E's away, post away.....

Here is what I know:

- E's on vacation
- The swell is still small
- This summer still sucks
- Order your board for winter now
- Football season is here
- There is something on the radar.....

Sitting through the flat spell I started thinking about small wave boards. Yeah, a long board is great in small waves, but I've done enough of that and I'd like something different. I saw some guys at Malibu a few years back on real wide, flat fishes. They were able to take-off way deeper than the longboards and speed through the sections and take any wave they wanted. They weren't doing wrap-around cutbacks but they were comming off the top pretty well. So, a wide flat fish would make a good small wave board for down the line speed and manuverability.

What about one of these small single fin eggs, like 6' and less? Seems like you could turn them well, but not really work over a wave. Maybe fun to mess with but I can't imagine them being more fun than a fish. Although, the single fin has better strait line speed than a tri-fin. Maybe a fish with paralel fins could out run a single fin in smaller waves?

How about a wide tail bonzer set-up? I've found longboard bonzers to be so-so until they're in head high, hollow surf. Maybe the bonzer would be fun enough on small waves but pickup if the rare set wave came through.

What do people here do for a small wave board?

I ride a 6'6'' egg or a 6'5'' modern fish design but with a tri-fin setup. Wide point moved forward, flatter rocker.

Posted by: Kaiser at August 16, 2005 12:21 PM

small waves.

anything under head high.

6'6" twin-fin wide tailed fish, if they're of the gutless variety. modest entry rocker. flat through the rails and flat out the back. thick: lots of foam.

6'0" single-bump swallow tail thruster if there's any speed or face to work with. flat entry rocker, single-vee mid-rail and out the back. potato-chippy: not a lot of foam.

I thought about getting a longboard for small waves but to me it doesn't make sense to spend that much money on waves that don't have the fun potentiality. I have a 6'8 Flyer that works good in mushy waves up to a little overhead. I wish I had bought a 6'2 instead cuz with me weighing 168 lbs, it's too floaty in waves that jack up, and it's just too bulky for me to manuever in small stuff, though it does get through flat and weak sections ok. Also, the 6'8 Flyer is harder to duck dive than my 7'6 semi. It's really got a lot of foam. The board works best for me in mushy chest-high to slightly overhead waves It's probably a better suited size board for someone used to longboarding small waves or weighing more than 200 lbs.

i bought a longboard this weekend..look out bvb!

thanks kaiser, for saving me from being to productive today.

Posted by: bagel at August 16, 2005 12:47 PM

I love my semi-flat rockered 5'11" tri-fin in all sorts of waves. I also have a 5'6" fish that flies down the line in small waves and is fun. Although i haven't found the sweet spot in the board yet but maybe there is none b/c i made it myself or i haven't perfected the fishin' yet. Either way, get something flat and short and you'll be stoked.

6'6" fish! Why? That seems waay too big for what a fish is all about.

Do any of y'all know anything about this guy or other doctors who specialize in Surfer's Ear? At my 75-80% level I'm biting the bullet and trying to deal soon, probably miss most of Fall. Farq!

Any suggestions would be MOST appreciated... thanks!

Hi all - Seeking a little free advice here. Can anyone suggest the best and most inexpensive airlines for Mexico. I'm taking the family to Mexico near Salulita/Punta Mita in November. So I guess flying into Puerto Vallarta then renting a car from there. Thanks in advance.

Alaska Air

Posted by: at August 16, 2005 01:55 PM

My "short" board is 7'0". It's one of those semi-gun/big guy short boards (I'm not a big guy...144 lbs), but it works well in all but the summer-est conditions. As I am without a car, my longboard has been relegated to paddling around Alameda and the 7'0" (which fits in the girlfriend's car) is the utility board. On a super-puny day, I simply enjoy the simple pleasures of swimming and paddling.

Ditto - Alaska Air
Also use priceline for the car rental and buy the insurance before you go. Your Gold/Platinum Mastercard will not cover liability rental car insurance in Mexico.

Anyone ever stayed at the Red, White and Blue campsite on the coast? Is it a full-on nudist camp or is there some amount of normalcy? Just wonderin'.

Posted by: questionasker at August 16, 2005 02:01 PM

the surf was so empty on sundays when the 49r's where dominating. damn i miss those days. Go 9rs.

fish over 6!?!? save the $500, buy a door mount some fins, rip, shred, tear and lacerate.

dennis, thinking of parting w/ that flyer?

my take:
longboards - fun
shortboards - fun
fish - fun
etc. etc. etc. they're all fun.

fooootball, i'm with johnny, can't f'in wait! hopefully my dawgs can at least double last years wins....

Posted by: bagel at August 16, 2005 03:05 PM

Sorry Limevoodoo, But I've been a Villian since I was a kid. I used to watched the edited games announced by Mario Machado (he also did Soccer made in Germany).

I don't expect them to beat Chelski, or Arsenal but I am hoping they can get back into European play. They've got to be able to do better than Everton has, eh?

Posted by: friend #1 at August 16, 2005 03:12 PM

J - I also agree that all boards are fun. If I had the budget, I'd buy a longboard, a fish, and a shortboard for small stuff. I have a 9'er designed for OH waves.

Q:What's the surfability difference between a single fin egg and a fish? Been borrowing an egg for this bumpy, tiny stuff.

Dennis you can borrow my LB aka Flying Brick [ 8'0 Stewart ] any time. Great board, but since it weighs, like, 3000 lbs I don't take it out every day.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at August 16, 2005 03:39 PM

Yeah, it looks like Everton are headed for the UEFA Cup now. They shoulda just given their place to L'pool and avoided all that fuss.......

Me -- Chelsea fan since 1970. They won the FA Cup that year, and at the tender age of seven I decided that I'd pledge my heart to a team that were winners. Naturally, it took them until 1997 to win anything again......... But last season rocked.........

Posted by: limevoodoo at August 16, 2005 03:39 PM

I can't comment on eggs but I got a twin fin fish, super thick, pretty wide, like 21 inches and no rocker, 5'10" and it's a lot of fun in the small mushy stuff. It gets into waves early, its fast and it turns better than I expected. Still getting used to it but its super fun to ride. I 'm sure I am realizing about 10% of its potential given that I am a barney who can't really surf.

Posted by: eric at August 16, 2005 03:48 PM

Marco, you don't really want to shop for a surfer's ear surgeon on the web. Email me if you want a decent surgeon. Among ENT surgeons, the least skilled specialize in surfer's ear.

Posted by: blakestah at August 16, 2005 03:49 PM

Yeah, all it takes is a Foreign Billionaire to turn things around. You'd think Man U fans would welcome Glazer.

Morinho is such a wanker though, you have to admit. But so is Sir Alex, and Arsene Wenger for that matter.

I don't think I started following Villa until the late 70's.

Posted by: friend #1 at August 16, 2005 03:54 PM

Well, actually it was Gullit and Vialli who turned it around in '97. But the billionaire certainly bought the title last season.

The problem with the ManU fans is that they're totally xenophobic. They can't stand the idea of an American owning their club. If they really wanted to protect "their" team from the possibility of foreign ownership they should have bought up enought shares when it was on the open market..... Tought nuts to 'em I say.

Posted by: limevoodoo at August 16, 2005 04:01 PM

You guys should move to Cornwall or something. You can surf and talk SOCCER all day long.

Isn't any wonder that kids here (myself included) stop playing SOCCER at a certain age? I mean, since when do you see some surfer busting down the wave face at Pleasure Point or the like, get clipped by a rogue piece of kelp around the ankle, go down and grap their ankle like holy hell just let lose on it......

My thoughts exactly.

So why do they do it in SOCCER? I don't understand.

Posted by: Kaiser at August 16, 2005 04:04 PM

Hi - I'm moving out to SF from Kentucky and I have to learn to surf the ocean beach. It looks really awesome. Will be living in Nob Hill. Can I walk to the beach from there? Can't wait to learn to "trip" those waves. Are all you regular posters on here the real locals or is there a whole other scene I need to scope out? I'm just lost but will be getting "wet" soon.

Posted by: Total Newbie With Balls at August 16, 2005 04:08 PM

villa, manchester,.......... what i want to know is alonso going to win the drivers championship or is raikonen going to catch him? the new circuit in turkey looks interesting, any thoughts on who's going to win this sunday?

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at August 16, 2005 04:18 PM

Falling over in soccer: well, they do it for 2 reasons -- coz it hurts and coz they may get some advantage by the ref penalizing the other side.

Btw, I'm from somewhere pretty near Cornwall and I ain't going back.........

Posted by: limevoodoo at August 16, 2005 04:20 PM

hmmm...we've got football, the other football, and formula one. so i'll either need another 20 guys to play with or a few million dollars to get my car. i prefer my sports a little more accessible.

so is federer good enough to hold his #1 ranking, or should he expect trouble from pirate pants??

Posted by: rza at August 16, 2005 04:34 PM

Soccer comes from the name Association Football which was applied to the Game way back when.

The yanks took part of the Association but none of the football.

American football should just be called "Pads", since that is the reason why they don't just grab their ankles and yell like holy hell after a tackle in that game.

And as for Man U fans:

FUCK MAN U

Regardless of who own 'em.

Ha! Never hear of anyone from KY out here, so
I'll have to extend any help possible to you.

I'm also from KY, but have lived here for 10 years. Still, I'll never be local. Drop me a line at gbsapinus at yahoo and I'll be happy to help you through your first OB poundings.

Start holding your breath now, and maybe you'll be ready. (Doubt it!)

Surfed mid-morning. Kinda sucked (it and me).

Love my 6'2"x19.5" single-bump, swallow-tail, wide-nose, little rocker, 2.5" thruster (I'm 160lbs). Haven't found the waves too lame for it, and it goes a little overhead alright too, unless it's speed-bumpy. Way more fun than the longboard and eggy funboard I used on small waves before.

9'8" single fin small wave board
8'6" everything else board

saw a gorgeous 6'6" liddle at mollusk that would be great for small waves and above. wide and thick at the bottom. killer fins. small waves can be just as fun.

Wow - BVB trolling as a newbie from Kentucky...

What will they think of next...

Here's a clue. Short skinny mo-fos with big mouths on big red boards get no respect.

Posted by: at August 16, 2005 06:30 PM

Word yall, posting from Peru! Here's a tip that'll make your board feel like a completely different board. Yank out your middle fin (if they're removable) and ride it as a twinzer. Watch your style be morphed instantly as you have to learn to ride a completely new set-up. Worked really well on my 6'2 and changed my mind about putting my fist through the deck out of frustration from my board 'not turning well'. Anyway, I updated my page if anyone is curious. I'm trying to not pimp spots, so don't yell at me. Thanks for the good times in Costa Rica Mexi. Had a blast man!

Posted by: Ian at August 16, 2005 06:46 PM

BVB's from Los Angeles. He'd be a hypocrite if he talked shit about transplants.

I outsurf BVB 10-fold. Even if I've only surfed 3-4 times the last 6 months.
