giant, polluted, good waves later

I meant to walk down to the beach and check it this morning but the pouring rain and my beckoning guitar kept me indoors. From the N-judah i could see mammoth, tumultuous white-water walls creeping toward shore. It looked ominous. The winds, however, are pretty light right now (2mph from the west). There is going to be a deep low tide this afternoon so if you don't mind polluted water and crowds you should be able to score some insane waves at the end of the day. It's 16ft 15seconds at the SF buoy at 10am. Now that i look at some websites (wetsand) the winds are predicted to blow out of the NW later on.. sooo santa cruz town, although potentially filled with hepatitus and the such, should offer some reeling, roping, groping point-break succulence. maybe the jetty too? though obviously not as succulent.

anybody have any book recommendations (not necessarily surf related)? especially about central america?

If anybody has any favorite posts or comments from niceness past send em' over to me. For example if you really liked Sharkbait's report from Oct 2003 or something? or you liked when matt yellow board talked about the secret spot he surfed solo last summer.

two days no surf.. the jones begins!!

shout out to the Jeff up in oregon! dude.. i want to cruise up there soon

shout out to Carter James Rowe - who will most likely be shredding it up soon around the streets of southampton and ivyland.

shout out to Dr. Deni - psyched for your visit.. planning a little soiree at my house for the occasion..

e...what i'm most impressed by is the fact that when you woke up, heard the rain, and decided not to surf it was your GUITAR beckoning! for me, it's always pillow point that beckons. nice work moto'ing for a dawnie musical sesh.

Posted by: ck at February 3, 2004 10:40 AM

bbr - wild pics!

My eldest called me this morning, telling me about the huge buoy reports. I think he might've been trying to get me to bail on work and head out with him to a certain localized spot that should be huge today. Unfortunately (read: luckily) my desk is swamped with work and I have something very important to do later ... now if I could just recall (read: invent) what that was ...

Seriously, I'm not sure anywhere in our immediate area is surfable today.

on that last photo on today's main page - that must be Laird, because who else would pick a time like that for a cutback?

e - Favorite all-time exchange was the one with Kaiser's proclamation on "M_ B___ T_B". This and the surrounding discussion was fantastic....still makes my grin from ear-to-ear!

Is there a way to do a search of the archives instead of poking into each day?

Posted by: Jack at February 3, 2004 12:23 PM

ha ha.. nice jack.. yeah.. bathtub secret spots. as of now there is no way to search within e's surf report. I think on the newest version of moveable type bloggin software you can do that.. i haven't really explored it.. hrrmmm..

Lemme look into search on E's. We're running the latest version of Movable Type, but we need to modify the display template to include a search box in the side nav.

Posted by: mwsf at February 3, 2004 12:47 PM

Search lives... Check out the bottom of the side nav on the main page.

mwsf.. you da man!

in case y'all don't know. MWSF is niceness.org's resident tech wizard. He's been super kind enough to host niceness.org on a linux box at his house, over a dsl line for the last year or two. So.. all of our activity in essence slows his experience down at home. Without MWSF there would be no e's surf report in it's current version. I built this old rickety cms a few years a ago which allowed me to post a report easily to the web.. but there was no comments or anything schnazzy like that, just an archive. Then my dsl provider went bankrupt and shut down, then my linux box had a hernia and i still haven't recovered the thing because i'm basically a kook techy. Luckily MWSF swooped in and rescued the whole operation. soo.. he's the real undergound hero and solely responsible for the resurrection of the surf report.
go mwsf, go mwsf, go!

Bush's budget reduces spending on environment, boosts military - Yayyy!! More cluster bombs, less wilderness!! vote for bush! More nuclear weapons triggers, less teachers!!! yayy!! vote republican!!

Posted by: e at February 3, 2004 01:22 PM

yeah, the tub gets my vote--especially the part about tubs v. showers...ck's trip to pancake point on one particularly uninspired morning had me laughing....i think there was a rising tide of griddle chefs involved...?...and the day e got busted at FP in march 03, just after or just as GW was invading Iraq. i can't remember the details, but it was a good post.

oh, and thanks mwsf!! here's to the unsung heroes!

friday surf? friday surf! i remain hopeful.

had the day off yesterday. checked rockaway and ended up at "steamer lane" when i pulled up it was total victory at sea conditions but looking better than rockaway. i found it kind of weird that there was not 1 person out, i thought that was pretty inviting..i saw a guy with his suit on getting ready to go out and i figured i would join him he was in before me and paddled pretty far outside where it looked to be more disorginaized and windy. i stayed a little inside pretty much paralel to the light house had a great time head high maybe a little over head stormy waves with a few long walled up gems, another longboard guy came out after about 30 minutes, and we shared waves for a while..no more that 3 other guys out for 2 hours..when i left there were about 10 guys out..it was great fun..had to share, yeah santa cruz!

ive alwayse liked the contrevertial posts..those are alwayse fun to read..

Props to MWSF! I think that Christian's post where he coined the term "fuzzy blankets" is a keeper... as is his post about going out in DOH OB in the fog without even being able to see the outside and coming back to the parking lot like the messiah.

P.S. Oh, and lots and lots of pics that rock. Too many to name.

mwsf...thanks for all the work behind the scenes!

e...i have too many fav postings/comments to mention even a small portion of 'em, but one that stands out clearly in my head is the discussion of the "old skool" SF surf scene; i.e., the history of our beloved local breaks (i think that Jimmie, Friend #1, and Blakestah were the primary contributors). another is that recap that you wrote one non-surf (i think?) day that summarized a long prior day of postings that included Blakestah's condemnation of driving for surf (sorry for the vague description). oh...one final one that jumps out was the story from one niceness head (sorry...i can't remember who) of going out at VFers on 12/17 ("Bid Wednesday") that culminated in pulling the whitewhater ripcord and flying on his belly to the beach "like a dog with his tail between his legs being chased by the vacuum". i thought that account was hilarious and that it was a great description of the beating the beach can deliver.

Posted by: ck at February 3, 2004 03:36 PM

d'oh!...that should read "Big Wednesday"...not "Bid Wednesday". sowry, kant tipe. ; )

Get the fuck out of here? Towing in? Could you not paddle out there or was it all f'd up.

A few feet over head at the most.
8 guys in the water.
Not super clean but fun.
Towing-in.

Posted by: olive at February 3, 2004 04:18 PM

local guys or santa cruz guys?

Posted by: question... at February 3, 2004 04:32 PM

that sounds kinda whack.
i don't think it would ever be necessary at either of those spots unless maybe a 25ft 20sec NW at dm? but..still.. even that is paddleable with a gun. (not that i'm doing it).

I don't think you should be towing if there are any paddlers out there making waves.

Posted by: e at February 3, 2004 04:32 PM

Dude TOW-IN rulez....i just got me a jetski on sunday realizing the surf was gonna get huge. so today i grabbed a local homeless dude and asked if he knew what a jetski was and he replied Laird Bro! man lets ROCK! so we drove down to crissy field 4x4ed over the parking lot and launched that bad boy, he was flining me into the most killer chest high sets at FPs you'd ever seen. MAN it was koool!

Posted by: dsx at February 3, 2004 04:38 PM

wow, people watch to much tv..ill blame it on that kqed special about big waves that was on after the super bowl..(cool show by the way)

Tow-In within the Golden Gate Recreation Area!!!!!!!??????????
THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW AGAINST IT!!!!!!
Wait a minute, isn't there?
Drove past the beach about 5:30pm - looked like the swell dropped a bit - but still a boiling cauldron.

UFO report number 4. This from a rider who rode earlier prototypes, and whose criticism led to the last large mechanism change in the UFO.

Now very stable on the drops - the easy drive bottom turn is gone a little, but cutbacks, lip smacks etc, are all there. Really looking forward to trying it on an overhead beach day. Noticed the balance point is in the middler - it is a little different in feel that way.

That makes 4 testers who all wanted more after the first test day. :)

Can't wait to hear the first ride reports from the samples I'm sending out.

Central American must read:

Lonely Planet are the most reliable travel books I've found for the region.

Oliver Stone's Movie Salvador.

Sorry for stating the obvious, but why would someone even try towing in at such a spot?? Seems silly really. or maybe just lazy.

The guy should have been there "practicing" on the high tide when big water was pushing through and no paddlers. Anyways, it looks like it has started...

Posted by: sf at February 4, 2004 07:52 AM

Towing in to surfing is like motocross riding to bicycling.

You can ride the same stuff with more power and speed and control. You can also ride more treacherous stuff. That doesn't mean it isn't fun on stuff you used to paddle into. It is. You'll get 10 times as many rides per hour, and be able to perform a lot better on each ride.

That is the reality of tow-ins. It is vastly superior in wave count and performance per wave. People like that.

Posted by: blakestah at February 4, 2004 08:56 AM

To take blakestah's analogy a step further - like motocross riding, tow-in surfing has a marked increased environmental and noise pollution impact in the areas it is practiced. Because of that, IMHO, it should be regulated.
Believe me, I have great admiration for some of the stuff surfers like Kalama and Laird have done. However, I once saw them in a piece of video on some Hawaiian travel show: they were racing around on PWCs, jamming over coastal rock formations as the surge would wash over them - heedless of mussels, anenomes, starfish, etc. It was like watching a bunch maniacs on dirtbikes ripping up a meadow of wildflowers.

Posted by: Jimmie at February 4, 2004 11:20 AM

I just want to say that surfing is by far the greatest sport that i have ever done. I can't wait until i go and tow into my first wave and feel the adrenaline rush of something like that!! I think that it is gunna be the greatest thing ever!!!!!
