holy mackeral

foggy.
Couldn't see it from the dunes.
Might as well go out anyway.
Lots of whitewater.
Bitch-slapped by OB.
3 raging ice-cream headaches and 854 duckdives later Lerm and i made it outside.
Sheesh.
And it's not that good on the outer outer bar where it's breaking.
argh!
But.. not total utter crap either.
Some serious warble comprimised the bit of glassiness that existed.
Some heaving barrels.
Gnarly, scooped-out, angry mother fuckers.
Swift southbound current.
Choppy, miserable deep spots and rips.
About a 2 on a scale from 1 to 10.
If you like it wild, raw, meaty but shitty, uncrowded and spooky, then today's your day!
Lerm got annihilated on one toward the end.
I almost took off into a fire-breathing, sucking death-trap.
Probably should've gone.

this photo deserves to be reposted

Sounds like good times out there today. I definitely admire your fortitude for paddling out and not turning around.

Today's entry should be used on all surf spot descriptions that mention OB.

The beast is back.

Left this morn, couldn't see ANYTHING...drove north a little. Tried to harass top brazzo CB to join me, but he had work in his eyes. Went north, until I saw wood board man's van. Figured he usually knows what's up, parked next to him, paddled out and never saw him.

Ran into an old acquaintance out there. Pretty good surfer, I remember him by his super rapid super short paddle strokes when he chases waves. Found a good spot. Got a few three-lip-smack waves. They were just forming hard on the bar, and then offering up a 4-5 foot vertical section, as if to say, please please have fun right here! Then I drifted a little north in front of super-closeout section, paddled back south but the magic was gone, and headed in.

Ran into kloo in the lot and told him where I was and hoped for the best. He mentioned someone else had a monster southward rip. I experienced none of that at all, in fact, I ended up 2-3 blocks north of where I started.

Some days you're the hammer and some you're the nail...

Posted by: blakestah at October 12, 2005 10:52 AM

I think I saw Bstah rinsing off in the lot as I was heading to work at 9 am. Dat U Bstah? Big incoming tide early today. It's prolly much better now. I feel time squeezed between sunrise and get ready for work time. Can't wait til we set the clocks back. It was pitch black out there at 6 :40 this morning. I got a new board that requires watering. Hopefully today.

Posted by: Dennis at October 12, 2005 10:52 AM

Nevermind Bstah.

HA, HA! Great picture. Nice board.

Rode my bike to the beach this morning. Rode back up Irving (which I do several times a week) and for the first time noticed a surf shop at 46th and Irving...Mollusk Surf Shop. Anybody know how long its been there / who's behind it / what the story is? Looks like its dedicated to the retro trend - lots of longboards and lots of fishes - and looked nice inside. I'll be shocked at my ignorance if the place has been there for more than a month.

Posted by: Q at October 12, 2005 10:59 AM

be shocked

Posted by: at October 12, 2005 11:00 AM

Yeah, I found glassy fun at the same spot. First wave was a lonnnnnng chest-high wall of glass---wheee!---sucking out into a bigger close-out section. A couple bigger but shorter shoulders, some close-outs. Just two other surfers out. In all a fun session very unlike yours, E.

Posted by: kloo at October 12, 2005 11:01 AM

Stah... talked to the Don... wood board man went out for 15 minutes and came back in.

I went South where it was a choice between head high close-outs and smaller, somewhat workable shoulders toward the South. Glassy, and lots of takers. Pretty mellow, though.

Posted by: SFKneelo at October 12, 2005 11:20 AM

Damn...how long? I guess that confirms what big advertisers say about how it takes an average of five or six "viewings" for somebody to notice the ad - I've ridden past that location countless numbers of times and just noticed it today. Crazy. Shocked.

Posted by: Q at October 12, 2005 11:27 AM

Mollusk Surf Shop opened June 25th, about 3.5 months ago. They carry Pavel boards, Bonzers from Moonlight glassing, and some others. Opened by a local.

Posted by: blakestah at October 12, 2005 11:31 AM

Mollusk's opening was also mentioned a few times on this blog.

Posted by: be really shocked at October 12, 2005 11:32 AM

Good one on you E. I woke up at 7 and did my laundry, almost the same feeling I get if I surf before work.

(e-hope this is OK to post- sorry if not appropriate)- Are any surfers out these interested in buying a 36’ ketch? Basically totally taken apart in dry storage but tons of potential. Could be aliveaboard for the young and childless. Capable of going just about anywhere that waves break with the exception of very high latitude stuff. I would love to sell this boat to some surfer who wants to put it together and take off. Will talk about putting together a screaming deal to the right person, this girl needs a new captain. This is a project, and will require work. Will consider providing extensive guidance. If you have dreamed of living on a sailboat and cruising some day, fire me an email. freesrf@yahoo. We’ll talk.

what it I think is most interesting is all the dialogue that was generated yesterday because of an image posted by ethan. It's crazy how one act can spawn so many new discoveries. Thanks for all of those websites, I'm going to check them out.

And to the person who called my stencil high school binder doodle, you are totally right. It is high school cut and paste and of poor quality (a June afternoon is stupid time to do a large stencil at ob). But in no way do I consider myself an artist; I am a trained landscape architect. And I struggled in my drawing courses. If it weren’t for the computer I would never have found employment when I graduated. But that’s for a different conversation. The stencil wasn’t about making an artistic statement; it was about the process of decision making and inner conflict. It was about expressing how I felt about this current benchmark in my life. It wasn’t for the art world and it wasn’t for that homeless guy that’s endlessly flying his kites down there; it was purely for me (so then is it art?). Not so that I could say, “hey dude look, that’s my shit” but to say thanks for a great fucking time SF, I loved it here (and also so that I could cover up some of that dude’s shit).

I hope you are not that guy in the line up that’s to pissed off to even acknowledge that sick barrel I just got right in front of you. And for the stand up and turn guy, I do have to be honest, my tea bag is completely coarse from the last few years of wave riding, and I can only hope it’s been as nice to you.

Banksy and Fairy are both idols. Even more for their ideology than their work.

To Ethan, you are the man.

To the rest of you, go surf. And yes, Dutch women are definitely hot; actually they’re super hot.I'm checking one out right now. But do you know any? Dank U.

I got all excited last night because Bill Martin said "offshore flow." Drove to three spots somewhat south of OB this morning and one of them was fogged in and the other two looked like crap, so I decided to keep my wetsuit dry. Hopefully this weekend will be better.

She can wax my stick anytime...dreamy.

Note about yesterday at Pathetica, started at the pumphouse 9am went north, overhead meaty walls of doom, actually a couple of good lefts near the tree, but very short rides on the whole, after an hour headed to taco bell, some decent rights, got bored and headed down to the second pump area just north of boat docks, caught some really fun shoulder high open rights, fun!! A 6.5 on the 1 - 10 scale, nothing epic, but recharged the soul.

Exited water at Noon to get to work before anyone noticed...

Posted by: onthebus at October 12, 2005 01:01 PM

That shot of the guy flying through the air at the wedge makes me queasy...water looks like it's a foot deep. If I wanted a sport where I could smack my head on rocks, I'd snowboard or skate. Deep water and sandy bottoms are good things.

Home for lunch, surf check.

Too foggy to bother.

Used my time at home forwarding some lyrics to work via email.

Tonight is first rehearsal for Halloween gig.

Should be a blast as always.

Oh, and surf will be fun tomorrow when I am sleep deprived and hungover.

Enjoy.

Late morning w/ a better tide offered glassy super foggy conditions but still lots of current and rips. The rips that follow you around as you try to paddle away from them. Always interesting to surf for a couple of hours and have no idea where you'll get out... turned out to be only a few blocks south. Still a total white-out at the beach right now. A lot of work for less reward today... definitely not great but no wind is always better than average IMHO.
