Coltrane's wail

The night creeps in with darkness and fog.
Memories of laughter and levity enshroud perception.
Coltrane's horn wails in existential angst.
The bittersweet song of humanity.
Frantic explorations of the soul.
Searching for love, light and meaning.
Searching for strength, solidarity, reality.
Frantically searching, looking, seething.
Raging, sobbing, weeping.
Arcing manic tendrils of sonic paint.
Splattering wicked fractals of euphoria.
Deconstructing cultural lattices.
Preconceptions vanquished to a multi-dimensional muse.
Building from within.
Powering from within.
Letting the spirit fly.

e - about Brian...it's not good. I wanted to share this with you first before you heard it from someone else.

It turns out Brian was no where near Bodega on Sunday morning. He never made it home from the city on
Saturday night. I got this photo second hand from a source (who never should have been there in the first
place either). Apparantly Brian ventured deep into the Tenderloin on Saturday afternoon and hasn't emerged
since. We're afraid he's fallen into the hands of the Meth Marauders, turning tricks for crank and, according
to this picture, loving every minute of it.

Save the waves should be called

"exploit the hell out of secret waves so rich gringos can go surf the world, take pictures and expose in the name of conservation"

I'm not aware they have actually made any positive difference, i.e. things panned out for the waves for or against them regardless of any influence this organization had. Typically 3rd world countries whose economic security is more important than surfing, other factors influence their decisions.

However the waves they claim they have "saved" (which typically is not the case) many were secret spots that have now been "ruined" thanks to the exposure. I have surfed one spot before with 2 people in the H20 and after with almost 100???

Will seems like a nice guy, with his heart in the right place, but I think more damage has been done than good. I cannot willingly contribute knowing that my hard earned cash goes to fuel this guys dream surf trips and world travel lifestyle that results is local secrets exposed.

Thought I’d pick up yesterday’s thread, someone asked…

First day at Lindy? October 1st 2004 – also first day of surfing ever. I was on my friend’s (he’s now my boyfriend – go figure) beautiful 9 foot Hawaiian Iggy/Nash . Looking back I can’t believe he gave a total novice such a beautiful board to paddle out on. At the time I was embroiled in a vicious business litigation, really ugly stuff and after about a year of judges and lawyers it was taking a severe toll on my emotional, financial and physical well being. It couldn’t have been very big that day because I made it to the outside (with a little coaching from my friend) after playing around in the white water and catching a ride on some inside ripples. I clearly remember how I was both terrified and thrilled as I made it over the incoming waves and then barely being able to balance as I sat on my board and attempted to blend in once I was in the line-up. It wasn’t sunny, but I was humbled contemplating the vast Pacific as I gazed out toward Pedro Point and into the mist beyond. I felt a flutter in my stomach that I hadn’t experienced since I was a kid and still believed in Santa. I got my first wave that day but that wasn’t the moment I knew I was hooked. I knew I was hooked when I was changing out of my rented wetsuit in the frigid morning air. I realized that for the past hour and a half, I didn’t think of one other thing, not the lawsuit, not my diminishing savings, not my lawyers. I was completely and utterly in the present moment, fully and totally alive. I knew at that moment I was going surfing again as soon as possible and that my life was going to change.

So yeah, I missed out on “gromhood” and I get a bit squeamish when it’s overhead and I still make tons of mistakes but I’ve never regretted one second in the water. As a woman, I don’t expect special treatment in the line-up and I always appreciate good manners from both sexes. I smile at my fellow humans/surfers and do my best to live the Aloha spirit here in California. Most of the time people reflect that back to me. It’s a good way to live. Peace & surf.
(hola JK)

I started surfing in 1993. I bought a used soft longboard and a wetsuit from Wise. They told me in the shop to go to Pacifica to learn.

I went out at the Pacifica pier 3 or 4 times, until someone saw me and told me to drive down to Linda Mar. I was amazed how much easier Linda Mar was than the Pacifica pier.

The worst part of surfing is the "scene". The best part is surfing.

First Ocean Beach:

Rode N-Judah (no car), changed in the dunes, stashed stuff, got nowhere fast in the water, suddenly outside, pearled every time, got out of the water at Cliff House, walked back, changed, rode N-Judah to US Mint, walked home to 17th and Dolores.

First Lindamar:

Went with Friend #1...then he was Friend #2 (name changed when Friend #1 essentially decided to drink mroe than surf). Anyway, rode waves for about 4-6 hours in one session at the Boathouse. I was shouted at by a longboarder for my poor standing up skills (Stand up! You are frustrating me! Stand up!!!!) I was a better surfer at the end of the day, but lost all skill by next session.

First Linda Mar:

Was up for a weekend with a date (lived in Laguna Bch at the time) that was going from bad to worse every minute. Borrowed my friend's board and wetsuit and he took me to Lindy. It was January and about 6-8 ft closeouts. Couldn't understand where everyone was? Got some fun drops, went in and instead of uncomfortable silence on the flight back to SoCal, I had uncomfortable silence with dancing closeouts in my head.

First OB:
Moved to the Richmond neighborhood but left my car and board in SoCal. Borrowed (see any trends?) a longboard and went out with my roommate to overhead WFVs. Given that I was regularly surfing Huntington to Church, I had no clue. Took this late air drop (unintentionally) and faced my first full on OB washing machine hold down. Came up to a guy saying, incredible drop! Strange compliment given how worked I got.

Been surfing her on a hperf longboard ever since and loyalty and respect have been replacing my vitriol and fear each and every day...

I interviewed Will Henry and ran a feature on Save the Waves a year ago- the organization is a good one, believe me. Sure, at times he is forced to draw exposure to little known breaks overseas, but as Will put it "I'd rather have a few more people know about a wave than no wave at all".
Will pretty much single handedly saved the point breaks of Madeira, and has put great effort into other projects around the world. One of his concerns is local villages that rely on surf tourism to stay afloat; when the waves go, so do they. Saying Will Henry exlpoits waves is ridiculous- he is protecting a limited resource for all of us to enjoy. Go Will, go.

Posted by: willing to give this guy a chance at May 2, 2006 01:26 PM

I know for a fact he uses foundation money to go on sick surf spot and scope new ones- that may have some remote possibility of becoming endangered. crap

Forced to draw exposure- total crap.

Most of these communities HAVE NO PREVIOUS SURF INDUSTRY BECAUSE THEY ARE SECRET SPOTS.

They are small fishing villages, that need harbors or a breakwall to protect their homes. Offering surf tourism as a resource after the fact, does not count in my book. Most of the locals would rather be fisherman with their spot still secret- just ask them.

Who typically runs surf camps???? GRINGOS and FORIGENERS. Does this really benifit the community or provide and money for a lifestyle

2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.

3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.

4. Over 2/3's of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal whose births were paid for by taxpayers.

5. Nearly 25% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.

6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.

7. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.

The cost of illegal immigration to the American taxpayer in 1997 was a NET (after subtracting taxes immigrants pay) $70 BILLION a year, [Professor Donald Huddle, Rice University].

Willing to Give- Can't say I know where all his funding goes, but I know he's got an office in Davenport with two employees (as of last year) who field calls from surfers across the world in order to combat governments/developers etc...
And no, Save the Waves doesn't expose every break it helps preserve, that's why you don't hear about many of its successes.
Waves are a resource. They need protection, and Surfrider, for the most part, doesn't handle international issues.
Will Henry is also a free-lance photo-journalist and gets published in the surf mags (check out the current issue of Surfing) to pay his bills. If you have something against that, fine, but I'm not going to waste my time arguing about the pros/cons of surf media.

Please, this whole immigration issue is a distraction from the iraq war and the coming iran war. It's a non issue, the mexicans havn't made yours or anyone else's life suck. Demogogic politicians are just trying to manipulate the easily manipulated.

Now back to surfing talk, and especially where it relates to Brian.

you guys need to wake up. Illegal immigrants, mostly from Mexico and Central America, cost our State alone Billions in unpaid taxes, reduced wages, increased medical, car, and life insurance. There is more pollution, trash, disease and strain on our schools. Sure your artichoke is 24 cents cheaper but the ultra rich farm owner, developers, fast food restraunt owners, (as well as the 1000's of other employers)are raking it in because they pay super low wages. All you liberals bitch about low wages when all of this illegal labor force is drastically reducing the wages for the jobs they are taking. And if you think they are taking jobs "we" won't do go to the shipyards, construction sites, go everywhere and you will find them. Talk to your teenage brothers, nieces, nephews and see how hard it is for them to get a summer job. Our prisons are jammed full of the rejects from Mexico. You cannot argue that it is not a serious drain on our nation. MAKE MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA stop operating corrupt societies, keep them in their own countries and let them rise up, rebel, have a civil war in their own country and make it right.

Here is my opinion on ILLEGAL immigration. I am not against immigration. I am against illegal immigration. Calling an illegal immigrant an undocumented worker or just an immigrant is an injustice to all the legal immigrants who came to this country. I support new legislation that would create a immigrant worker visa. I also support the building of a wall along the Mexican border.
Well that's my opinion anyway.

There are very few mexicans who surf in cali, so i can care less.

Embarrassed,
I've been surfing for 25 years and have never gotten a barrel on purpose and made it out. My problem is that I like to go as fast as possible. I can not help it. As soon as I catch a wave I go as fast as I can and cut back hard, then do it again. I have only recently started trying to get barrelled but have yet to succeed. The funny thing is people think I'm a good surfer. I could never admit to them my lack of barrels.

If you read/look around, the sentiment below is a pretty common opinion from inside the immigrant culture:

[excerpt]
Miguel Cruz, who came to the United States from Peru at age 9 and works for the Social Security Administration, said Monday's demonstrators "are demonstrating that they really are not immigrants. They don't act like immigrants. They don't behave like immigrants. Immigrants are those who come here legally and those who remain here legally. ... Immigrants are proud and grateful to be here and eager to learn English, eager to assimilate and acculturate. Real immigrants will embrace and obey the laws of America."
[/excerpt]

Me, I like the Latinos, sure, but I strongly believe they need to follow the same path to legitimate citizenship or they will be looked upon as second-rate. My own grandparents did all the hard work naturalizing and adjusting (and most of all they truly had their hearts in it) so that these people don't have to? I think not. You cannot just have it fall into your lap here.

Posted by: Ancient Jetties at May 2, 2006 04:33 PM

Unlss you're backdooring a throwing lip, you have to kind-of stall the board to puinsai, people who never get barreled are more or less skimming and not quite pressing down hard aenough against the uplift of water (to initiate the stall). Get your heels into it and lean back.

jaques haas, your 'Karl Rove' comments are tired. if someone has a conservative view, or a view different from yours, then it is a 'Karl Rove' opinion. it's kinda like saying if you are against ILLEGAL immigration, then you are a racist. very generic.

get a real opinion and dont hide behind the name calling. Thanks.

I'm Mexican, my mom was undocumented (illegal), that said I don't believe we should open the borders and let people flood in. I don't think that it should be easy to get here, and it isn't, never has been. But a third of my students are illegal and half have a family member that is illegal. I see them as real people, people I care about. they are doing what many of you would do for your families, work tirelessly so one day your kids won't have too(suposedly).

Part of the culture of California is Chicano Latino Raza always has been. My grandfather was a native of Arizona who migrated to Salinas before the depression and then was deported to Mexico when the Okies arrived. He never came back to America. I have a lot of relatives in Mexico, who come into the US and leave the US with no intention of ever living here.

Mexico is also heavily responsible for the problem, if the government would have some cajones and stand up to the US trade policies maybe they could solve some of their problems and the people could live a better life in Mexico.

But if you have a problem with ILLEGALS don't support the businesses and products they produce... good luck.

THERE IS MORE WHITE PEOPLE ON WELFARE, WIC AND GETTING MONEY FROM THE STATE THAN HISPANICS, ASIAS,ETC...
tHERE IS MORE WHITE PEOPLE THAT GO TO HOSPITALS AND DON'T PAY SHIT. MORE THAN INMIGRANTS.
sO WILL BE GOOD FOR THOSE HARD WORKER INMIGRANTS TO GET THEIR PAPERS. tHEY WILL PAY TAXES THEN.
WHENEVER THERE IS A CAR ACCIDENT WITH ONE OF THEM, yOU ENDUP LOOSING.
cAUSE YOU CAN'T TAKE THEM TO COURT, OR FILE ANY CLAIMS AGAINST THEM CAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE ANYTHING.
THIS WILL BE A GOOD STEP FORWARD. OF COURSE!THEY SHOULD DO A SERIOUS BACKROUND CHECK AND DEPORT THE BUMS AND LAZY KOOKS OUT OF HERE. NOT THE FAMILIES OR HARD WORKING GUYS. STOP WITH THE RAZISM, AGAIN WHITE GUYS SCREW UP THEIR OWN COUNTRY MORE THAN INMIGRANTS. BELIEVE IT OR NOT!.

Posted by: Jiu Jitsu Motto at May 2, 2006 08:02 PM

Look on this whole immigration debate...the problem (imho) is that it's a case of the horse having already bolted.

You can make sensible arguments for both sides sure.

But the reality is that you have 12m or so illegals who are a massive part of the economy.

You cannot give them all amnesty.
You cannot send them all home.

It's very difficult to find some sensible, enforceable middle ground.

Which is why sod all has been done on this upto now. There is no sensible solution that doesn't cause massive problems.

It's the usual US dichotomy. Wanting it everyway. Turning a blind eye to something wrong cause we benefit. Then complaining at the same thing because we think it's unfair.

Welcome to reality.

I cannot think of a sensible solution. My money is on the fact that NOTHING of any significance will happen.

No doubt they will spin some BS - but there is no simple fix right now.

Posted by: at May 2, 2006 10:08 PM

Let's get all the talking points on the table, jacques

Illegals do a LOT of low wage work in the USA, and that has a LOT of economic value to the USA.

Illegals depress wages for blue collar work in the USA.

That wage depression fights inflation.

Illegals receive a lot of government services, medicare and welfare, despite the fact that they are not citizens.

Many illegals use phony SS numbers and pay into Social Security, a LOT of money, despite the fact that they will never be able to collect it.

Illegals commit WAY WAY WAY too much crime in the southern California area. Illegals bring WAY WAY WAY too many rare diseases into the USA. Part of legal immigration is a health check, and criminal background check, neither of those are done on illegals, and they commit a lot of crime and bring a lot of disease (tuberculosis, leprosy, and others) into the USA.

Most of the USA were immigrants at some point.

Personally, I think every illegal should be catalogued. Checked for a criminal record. No one who has committed a felony stays. Those that are currently incarcerated get deported when they get out, and if their government doesn't want them let them incarcerate them. Those who have disease are deported if they do not have immediate medical attention needs. If they do have medical attention needs, they are treated, they have to pay for it, if they cannot pay they are deported. Anyone who cannot get a US legal employer to back them is deported.

That leaves us with illegals who
1) are not criminals
2) are healthy
3) are working

They all have to perform a period of indentured servitude. This means they pay extra tax for 5 years. They are paid at legal US wage rates. Then they are citizens. If they commit a felony in the meanwhile, they get deported. Zero tolerance for criminals who are immigrants. In essence, this would admit our immigration is currently too slow, and provide a mechanisms for speeding it up, while at the same time putting some checks on immigrations for people who will be a net loss were they to immigrate.

Posted by: Immigration debate at May 3, 2006 06:56 AM

Moraga, Noriega, Ortega, Pacheco, Quintara, Rivera, Santiago, Ulloa and Vicente were all named after immigrants. And, I’m pretty sure that Judah and Sloat showed up in San Francisco sometime after them. Irving, however, was actually named after a local Jewish delicatessen owner although his family was originally from Russia.

Posted by: Spiderman at May 3, 2006 07:14 AM

Oh, and despite all the fusing done by our "Local Boyz," Kelly's Cove was not named after a little girl. Yep, there was a time when the Irish came here to do the work that earlier immigrants refused to do.

REALITY not RACISM-

Center for Immigration Studies is a rightwing thinktank formed to support the more activist work of the anti-immigrant Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Anything you get from them is completely biased.

Look, you can argue any way you like on immigration. The problem, and the solution, lies with business. Business wants low wage workers, which has been the enduring theme of the US since slave were being imported. Corporations have always controlled the US and have always made laws to keep low wage workers. The two party system is perfect for sustaining this. The church also helps sustain this.

You want to stop it?

You have to elect representatives who will go after businesses. Any officers and employers of business, along with individuals, who employ illegal aliens or use contract labor consisting of illegal aliens, have to face serious fines and/or jail time. If the work goes away, illegal immigration stops.

Now I certainly feel for immigrants who are only trying to earn a living and increase there standard of living, but we have citizens who can no longer do the same because of the influx of illegals depressing wages. I also feel for the immigrants because they are easily exploited by employers.

I don't know what to do with those already here, but we can stop more from coming by passing and inforcing laws against businesses who use illegal labor.

Do you think the corporate whores in government will pass such laws? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! Never.

Oh, also, almost everything REALITY not RACISM is pure bullshit, as if you did not already know. Man, if he really wants to defend 'Murica, whi isn't he in Iraq. He should fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here. He can shoot brown people over there! (I bet he gets wood when he reads that, but I bet he is already a member of the 82nd Chairborne or the 101st Keyboard Fighters!)
