraph in Berkeley. They have great Jazz guitars and amps and stuff.. but.. the owner is kind-of a snob.. He wouldn't let me try any of the amps loud!! he even yelled at me for trying to turn up the $900 Deluxe that i was trying out.. I was thinking of buying it too!!! Never will i support that store again.

someday it'll come together!!

kloo - sounds like you had a lot of chances today. Lerm and i struggled just to find a handful of approachable waves.

Anyone have experience with Haight Street Music for doing work on amps?

Posted by: Dennis at February 8, 2005 01:57 PM

checked it looked pretty fun actually at inside zoo's i waved it though for some reason, kinda lagged..pretty glassy still maybe getting better, outer bars trying to break, clean. thanks kloo

Posted by: bagel at February 8, 2005 01:57 PM

Posted by: at February 8, 2005 01:59 PM

dennis. i'd generally avoid haight street music for everything except picks, strings, and guitar-gawking. Their prices are outrageous.

Hal at Guitronics (9th and mission) and the guy above Real guitars (near mission and van ness) are good places to start for amp repair. My guy, Wayne on 5th and Geary was supposed to be good.. but.. he's had my amp forever!!

Posted by: e at February 8, 2005 02:05 PM

mmm....5 day old pizza

Posted by: j at February 8, 2005 02:15 PM

Thanks E. I've heard 2nd and 3rd party negative stories about Haight Street regarding repairs. It's difficult to trust anyone in that business. Some friends of mine are audiophiles and they have taken to doing thier own repairs on high end equipment cuz of the scam factor. Can't we all just play along?

Posted by: Dennis at February 8, 2005 02:18 PM

ya dennis.. i think i might be getting scammed as we speak. grrr.. kinda like the auto mechanic with the oblivious lady. In this case i'm the oblivious guitar player. audiophile skills would be awesome!!!

Posted by: dano at February 8, 2005 03:08 PM

For what it's worth, I always thought I would never ever buy anything more than a pick or strings from Haight Ashbury but then one day I saw a guitar I just knew I wanted. Being close to my birthday my wife was me and thought it was sweet too. I was like "I can find it cheaper somewhere else." My wife said she would go in and see how much they would knock off the price. I was convinced it would be maybe 25 bucks off the price. She goes up to the loud older dude who runs the place, he is always there, and I am thinking "no way she is getting anything now."

"How much will you knock off the price of this guitar?" she asks. Guy reaches up and goes, "I can knock off 150 right now." I was dumbfounded, 150 was over a 1/4 of the normal price. Needless to say I was stoked and she was beaming with pride for getting a deal at Haight Ashbury from the loud old dude. Now I am all nostalgic that I have a guitar from the Haight. Hocked my ES-135 to Robert at Panhandle for a bass amp the next week.

Made the lunch session more maintenance-like by adding 45 minutes of paddling against the current at the end. Other-wise a fun 2 hour session, with some long rides. Definitely glad I took the Longboard out though. Doof got a good shot of me with the go-pro hero on one of my best rides.

It is February.
