E's Still Gone

Waves still suck.

SF Bouy showing no south:

HMB Bouy showing a little:

Monterey Bouy is the best bet:

Hurricane Irene:

Grabbed a little sizzle session this morning, waves ended up far better than I had anticipated, and I had a blast....for August and the past few weeks anyhow...

I went out after work last night and had fun for about 1.5 hours til the current and tide chewed the waves to pieces.

That picture reminds me of the movie where this guy looked at really big fat ladies and saw supermodels.

J: Are you saying you're never going to eat any animal
again? What about bacon?
New Girl: No.
J: Ham?
New Girl: No!
J: Pork chops?
New Girl: J, those all come from the same animal!
J: Heh heh heh... ooh... yeah... right, honey.
A wonderful... magical animal.

Just had my last sesh here on the rich Coast, over head but a little lumpy, not perfect, but fun. I'm buying a big bottle of Johnny Walker and sharing it with Antonio, an old Tico who runs the soda next to my house. Antonio and his family lived in this area before there were roads to the town. He laid into me the other day big time, "why do you have to travel so much and get in everybodies business, the problems you American cause by traveling everywhere, Blah Blah Blah" I explained to him that aside from the US military most Americans don't travel that much, but something inside me knows he's right. Next year I'll spend the summer in Alaska fishing and surfing in the good Ol' USA.
I walked through the jungle with my skinny new little dog and he was successful in chasing away all the animals I was there to take photos of. I'm ready to come home, I just hope the indian summer is not too far off.

Dropping the girlfriend off at the aiport tonight...I shall have both a car and a residence in the city tonight. Tomorrow I'm not just a weekend warrior, but a legitimate dp'er. What a hobby surfing is....guys who collect stamps don't have to wake up 5 AM, scramble down to the coast, rely on global and local weather patters holding up, swim in cold polluted water, avoid flesh-eating bacteria, stink-eyed locals, and car break-ins...and a couple years down the road you get some nice surfer's ear to go with your melonoma. Hell, I bet stamp collectors even get high if they lick enough stamps. How late is the post office open tonight?

Posted by: Andrew in Alameda at August 17, 2005 11:58 AM

sounds like the crappy surf might be shaping up down there. can't say the same for the north. shitty, shitty onshores continue.

after the other day's hendrix riff, i'm sending on a live music rec for those in santa cruz: C.R. Avery is playing Don Quixote's tonight. CHECK THIS MAN OUT. f'ing unreal. beatbox spoken word madman, with amps and rock band. po'girl is playing with them; they're like femme folk blues? ok, trying to summarize muscial styles sort of sucks...

anyway: he did this incredible rap about hendrix trying to listen to a dylan record in harlem the other night...check it....cover will be next to nothing.

Posted by: simpsons fan at August 17, 2005 12:34 PM

Dennis, no I've been ragged on a lot for traveling, but Antonio has been a good friend and it hit hard. I'm actually thinking of writing a story about the family, but he'd probably hate that.

Posted by: Mexi at August 17, 2005 12:36 PM

Mexi what problems do americans cause by traveling? Someone else could take that question as Mexi's probably halfway finished with that whiskey chilling on a porch in costa rica somewhere.

Ian's Blog

Traveling is awesome, but travelling as an American sometimes carries a stigma. That doesn't mean you should automatically sew on a Canadian Flag to your pack. Just tread lightly, learn a few words of the local lingo, and help change that stereotype with respect.

There are 2 types of US haters

#1 Those whom hate the US gov. actions abroad (most foriegners). The US traveller reminds them of that but usually they are really cool towards individuals from the States. Probably best not to talk politics abroad.

#2 Those who have had experiences w/ travelling Americans that have been a bad example. Many American tourists assume everyone speaks English and don't take the effort to even learn a simple thank you, please etc. Also many Americans are loud, party hard, disrepect local customs and dress or show wealth well beyond local means. Your ipod = a years pay in some parts

Posted by: artifact at August 17, 2005 01:18 PM

Bonzers is shure is wacky! WTF? SoCal go craaaaazy fer um. They work? Or just look purdy?

Posted by: Burnt Reynolds at August 17, 2005 01:35 PM

I don't know if they work or not but I'll be happy to provide feedback when mine arrives......

Posted by: Kaiser at August 17, 2005 01:37 PM

Yes bonzers work. Its a little different feel...they draw out turns more, and faster, but not as good on short radius turns as a board with rail fins. I think of bonzers as an augmented single design.

Any board can be made purdy with a resin tint and gloss...Strive does work in Santa Cruz similar to the work Moonlight does in the Santa Barbara area. Strive does the high end glassing for Manny Caro of Mandala Custom Shapes.

the bing tri fin bonzer (long rail fins, 7" middle) i rode for several sessions definately had more squirt in and out of turns. much better on the flatter parts of a wave than a single fin.

but i lusted for the trusty thrusty thrust of my thruster.

"A Whore is a Soul Surfer who sold their soul by accepting money, drugs, sex, etc in compensation for their Art" - Yeap, that fits too. If you call that shit you do "art".

See you out in the water when it is DOH+ on one of my QuiverBaiter boards! Oh, no I won't, you will be a "sheltered" break waiting for the tide to push.

another question to pose to you cats. i could take a short week off from portugal to head to the canary islands this week, windguru is reading 1.5 m from the north but moderate north winds on lanzarote. surf has been pretty good in iberia and looks to stay that way. think it's worth it?

People who ask for board buying advice from strangers on this blog are idiots. Talk to a shaper, not some yokel with a mouse. Don't e-mail the shaper or look at their website. Have a conversation.

Can someone please post some Reef chicks and show me the true power of the information superhighway!

Posted by: C is for Closeout at August 17, 2005 04:17 PM

Posted by: at August 17, 2005 04:30 PM

Actually I've seen a lot of Canadian Flags travelling in Central America- all belonged to Americans. I've never seen a Canadian w/ a Canadian Flag.

And ironically the only people wearing cheezy USA tshirts are the locals

So the flag just identifies you as a target anyways. It better just to maintain a low profile from where ever you may be.

My point is our govenment may have some serious issues, but we are fortunate to live where we do. But I would never hide the fact that I'm a gringo(that would be hard), I just don't advertise it.

Ok Kaiser let see your quiver of Central American hotties!

Posted by: artifact at August 17, 2005 04:31 PM

C, an alternate perspective on the quiver issue is that this is one of the best places around to talk to guys who surf the area about what boards work best around here. talking to a shaper is good too, talking to multiple shapers is better, but other surfers can give valuable insight.

good little beach break peaks to the far south of SF this AM. I guess its deep water bathymetry works well for small south der. Check out google earth and you can see the deep water swell highways. I think these work well for us lucky Westies. Nice mile deep less than a mile offshore not 100s of miles like East Coast.I used to be an Eastie but not any more . Nowhere on the East Coast is as consistent as Central- Northern California.

[Half Moon Bay] My wife tells me there is a dead whale down near the parking lot on Poplar Street stinking up the beach. She didn't know what type of whale. From her description it sounds like a gray whale. No men in white suits around, but I'm sure they smell the cookin'.

For my commute, I drive home along highway 1 from the city down to Half Moon Bay around 2-3pm on the weekdays. Over the past 3 weeks, I can't believe the number of people out at *****ra. The strange thing is, on most days it isn't remotely surfable. OK, if you had a 9 foot log you may be able to ride some mush, but on most days it has been flat crap. Today was the worst, I counted over 25 people in the water. The funny thing is, they are practicaly on top of one another, not spread out at all.

At first, I thought this was just the Pacifica crowd getting "brave". And maybe to some degree it is, but over the last year I've noticed the crowds getting bigger down here. I can live with crowds as I realize it is part of life. However, I saw something that I thought was almost blasphemous. I saw a dude with about 6 foam longboards taking newbies out at a place I can guarantee you that most people never have heard of. I couldn't believe it. First of all, it is a wave that newbies can't handle (it is a left) as it is quite peaky and breaks quickly. The break can't handle any sort of crowd. Secondly, another spot down here that rarely gets more than 5 people recently had 30 people on it this weekend. This place isn't easy to find.

I don't fault any of the people for surfing, hell, I'm out there contributing to the crowds. It is the selfish part of me that wishes I didn't see them. However, I do believe that it is the responsibility of a surfer that is teaching others to take those surfers to a break like Linda Mar or the Jetty (south part) when and where the conditions are appropriate. Granting someone an immediate hall pass to a semi-secret spot who hasn't or can barely stand up isn't the right thing to do in my opinion.

Just my two cents.

In a city of 3/4 of a million people, I was the only dp'er. Onshore wind at 10-15 kts, mushy crumbly waves, biting cold air. Fuck it, I got a hoody. Had to do the one arm paddle thing on account of old-man type injury to right pec. I spent some time body surfing with a harbor seal. Those suckers are cute. Waves not nearly as awful as they looked, though if I had the oppotunity to go another day, I would have probably not gone today...hardest part was chaning into the wetsuit, but hitting the water seems to make it better. Showering at the Sliz-lot and breakfast at George's Zoo, sitting at my desk with in a damp Speedo under my clothes. Not a bad day at all.

Also, driving an hour to work is a level of hell of that Dante missed. Learn to merge people: it's like a zipper.

It's true, except instead of cute 20-something women gossping in tight shirts, it's near-sighted 60-something engineers gossiping in receeding hairlines, and, sadly, also tight shirts. I swear that button holing in the gut has to be threaded with Kevlar.
