Brainiac Dum-Dum

Buoy readings are giant.
It's 8pm and Ted gets the call from his boy.
On the road by 10, Baja bound.
Drive all night.
In-n-out burger.
Slayer, Melvins, Body Count pump-up jams.
Over the border then drive through the desert.
Past Ensenada.
Past closed-up roadside taco stands.
Cactus graveyards in the moonlight.
Vultures skulking.
Brilliant sky full of stars.
Off the main road at the secret turnoff.
Bumpy, washboard dirt road.
Oh my god we're gonna score!!
YES YES YES YES!
Rattling for a few hours.
No sleep delirium.
Dusty, rock-strewn, Mad-Maxian landscape.
Sun just starting to peak up.
Ocean in view in the distance.
Everything else brown.
Endless brown and then a swath of resplendent blue.
Butt-ass desert dawn cold.
Inner-nostril-snot freezing cold.
Finally creep out at the end of the road.
Huge bluff with the point underneath.
Out of the car and jog over to the edge.
WTF!!!
Flat, zilch, nada.
Skunked.
ARRGGHGHGH!!!

Anyone kayak to work today?

Posted by: trump vacations at April 4, 2006 10:32 AM

Like I said, Pimp.

Your old stomping grounds just got a lot less crowded.

Drove past Ryan Seelback getting into his suit at Taraval.

Watched from Sloat as a guy exits the water with that despondent look that says denial.

Worse yet his friend made it so he sits in his wetsuit on the bluff, board over his knees.

One charger just getting through the inside line.

A couple way outside.

Saw one big drop where the guy looked like he wished his board was longer.

Lots of waiting in very cold conditions, and me with my alternate suit.

Good excuse that one. As it did look very Doable.

Duncan later told me when he watched, guys flew north on the inside current.

Could have been tougher than it looked.

Judith checked and passed, I later saw her on the North end on my way to work, she was passing again.

It's out there.

A bit of work though.

z - Glad to hear Jeff has been of some help to you. The whole thing with accupuncture is that for acute pain and recovery from a recent injury, you can often see positive results pretty quickly. For chronic pain from old injuries or repeated re-injury, it requires a commitment of time and attention (and MONEY) that some aren't able or willing to invest - but it treats the root cause of the pain, not just the symptom of discomfort. Sometimes it can even help reveal stuff about our behavior that may be preventing us from healing properly - crappy diet; smoking; not enough exercise; too much exercise; wrong KIND of exercise ...
In any case, good luck and like kdalle used to say, "Keep surfing no matter what!" - well, at least when your back is ready for it.

Surfed with Danny Rip It Up on my Larry Merrick twin finner fish in double D overhead waves at RINCON this morning. On our way north we surfed HAMMONDS then SANDSPIT. For lunch we had burgers at Kahuna Burger at the mall in Goleta. It was served with RANCH STYLE BEANS. Through San Luis we surfed HAZARDS then we stopped in BIG SUR and surfed FULLERS rights before heading to MOSS but that was blown so Juan Lopez guided us the rest of the way to MANRESA then we stopped for more waves at THE LANE. Too crowded so we surfed 4 MILE instead but the gnarly dude paddler guy told us to BEAT IT so we ended up murphing MONTARA but it was so crowded we had to go all the way around the goddamned globe and ended up at OCEAN BEACH SAN FRANCISCO but it was WAY too big according to Johhny Fuk Lip. From there Rad Vibe guided us to FORT POINT. We stay with him tonight and then tomorrow we head North to POINT ARENA with Doc Hazard. Stay tuned for my report tonight after the evening news with Catie Couric.

If I was better at the zeros and ones, I would recommend a "relevancy" button. Think of it similar to Digg.com or the like where the commmunity can rank each post or comment.

Let the masses rank a post or edit a post. If the community thinks a post sucks and should get deleted, then say it would take 5 "diggs" to remove it and the comment is gone.

Moterated by the public for the public. Take it out of E's hands and let y'all regulate yourselves like an old crusty local should regulate his sacred spot.

Makes sense to me.

I love the relevancy button idea and would glady set it up. Could make it so each IP only gets one vote per post, which would easily make it so the BVBs of the world can't flag multiple times.

So have some threshhold system, like more than, say, 10 flags and the post goes to a "needs approval" bin and then E logs in and either deletes it or resets the flagging.

Obviously the numbers of the various threshholds will need tuning, but it's as easy as changing a variable once it's set up.

I'd also like to show IPs next to postings. Maybe not the actual IPs, but some identifying number that's the same for each IP, so even if we don't know the name or IP of the poster, we at least know which postings are from the same person.

Good rainy day project for the recently surfless.

Posted by: baj at April 4, 2006 01:47 PM

wrybread, you dont know much about IP addressing. did you know that multiple users can have the same IP address? did you know that all we have to do is reboot our routers and we get different IP addresses?

i say, if it gets to the point that you guys want to moderate it so closely, just go start a Yahoo group or Google group. sounds like you have too much time on your hands if you want to start monitoring IP addresses. i thought E had a job.

who the F cares? just ignore the idiots and they will eventually leave.

Question / answer

I'd go for Bali personally. Depends what you like. Tahiti is more of a package deal, expensive, not easy to get around cheaply - and for 10 days you're not going to see too much.

Bali has much more for the independant traveller - crap load to see and do on all levels, and a much more interesting diversity of people (not that I've got anything against rich french - but you do get a bit sick of them in Tahiti).

Plus as was said 17 days - you can stop elsewhere and tag on another element to the trip.
have fun

Posted by: at April 4, 2006 01:53 PM

re boot your router and get a new IP address? Me thinks you need to do some more reading before talking out of context bollocks.

But yes you are correct that some ISP's (such as AOL) may show the same IP multiple times. however this is the exception not the norm.

Posted by: at April 4, 2006 01:54 PM

google "DHCP" and you will figure it out. All ISP's use DHCP unless you pay extra.

if you have SBC DSL at home, or Comcast cable modem, reboot it and you will see that you have a different IP address. look at whatismyip(dot)com after each reboot.

try it before you pass judgement, bollocks kisser.

"We used to CHARGE!"

"After a few too many shots to the head I decided to completely withdraw. I became sullen and I'd give stink eye to just abut everyone I saw in the water. It was ugly. My face was ugly."

"...these days I manage my anger and energy by putting it into the actual act of surfing. "

Posted by: toad at April 4, 2006 02:12 PM

About the DHCP issue, yeah in theory people could reboot their routers, and whatever, let them do it. We could also use a cookie system, and yeah, they could clear their cookies. It's not foolproof, but it'll get rid of most of the fools, and so easy to implement.

Look at Craigslist's system where they have the flag system to let users flag. Sure someone could reboot their routers and flag multiple times, but in general it works.

And rememember that the only thing flagging does is put the post into a purgatory where E or whoever could check "delete" or "ignore flags". So it wouldn't matter that much even if someone did game the system.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care that much, I find most of the idiot postings funny. But E's clearly getting exasperated, and I think we could fix the issue or at least make it way more managable really easily.

wrybread, if it is that big of a deal for you to know who is posting, you guys need to set up your own yahoo group. if E didnt want this thing open to the public, he would have shut it down long ago. i think he also gets a kick out of the humorous idiots.

bloggers write on blogs so that people read what they say, if not, he would write in a journal at home where nobody could read it.

complaining about people posting on your open blog is like lindsay lohan complaining about paparazzi. just my thoughts.

did the baja excursion last week. went about halfway down the pennisula only to find...crowded waves! i couldn't believe it. here i was, 500 miles south of the boarder and a group of 25 san diegan's show up and the break is instantly crowded. after much scowling and vibing, my friend and i decide to move north and check out a remote point that looks far off the beaten path. after a half day's drive along a bumpy washed out dirt almost-road, we get to the coast after dark, make camp, drink a few tecates and head to bed. awake at dawn to discover we're not at the point, we can see it a few miles south. backtrack along the dirt "road" and find a way along the bluffs. get out of the car, and sure enough, down below, a huge wrap-around point is bringing in the swell and sending peelers into a little bay. there is nobody around for miles. the only signs of life are a wandering coyote and few vulchers. we make the treacherous hike down to the break, but the tide seems too low and the swell is supposed to be filling in all day. we take naps underneath crevaces in the rock and wait. a few hours later, we begin to see more and more good waves. we paddle out and surf head high perfection for as long as our arms can stand. it was a session to remember. warm, blue water, total isolation, staggering red/brown desert mountains, and pitching, thumping walls marching towards this beautiful desolation. baja is a long, parched desert road full of hazard with a long, right-hand point break waiting for those willing to charge into its bleakness.

Who was that getting those sick right hand barrels this morning? Good steeeeez, yo. Great waves today, until two guys got super agro and jock with each other. Give everyone out in the water a break and drop it, or take into the shore if you can't swallow your pride. Totally brings the stoke level down.

See you on the high-tide magic.

Posted by: baj at April 4, 2006 05:53 PM

Slugger, nice one. Just got back from Baha a little while ago and had a similar experience. Best waves I've had since Maui. Fierce desert down there though, nothing but cacti... liked it a lot. I was surprised the water was so cold, I wore my old 4/3 wetsuit, and it was just about right. Wouldn't have expected it so far south.
E, thanks for keeping the stoke up- niceness rules.

Posted by: welle at April 4, 2006 06:04 PM

knowers know, that the two guys sitting in lawn chairs checking out that sweet right probably just got done skating the empty pool nearby....... great story e, I really enjoyed it!

Actually those guys are really happy with themselves because they have just finished 3 solid hours of very impressive posts on E's website from their WebSat-enabled PalmTops.

Bummer about Coombs.

I think you can only ski La Grave so long without doing yourself some major damage. that place is insane - so many ways to kill yourself. You just need to catch and edge in the wrong place and it's all over.

Back in town and hit the beach today. Christ I'd forgotten what a bitch ob can be. Paddle out in to some reasonable size mid beach - not thinking it's going to be a pain.

35 mins later still duckdiving I snap my leash.

Back to car, hack together a new one.

20 min paddle out to the outside.

10 mins later it switches to evil onshore. Current picks up.

Spend the next 45 mins trying to get into mushy closeouts and stay in postion.

Catch a crappy wave in. Dropped off into crappy reforms.

Struggle for 15 mins to actually get to the beach.

20 min walk back to car.

Ahh OB!

Oh and E - if you want to filter out some of the negative stuff - why not do what so many other forums have done and go to register to post.

You wanna post you register and get a link via email. Then you can post (you can always make a wait period if things get really bad).

the site remains unchanged other than that. Everyone can still read it just the same.

your problem is not unique at all - many a core quality discussion on forums have to deal with crap and filter it out in order to maintain quality. Mostly they use a register system.

I really think that would improve the place no end - I know there are many like me that read quite frequently but cannot really be bothered to post too much because so much crap gets slung about.

I think you will find that the quality of discussion would go up, whilst you will still get interesting pics, tits, etc... posted by regulars. I think that most of your interesting posters would register, and maintain the good side of the board, and after a while most of the bad apples will drift away.

Anyhow just my 2 cents.

Dead pan variants take this launch too seriously. It's only words. Try to have a sense of difference and humour about it. Heal this. And to you you you anon anon anon it ain't just about life and it sure the fuk isn't just about surfing. This I found out today hobbling back alone from the proverbial beach. It's life as art and living freely thinking, like all the smarty pants motherfuckers dropping in on E. We trash his ass because its shit you need to pancake. Obviuosly. Ain't nobody maybe gunna kick your ass or come to the house that you rented after Blake. Heighten your brain wave count. What matters is the drop and a long long long right wave and no rape at the end. How is this?!
Stop the exploitation. Work for the good. Be weird. Try difference. A wall is being built but always remember that you can't build walls around life.

Posted by: thank you for that at April 4, 2006 07:36 PM

anyone want to meet at the windmill to give me some head? How about those faggots from Mollusk surf shop? Hope you read this faggots cuz your days are numbered, bring your gay ass fish boards too. I'll shuv that right in your cornholes. Come down to the cove with your fishes, we need a new set of fluffers.

Posted by: Mollusk surf shop is GAY at April 4, 2006 07:59 PM

Wow, thanks BlakeWadus for that interesting glimpse into a very confused and disorganized mind.

And I agree, registration system would probably do it.

Posted by: at April 4, 2006 08:05 PM

So let's get this straight.

-Mollusk surf shop and everyone who works there is gay.
-You want head from them.

What does that make you? Not that there's anything wrong with your sexual preference. Nobody here judges. But you're making it sound like anyone who is gay, is inferior to you.

Now, since most children learn simple logic at the age of 2-3 years old. We can all put this riddle together.

You're posting to the wrong website.

Posted by: at April 4, 2006 08:12 PM

It's too bad we live in such a diverse area, and there are still ignor-anuses who have such a closed mind. Ahhhhhhh... Gay's everywhere!! I hate them, they might take over the city!! Wow.. Please. I was going to say "grow up" but you're probably "grown up" anyway. If it hasn't happened yet, chances are it's not going to. But we all have faith in you. It's NEVER too late.

Posted by: at April 4, 2006 08:17 PM

And who says "your days are numbered" hahahaha... You gunna bring your six-shooter to the OK coral?

Wow anonymity is fun when you use it to back up stoke, instead of start problems. Yeah, maybe I'm fueling the fire, but probably, no one's going to read any of this anyway.

And by the way, it's not that I even like Mollusk anyway. You could have said it about Wise or Aqua, and I woud've said the same thing. By the way I don't work there either, so don't jump to that conclusion.

Too bad I'm too scared to post my name. I wish I wasn't. I'm not a local, and no one even knows who I am anyway, but the risk is too high of someone wanting to beat me up for standing up (although a bit cowardly) to someone who is just as much a coward as I am.

If you have a problem with someone, or some establishment, why don't you talk to them about it. Write them a letter, and let them read it, instead of posting to here where everyone's just going to laugh at you anyway.

Anyway, surfing's supposed to be fun. Someone forgot that.

Posted by: at April 4, 2006 08:28 PM

Mollusk has style and some cool boards too

Posted by: at April 4, 2006 08:53 PM
