Zorn - Electric Masada

John Zorn - Electric Masada - 50th Birthday Edition Volume 4
Jarring, cerebral, soaring, discordant, strange, abstract, free, deeply grooving, radical. Zorn, as usual, defies easy categorization on this epic album off his own Tzadik label. Masada is the name given to a catalog of arrangements based on Klezmer/Jewish scales written by Zorn in the 80s. The Masada songs have been performed by a plethora of various musical groupings, with or without Zorn's presence. In my opinion Electric Masada kicks the most ass. The band might actually be my favorite band right now, or maybe of all time? Combining jazz fusion, improvisational mastery, celestial-rocking and chilled-out, futuristic sound scapes, this albums takes you through a fleshy spectrum of celebratory musical experience. The band members (Zorn on saxophone; Marc Ribot, guitar; Cyro Baptista, percussion; Jamie Saft, keyboards; Ikue Mori, laptronics; Trevor Dunn, bass; Kenny Wolleson, drums; and special guest Joey Baron, drums) communicate with deep fluidity, letting the music breath in and out, raging then caressing, hammering then soothing. Alternatively spewing hellacious scalding dragon-fire then icy oceanic sea-breezes. The music tests the listener. At times too manic, too crazy, too much. But, in true tension/release formula, the turbulent, difficult sections only tend to sweeten the fruit of the melodic, loping phrases. Like any great album, subtle musical nuances reveal themselves with each successive listen. Electric Masada picks up were Miles' "Bitches Brew" and "On the Corner" left off. It leaves the listener on the edge of their seat, thrilled, disturbed, intrigued, and ultimately... inspired.

Mountains of Madness is the other Electric Masada release. It's a double-CD that's even better that the 50th birthday celebration, in my humble opinion.

Anyone else notice this:

Sonoma County detectives, stumped so far in their 20-month investigation into the mysterious slaying of a young couple on an ocean beach near Jenner, unveiled some items Tuesday collected at the scene -- devil-like faces carved in driftwood, a distinctive beer bottle and a DNA sample they think may have come from the killer.

Investigators are focusing on five different journal entries by authors with distinctive handwriting styles. The observations and reflections were written during the weeks before the killings at a small hut near the young couple's campsite. Investigators would like to know who wrote these entries.

"No one has admitted to being the author of the journal writings," Edmonds said. "Both the style and the content are fairly distinctive for these entries."

Two of the writings involve salutations from someone who calls himself Spiderman. Another journal entry was a rhyme about Santa Claus, leprechauns and the tooth fairy. Another entry, signed by the letter "R" written uniquely, read: "At the Driftwood Inn, alone again, outside of myself and placid as hell ..."

Global Warming Cited in Wind Shift
May 03 4:36 PM US/Eastern
Email this story

By MALCOLM RITTER
AP Science Writer

NEW YORK

An important wind circulation pattern over the Pacific Ocean has begun to weaken because of global warming caused by human activity, something that could alter climate and the marine food chain in the region, new research suggests.

It's not clear what climate changes might arise in the area or possibly beyond, but the long-term effect might resemble some aspects of an El Nino event, a study author said.

El Ninos boost rainfall in the southern United States and western South America and bring dry weather or even drought to Indonesia, Malaysia and elsewhere in the western Pacific.

As for the Pacific food chain near the equator, the slowdown might reduce populations of tiny plants and animals up through the fish that eat them, because of reduced nutrition welling up from the deep, said the author, Gabriel Vecchi.

Vecchi, a visiting scientist at a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lab in Princeton, N.J., and colleagues present their results in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

The slowdown was detected in shipboard and land-based data going back to the mid-1800s. It matches an effect predicted by computer climate simulations that trace global warming to a build-up of heat-trapping greenhouse gases, the researchers report. But simulations that consider only natural influences fail to produce the observed slowdown, Vecchi said.

So, it appears the slowdown is largely due to the man-made buildup of greenhouse gases, the researchers concluded. And the result lends more credibility to computer models that trace global warming to greenhouse gases, at least for their ability to forecast what will happen in the tropics, Vecchi said.

The study focused on what scientists call the Walker circulation, a huge wind pattern that covers almost half the circumference of Earth.

The pattern traces a huge loop. Trade winds blow across the Pacific from east to west. The air rises in the western Pacific and then returns eastward at an altitude of a few miles. Then it sinks back to the surface and starts the loop again.

The new study is based on barometric pressure readings, since differences in air pressure drive winds near the equator. Results suggest the average wind speed in the Walker circulation has weakened by about 3.5 percent since the mid-1800s. It has weakened faster since World War II than in the long-term trend since the mid-1800s, Vecchi said.

Computer simulations say the circulation might weaken another 10 percent by 2100, Vecchi said.

Dennis Hartmann, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington, said the study makes a strong case that the Walker circulation has slowed. While such an effect had been predicted as a result of global warming, he said, "it's not been demonstrated before as clearly as they've done here."

Anyone notice how people from Mexico always end their question with "no?"

For example,

"Your coming out to our place, no?"

"You drive a nice truck, no?"

"How old are you, 35, no?"

Why is this, I wonder. It's a request for affirmation of the negative. Please affirm that I am wrong.

I think the lot's of people you speak of, picked it up from all the Mexicans they know. It isn't as common as you suggest it is, but down south, it is ubiquitous.

I was at a pool party in Mex last week, and it seemed like everyone at the party was doing this.

Hot Carl, what trip that you posted this article. I *know* Gabe Vecchi and am stunned to see him on the blog, just stunned; we went to the same college (undergrad). Awesome guy, he is totally down with the surfers. He's been out at sea tracking buoy data with NOAA, doing tons of El Nino studies, the whole nine. From purely intellectual standpoint, his studies are no joke. I hope everyone pays attention to his findings.

Posted by: Ancient Jetties at May 3, 2006 03:15 PM

jake,
here's what i know from a friend of mine
$1000 fine
6 weeks drug and alcohol training $600
bail your car out of the yard $400
insurance rate increase $2000
taxi and muni bus pass etc for the 3 months your license is suspended $200+

if you are lucky and you blew a .08-.09 perhaps you can get it reduced to a wet reckless which means you'll still be able to drive with a measureable amount of alcohol. If you convicted of dui you can't even be at .01 and behind the wheel

there are some technicalities that officers are supposed to follow for example they are supposed to observe you for some number of minutes before administering the breath test if you belch or blow chunks it supposedly throws off the test
might be worth talking to a lawyer $3000

look like you're gonna need some cash

Surfing icon's son found hanged
April 26, 2006

Mathew, 14, the son of the legendary Shaun Tomson, 55, South Africa's first world surfing champion, apparently took his own life at his home in Virginia, Durban North, on Monday night.

He had allegedly "hanged himself with his school tie", police spokesman Insp Michael Read said last night. He was found by his mother, Carla, who had gone to check on him. He did not leave a note.

His famous father was today expected to arrive in Durban from his home in California, America.

"The South African community is shell-shocked by the news and that's a mild version of how everyone is feeling," said Anthony Brodowicz, himself a world champ.

"Shaun is a surfing icon. What Gary Player is to golf in South Africa, Shaun Tomson is to surfing and he was once described by an international magazine as the Prince Valiant of Surfing. Father and son were very close and for Shaun to suffer such a great loss is an absolute tragedy. There are no words to describe how we all feel."

Mathew, also an avid surfer, moved back from America and started the new year at Clifton College in January.

"He was a wonderful boy, always smiling and had a quick wit. He was a very popular lad and the whole Clifton community is absolutely devastated by this loss. Everyone is totally shocked," said headmaster Brian Mitchell.

Mitchell had the dreadful job of telling the whole school of about 250 boys at yesterday's assembly that their friend had taken his life. "The boys were moved. This has rocked the school," said Mitchell.

Earlier, a group of 15 close friends of Mathew's had been told what had happened by school counsellor, Rob Wyatt-Minter and psychologist, Sandy van Vuuren.

Wyatt-Minter and Van Vuuren were on hand throughout the day to give help and support to any boy who needed it "and will continue to do so as the weeks go by".

While no one knew the reason for the tragedy, "the grief is in the loss". The staff were also "absolutely affected" by the news, said Mitchell.

A source said last night Mathew's mother was "finished". Another friend described Mathew as "a lovely kid who had grown into a beautiful teenager. He was humble and cool."

Yet another declined to comment, saying it was a private family matter and it had nothing to do with anyone else. No details of funeral arrangements have been released, but Brodowicz predicted it would be the "biggest funeral you will ever see".

Posted by: WTF? at May 3, 2006 04:35 PM

Posted by: Ian at May 3, 2006 04:37 PM

I don't think the family gets it either.

By that I mean they are more confused than embarassed.

No note, seemingly no indication of depression so who knows.

Hung by school uniform tie. Perhaps that is the origin of Shaun Thompson's "Schoolboy prank gone awry" statement.
