beunos dias amigos. Ambitious plans to wake at 4am and jettison down to north santa cruz county flushed my mind last night.. but.. this morning things didn't exactly work out and i ended up getting up at the wimpy hour of 5:15.. not enough time for the full mission.. so instead embarked on the customary bay-area surf cruise.
Some signs of the meager south swell showed at Sloat. Diminutive, crumbling chest-high sets. You could see the distinctive bands of groundswell energy coming from the south. The wind caressed from the WSW but didn't ruin conditions. the lack of swell ruined conditions. Past P-town where there were a few spirited early morning linda mar hooligans. I didn't see any rides.
Montara looked borderline doable, and on my way back there were a few carloads of takers gearing up for a session. It looked onshore and poorly shaped, but.. within range.
then down to EGPimp's spot, where we (Kaiser and I) thought there might be signs of the swell showing. One wave every 10 minutes softly peeled along. chest-high at best. 6 or 7 guys sat at the peak waiting. waiting. waiting. One shortboarder nabbed a glassy, tapering wall that he milked for juice as best he could, draining the proverbial utter of the wave of all its lactic energy. But.. flatness pervaded the zone and it wasn't quite enough to break my re-virginized Nor-Cal cold-water seal. Instead scones and convo..
soo.. Many of you may have noticed the brief but steamy(?) little foray into soft pornography i imbibed in yesterday. Longtime readers know that it's a bit unusual and, to be honest, i'm not exactly sure what inspired it. It began as a tongue-in-cheek attempt to go haywire with the whole reef-girl-butt fantasy and just kind-of spiralled from there. But... i think that the lightheartedness wasn't shared by all readers and many out there were either mildly or majorly insulted and bummed by that portrayal of women. I want to apologize to any and all of you who felt slighted or disappointed. We've run the full gamut here at niceness of either showing photos of faceless, buxomed, bikini-clad lust-objects to singing vigorous praises to all the real ladies in our lives who we love, cherish and respect. A good friend brought it to my attention that portraying women as i did yesterday contributes to the view of women as weak sexual objects, second class citizens. Hearing that makes me feel so shitty. As a white american man it's sometimes difficult to instinctively empathize with those being descriminated against. Imagine existing as a strikingly beautiful women. Your day to day encounters are constantly skewed because of your beauty. Men on the street leer and whistle. Men in the office befriend with hidden agendas. Women sneer and vibe with competitive undertones. Everything gets shaded by the fact that you're a beautiful women. That sucks. TV, advertising, hollywood, music, etc. are hyper-saturated with images of women as sex-object. Our modern conception of women as intellectual/spiritual equals has only reached widespread acceptance in the last 50-or-so years. Strong, capable, empowered women continue to have to prove themselves above and beyond the fold in the public sphere in order to keep beating back the ubiquitous portrayal of women as sex. women as meak. women as submissive. It's a constant battle between the onslaught of saliscious, dripping, eye-candy, pornographic women-as-object media fantasy and the real life certainty of women as brilliant, women as capable, women as inspired, women as radiant. women as human.
Sometimes it's tough being a modern man, forced to quell the expression of raw, primal imaginings. But I think it's hard for a modern women too, who want to feel sexy, who want to BE sexy, but who don't want to perpetual or feed into the gross, festering, over-sexed media-stew of modern america..
anyway.. the ladies rock. we all know it. How nice does it feel to snuggle up with your hunny and just get deep about what you're feeling, what your thinking. Women are generally open and accepting of the whole range of emotions. They seem to posess some instinctive understanding of the underbelly of life. they see connections and meanings that men glance over or don't notice. Vent to your lady about when so-and-so slighted you at work or whatever and most likely she'll soothe your wounded pride with wise observations about the human condition.
soo.. All you fellas out there who are lucky enough to have the companionship of a fine, strong, loving women. Appreciate her! hook her up! make her feel loved, not just sexy. Let her know that you appreciate her for her style, for her mind, for her warmth. Make her breakfast tomorrow morning and pick up her favorite magazine. give her some morning kisses and let her know that she's the bomb.

EG, I sided with you this morning and invaded your surf locale but it didn't offer me much. Likewise, i gotta side w/ ya again on this one...
I am sure the ratio of "surf dude" to "surf dudette" is about 90:10 here in E-Land if not greater. With that being said, I VIOLATE and EXPOSE the womenly figure more then most (Dano made me do it...and I'm sticking to it)up in here. And I am sure that at times some of the wahine-kind may take offense to these actions. However, I gotta claim that I love a women's figure and the imagery of it. Sorry! Call it animal instinct, call it whatever. In fact, I can't think of many natural forms that are more beautiful.
Maybe an empty, barreling wave at Chopes... maybe the imagery of the red sun setting magnificantly below the horizon to the southwest of Bali...
Bottomline: women are wonderful, they should be celebrated! At the same time, our society does leverage the "sexy" side of women to exploit certain behaviors and thoughts out of all of us. However, I don't think much of that vibe is shed from you nor the activity that goes on here at XXX E-Land.
I have learned a good lesson from this! I will change my ways and clean up my act for the better-ment of us all....
From now on, I will post only fruits and vegetables.....

Posted by: Friend #1 at May 21, 2004 10:38 AMi used to get all bent out of shape about women being constantly objectified. i even wrote surfline in protest a few years ago when they first started using those reef ads as the background while the cam was coming up. i didn't feel like i should have to look at that when i was just trying to check the surf and decide which spot to hit. they wrote me back basically saying, tough luck, sex sells. and it's true. you can get all upset about it and maybe you should, but eventually, i think you have to let go. or, as my boss, sam, at falafel of santa cruz, used to say "it's hard to get any work done with a clinched fist." i don't feel like i am theoretically any less of a feminist and i certainly am not fine with the havoc wreaked on the self-esteem of women and girls by the constant objectification of women and portrayal of unrealistic beauty images. but, for whatever reason, i don't get angry and upset anymore by those images. plus they're pretty. so basically, i agree with egp, keep pimpin.

New topic: anyone know much about Bojorquez shapes? methinks he might be the same guy as Steve Krajewski, shaping out of socal. anyways i just picked up a super-sweet egg shaped by him (her?), i rode it for the first times yesterday and this morning in total crap surf and had far too much fun. Its called a Malibu Clasic, 7'6", 19" wide and 17" at the nose, almost no rocker, single fin with a well-rounded square-ish tail. Its really thin, paddles pretty quick (really quick compared to my 6'4") but rides super loose and fast, like a small board. and though i haven;t taken it out in good noseriding surf, i think it will noserider well. so stoked....but curious if anyone knows anything about the shaper- i got it used and didn;t talk to the seller.

e - thought provoking post this morn, altho t.w.'s post brings up an interesting side thought. the argument for feeling bad for attractive women does have a hint of the 'feel bad for multi-million dollar athlete' thing going for it. i've been fortunate to have dated a ridiculously attractive woman before and it's amazing how much easier life is for them!

OB: I don't know where you rippers were but Klooless Kook, the seal, and I were DOMINATING the middle beach. Deceptively long skunky lulls with gutless waist-highs, but the south is showing, oh yes. Evident in 5-6 foot super peaky, thick lumped-up closeouts that would thump over in sections. We travelled about 4 blocks, I got nailed on a duckdive and instead of stalling got ripped northwards, underwater, for about 1/2 a block. Grey, fiddly onshores and extremely bumpy water - couldn't even ride the whitewash . It's noticeably shrinking now w/incoming tide, overall it's as fickle as it gets. Had fun, but one of the most unworkable sessions I've encountered 'round these parts. Some tempting southy, bumpy nuggets were in sight and might return, but getting out and then STAYING IN PLACE is damn near impossible. Just give in to the force. Shoutout to KK for nailing a super steep 5-6 foot closeout drop, breaking the leash, tying it back on, and paddling out for more .

It worked well for me in fast hollow surf but was slow on mushhy waves, so i sold it. I'd rather ride a short board in fast waves and aLB in the mushy small stuff. I'm a big guy so it'll probably work great fro you in small stuff seeing you ride a 6'4", my shortboard is a 6'10". Bojorquez is a 70's legend from LA county, and the boards are replicas, pimented resin, Greenough flex fin. Sweet board.

Thanks to Kaiser and the whole niceness crew for getting me thinking about eggs in the first place a couple of weeks ago...now i've gone from surf withdrawl pain to the joy of a new, totally interesting board!

Anyway, guys are going to be (if not already) all f'ed up. We've got Rogaine, Viagra, liposuction, low-carb beer, Men's Health, etc., etc. Getting close to even stevens.
Surf was on with lulls in parts south of SF today. However, I too am wishing for the end of April. Oh, and I made Kaiser do it.

Very good call IMHO. Now California is pretty much last place in terms of a "surfing as a sport" infrastructure. I sure hope Taylor Knox or Tim Curran can win the WCT for Cali cause the ozzies and hawaiian's are gonna be going off.

it's not respecting a woman if you're licking your lips over a headless ass or some frame-cropped tit. it's also BS that models in mass media are born with a "talent." sorry, Reality Check...it's called airbrushing, silicon, anorexia and a styling team. i don't mean to beat the horse, but i had to be sure you didn't actually think those chicas were real.
and comparing them to layne IS insulting.
the most beautiful people i've ever seen are people in context. men and women. there are lots of them at the beach, but they actually seem to be everywhere. having one of your own...well, that's like a perpetually empty point at sunrise, peeling for miles. There is such a difference between open sensuality/erotica and pornography. One is incredibly three dimensional, one is pretty boring. Immersing ourselves in waves, actually being out in the elements, surrounded, is utterly sensual and you just used it perfectly as a metaphor in contrasting the two, the airbrush vs the dazzlingly "in context."

Thanks for not showing my face on that torso shot. I'm kinda shy about those things. That gas mask thing is funny. It reminds me of taking spacey huge hits through a gas mask converted into a power pipe. The hose that came out of the mask had a bowl fitted to the end of it. Killer hits!

That's the most frustrating bit. Sex sells, but until you open up a Transworld or Surflife or ANYTHING and feel vulnerable- actually vulnerable in the mere act of opening a magazine, I don't think you'll really understand where us offended females are coming from. The reef girls are the way we're depicted as surfers, and that gets me yelled at in the lineup. After all this hype about women's surfing, am I really still defined by a nice ass who doesn't know how to surf?
Anyway, just had to comment, and thanks again E for the well-written comments!! It's so refreshing to read such things written by a 'white American man.'
