Summertime...

... and the surfing's easy.
Come winter I'll be pining for mornings like this.
Small, inconsequential, fun.
Empty, glassy-ish, dry-hair paddle out.
Squirty little shoulder-high A-frames.
Gutless.
Seek out the power pockets and wedge yourself in there.
No hassles.
No skull-crunching lips of lead.
Easy breezy surfing.
With just a tad more girth the waves this morning would've been dynamite.
Good for a log or a chunky fish.

Grey and chilly at the beach.
Pods of dolphins swimming by.

Slates, AI, Parko, Timmy Reyes, Fred P, Macca, Raoni, Knox, Luke Egan all advance at JBay. Fanning, Trent Munro, Cory Lopez, Damian Hobgood, Occy, Taj all go down.

Two pleasant things occurred on the way to work this morning. I saw SS & company heading to the beach for a surf, and listened to non-stop Carlos Santana on 98.1. Happy B-day Carlos.

Now we all know summertime ain't gonna flow with no doe and no broad and bodega sto's with no no'.
The waves overflow fa sho.
So hop on top the longboard and roll and don't go home till they all gone hooknose.
Ya know...straight bodyboard struggling to get a shore.
Watch them girls ride.
Let em whip ocean ripples.
When it hits, the tide has got a chicken soaked.
Regardless the sharpness of these broads sorta
like moses.
They easily pull it apart kid.
Them some sweet ladies.
Keep letting em kill it.
Like some true dank
No way you can't feel it.
They comin up skimpy with the coverup.
I got a long joint for ya.

That was terrible.

Sunny, glassy, smally, surfy this morning. Felt good. Water is still nasty down here though. Hate sneezy and weezin' the rest of the day.

I need some J-Bay waves bad.

That relaxing beach picture reminded me of Maui. But there is a tree that lines many of the beaches in Maui that offers some shade, just enough to be comfortable but not blocking out the sun. The problem is that this tree has 1" long thorns from hell that drop onto the beach attached to small branches. I stepped on one that did minimum damage luckily. Another stuck in my sandle and pierced through 3/4" of rubber, stopped by the leather just under my foot. My wife got one wrapped around her ankle. Is there always a relationship between beauty and pain?

I was the "company" Dennis saw on the GHW. E's description is right on the money. A couple of really fun walls in the mix if you found the right place, but mainly scads of random little rides. A bunch of surfers by the end, all at one spot (a consensus not matched by any distinction of the spot).

I first want to thank everyone for all the meetings, the many hours, and
the thousands and thousands of letters that you sent to encourage Assembly
Speaker Fabian Nunez to consider a fair and open public process for
appointments to the California Coastal Commission.

It is, however, with great disappointment that I inform you that on
Thursday, Speaker Nunez declined our invitation and instead simply
reappointed Monterey County Supervisor Dave Potter. Mr. Potter, as you
know, enjoys a very poor conservation voting record on the Commission and
consistently exhibits a very aggressive pro-development perspective. Mr.
Potter's 7-year tenure on the Commission will now be extended to 11 years
and our coastal development woes will likely continue to worsen.

This will obviously create a very difficult situation regarding all
coastal development, and in particular the proposal by the Pebble Beach
Company to chop down 17,000 native Monterey Pine trees for yet another
golf course in Monterey. As you know, Mr. Potter has already endorsed
this project and has publicly encouraged people to ignore (and allow the
Commission to overturn) coastal staff's many years of analysis and
recommendations that the project is patently inconsistent with the Coastal
Act.

The Coastal Commission appointments are the most important appointments an
Assembly Speaker will ever make, and they will determine the Speaker's
coastal legacy. While we will continue to urge Speaker Nunez to embrace
coastal protection, he will inevitably be judged by Dave Potter’s
destructive voting record.

On the bright side, this was not the only Coastal Commission appointment
made in the last few weeks. Great Coastal Places is very proud of Senate
President Pro Tem Don Perata! He not only reappointed coastal champion
Mary Shallenberger, but Senator Perata also responded to environmentalists
and decided against reappointing Orange County Coastal Commissioner Toni
Iseman. In her place Senator Perata has appointed Manhattan Beach City
Council Member Jim Aldinger.

Lastly, Chula Vista Mayor Steve Padilla has been appointed to replace
outgoing Commissioner Scott Peters, who resigned after three years on the
job. We have high hopes and are determined to work closely with both Mr.
Aldinger and Mr. Padilla over the next four years to assist them in
standing up to special interests and development pressures and protect our
coast.

All in all, the Coastal Commission is in far better shape than it was just
a few months ago. While it is disappointing that Speaker Nunez chose to
ignore the unprecedented outpouring of support for coastal protection, at
the end of the day, Great Coastal Places was able to highlight coastal
protection in three of four of the Commission appointments at stake.
Scott Peters and Toni Iseman are no longer on the Commission and Mary
Shallenberger is here to stay. And you, the dedicated activists with
Great Coastal Places, played a large role in making that happen.

Until next time

Director, Sierra Club Coastal Programs

So i'm walking around SF in the Mission District on Sat. night. I'm with this girl, and we're heading over to the Skylark bar. This young guy walks over to us and starts talking in a Southern accent in a real dramatic, over the top way. He tells us this story about him being stranded out in SF because his dad is in the hospital for an emergency, how no one will talk to him or give him the time of day, and how he needs to get back to the Richmond to the house they are staying at. He says he's from the University of Alabama, and he's a good person, and I already know what he's looking for: money. He becomes really apologetic, and says how he will mail us cards for the next forty years thanking us for helping him out. I start questioning him, and the dude looks like he's about to cry, or i'm just real guillable. Anyhow, he needs 6 bucks to take the BART all the way up there. I give it to him and say, "Here's my email address, email me when you're okay." I then tell him, "if you are FUCKING with people, and taking advantage of their generosity, remember that KARMA'S a BITCH, and what goes around will come around."

I hate the Aloha Spirit sometimes. Sometimes, I hate being from these Islands that taught me to be giving. I should have told him to fuck off, but karma's a bitch, right? Man, this fucker better come through.

MSG - you have two chances of getting your money back. None and noner. I've heard that same line so many times. I don't give anything to anybody for any "reason" anymore when approached on the street. That $6 will go to buy drugs which support terrorism. Well maybe not that dramatic...

3to5 - I believe it. Probably the Calvins. I think they had sex through a hole in the wall or something like that.

Posted by: Dennis at July 20, 2005 11:48 AM

Posted by: slim at July 20, 2005 11:48 AM

He won't come through. He's still on the BART platform looking for the line that goes to the Richmond.

MSG - Don't sweat it. Sometimes the only way to have no regrets, is to have no expectations. Even if Opie was jivin', regardless of what your inner-tough-guy tells you, performing an act of kindness does not make you a chump.
Right now the wheel is spining in your favor.
