Holy crap, The surf was shitty this morning.
After battling demons all night, it was a mission to get in the water.
At one point this wind blown wave came in and i stood up.
It was pretty much my only wave. Oh my.
Then this other wave came and I took off on it.
A huge section started to throw so i kicked out .
Man, barrels are non existent in san francisco .
Then a guy paddled out.
He started crying and i was feeling his pain .
Later in the session i felt a strange pain in my back .
Crazy!
But after all that it was great to get back in my warm car .
Shiiiit.

Holy crumbly faces Batman, The surf was @#$&%! this morning.
After battling demons all night, it was cleansing to get in the water.
At one point this SICK wave came in and i got pitched .
It was terrifying . Oh my.
Then this other wave came and I took off on it.
A huge section started to throw so i widened my stance and bent at the waist .
Man, barrels are @#$%! .
Then Riddler paddled out.
He started riddling and i was stumped Batman .
Later in the session i felt a strange urge to pee in my tights .
Crazy!
But after all that it was a relief to pee .

Holy matzah ball, The surf was religious this morning.
After battling demons all night, it was ravishing to get in the water.
At one point this inside-out wave came in and i florped to the 84th dimension of flamboyance.
It was based on the dynamic interchange of tectonic flutter . Oh my.
Then this other wave came and I took off on it.
A huge section started to throw so i flummuxed sarcophagi triumphantly.
Man, barrels are pimples on the dermis of God.
Then a bedraggled transvestite paddled out.
He started synchronized swimming with himself and i was perplexed.
Later in the session i felt a strange vestibule descend angrily from the universal imperative.
Crazy!
But after all that it was bombastic to coax silky hangnails from angelic butterflies.
Shiiiit.
Sometimes surfing is puny manifestations of the eternal states of the gyrations of the cosmos.

Holy bicycles, The surf was dark and crappy this morning.
After battling demons all night, it was a good choice not to get in the water.
At one point this blown out wave came in and i kept riding my bike by, glad I was dry.
It was craptastic. Oh my.
Then this other wave came and I took off on it.
A huge section started to throw so i stopped daydreaming.
Man, barrels are missed.
Then a crunk jogger paddled out.
He started flailing and i was in amazement.
Later in the session i felt a strange sensation that I'd been peddaling for too long.
Crazy!
But after all that it was time to ride home.
Shiiiit.
Sometimes surfing is the answer to life's questions, but not today.

Ian Update:

-----------------------

A real life Hunter S. Thompson story. Amsterdam IS what he wrote about in Fear and Loathing. It has to be. This place is insanity in its purest form. It's a non-stop circus/carnival for adults (at least for the ones who like to indulge in guilty pleasures), where "coffee shops" sell every imaginable strain of cannibis sativa, and "smart shops" sell every type of mind-morphing mushrooms. Need to get some window shopping done? Take a stroll down Slew St. and see all the people; men, women, couples, old, young, families, drunks, addicts, and even religious folk gawking at the women on display. This is an amazing, and scary place. Vices are easily obtainable and virtues disposed even easier. BUT.. That's in the red light district. Take a beautiful walk along any of the canals and surprise yourself as you quickly fall in love with the picturesque boat-lines canals and "cozy" houses that are smushed together. The architecture here is amazing, and fashion follows form, or something corny like that. We got to go to the Vincent Van Gough museum, which awesome. they have so many of his works, but NOT starry night or the cafe one. What a hoak (sp?). We're anxious to leave Amsterdam, and head to Prague overnight tonight. We reserved sleeper cochettes for the 12 hour train ride (shoot me). Amsterdam is a very health conscious place (believe it or not) and reminds me of the "hippy vibe" in San Francisco. We've been spoiling ourselves by eating at a game-over vegetarian restaurant. Probably some of the best food I've had on the trip. Well, that's what's going on as of late, and the three of us have been cracking jokes left and right. Also, I picked up a magazine called http://www.believermag.com. Published in S.F. by some people from there. Good reading if you have the time. Scott, I know you'd love it. Adios!

I was finally able to get a picture of the OB car break-in suspect. This is Ghassan Kharsa AKA Littleman who's car was the burgundy (red) Toyota Celica license plate 5jgb323 that was spotted by so many of the break in sites. I hope this helps. I'm trying to find out if he still has the same car. For some reason, I don't think he does.

I know, I know, naming is so bad but I was feeling like a little devil this morning! Well, let me tell you something, I'll stop beating around the busg here, it 'was' so FUN!

Thanks Tranny, that is a post fer sur. Time to start thinks Bio-fuel folks. Berkley sells 100% post consumer recycled Bio-diesel for 380.00 a gallon, better for you engine too. Screw Exxon.

IRVING, Texas - High prices for oil and natural gas propelled Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell PLC to their best quarterly results ever on Thursday, with Exxon becoming the first U.S. company ever to ring up quarterly sales of $100 billion.

To put Exxon’s performance into perspective, its third quarter revenue was greater than the annual gross domestic product of some of the largest oil producing nations, including the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. The world’s largest publicly traded oil company also set a U.S. profit record with net income of almost $10 billion, according to Standard & Poor’s equity market analyst Howard Silverblatt.

Posted by: bagel at October 27, 2005 02:37 PM

I've actually thought about setting up a for profit shop. But it is just a pipe dream at the moment, I'd have to actually try making a gallon first. The guy that makes the fuel I use collects the used vegi oil from all the Mendo fast food joints, then processes it in Hopland. It seems like a waste that most resteraunts pay to get rid of thier used oil.

More Exxon info:

"If Exxon were a country and revenue were its gross domestic product, its $404 billion in annualized GDP would make it the 18th-most-productive country in the world, with a bigger economy than Switzerland, Belgium, Turkey, Indonesia and hundreds of other nations."

E- give us the straight scoop- how often is the Garden State like the pics? 10 days a year? 20?

Posted by: at October 27, 2005 02:59 PM

There are blends of petro and bio, but why buy blends when bio is the same price, there is no advantage to petro fuel. diesel was designed to run on vegi based oils.

Posted by: Mexi at October 27, 2005 03:00 PM

Bio-diesel is part diesel, part biological waste (think vegetable oil mixed in, kinda). Burns cleaner than diesel, and uses less petroleum products per gallon. But it will cost you substantially more than diesel. Bioeiesel can be fabricated without petroleum based oil. But usually isn't.

SVO cars run straight vegetable oil. They need two gas tanks, one for diesel or biodiesel and the other for veggie oil, a heating coil, and a switch. You start on diesel, let the veggie oil warm up, and then switch over. Before shutting down, you switch back. You can literally pick up used McDonald's french fry oil, filter it, and drive all over the country for free, leaving a McDonald's french fry smell thick in your wake. Its really cheap in $$$, but really expensive in your time input. And kinda flaky, not all oils work well, you can get into trouble if it is cold and you forget to switch back to diesel before stopping, etc.

If there is any sort of major movement to biodiesel, the free veggie oil thing will go away and you will pay even more. But the price of regular gas will need to go up a LOT, first, before that will be relevant.

Posted by: Bagel Boss at October 27, 2005 03:08 PM

i've surfed some good jersey waves in my day. It gets good fairly often at the end of summer through fall (better than here so far this season).. i never surfed after christmas as a kid just because it was too gnarly and cold plus i wasn't really that into surfing but supposedly it's pretty consistent in the winter.

However, it's OFTEN super small/crappy/lake-like. We used to just drive to beach without checking any reports or anything (1.5 hour drive) and surf whatever was there. Usually there'd be some small shore-dumpy stuff at least. we got skunked a bunch too.

One thing i really dig about jersey surf is that it almost always breaks on the inner bar. Generally only 20 or so yards from the beach. there isn't really any such thing as 300 duckdives to get out.

the waves break steeply too.. lots of quick, shallow barrels in 1 foot of water.

I also learned to surf by standing on the bottom and then jumping on my board and standing up as the wave passed by.. keep in mind these were SMALL waves. No sitting on the board!! I actually struggled at first at catching waves from a sit-on-the-board position. It's way way different there, especially in the summer. More of a "Let's take the kids to the beach and hang all day, and they can surf the little puny waves and build sand castles."

but.. jersey has it's days.

I'd say SF has 300 surfable days a year.
70 good days
30 banner days

Jersey has 150 surfable days a year
40 good days
15 banner days.

Posted by: e at October 27, 2005 03:11 PM

Petro should be more expensive.

Agian, I use 100% post consumer vegtable oil with 0 petro products, there are no modifications needed for any diesel to run on it.

I know Jersey women. I was a cad.

Jersey is all about style. You wanna score in the summer beach towns? Get the right look. Here's the secret formula.

Get a deep dark tan. Pink skin aint gonna make it. You will most definately need to spend several hours in the gym and don't forget the abs. Very important.

The do has to be just right. Short hair cut real close on the sides and slicked back.

You gotta get a black silk skin tight tank top. Accent it with a pair of knee length linen pleated shorts with a razor sharp crease. A white Gucci belt is a must and it must match your white Gucci slip-ons. Don't even think about wearing socks. AS for the jewelry: A gold rope necklace that hags down kinda low but above the nipple line. Extra points for an Orthodox Crucifx - gold of course. One lions head pinky ring with ruby eyes. One Rolex watch - knock-off preferred.

For conversation - Yo. How you doin. Yo. How you doin. Repeat until she says lets get outta here.

That'll get the girl outta the bar but your not home yet. What's your ride? If it aint a newer Caddy or at least an old Benz with a recent paint job your efforts to this point are wasted.

If she gets in the car but isn't quite ready for the wild thing, take her to a diner and feed her eggs. Repeat every weekend!

A woman was very nervous about her first date with a man she'd been attracted to for a long time. When he came to her door, she started to feel gassy and realized the chili she'd had for lunch had been a bad idea. Being a gentlemen, he carefully put her in the car and shut the door for her, as he walked around to his side, she farted loudly and quickly opened the window and began fanning. She was horrified when he got in and pointed to the back seat saying "Have you met Ruth and Bob?"

e's NJ wave trend analysis is pretty close.

Jersey reprazent, 1983-1996, the formative years. Learned to surf in Cape May and Ocean city, where my parents had houses. Then High School, cutting for sessions with my Margate buddies, and yes Dean Randazzo is a very nice guy with smooth flow. College days spent surfing Manasquan, Sea Girt, Lavalette, Bay Head, Mantoloking. Team Ocean Hut was a bunch of funny dudes. Always got the hotties. Year-round sessions in uncrowded, often empty seas. Bone-chilling winter go-outs. Secret spots. Never fit that classic "joyzey" personality profile, instead came into the world a California kid, a weird displacement of the soul which I remedied 9 years ago. :)

Here I am, missing my old NJ when I see these photos, but NJ surf she is a bitchy mistress -- you can go 7 weeks without even a lick of 2-ft windslop in the summertime. It makes you super-crazy. It's like an orgasm to trunk it in late September during a glassy tropical south swell there, though. I surfed them all, deep into the brutally cold winter, making tracks thru the snow to some isolated jetty in a boarded-up town gone ghostly for the season.

It haunts my grommy reverie....

NJ... I spent a weekend in LBI once a couple of years ago and it was mini golf, high school girls, pizza by the slice, small crappy warm water surf w/ slight onshores. Spent the days on the beach and did 2 or 3 or 4 sessions in one foot waves on a rented longboard with my brother who lives in NYC. Super fun.

Beavertails, icicle hair, fires on the beach, cutting school the dead of winter for a frozen surf. That Mike Segar photo above provokes the most nostalgia for me. New Jersey got good in the winter but the isolation, brutal conditions and lack of leashes or modern day wetsuit technology made it a game for the few with the desire and survival instincts.

My years...Deal, New Jersey '64-'74. Made the permanent move to California 30 years ago. Still have great memories of the guys I learned with. That was a long time ago but seems like yesterday.

Kdalle, wow! Yeah those wetsuits, man, even in the 1980s they were stiff and leaky straightjackets at best. O'NO O'Neill = Oh NO, you're gonna freeze your ballsac off. You *must* remember a few sessions where you come out and can't even turn the key in the door because your fingers and hands turned into frozen, useless meat claws?! And when they thawed out -- your bones would ache so bad... One of those tactile memories you can never forget. :)

e, lots of good surfers out of Pt Pleasant. If anyone remembers TR Devaney, what a great surfer in the 1990s. Dean Schoonover was overrated and a total asshole to everyone, I got into some shit with him once. Then there was Scotty Duerr at Squan, it took me 2 years to work up the pecking order and get respect from him, photog Bruce Chrisner and the longboard guy from the Bait Shop (just to name a few). I was just a kid to those guys, but they were really interesting, quirky, cool people.

Funny. I never knew how many Jerseyites there were here. Just goes to show. It's a great place to be "from". And yes anon, it really works.

I'm sure a lot of people coming to the bloog here think the NJ connection is a huge negative, but it's really neat to reminisce a little bit. I can't deny where I'm from -- the ocean!!!

Posted by: Monkey Milk at October 27, 2005 05:09 PM

Well. nuf reminicin. I'm going surfing.

is it me or do the von bondies sound kind of like hoodoo guru's?

Posted by: bagel at October 27, 2005 05:54 PM

Enough Jersey talk! Our own city beach had a few bars working around 11 am until the south started to blow. Still fun and glassy and crowded!

Posted by: antman at October 27, 2005 06:01 PM

Now I know what a square wave looks like! (that last pic)

Posted by: steve at October 27, 2005 06:19 PM

As far as cold water goes, new hampshire and maine is f'n cold. We are talking 35 degrees 6-5-4 wetsuit. However, its ony surfable a couple days a week. I am much happier here. Water is warm, and there is surf just about everyday. I found it difficult to progress my skills due to lack of waves.

SF is now my home....

I'm back. I just had a long but very easy paddle out. I only had to punch through one mushbeger of a shoulder. Headed straight for a rip and 200 strokes later I was in the lineup. I took out my 9'er. Caught a couple fast outsiders well overhead. The last ride I took got me almost to the sand. 45 minutes and two good rides. I'm happy. I would have stayed out for another but it was getting hard to see. No crowds near me. I was solo. There were a few folks out about 150 yards to the south.

Hey, Exxon didn't set the price of the oil, it was the traders who bought the oil that set the price. It was analysts who overestimated the impact on refining supply who drove the cost of gasoline so high.

I farted in the car in Jersey once. My friends wanted me to roll up the windows to keep it in. Fuck Jersey.

Posted by: at October 28, 2005 12:31 AM

After visiting Lake Placid in July, I drove east towards Providence, RI, and then planned to drive down through all the big cities just to do it. I went through Vermont, New Hampshire into Rhode Island. I drove through Boston and the Big Dig. I went through New York at night. Then I screwed up and ended up on the Jersey Turnpike. Suck those sucking suckables.

RE: OB CAR THIEF INFO: Whoever Johnnie is that posted on 10/27 saying he can vouch for Littleman is full of it. Littleman DON'T surf---he steals and robs from people! PERIOD! His car is now spray painted black with a new license plate of 5PSM617. If you could zoom into his picture, you could tell that he's got a huge scar down the side of his face just like other poster's descriptions of the thief on this website. He is staying somewhere on Darien St. near St. Francis Woods. but parks his black colored toyota celica around the corner on a street called Manor (I believe). Believe you me, this is the guy that bought $800.00 worth of cigarettes from 7-11 back in July 2005 with someone's stolen credit card! Be Alert and watch out for this scumbag!
