surfboarding is fun

Morning sun after late-night showers.
Nare a soul seeking waves.
Frumpy chest-high thumpers.
Some glassiness.
Smelly, filthy water.
Pretty shitty.
Steep, pitchy drops.
Surfing as relaxation.
Surfing as an escape.
Surfing for pleasure.
Just surfing.

Thanks to all the good-vibers out there.

Beach art is great. I sat on the wall a couple years ago and watched that guy work. It amazes me that he would spend so much time to create just to see the tide wash it away in a few hours. The pics are excellent. I like the second shot most. The person appears to be soul searching.

BTW, I had the pleasure of meeting Lerm last night at N*riega Teriyak*. I remember seeing your face before Lerm. Last time I was there I ran into Judith. Hmmm. Surfers secret dining spot?

Posted by: Dennis at March 24, 2005 10:42 AM

I watched him make that one whilst checking the surf.
That guy that balances rocks by the ocean is pretty cool too.

Wish I had more time to play with sand and rocks now that I think about it.

Thanks for the link bagel. Nice stuff. I especially like this one for both the intended artist and the presence of....JORMA and JACK! My heros still going strong in their 60's. Keep your lamps trimmed and burning.

Question for the ultra informed art heads out there: I'm involved in putting a show together with art relating to the San Mateo natural environment. Could be old or new school. Illustration, photography, 3D, sound, written word, whatever. Any suggestions of artist with pieces that might be appropriate is appreciated.

Oh yeah, fun little session this morning at the south end. Glassy, tiny, fun.

The other day while flipping the channels I came across a show that blew me a way. Surf and Snakes - Planet Channel. The crocodile hunter Steve Irwin in Bali doing the dawnie then catching snakes?!? One scene had me practically falling out of my ass groove - was when our surfing hero was in the line up and dove off his board - I thought maybe he saw a shark and was gunna wrestle it like a croc, but he dove down and came back up with a 4ft sea snake! Irwin was charging 10 faces with no problems! Ugh! What's next Offshores with Oprah?!!!?

Anyone know how that head makes those beach designs? So f'ing cool .

I remember seeing the Tibetan monks on that Free Tibet concert showing how they make these elaborate, day-or-longer, designs out of colored sand and then just destroy it after. People asked why, isn't that a waste of time? Monks said something to the effect of it is not the end result but the mindset you have during the journey. So true on so many levels, surfing, music, life, learning. Niiiiiiceness!

E,
It's a good informational text, but as for chilling by the fire and reading, a bit long. It basically breaks down all the myths in American history and is geared towards public school educators like myself. I have it still and use it for reference.

e, my friend is reading that right now. He said it's really good, but obviously it's a history book, super-duper detailed. But, on a provocative note, he said it gives great opposite stories, the ones you never hear. He said he also now hates everyone spoken about in the book now. Haha, sounds good though, you should give it a spin.

Zinn's book seems to be very good, although I only started it a few days ago. Most history is written by the ruling classes. This book also tries to present the view of those being ruled, the oppressed class. The first chapter on Columbus and the "Indians" really sets the tone. It is easier ready than a text book, but not as easy as a novel. He strikes a balance.

Smithie, shulie, ron and the boys dominated the coast from cabo blanco to tamarindo for the past two weeks. Boosting huge airs and generally turning heads. Saw ron get into it with some local hippy out in the lineup, but after he beat him down, respect was given. Our complete domination of the lineup and at night in the bars was apparent to everyone who was fortunate enough to have witnessed it. I feel blessed just to have been around those guys; my surfing, fighting and chick-scoring abilities are almost 100% better now! The brigade is buying land near Samara, time for full-time domination. The Brigade pulled into town and the 'chixs' started drooling. We took over Mavs and kicked jeff clark in the a$$! Ocen Beach fell to our mighty swagger and Richie, Raji, and LeRoy were boosting sick wheelies in the parking lot! Triple overhead laughers because the Brigade was knockin' back coldies and feelin' No Pain! The Brigade took it's act to The Castro next. Ralphie was pumped up and got the crowd going at The White Swallow. Hot night in leather chaps! The Brigade left Christo to the crazed back-room-oil-boys and next took over The Stud! Downing bud lights like there was now tomorrow OR yesterday! Richie accidently barfed on Dickie Freebuns and it became a free for all for every man, he-male, she-male, tranny, and rug muncher in the house! So Beware!!!! The Brigade may come and dominate YOUR local spots soon!! (if we can ever sit down again.)

Standard dirthead hippy response, I bet you were one of the guys getting burned in the water and on the land by the Brigade. We only respect those who show the Brigade that they deserve it. Making bead necklaces and selling weed does not gain the respect of the Brigade. Carving huge turns, boosting huge airs and pulling into sick pits does. Try stepping to smithie or ron with your limp "look in the mirror" fulfillment crap, and you will be peeling lip-skin from your jaw. When the Brigade shows up, go hide in the bushes and practice yoga or something instead of trying to surf. At least with diligent yoga practice, you may be able to self-fellate yourself. Talk about fulfilling!

The Brigade Owns Bo-Bo Too!

The brigade owns Bo-Bo from the 'river' to the point, ya. Ron and smithie can be seen all year bustin huge airs, throwing down sick snaps, and getting pitted like no other. Basically, the Brigade turns heads. In '99 'Kev-Dog' Ancel snaked schulie at The Peak and schulie dealt wit that punk Brigade Style, broke him up pretty bad, sent him to the ER room, ya. If you think you can pull that kind of puca shell crap with the brigade, think again barny. The Brigade will deal out an A-town style pounding on you if you keep your little pretty boy SF mouth running. Just ask the boys down in silverstrand what we do with locals that step to our domination. You think we are scared of some metrosexuals from SF? Better you listen to your favorite drum-boy-band in your Hippy VW Happy Bus while the brigade does the surfing, better for everyone for sure. ya.

John McLaughlin on Jimi Hendrix:

I first met Jimi in New York, through Mitch Mitchell, who had been with Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames. I used to play with Georgie years and years ago, but at that time I was with Tony Williams' Lifetime. Mitch was just really nutty about Lifetime. He came over and said, "You better come down to the Record Plant because we're recording tonight; just come on
down."

When I got there, Mitch wasn't actually there at all. There was a guy called Buddy Miles playing drums. I didn't know Buddy at the time; I just saw this guy who was playing some boogaloo. So I played, and then Jimi came and joined in. Dave Holland [Miles Davis' bassist] was there, and we played all night -- it was really nice.

Jimi used Marshall amps and would vary between a white custom Gibson Les Paul and a Fender Stratocaster. I was using a flat-top Gibson with a pickup on it. We worked some chords out but nothing complicated. We were just jamming.

How familiar he was with me, I have no idea. Because Mitch was really crazy about what Lifetime was doing, I imagine that Jimi was aware of us. Generally, Jimi was just a blues guitarist. I was into a completely different thing than he, though there was no conflict between our styles whatsoever. It's not styles that clash; it's people that clash. You can get the most completely opposite styles, but if people have harmony, it doesn't matter because it's all music. You can get Stravinsky to play with Miles
Davis, because if they're harmonious, they're going to find something that's above them both. It's not like, "Don't play too heavy, man."

I just saw Jimi about two or three times after that jam at the Record Plant, but we didn't play together then. Every time we met we were in a rehearsal studio, and it just happened; I have no secret disclosures. Listen, they tell me they found tapes of Jimi and me. There's a whole hoo-ha about it, and it's such a lot of bull. When I asked them to send something I'd want to hear, they sent me something which had two or three minutes on it -- that's all. But if there *is* something, enough to make an
album or two or whatever, then I want to hear it. And if it's good, I want it out; I want people to share it. But if it's not good, it's a ripoff. Jimi's been ripped off artistically since he died, just for the sake of money, and that's a ripoff of the people as well. So I won't put anything out until I feel there's something good, because I feel responsible for his and my own policy, no matter who says what. I know what's good, and I'm not going to do it for money. I'm going to do it because the *music* is happening; that's all. But believe me, if it's good, it's going to be out there.

Jimi was a beautiful guitar player. He wasn't very schooled; he had a limited knowledge as far as musical harmony is concerned. But he had such an imagination that he made up for it. And that's what makes things happen, because if you get a guy with all knowledge and no imagination, he doesn't play anything. Knowledge helps, but I'm not saying knowledge is it.

I don't know what all this talk is, like Jimi's some kind of god. He's just an ordinary guy. I mean, he's just like a nice, loving, sweet person -- that's all. He's just like one of your friends, you know? He wasn't pretentious or anything. He was just a guitar player; that's all he was. That's all he ever wanted to be. I mean, he got spaced, you know, but we all were spaced in our own way. But he was still into the blues.

My impression of Jimi was of strength really. He was strong, and that meant something. To me he was soulful. There must have been a better word for it. What I mean is that he was dynamic. He could do things with the guitar that nobody had done before. In other words, he was a revolutionary, but he still had a lot of soul, and that's what makes things work. If you
don't have that, you can't make anything work. I think Jimi has had an effect on most contemporary guitar players. My influence on him is for him to say. I have no idea.

There has been this mystic status given to him, but I don't think he ever wanted it. All he ever wanted to do was just play. But he had this *thing* around him. I feel that he had it projected on him by the people who surrounded him. I feel he was murdered, frankly. Somebody gave him something. Somebody gave him something that they shouldn't have. I don't
think it was intentional or premeditated. Well, I don't know, maybe it was, but I doubt it. Even so, it was like someone's going to incur some bad karma.

I don't know what happened to all his equipment and stuff after he died. The vultures probably came in and pecked him dry, pecked his bones clean. There's been a lot of bad stuff around his name, not the least of it being people who have been releasing his music. You see, he wouldn't like it without his having quality control, though Alan Douglas' is one of the best
that's been out since Jimi died.

All in all, Jimi was a really sweet person and a beautiful guitar player.

Dudes. All I can say is DO NOT fuck with the brigade.

Last nigth it was ripping onshore and foggy. Flat the whole beach 'cept of course that one peak up in Kelly's Cove which was as usual head high and alternating between barreling and ramping. Also the wind in there was whipped around by the cliffs as it normally is to offshore and the sun was breaking through the fog.

Kelly Cove Local Boy's were out in force on the tight peak and anyone not in the crew was forced down the beach in to the fog and slop.

I was parked on the other side of the lot because the K.C.L.B. had all the good spots. Lot's of KCLB's who don't surf were hanging around with harleys and hot rods, drinking beers. And then a a couple lifted 4x4's pumping loud music pulls right in to the 2 spots that all of the KCLB's were hanging in. Sure enough the license plates said BRIGADE 1 and BRIGADE 2.

I ducked down behind my car and peered through my tinted glass window as the guys poured out of the two extra cabs while the KCLB crew just stared.

These dudes were npt particularly big but they seemed confident. The KCLB crew was stunned but eventualy realized what was happening and some yelling began. The BRIGADE undeterred, waxed up and then walked up to the KCLB's while they were yelling and reached in to their cooler and grabbed a beer, cracked it open downed it then sprayed some in some big harley dudes face!

Harley dude and KCLB had to do something so he lunged at the BRIGADE dude who quickly punched his face and then side kicked his stomache doubling him over. The rest of the toughies moved forward a step as the girls backed up. The Brigade dudes all jumped forward in fighting pose and then the dude who took the beer said...."we are going to go out and rip this little wave apart and when we return you better have some more fucking beer for us"

Sure enough they paddle out, and all you could hear was the sound of the board bottom as it hits a lip. They were throwing spray almost to the boardwalk and getting barreled. It seemed that after each wave a brigade guy took a KCLB came in with a broken fin and a welt on his face.

DO NOT. I REPEAT, DO NOT FUCK WITH THE BRIGADE.

I paddle out on my other board to go surf with these hot shots and watch from up close. Sure enough the brigade told me to beat it. I said I am a tranny and thank you for regulating the local boys.

They broke my fins out and said "go get beer for us"

Sure enough as I was leaving the Kelly Cove Local Boy's were arguing with their female crew who somehow in the original mayhem made plans to meet up with the 8 brigaders at the beach chalet for some drinking and flirting.

SF surf historians, who is truelove? what does he look like? where is he now? any info much appreciated to contextualize the stories from a couple days ago.

Posted by: at March 25, 2005 11:47 AM

hey so i managed to track down a photo of the brigade... just so's ya'll can recognize who to recognize:

Posted by: g at March 25, 2005 11:54 AM

Interesting.

It seems that the Brigade is a projection of penile inadequacies. The symbolism of lifted 4x4 trucks and spraying beer supports my theory.

It is very rare indeed to read such an expansive displacement of homoerotic tendencies. Note the desire to dominate boys... you say 'the Kelly Cove Boys?' I can only speculate why you're infatuated with coves.

In summary, such traits have traditionally been attributed to Mandrills with aggravated hemorrhoids.

Perhaps my esteemed collegue Dr. Jung has more to offer?

Posted by: Sigmund at March 25, 2005 12:26 PM

Rude mandrills and just plain apes. spoken like a true weenie of the oscar mayer variety. This site is over, the juvenille banter has convinced e that his services are no longer needed. Bout time

that brigadoon story was a farce. kellys kooks can have their little waist high shorebreak. i never see any of those fags on the outer bar.

Posted by: at March 25, 2005 12:55 PM

On the Truelove stuff, I always steered clear of him as a skinny grom(I still would as a chubby 30 something) but did see him put some folks in check nothing really bad.

I haven't seen him around for like 5+ years, the last time I saw him was at Kellys on a hot glassy day. I think I heard that he is living on Kauai but occasionally visits SF.

I don't know if it was my perspective as a grom or actual reality but the whole OB scene seemed a lot heavier in those days. Hot days the beach was way more of a gang scene. I remember cars getting stolen, cops cuffing people at gunpoint, Harleys on the beach. One time I was changing in my wetsuit at VFWs around age 17 when a truckload of Frisco Skins pulled up they all had baseball bats and stuff. I was scared shitless, I basically ran out into the water as fast as I could.

The sad fact is, there are a great many among us who believe we have entered into a new Dark Age, that it will be a long and brutal slog indeed and BushCo is merely the precursor, the devil's handmaiden, and that we have a long way to go into the bleak and the bloody and the environmentally devastating before the pendulum begins its slow swing back toward the light.

Posted by: at March 25, 2005 01:05 PM

brigade are you there? I want to see you guys rip and tear and lacerate!! My heroes!!

Posted by: at March 25, 2005 01:07 PM

Aren't the Kelly's Cove local boys some old fart longboard club? Also aren't they based at the other Kelly's cove?

Posted by: at March 25, 2005 01:10 PM

Listen, you fuckers, you screwheads. Here is a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the scum, the cunts, the dogs, the filth, the shit. Here is a man who stood up.

Posted by: Travis Bickle at March 25, 2005 01:12 PM

No, their fishermen. They dominate with their wires, hooks, and buckets. I told one of them to split once, now im hanging over his fireplace.

Posted by: at March 25, 2005 01:14 PM

they're?

Posted by: at March 25, 2005 01:17 PM

The brigade and the brah boy's are one and the same.

the brigade is a splinter group. word is that they met in some far flung country and with like minded opionions formed a bond.

if brah boy's ever need back up which is never, they call the brigade and vice versa.

Posted by: at March 25, 2005 01:23 PM

I don't know, I saw a KKLB sticker on some truck at the other kelly's cove so I figured they are from there. I haven't surfed the SF kelly's cove since high school, because it's a high school kind of surf spot. It's a spot for surfers to show tourists how cool they and the city is. Much like Ft Point. Deep in their conciousnes the surfers at these spots think 'these tourists are going wow,we. they will head back to Ohio tommorow and word will spread in Dayton as to how cool SF is. Word will spread to my family in Akron as to the coolness I have moved to. Christmas time I will be the man, dude.'.
