Sven's Song

Sven grew up in a picturesque Norwegian mountain town.
Snowboarding ruled the scene and he and his rat-pack of friends tried to follow in Terje's footsteps with each carve and air.
By high-school the scene turned emo.
Sven's musical upbringing positioned him perfectly to be the keyboardist/songwriter/arranger for the hippest band in town.
Soon the band got huge and they toured the world.
Sold out gigs.
Buckets of money.
Living large.
A few years later Sven bought a house in Malibu.
By now he'd melded into the fast-living high-society of hollywood.
His new band had a party/gig at this underground warehouse-space downtown.
The arty/hipster/fashionista/hip-movie-star set would be there in full force.
By 11pm the party was firing.
Everyone dancing and sniffing and hot.
Sven was on the drums.
Sweaty, grooving, rocking.
Hundreds of folks dancing like mad all around him.
A few really cute girls huddled behind him, doe-eyed.
Frozen by his stardom and effortless oozing coolness.
After the set he and the band went to a room backstage.
A cadre of the doe-eyed vixens followed.
The full-blast, post-show high radiating through Sven's essence.
The next band already cooking.
One of the lady-fans offered Sven a grape from her lovely fingers.
She then straddled Sven and sat down on his lap.
Began grinding slowly.
Sven chuckled and simply enjoyed this overt display of affection.
He sipped on water. Ate more grapes. Made small talk with the girls.
Eric Avery from Jane's Addiction was playing in the next band.
He busted into the room and gave Sven a big hug, ignoring the girl on his lap.
"Sven man! You gotta sit-in on keys for us. Jonny can't make it!"
"No problem my friend. Let's do this!"
And the night went on... till about 6 in the morning.
Sven drove back to his pimping pad, nestled in the northern reaches of Malibu, above Pepperdine but before Zuma.
The sun just rising over the hills to the east.
The grape-feeding, lap-sitting girl returned with him.
Olive skin, green eyes, cute little body.
Intelligent, assertive, hippy-styled.
They made-out for a while and cuddled and snuggled on his deck overlooking the ocean.
She rolled up a big spliff and they took a few tokes.
Turns out she's a surfer and, hey look, the waves right out front at the point look really good.
Sven says, yeah, hey I actually have a girl's wetsuit in the garage and a few boards. Why don't we go for a surf.
So they giggle and joke and change into their wetsuits in the garage and then scamper down the little trail to the rock-strewn point.
The girl can seriously surf and she's whacking off the lip and pumping for speed down the line.
Sven hasn't surfed much and he doesn't smoke much weed either so he sits out there tripping out on the cliffs and the pelicans and the waves.
After 30 minutes he still hasn't caught anything and it's starting to get crowded.
The girl basically pushes him into a wave and Sven is gliding down the line on his belly.
Looking down through the clear water as rocks and sea-objects pass by underneath.
He's so stoned he can't really remember to stand up. He's just loving the belly ride.
Then he hears the girl yell from behind him, "SVEN!! STAND UP DUDE!!!"
So he kookily stands up on his longboard, almost wiping out. But he makes it.
He's amazed by the look of the glassy, unbroken wave unfurling before him.
He just stands there and let's the wave whisk him along.
He rides it all the way in until his board scrapes on some rocks.
Then he walks up to the beach and lays down in the sand in the now-warm sunshine.
The girl comes in on the next wave and lays down next to him.
The two fall asleep next to each other on that sun-drenched california morning.

Swedish surf competition. Freezing air, freezing water, shitty waves but these guys are stoked - the commentator (in Swedish) is fired up. Watch the award giving at the end - prize money handed out in cash - sweet.

Think of these guys next time you're bitching about naming/claiming/crowds/etc.

dood, that totally took me there, I had to go rub one out after slowly grinding on Sven's lap. The part about bellyriding the wave stoned was really cool too, think I'll start surfing.

Watched "What The Bleep Do We know." this weekend. I highly reccomend this film for anyone pursuing happiness. Or anyone that needs a good metaphysical kick in the ass.

woke up early sunday morning, jonesing for a little more surf after a fun saturday...but the rains & winds were looming. drove out to the beach to see if there could be any salvageable surf before the storm rolled in. krazy kite-man was all uppity about the looming southwest winds, but they never materialized. a least an hour of smooth baby waves, fun little peeling shorebreak, maybe three guys in the whole lineup...plenty of fun for a day that had been mentally written off.

maybe the tunnel will get done faster?

That Towner pic is nuts. At the Billabong XXL they have the "Monster Tube" contest. Most of the entries are tow-in. One is Towner's paddle-in at Shipstern. Guy makes the drop, pulls in, gets inches from making it out, and gets obliterated. He gets insanely deep. Mad props for the paddle effort being compared to Shane Dorian getting deeply tubed, and making it, at Choa-poo. And, Mel's backdoor right through the Mavs pit. But the airdrop is not the same wave as the one shown in the vid.

3to5setsof7 - Is that the same "What the Bleep do We Know?" that came out a couple of years ago? If so, I saw it on a hot Sunday afternoon in Healdsburg, while waiting for weekend freeway traffic to thin. I thought it hokum and was bugged by the film's basic premise that there is no objective reality; that nothing exists unless we think it does. So I looked for some reviews back then and found some interesting stuff.
According to the physicist from Columbia featured prominently in the film, David Albert, it is a twisted missinterpretation of quatum mechanics. He says:
"I was edited in such a way as to completely suppress my actual views about the matters the movie discusses. I am, indeed, profoundly unsympathetic to attempts at linking quantum mechanics with consciousness. Moreover, I explained all that, at great length, on camera, to the producers of the film ... Had I known that I would have been so radically misrepresented in the movie, I would certainly not have agreed to be filmed." - from an interview with salon.com
The film's claim that a group of Transcendental Meditators reduced crime by 25%? John Hegelin's (Maharishi University) 1994 report actually says 18%, but never mind that. The real problem is that there were no double-blind controls in effect in his research and all of the members of the so-called "independent scientific review board" involved in the report and touted in the film were TMers. BTW, Hegelin got the Ig Noble Prize in 1994 for his original report.
That blonde woman with the accent? "Ramtha?" She's actually from Washington State and claims to channel this guy Ramtha from Atlantis. That's supposedly who you hear in the film. The film makers are all members of the Ramtha School of Enlightenment. The movie is a long info-mercial for these guys.
No offense, but I ain't goin' for their particular brand of okey-doke.
I like what Philip K. Dick said, "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."

Jimmie - The same one. Yeah there are some claims to be refuted for sure. I still enjoy and agree with many of the ideas out thier. Espically the physiology of addiction. The Ramatha channeling stuff was kinda of funny. Some of the other concepts discussed where also like the creative energy flow that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi books discuss.

I thought the water crystals are fascinating. And wonder what water crystals look like on a peeling 6' wave on a glassy afternoon.

Posted by: L. Ron Hubba at April 3, 2006 04:01 PM

nada, but there's plenty wrong with showing a really smart philosopher (albert), who has dedicated his life to getting conceptually clear about the foundations of physics, in a way that makes it look like he holds views that are (a) dumb and (b) nothing like his actual views. gee-whiz pseudo-thought can be fun, though.

Posted by: kloo at April 3, 2006 04:07 PM

how could that guy possibly argue with the nifty special effects though? I man come on!

however, seriously, setting positive intention works in my life and always has. the movie presented many valid concepts even if it did play fast and loose for the sake of entertainment.
