« slack winds... crummy surf | Main | a few waves on a beautiful day. »

the wave are out there

Another morning of relatively calm winds had me sniffin' around for rideable waves. Northern OB looked unappetizing.. to the point of resembling regurgitated nastiness. I saw some semi-appealing areas around mid-beach, and seriously considered giving it a go. Probably slightly overhead. mostly disorganized thumpers, but quite a few glassyish pockets and zippy walls on offer.. or so it seemed. Not too too much work.. though you'd be takin' plenty of mischievous closeouts on the head. Sloat looked funky and whitewashy. no takers on the early tip, but i saw three heads bobbing around out there on my way back from San Mateo county's finest.

Hit up beautious, mysterious, rambunctious, semi-secret Ram Adnil for the early. When i first arrived, around 6:34, there were maybe 25 people in the water. The surf looked pretty good. Relative glass. LHGVAG out in the middle of the pack catching rights. Fairly consistent head-high windswell lurching, groping or meandering shoreward. Closeouts predominated, but a respectable percentage of waves decided to not break all at once. A few waves flirted with overhead+ status. i paddled out toward the north and caught a few quick lefts. took about 3000 waves on the head.. then locked into a multi-section right that allowed for a few pumps and even a mid-face turn!! woohoo!! maybe my first real wave all month! then i took another 50 duckdives.. where were all these waves coming from?? I guess this spot successfully pulls in the steep 7ft 9sec windsell from 322 degrees. Actually, you might want to keep those numbers in mind if you enjoy surfing this storied San Mateo county surf park. Could be magic Mar numerology. I caught a few more fun rides.. had a chance for an awesome right but stood up slightly off-balance and kind-of kooked my way down the line.

soo.. i hate to say it but the wind started blowing with more ferocity as i de-suited in the dirt lot. might be too late now? also the tide's on it's way out. .5 low around 12:30.

another lil' poll if you're so inclined:
great books (Dune, Shogun, Cryptonomicon, Love in the Time of Cholera)

Aspect of your surfing you most want to improve (finding the barrel)

Surfer(s) with great vibes (alex martins, sharkbait, LHGVAG, Tom, Loon)

Country producing the finest females? (Brazil, Quebec...montreal.. not a country.. but.. damn!!)

pet-peeves (country-clubs, fraternities, GWB, hair in the drain, missing good surf)

current fave bands (musicians) (Tortoise, Miles Davis, Zakir Hussein, Bill Frissell)

most underrated but sexy body-part (small of the back, ankles!)

Ethan, we may have crossed paths! I was there 7:15 to 8:30, having made a last-minute decsion to give it a look on the way to work, and hung with the knot of folks a little south of fast food. Compared to recent outings the work was downright easy (which is not saying much!), and the waves were fun, mainly 3-4ft with some bigger sets, where I was. Yes, close-outs, but fewer than the last two days, and a couple of peelers including the first left that I've really been able to do much with (read: stay on the face at all), plus a couple of long rides from outside to the beach, including the all-important just-one-more.

in honor of tonight's game a little g. love:

When the school lets out and the shifts are done
Get the boys together get a ball get a run
Lace up the sneaks kick off them shoes
I'll admit I play to win yo cause I don't like to lose
At Seger Park they've got the competition
Good moves baby -- I'm the definition

They shooting hoops
Yeah Yeah Yeah
They playing basketball

I learned at Old Pine, see I'm the school yard hustler
I had my hardknocks now I'm an off the backboard buster
I could fake to the left penetrate like Mike
Or 360 in the air as Dominique might
I could pass like Magic
I could shoot like the Bird, after a Doctor J dunk
The courtside drunk said good lord

(chorus)

Lunch from a hot dog stand a pretzel and a pop
We've been playing all day cuase we've had this court nonstop
The city sun is hot -- all the courts they steaming
Bright eyed young ball handlers are believing and dreaming
Hoping some day all this playing will be paying
That's what all the sideline junkies smoking reefer keep saying

South Lindy at 8:30, on a 9'1", bloody terrible conditions, got one open face left. A few dags on logs crawling over a knee-high left at the docks. A truck load of kids showed up for lessons as I paddled in. Not worth it unless you're truly desperate.

OB: foggy w/typical foggy breeze. Waist to head splatty waves on the inside. Kind of reminded me of a petulant toddler throwing toys around. Paddle up a channel and a splatty thing would get tossed towards your right, then another reluctantly chucked to your left. You get to dodge them in the middle. Scoot around and maybe find a drop - I didn't, but the next guy out did. The low tide seems to be mellowing ol' ob, less chunks and seeing some slow moving, low-angle mushy but rideable looking stuff out the back. [ Kicking self, why did I paddle out at the worst hour?] I think E made the best call this morning, but utility sesh is not out of the question. One or two folks mucking around. Oh, and the water is a balmy 74 degrees. Air temp - 78.

btw...i don't think anyone mentioned anything re lerm's post yesterday: "heading to vegas for a few days. an old friend is getting married to a stripper that has a bunch of stripper friends that work there. should be interesting."

now this may be standard stuff to the rest of the niceness fam, but i gotta say that this stands out as a pretty...hmmm...unusual wedding to this kid! first...who knows someone who marries a stripper? second...what single dude (hopeful assumption on my part for lerm's sake) gets invited to the wedding celebration? i guess the answer is the lerminator! deeeaaammm! i'm sure this goes without saying, but..lerm...have fun! ; )

well, i may not be in central america anymore, but my stomach still thinks I am! this is the second trip in a row where I have paid for my waves with more than 10 days of 'mal estomago', and unfortunately things are still going strong (or mal) for me. so i may have worms... but it's a small price to pay for tropical waves.

anyway, to balance out some of the negativity i am experiencing and sharing, i recall fond memories of the trip, like this session: I had been waiting all week for a new swell to show up, and since I was camping alone on the beach, my main activity, besides bothering (or talking to) the countless hermit crabs coinhabiting my campsite, was staring at the ocean, waiting for signs of the swell. Like most Souths, it was late, but finally one morning I woke up and realized there were sets breaking on the outer reef, and the new juice was here. I think I caught a small session in the morning, but decided to save up for a bigger arvo session, allowing the swell to fill in more. Before I left to go camping, a Guatemalan freedom fighter and political exile -- the cook at the restaurant where I worked -- gifted to me a single joint to bring when he heard I was going without 'mota'. So the day the new swell came, I lit that baby up, grabbed my board, and enjoyed a highly sensual, vivid color, hum of the jungle walk towards the surf. I was headed for a point about 30 minutes away, but 10 minutes into my walk, I came out of the jungle on the next beach over, and happened to witness a set of 8 stacked 8 footers groping and roping along the reef/point, marching in with classic 20 second style to throw their perfect lips over glassy walls into an Empty lineup. Obviously I was going no further! I ran down the beach, tried to stretch, sprinted into the water, started to paddle out and then caught the tail end of a wave from a set that came in before I was fully out. It was a good warmup drop, and then I had a solid 15-20 minutes of typical south swell lull to contemplate my position, and try to contain my excitement. I was feeling a little bit Stoked!! Blue skies, electric stony vibes, emptiness, and most of all perfect sets of south swell. Of course it was hard to sit in the right spot by myself and not get caught inside, but I did my best, and when the outer reefs would light up, giving me a 2 minute warning to my own approaching set, I had to try to control my jubilant nerves so I wouldn't bumble the steep takeoffs. It was a rather dreamlike session, and with the extra long period from the start of a new swell, it was possible to catch the first wave, and paddle back out in time for another one, and possibly even two more waves in the same set. Perfect conditions to try a late drop in the pitching lip, faceplant, and then see the exact same situation to try again later, only this time knowing what NOT to do. After an hour or two, a local finally paddled out to join me (amazingly, someone came to check it earlier and decided not to paddle out -- too inconsistent for them I guess), and the new arrival didn't really speak, so much as just Hooot. Hoooooot the new set marching in, hoooot the big waves and drops he and I were making, hoot hoot hoot the beautiful outpouring of energy the ocean was gracing us with.

Well, sorry for the long post... but it's memories like those that make a little case of Iguanaria (from some late night Iguana Soup munching with a Nico Rasta - the source of my illness I believe) a small price to pay...

Keep sharing the Love niceness...

the top 10 poll stuff is kinda kookish and I'm surprised you keep doing it e, but I've been meaning to suggest (if you haven't already) you check out some Casteneda. Don Juan a Yaqui Way of Knowledge, A Separate Reality, Journey to Ixtlan, Tales of Power, etc. From some of the stuff you've posted I think you might find it interesting..

cadaver - i'm surprised you haven't figured it out yet.. but.. i'm kinda kookish!! in the past i've been called Kooky McKook, sometimes Sir Kookle VonKooklesburg, othertimes Baron Von Kookleheimer.

i've always liked reading and doing polls.. don't know why.. always been a sucker for em'.

The poll stuff is always interesting and quickly gratifying, it's just that it's so USA Today AOL FOX News WalMart-ish -- which I've never found you or the niceness crew to come off..(save for the odd butt shot here or there). HEY rock on and keep doing whatever you damn well please, you bros rule..

Great book: S. Freud, Civilization and it's discontents (if you want to understand SF)

Improve: Not choking late take-offs on overhead waves.

Great vibe: The dysfunctional family who post on this blog.

Finest females: Santa Cruz (oh, you said country, not county?) The women of Tahiti, hands down.

Pet peeves: Driving across SF and dealing with the idiots who don't know how to handle a four-way stop, dodging homeless guys pushing shopping carts down the middle of the street, and getting tailgated by brain-dead drivers who drive way too fast through neighborhoods with kids.

Fave music: Johny Lang, Spin Docs, Cheryl Crow- but I'm still listening a lot to the Stones, Who, and Zep. Old habits die hard.

Body part: A woman's soft skin

A lot of people believe the Pistons are constructed in a manner that could give the Lakers a lot of trouble because of Wallace and Wallace, and the depth of talent in their frontcourt. That's fine to say, but are they really capable of neutralizing O'Neal and Malone? Really? Ben gives up five inches and 100 pounds to O'Neal, and Rasheed has rarely gotten the best of Malone while they matched up for years in the Western Conference. Hamilton has been the key to all of the Pistons success in the playoffs and he is not going to outplay Bryant. People are always in awe of Bryant's offensive skills, but his shutdown defense is as good as anybody in the league when it matters most. The Lakers also have the clutch experience of Derek Fisher off the bench. But the key matchup could be at point guard, particularly the way both Detroit's Chauncey Billups and the Lakers' Gary Payton have struggled to find their flow in this postseason. Billups is a lot stronger than Payton, but in no way is capable of running the offense as smoothly. The intangibles of the Lakers will prevail, regardless of this inclination for change.

Just back from a morning Jury Duty sesh, still recovering from CK's throw-down from a nice mountain bike ride last night, so let me catch up....

Here is what I got from reading through the posts thus far:

- E is a kook and likes polls.
- Blakestah surfed Lindy today and he swears he never surfs there. Its cool B-Stah, every dog bites now and then.... Ain't no shame in the Lindy game.
- Lindy seemed to be an option this morning and many folks got some surfage in there... Good work!
- Mexisurf is about to get his nut off for like 3 months. I am jealous.
- J is the smartest guy here since he seems to be a hoops fan (Lakers I hope!)
- Lerm could be bangin strippers all weekend....

Oh and I forgot, there was a request:

Whoa, new can has been opened....

BBR, how long have you been in SF? Seriously.

Not to call you out, but read your post again. You just compared OC/Isla Vista bimbos to SF Art school chicks. The way I see it, the only difference between the two is environment and a bit of silicon induced from that said environment.

I have been here for a while. It is still a city of 7's at best.

Mentally - higher, but then again it that attribute has to make up significantly for the other areas which are lacking.

Tom, saw you snag some good ones from the sidelines! Looking good.

dsx- clean shots, man. I stole them and tried to sell them to SurferRag using my name, but they've seen my pics and didn't believe they were mine!

George W.- That list was SO friggin' funny I was giggling out loud. And, I'm the only closet republican left in SF (but I'm sick of the radical right). Why is it the far right hates creativity and expression while the far left hates authority and responsibility? Is there no room for we semi-responsible professionals who still get drunk and howl at the moon?

What do you call a hot chick in San Francisco?

- Heavily bundled
- Menopausal

Just kidding, Sharky. I'm married to a hot chick in San Francisco.

Posted by: Bruce at June 10, 2004 02:42 PM

yeah bruce.. hang in homie..

I don't know why people complain about the ladies in SF.. I guess it's probably because people generally complain about the ladies wherever they are (unless in Rio or NYC).

Kaiser - your "theory of sevens" is interesting.. The following would be my SF ratings in the following categories

ladies - 9
surf - 7 (santa cruz gets a 9, New Jersey a 3)
cultural happenings - 10
food - 8
physical beauty - 10
weather - 9
affordability - 1
vibe - 9

Posted by: e at June 10, 2004 02:53 PM

i've been here 3 years and i lived in santa barbara/IV for 5, and i easily rate SF higher. the chicks are prettier, smarter and just plain cooler.

also, i'm not talking about percentages here, i'm talking shear numbers. there's a higher percentage of hot chicks in santa barbara or santa cruz or san diego, but the shear number of hot chicks in SF is greater. and if you go to the right bars they all seem to congregate together. and i'm not telling where.

Great vibe: All the derels on that one particular block of Noriega street. You know who you are.

Finest females: 1. Montreal. 2. New Orleans 3. Tifton, Georgia. (I have no idea why. But they grow 'em fine there.)

Pet peeves: Republicans. Greedheads. People who paddle through the break.

Fave music: Mermen. Ventures. Kill Bill soundtrack. Ludwig Van "Money-B" Beethoven. James Brown. Otis Redding.

Body part: Her neck, just below her ear, where you can smell not only her skin, but her hair.

cdub - I noticed the Yater Surftech this morning. There was also Gioni from PacificWaverider on another RFS board - he wears a visor-less hood, and is a really big guy, so easy to spot.

The way I see it, having a Yater is a true badge of honor. If you have one from his Santa Barbara shop, people will stop to ask you about it, just because it is so cool. The Yater Surftech inspires no such attention. Although Yater may still be Yater, when it comes on a Surftech, the cool factor drops a bit. At least that's my impression. I feel pretty much the same about any big name shaper - their shop's work is cool, but their Surftech work is boring.

BTW, ASD is going under in a few months. No more Roe Sham Beau glassing or ASD/Bob Miller boards.

7s, weather, surf, women, nightlife

pet peeves: global surf media. Never read it, don't see the point, our surf world is invisible to them, focussed on 13 yr olds, and yet somehow Andy Irons is a hero to half the trannies here.

Where's the love for PeeWee? Here's a homework lesson for you ASP/World Tour fans. Figure out who PeeWee is, and what he's done.

the word of the day is: blakestah!!!

Posted by: pee wee at June 10, 2004 03:22 PM

Posted by: blakestah at June 10, 2004 03:24 PM

book: Book of Five Rings - Miyamoto Musashi, Cradle to Cradle, William McDonough, Micheal Brungart, the fountainhead, ayn rand.
Surfing: flexiblity, barrell time
good vibes: E, niceness peeps, my daughter, old grom days crew, ss sharkbait (never met wouldn't know from "Jane" but her words say it all)
Beauty is within and can be found everywhere with open eyes.
Peeves: verbal and physical violence, bad drivers, narrow minds, people surfing places they don't have the skills for....yet.
current Music: Junior Brown (e, amazing guitarist), the Darkness, the vines, ali farka tourre.
body part: small of the back, nose, Feet.

Kate Bosworth was the real deal.

And I don't know who PeeWee is but Hell Raiser and Fandangals surf circles around him.

Posted by: Kaiser at June 10, 2004 04:08 PM

I don't know who hell raiser or fandangals is but I have heard it stated that Pee Wee and Dick Keating are the best surfers to come from North of Santa Cruz.

ouch, just lost an hour of productivity as i laughed so hard i inhaled my keyboard at the thought that SF has a higher sheer quantity of hot chicks than san diego, had to go get 'er removed from the ol' sinuses!

to that note, there are beautiful women everywhere, it's just a matter of what you consider beautiful. one man's heifer makes another man feel like hefner.

Posted by: j at June 10, 2004 04:30 PM

my $0.02 on today's list (since i missed yesterday).

women: brazil (hands down the most gorgeous i've encountered in my many travels), asia (pick a country), eastern europe (their accents kill)

what was the rest of the list?!?

Posted by: caveman at June 10, 2004 04:33 PM

yeah you're prolly right about SD, i forget how huge that place is.

Posted by: bbr at June 10, 2004 04:40 PM

Least sexiest body part: the forehead on that "party girl" that is bigger than the rest of her face. Move that hairline down a foot or so, babe, and you'll be doing ok.

Posted by: luke at June 10, 2004 04:40 PM

You guys on this site must
1. smoke lots of pot
2. never leave the country
3. think that the Jetty is a "10"

to think that norcal chicks are hot

(the one that are hot are transplants anyways)

Posted by: at June 10, 2004 04:43 PM

bad news, the one that is hot is my ex- and she leaves the country tomorrow!! doh.

Posted by: j at June 10, 2004 04:48 PM

SF chicks are like linda mar
-they may look OK from a distance but end up being mediocre, soft, mushy rides

Good from far.... but far from good!

Surf.. music.. hangin' with the homies'.. when you're not lookin' for it some cutie will come into your vision and knock your socks off.

hahaha, i know man, lemme tell you the single life has been great - sometimes you forget how much you sacrifice when you're in a relationship, being single lets you see that, but also shows you how much you gain.

not sure if this is kosher for the board as it definitely borders on promotion (i have no affiliation with the place), if not e please remove, but my buddy is dj'ing at some place called ganesh (ganeshworldbeats.com). it's his first gig in the city, should be pretty cool, doing a mix of ragga/jungle/dnb. never been to the place so i can't vouche for it, but he takes the decks at midnight or so. from the website sounds a lot like 'the red sea' in portland for those who migrated south. anyways, just another thursday nite idea for anybody looking for something to do.

Peewee is perhaps the best OB outer bar surfer ever. Last winter, we had a coupla 10@14-17 swells from 260 degrees. The kind that are big and unruly and rip from south to north like crazy. Fewer than five people surfed them. Peewee paddled out alone, grabbed a few waves, and went home.

One of the two swells was the one in which Alex grabbed his 25 ft HWN huge bomb at Mavericks. And Peewee paddled out and surfed OB.

Peewee is now 53 years old. He's been doing it since his teens.

Posted by: blakestah at June 10, 2004 07:46 PM

Best writing I have ever read about surfing happens to be a piece on OB:

"Playing Doc's Games" by William Finnegan- published in The New Yorker, (vol 68 #27 August 24, 1992 pg 34-59 with the second part in vol 68 #28 August 31,1992 pg 39-58)

Centered around early AM wake-up calls from "Doc" Renneker, Pee Wee has his place in it as well. Very smart, check it out if you can..

would like to update yesterday's pad from north pb to leucadia

great books (rumi, plato's dialogues, another roadside attraction, monkeywrench gang, moyers, the alchemist, so many!)

Aspect of your surfing you most want to improve (air)

Surfer(s) with great vibes (air, most of the pb posse, dale webster)

Country producing the finest females? (venezuela, no contest)

pet-peeves (neocon propaganda, surfless weeks, the midwest)

current fave bands (musicians) (coltrane, silvio rodriguez, ozomatli, marley)

most underrated but sexy body-part (defined line between shoulder and bicep on surfer girls)

"every tree blows differently in the breeze, but as they sway, they are connected at the roots."
