Rainbow country

Amping after 22 hours of no surf.
Wipers squawk as the rain beats down.
Time the lights on Geary (from girlfriend's place) around the storied bend at the Cliff House.
Ocean surface a bit jumbled.
High tide dishevelment.
Some thick inside bombs.
Nobody around.
Great Highway flooded.
Moody peaks at Sliz.
Heavy but approachable.
A little south in the wind so head south.
Brilliant sky-clearing over P-town.
Flat at Smoke-a-Jay. way inside dribblers.
Glassy... offshore groomed.
Linda Marginal offering some dirty closeouts.
Maybe a scant few shoulders.
Thick swath of muddy goop spread throughout the inside.
A few innoculated warriors making a go of it.
Donuts.
On the way back home, decide to check the pier.
Walked out to the end.
Thick, raunchy, chunkified, overhead groundswell mounds caused the pier to shake and rumble as each passed underneath.
Cool view of unmakeable barrels.
Great to sense the significance.
Wind energy translated and preserved.
Finally unleashed for our pleasure days or weeks later.

E, isn't it great to be coming home from your girlie's house at dawnie looking and amping at the waves. I used to skate down the strand all stoked from the girl session the night before and stoked again looking at the waves and trying to skate as fast i could home to get in the water. I miss that cool ride home, but not that girl.

Just reminiscin'.

Have an IRIE and wave-filled long weekend

2/17 - Pipe Report & Tiger Story -- courtesy of claudia ferrari
Another Northwest swell built up last night into this morning reaching its peaks this afternoon with 15 to 20 feet surf in certain spots.
....gorgeous sunny skies.
The $75,000 Monster Energy Pro at Pipeline,
had their debut day today, with the two first rounds of competition in heats of 6 men battling challenging conditions.
San Clemente's Greg Long, who yesterday survived a tiger shark attack here at Rocky Point, was still shaking on the inside today and was one of the early eliminations.
"The attack came from out of nowhere.
It came straight up from underneath and sent me flying. I saw the fin and started swimming away from it, kicking my feet, and kind of grazed it with my feet. Then, I just scratched for the beach. When I got to shore I saw the damage it had done to my board. I patted myself down, no injuries, and just counted my blessings."(Jodi Young/contest press release)
There are three more days of competition and tomorrow it should continuous surfing/conditions permitting.

does anyone know a good website to get comparitive info on the ski resorts conditions? doesn't seem like there's really a surfline of snow. i am trying to decide which resort i'm gonna hit up tomorrow and want the one (north lake preferably) that is most likely to have fresh pow. also, anyone have an opinion on diamond peak? i hear it's really improved lately and is closest to where i'm staying.

Posted by: steamwand at February 18, 2005 11:04 AM

also andrew on 57th-gotta love oakland, huh? i'm going out of town this weekend but you could probably tag along with me next weekend or we could try to work out a dp. i do one at least once a week. but i don't want grass or your ass. i'm at steamwand89 at yahoo.

Posted by: steamwand at February 18, 2005 11:05 AM

steamwand, i usually go here.

on the snow

Posted by: lerm at February 18, 2005 11:07 AM

my best experience for fresh snow has been sugar bowl.

i've also been wondering about diamond peak. i took a look at the map. it is small but seems to have some challenging runs.

i'm heading up next weekend. stoked!

Posted by: lerm at February 18, 2005 11:10 AM

thanks lerm. weird that all this rain hasn't translated into more snow. oh well, can't wait to breathe the mountain air, although it looks like i'll miss some fun surf.

steamwand: also consider mt rose -- not very big but they're at high elevation so the snow is often in relatively better shape.

and are you riding a blue board these days? think i was out with ya yesterday morn, i saw you make that late drop, niceness, too bad the shoulder disappeared before you could do much with it...

e: nice title today ... feel like dancin, feel like jumpin...

Good olas last night. I got out after work and had some fun rides. Greeted nearly every surfer in SF as I drifted north at a jogging pace. Last ride was one of the longest ever at OB for that size wave. Took off on an outsider - one of the bigger waves that came through. Fast left drop and bottom turn, pumped a couple times, cutback into the white water as it started to mushout. The it reformed and sent me flying left again. A couple quick sections and cutback again as it started to mush out. Then it reformed again and I rode it to knee deep water and walked in. Surprised and happy.

Posted by: Dennis at February 18, 2005 12:02 PM

Sorry guys, it worked in the preview- I guess I'll have to rely on E for getting them up!

Posted by: artifact at February 18, 2005 12:09 PM

loon: yeah, i think we might hit up mt. rose on sunday and diamond peak monday, but we'll see. i keep hearing good things about both of them. and yeah, that's my rfs board, which honestly i have been a little bit frustrated with the last couple of sessions. sometimes it seems like i am through a turn except the board is not quite done yet, like the fin is flinging me. i need to get used to it/ride it more, but i have been loving my fish, starting to learn how to ride in larger waves. sorry i didn't say hi, i didn't see/recognize you.

b-stah, what do you think about having both the rfs fin box and a tradition thruster finbox set-up in one board and being able to switch back and forth. would that work?

Posted by: steamwand at February 18, 2005 12:29 PM

cant quite pull a good session leavign at 5 from soma, at least if your me...some lovely looking waves though and trippy lighting, one guy was getting stuffed backside more than 3 times i saw..couldnt quite get into anything in 30 mins..i think bbr must have been one of the boogies out there was that you bbr, light hair? it was crazy with the lighting couldnt really see much at all when it started getting darker..i think i saw that barrel that guy got in that photo it was nice..

Anyone get the story on what was going down yesterday midafternoon at Sloat? 10 cop cars, crime scene tape on the beach, a big explosion, ...?

Posted by: at February 18, 2005 12:38 PM

Just got back from midbeach midday check. Narnars on offer. Two takers on the smaller peak to the south. Did not see any rides, but only watched for a few sets.

Doof and I opted for BBQ and Beer for lunch.

It got dark very quickly last night. There was plenty of light on my last wave. By the time I got home (5 block walk) it was pitch dark and raining.

Posted by: Dennis at February 18, 2005 01:00 PM

just did the poop scoop up and down the beach. if you were getting really excited and trying to find an excuse to get out of work and surf, you may want to wait. there are some meaty sections to be had but it's just not quite coming together (emphasis on "quite"). hopefully it will get better later this afternoon.

Tsunami Uncovers Ancient City in India

By Associated Press

February 18, 2005, 5:34 PM EST

MAHABALIPURAM, India -- Archaeologists have begun underwater excavations of what is believed to be an ancient city and parts of a temple uncovered by the tsunami off the coast of a centuries-old pilgrimage town.

Three rocky structures with elaborate carvings of animals have emerged near the coastal town of Mahabalipuram, which was battered by the Dec. 26 tsunami.

As the waves receded, the force of the water removed sand deposits that had covered the structures, which appear to belong to a port city built in the seventh century, said T. Satyamurthy, a senior archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of India.

Mahabalipuram is already well known for its ancient, intricately carved shore temples that have been declared a World Heritage site and are visited each year by thousands of Hindu pilgrims and tourists. According to descriptions by early British travel writers, the area was also home to seven pagodas, six of which were submerged by the sea.

The government-run archaeological society and navy divers began underwater excavations of the area on Thursday.

"The tsunami has exposed a bas relief which appears to be part of a temple wall or a portion of the ancient port city. Our excavations will throw more light on these," Satyamurthy told The Associated Press by telephone from Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.

The six-foot rocky structures that have emerged in Mahabalipuram, 30 miles south of Madras, include an elaborately carved head of an elephant and a horse in flight. Above the elephant's head is a small square-shaped niche with a carved statue of a deity. Another structure uncovered by the tsunami has a reclining lion sculpted on it.

According to archaeologists, lions, elephants and peacocks were commonly used to decorate walls and temples during the Pallava period in the seventh and eighth centuries.

"These structures could be part of the legendary seven pagodas. With the waters receding and the coastline changing, we expect some more edifices to be exposed," Satyamurthy said.

I can't believe that have that dudes brother in custody. I'm sure they were just fucking around and this went way south. On suspicion of vehicular manslaughter? That's whack. Usually saved for drunks that run red lights and kill people. The brothers gotta live with this the rest of his life. "Fuckin' cops."
