Barhedral Zaharzabo
[here's the last installment.. from a few weeks ago, feel free to pass over if you remember it]
Soo.. let’s see.. the last time I spoke of the hidden Isle of Barhedral Zaharzabo the Flower of Zibe had imprinted a faint multi-colored tattoo onto the palm of my hand. I recited an ancient Zen Koan from my grandfather’s book to dislodge the Flower. When I now touch the tattooed flower petals of varying color on my hand I experience a intense rush of different emotions, depending on which color I touch. Before this moment I had taken the whole story of the Isle of Barhedral, my grandfather’s book, the propensity of members of my family to experience vivid dreams, the existence of my ancestor Marmaluke Dohefdron, the Flower Zibe and the rest of it as a bizarre yet harmless distraction. But now that my body had been permanently marked, and the dream-world of my childhood revived, I grew both anxious and determined. This was for real. I was now committed. For the next two days I buried myself in the book given to me by my grandfather. I poured over countless descriptions of journeys off the north-west coast of Africa. I studied the animism and black-magic of ancient Mali and Mauritania. I deciphered cryptic algorithms pertaining to the colored patterns within the Flower of Zibe. I did my best to translate ancient, faded Latin entries that described the sorcery and legend of my supposed ancestor Barhedral Zaharzabo. The more I read and digested, the more I realized that the hunt for this isle had consumed and captivated various members of my family for ages. There also included countless descriptions of dreams. Dreams of wild abandon. Crazy, fanciful netherworlds; arcane, pungent, olfactory revelations; grotesque, wild seductions, etc. Dreams of dizzying variety and intensity. Throughout many of these dreams appeared glimpses of colored patterns. Throughout many of these dreams also appeared mythical creatures and demons. It was startling to notice that many of the visions and characters within my own dreams of the last few days were described in this book. A guy by the name of Ghonan Klinterlock, writing in Algiers in 1645, described seeing a large red dragon with three eyes shooting arrows of glittering flame. I read dream after dream and slowly became aware of a few underlying themes within the dreams. Patterns of color (specifically red, then yellow, then green then olive then blue). Prehistoric flying creatures spitting rays of flaming death. Crystalline mountainous structures. Glittering, dripping, prehensile fangs. I began to attempt to piece together these various themes.
… to be continued
[July 13 installment]
I’ll pick up the story of the hidden Isle of Barhedral Zaharzabo three weeks after the last installment. Numerous dreams and countless hours pouring over the book left to me by my grandfather confirmed the fact that I needed to go to Africa. I booked a flight and soon found myself in Rabat, Morocco. From Rabat I traveled via local bus to the sleepy coastal town of Tafraoute. Tafraoute had been mentioned many times in my grandfather’s book. I had also seen a faint vision of Tafraoute’s main bazaar in one of my dreams. Within this dream I touched the blue petal on my tattooed Flower of Zibe and was overcome with feelings of unquenchable curiosity. Within the dream I wandered through the central bazaar of Tafraoute, looking for something. In the dream I was a parakeet, flying through the narrow streets, alighting on the rooftops of mosques and the backs of camels. I wound around dusty, crowded alleys, past colorful carpet sellers and nut merchants. I weaved through multi-hued tapestries of overhanging cloth, through pungent aromas of tobacco, kabobs and hashish and past old-world vignettes of turbaned women stirring cauldrons of curdling milk. In my dream I finally came to a dusty, crenulated doorway with an attractive, arabesque frame and a dim light coming from within. I flew inside but woke from my dream upon seeing the unmistakable visage of an ancient man with one eye and a mischievous smile.
Soo… now here I was, in real life, wondering through the central bazaar of Tafraoute. To my amazement, I recognized the basic layout from my dream and had little trouble retracing my steps to that same arabesque doorway in a dirty back-alley. I summoned my courage and walked through the threshold. The building seemed easily 1000 years old. But it was hard to tell as most everything in this part of the world seemed ancient. It was dark inside so I called out “Al salaam a'alaykum” (Good day) and at first received no response. But after a few minutes I heard a raspy, throaty, far-away voice. “Over here my young friend. Come over here and sit by the light.” I followed the voice, and the faint greenish light, down a flight of earthen stairs, into a subterranean chamber. Sitting on a small stool in front of a tiny fireplace was the very man from my dream. His one good eye was fixated on a hookah that he busily packed with what appeared to be fresh, green marijuana. He bade me sit down, finished packing the sticky, green bud, and then sat back and took a gigantic, bubbling, hit from the snaking tube connecting the hookah to a mouthpiece. He exhaled a voluminous amount of smoke and then set his gaze on me. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time,” he said. “I noticed an unusual little parakeet enter my doorway a few weeks ago and knew that the day grew near. We have but little time and much to do! Please imbibe in this plant of the spirits and then we will begin our journey to Anti Atlaslar, the abandoned village, where my minion will help perform the ceremony of Krim. There is much preparation we must manage. You must fortify your strength. You must summon your inner warrior. You must relinquish insular shortcomings. Prepare yourself, my brother, for you are about to embark on the final journey of the rest of your life.”

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at July 13, 2004 10:57 AMSorry to post this again, but the room in our house will be going soon, and I wanted to give niceness one last shot at it. A surfer really should take it.
It's available starting August 1. You'd live with two surfers, in a pretty killer surf house. You’d like it.
The room is nice and big, hardwood floors, closet, lots of light. The house has tons of space --garage, driveway, backyard. Original woodwork, fireplace, DSL, washer and dryer, dishwasher, surfboard racks downstairs, and a sick pool table.
$600, not including utilities.
Ocean beach is six blocks away. We’re at 42nd and Balboa. Here’s the view from the house:
Anyway, email me at lewis at discoversurfing.com if you might be into it.

I think the reason you haven't gotten more takers is because of the picture - a close look at it causes the gonads of mere mortals to shrink upward into the torso, the adrenal glands to secrete their stomach-gnawing juice and the pulse to triple. Perhaps something more on the order of the mellow sunset pic that's gracing blakestah's site these days would do the trick.
Posted by: redworm at July 13, 2004 11:22 AMRedworm, that is a sunRISE picture, taken over the Sea of Cortes while I sleepily rubbed my eyes and couldn't believe the vision in front of the tent.
BVB, I am me, and no one else.
Still waiting for my signed BVB picture...
Posted by: blakestah at July 13, 2004 11:39 AMyeah redworm, I ran into that problem the last time I posted a room.
Christian wrote something about how I was going left at Mav's this year, and I think it scared some people off.
Just to clarify: Yes, I like big waves. They're fun. But it doesn't mean my housemates have to like big waves too! I promise I won't force you to go out on big scary days.
Bird, you there? Tell them. I surf small waves all the time.
Posted by: lewis at July 13, 2004 11:41 AMi can vouch for Lewis surfing small waves. I've seen him shralping on 2foot jetty drivel.
Posted by: e at July 13, 2004 11:48 AMConfirmation: Lewis shreds the small waves, even grovels the mushy. Can't confirm whether or not he'll try to force roommates out on big days, but I certainly hope he does. :)
Posted by: bird at July 13, 2004 11:58 AMyo bruce..just saw yesterdays post and to answer your question that kid seemed totally cool actually as did the other kids out there, i was just jealous i wasnt getting as many waves as em..the blond kid in particular did seem very well behaved and mellow, my girlfriend fell in love with him actually so maybe i seemed a little bummed because of that..no worries on the pics..if i got any waves that day that i was proud of than maybe but it was just a nice day to be down there..fun mellow waves at the lane, chilling at the tea house spa with the lady and accidently catching rev horton heat for the first time..

Ok, you'all know how bitter I am about " surf culture" (if you could call it "a culture," ) - or at least you should know by now, if not, you do now.
Art tip: Friday at the YBGCenter for the Arts, my old place of employ, is hosting an exhibit called,
"Lovable Losers." All the usual suspects redefiningf or defining again the Art of Skate Culture loosley based on a show outta NY curated by Aaron Rose. My ultra nemisis and sellout master C.R. Stecyk ( DOGSHITTOWN) and Kevin Ancell are organizers. Also in the show are works from Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, Tommy Guerero, Ed Templeton and many others. A lot of the work is dated but may be worth a look - sure to be a better show than that show put -on by that fuscker
who curated the deal at Minna a few months back. I'm still looking for him in the water and will not hesitate. I tell you this becasue the museum is broke and could use your 10 bucks. www.yerbabuenaarts.org

I had to take Rocky to the Vet around 10:00 and can confirm that it's horrible, as if you needed confirmation. Honors to the handful of guys who were out at Monkey Scream Beach doing what they could.
This keeps up and they'll be serving Jim Jone's Koolaide to you guys in the Aves and handing out certificates for free visits to Dr. Kevorkian. I guess there's always klosed out kook kove and the ankle slappers at EG Pimp Point.

Posted by: j at July 13, 2004 01:15 PMI will second BVB's nod to yerba buena this friday. the show, 'beautiful losers', will in my opinion be the biggest party of the year. Numerous bands, djs, and a wooden bowl built specifically for this exhibit will be on-hand for enjoyment. top pro rippers will be destroying the bowl. people are coming from far and wide to witness this spectacle. I actually have guests in town from japan and new york. I am stoked on this party and proud to live in a city where a major museum can pay tribute to these individuals. don't miss this!!

Posted by: lewis at July 13, 2004 01:30 PMe, when you write, are any possible hallucinogens involved? ;) Lewis, I would be all over that room if I could actually afford paying all my bills now. I'm planning trip in Novemberish time to Italy. I'll probably take my skate. Anyone have any interesting non-tourist spots? I'll be in Florence. The art show sounds sick, I'll try and be there. Crazy to see people who used to be punk skater kids in a high quality art show. Anyone ever listen to Paul Barman? The guys a nut. I've got a few pics from my Oahu trip, no surfing though, and that's why I won't post the pics because everyone has seen Oahu. so.. yeah..
Posted by: Ian at July 13, 2004 01:31 PMbvb, what's your beef with stecyk? i'm sure even YOU read his skateboarder magazine articles as a aggro surf teen back in the 70's.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at July 13, 2004 01:47 PMsheeeeeit. i wish.
those shows get super packed on opening nights too so plan on waiting in a long line and not so much elbo room..its a bummer though that SF museums have to throw huge partys to get the rent paid..crazy sf art scene..
Posted by: bagel at July 13, 2004 01:47 PMOh yes. For those who enjoy this genre. Jack Johnson is dropping another film soon called "Broken Down Melody." Should be a banger.

Posted by: Ian at July 13, 2004 02:26 PMe - fun stuff, looking forward to the next installment.
Had an excellant time at a suprisingly uncrowded spot a few days ago. Surfed myself into an idiot's grin that took a couple days to wear off.
The deal at Yerba Buena definitely sounds like the place to be, but I can't go to those surf/skate-art opening parties anymore. Ancell won't say hello to me in public and the chicks are all closer to my kid's age. Bah, humbug! However, Yerba Buena is an important place and we should all support it whenever we can.
Posted by: Jimmie at July 13, 2004 02:37 PMIan,
Check out Sienna if you get a chance. I was there in the fall a few years ago and didn't find it too touristy. Sienna was the local power center in the region until the plague killed something like 2/3 of the population. Hence, it looks like it did in the 1200-1300s. Pretty cool. Monteriggioni is another little hilltop town with some interesting sites. BTW, the coffee in Italy is the best in the world.

Posted by: dano at July 13, 2004 02:40 PMRiding Giants is going to premiere any moment. I happen to work with the wife of a guy who has produced a couple of well-known surf documentaries. He got a sneak preview of Giants and said it was the best surfing movie ever. Anyone else seen it?
Posted by: Lizard at July 13, 2004 02:50 PMdamn, i love arty girls, but unfortunately they don't love me in return :(
Posted by: j at July 13, 2004 03:15 PMLizard, I think that phrase "different strokes for different folks" applies to this one. If you're really stoked on the history of surfing in America/Hawaii, you really like Greg Noll (I feel most of the emphasis was placed on his role in surfing), and if you really like big waves, then I believe this is for you. They cover the top big wave spots, but I felt they wrote off Mavericks as a top spot as far as how powerful/heavy it gets. They didn't really show Mav's in its full glory. It does have solid interviews, old and new footage, and great history. It's a great movie, but in my opinion, not the greatest surfing movie ever. Basically, if you live in Hawaii, and/or claim to be a part of the scene over there, you'll love it, as I think it's geared to stoke them out more than anyone else. Just my opinion though.
Posted by: Ian at July 13, 2004 03:29 PMlizzard, I saw a preview for giants on OLN and it is basicly the same old story with Jeff Clark explaining how he surfed Mavericks alone, etc. in that farmer style of his.
The guy's a good surfer and all, but that story is just getting fricking old.
Posted by: trustfundsurffreak at July 13, 2004 03:53 PMis that movie out yet in SF?
Posted by: bagel at July 13, 2004 04:02 PMthat's cool Christian.
check it..
McLaughlin: The most difficult thing, I think, in being a musician is to get out of the way.
Fripp: How do you get out of the way? Do you have specific techniques or regimens that you use? Can you just get yourself out of the way without thinking about it?
McLaughlin: If I'm thinking about it, I'm in the way. You have to forget, to forget everything. The minute we forget everything is when we're finally found.
Posted by: e at July 13, 2004 04:23 PMi hate almost all of those hollywood surf movies but when i saw the preview for riding giants on the big screen i got goosebumps. i don't know what they did to the film in the preview (it looked sped up and kinda grainy) but it made the waves look way different than anything i'd seen before. plus the titles and graphics were done really well and reminded me of David Carson's work at SURFER. it seemed kinda dark and really different from the blue-crush/endless-summer cheesefest.
Posted by: bbr at July 13, 2004 04:32 PMIan, I don't know you but I wanna bodysurf your pictured spot! We go!
The show at YBCAshould be fun; insert disclaimer here: I have the useless art degree, friends in the show, plan to skate the bowl and am a member at the museum. (And was asked to submit to BVB's nemisis' show, oops, I am in deep. Kevin's curating this show is one of the many things that precluded my inclusion here- I don't think he likes me much). But...
As much as I am sure that I will enjoy the show & am glad of the friends & others getting the exposure, perhaps a little dough even. I gotta say this smacks of the new "hang everything" program sweeping the nation's museums & galleries. I have no problem with showing this work, but would consider it to be design rather than art. I think that in the last ten years we have raised a generation of illustrators and led them to believe that they are artists. Let's call this show what it is: a show of pop culture and design. Same with the Laguna Art Museum show & etc.... And before you all jump, I am sure that there are individuals in the show whose work speaks to the human condition in a manner that is more profound than the artwork on a skate, but I am willing to bet those works are few and far between. Skating a bowl as performance art? c'mon. Ancell's hula dancer installation is good art. His hand made boards are fine craft. Let's rememmber the distinction.
