bumpy.. morning sickness?
A gorgeous morning.. but.. the waves weren't quite feelin' it. 5ft 14sec on the SF buoy, no wind and some explosively vibrant sunshine might make your think the surf is good... but.. It was pretty topsy/turvy out there this morning. Chunky head-high mounds would show themselves here and there, but you'd have to seek them out amidst the mine-field of sulking, disquieted ocean. Really choppy and messy, take a bit of dramamine before paddling out if ya don't have your sea legs. Even though it looked easy and mellow from the beach, I counted 32 duckdives before getting outside and was feeling like i wanted to take a break from surfing... until i hooked into a few good ones.. then, of course, i was singin' sweet soliloquies to our seductive mistress OB... saying.. "how could i have forsaken thee for but a few violent smashings at your hand. You continue to nourish and suckle, and i thank thee for your section-al healing." ... in the form of a handful of dope, racing, chunkified down-the-line sections. One happened on a walling right.. took off and enjoyed some speed along the bowling, conglomerating section.. then it looked like the wall was going to close out in front of me but i pumped for speed and then kind-of steered up and floated along the crashing section.. then back into the clear, unbroken wave for some more pumps and mellow carves. fun.. Then my last wave was a left that opened itself nicely for a few mild hacks off the top. I also enjoyed a hein wipe-out where i tried to backdoor a peak but instead got slingshotted with the lip and cracked the water below with my head.. felt like smashing into concrete and i could feel my jaw rattle around on impact.. then, of course, i got sucked around the rinse cycle and then pummelled by the next two waves.. yay!!

bands and open jam sessions. kegs, etc. weather forcast is for continued warmth so it will be inside, outside and of course the jamming will be in the basement. band is a well known professional outfit from San Francisco so the music will be top notch.
best to bring an extra 6 pack as we expect quite a crowd and kegs will run dry. peak action prolly from 10-1 a.m. so stop in and feel free to bring friends.

Even seeing some waves kinda hitting the outer bars. Still. Plenty good enough for the unemployed or sick or long lunch crew spattered about. More frequent but crunchier head highs. Sunny, freaky, global warming.
late afternoon prediction: if anyone spies what appears to be a couple of thrashing seals, it is not, repeat, NOT an actual shark attack. My neighbor just got off the 6 month injured list same time as me so we're probably hobbling out together. Cheers...!

Posted by: e at March 17, 2004 11:51 AMJust got back from a beer fest in Carlsbad and a couple days of work in HB. Too busy to surf while down south--D'oh! Typical SF-esque weather down there too. Got a nice poker sesh in at the Bicycle Casino though.
Took out the infamous Super Schlongy this morning for a quickie solo sesh someplace south of Lindy. One peak was working with chest-to-head high mushburgers. Got a few nice rides and got worked a few times. Bummed to get out post-sesh and discover that on a particularly heinous wipeout, the leash-cord sliced through Super Schlongy's tail right next to the stringer. This is the second time that's happened.

The string should not be any longer than (less than actually) the rail in any direction. The leash has a rail gaurd, the thick black velcro thing that the string ties onto. Set it up so the rail gaurd is at least 1 inch inside the rail line on the sides and/or back-which ever is shortest.

bolted home after work last night to get in a quick sesh, picked up my board and decided to pull a quick tube(hows that for slang). in my frenzied state i put my key in my wetsuit pocket and bolted into the water. basically i left my drivers side door wide open for my whole session, walet on floorboard in plain sight. I get out of the water, see my doors open freak out and than releived that everything is intact. hows that for some reverse psycology?
i am not proud of this, but if your ever in the lot and see a black ford ranger with the door wide open could you please close it and lock it for me?

Posted by: bagel at March 17, 2004 03:05 PMnice one bagel.. i was also trying to get a surf in post-work yesterday but i came downstairs from my office at around 5:45, ready to fucking sprint my arse home on my bike.. when i noticed my bike-tire was completely flat.. soo.. i was all dejected and bummed.. i walked to the MUNI station and randomly immediately an N-Judah comes through.. no snags all the way home so i'm walking in my door around 6:20 with a wee bit o' sunlight remaining.. The brown turd is temporarily out of commission with another ding but i likewise took a phat bong ripper.. then grabbed the ol' green machine and ran down the street to the beach. In my stony-balony state i forgot my leash so ended up surfing without one for four waves before eventually losing my board and having to swim all the friggin way in. At that point it was dark so i called it a sesh. It's so hard to remember that you're not wearing a leash when you're not wearing one. Hat's off to those old school pre-leash surfers.
I think I remember loon leaving his door open for an entire sesh one time??

speaking of which, an unfulfilling morning session and this crazy weather (along with knowing that i would not be able to surf today) left me with the uncontrollable urge to go back out for the evening session yesterday. brought my 9'0" and had a blast on the south end, slipping into small mercury-smooth peeling lines smooth in the fading light. i inadvertently added another new move to my longboard repertoire - a pigdog tail slide. i was riding fully parallel on this right, with my hand on the rail leaning forward trying to keep up with this quickly forming mini-wall, and suddenly i was sliding down the face, my back end loose & elevated (does that count?). i held it steady for a sec, leaned back, then stood, and then somehow managed to make a slight turn up the shoulder and back down and start trimming again without getting pitched. sweet!

That's for the leash advice, Dennis. Never really thought about it but now that you mention it, the string is a bit longer than the distance between the leash plug and the tail. I'll definitely remember to shorten the string after I fix the gash. Cheers!

Tide might just be catchbreak enough to unfloat a couple manana really manana. Least I don't have to worry about what it's really doing paddling into grey predawn. They're calling this weather pretty alltime. Oops just jinxed it - lucky if it doesn't blow 20.

If the ride description on my fins page sounds desireable to anyone, give the rental a try, and you'll find it works as described.
