weekend update
Friday afternoon get home from work, look at the surf... ahh.. shitty, windy and stormy.
Have a few beers and play music.
It rains some. Then the weather shifts around.
Bagel and i drive over to Hockey Haven and check the beach on the way.
Grag! What the?!?!
Blissful, glassy south-swell lines. Beautiful. Argh!
Too late to make it happen. Fun to watch though.
Saw some barrels and some airs.
Saturday morn saw some niceness peelers.
Hordes of folks in little pods. The rest of the coast empty.
Surfables.
Saturday night i went to The Coalition of the Willing show at the Independent.
My friend is a bit of a mover/shaker in the music world and got us VIP passes.
The band killed it all night. Groovy, a-synchronous, bad-ass improvisational mastery.
Charlie Hunter on a six-string, sounding like he's played it all his life.
Skerik adding the extra oomph to everthing and also throwing down some soulful solos.
Happy, fun-loving vibes on stage. Refreshing.
During set-break my friend took me to smoke a bone with some of his peeps.
Turns out the keyboardist from the band was among them.
Marco Benevento plays keys in a jam-band called the Benevento-Russo duo.
They're getting pretty huge in the jam circuit.
He was a character; animated and psyched.
Hot girlfriend.
Talking, gesticulating, yelling, carrying-on.
Very friendly.
It turns out that Trey Anastasio asked him and the other guy in his duo to record an album and tour with Trey and Mike Gordon from Phish.
Trey recently sent him a CD with 14 songs to learn.
This guy is probably 24 years old, if that, and actually toured with Phish, as a fan.
Now he's in the band.
Now he'll be in a pimping tour-bus.
Playing huge venues.
Wahines begging for it.
Whatever party-favors he likes.
Playing music all night every night with a total legend.
He was frothing about it, saying, "I'm going on tour! for real!"
Dude is psyched.
Sunday awoke to tasty rippables.
Good to catch a few with Kaiser.
Then walked over to catch the tail-end of Bay to Breakers.
Holy mother of all that is drunken.
Legions of googly-eyed inebriated revelers.
Beer-soaked, pimple-covered, exposed boobies.
The requisite flabby 40-yr-old naked men.
Pissing and fighting.
Girls looking hot in their pink bob wigs.
Team of Hulkamaniacs.
Team of Double-Dare participants.
Team of dodge-ballers.
Bikinis.
Shenanigans.
Guys dressed in Bud-light boxes.
People trashing the park.
People swimming in the toy sailboat lake.
Seriously - "hide the children!"
Went to see the Mermen at Park Chalet but instead my friend Nathan's band was playing.
Chill dub/reggae style.
Then is started fucking pouring!
Later the surf got good.
Real good.
Tapering walls.
Multiple maneuvers.
Evening glass-off.
Thank you Huey!

the sign-in code for the comments is still screwy! Sorry to all that have been annoyed or discouraged by it. Hopefully today or tomorrow i'll have some time to get in there and figure it out. Thanks again for your patience. Eventually you should have to only sign-in once, then a cookie should be set on your machine so you'll never have to sign in again!! hopefully.

i like surfing. go freddy p!
Posted by: steamwandJust back from a little road trip. Let's see.. Friend got arrested. During a seperate incident, 7 cops pulled us out of the 30 ft. RV with guns drawn and searched the thing. 2 minutes after leaving we saw a car directly in front of us flip 2 times and land upside down. Luckily two of my friends are EMTs and took care of the girl who miraculously got out UNTOUCHED. I got sprayed by a skunk. Stayed intoxicated for nearly 120 hours straight. Surfed some fun out-of-the-way beach breaks in SLO and SB. I also found out the only way to drink a beer is to drink a keystone light at room temperature. Try it, you may like it.
All in all, a great time. Always nice to explore our coast.
Posted by: ianStrung 3 days of surf together around here for the first time in ages! What a shitty surf season it has been. the last few days have offered some opportunities.
For those of you that were tripping out on the vessel that looked like it was going to sink at Sloat yesterday mid-morning, check below.
http://www.spn.usace.army.mil/newsrelease/newsrelease051906.html
I have never seen all the sand erode away from the Sloat area like it has this year. Not only can you see the pillars for an old pier-like structure but you can see a rusted old sewage pipe exposed at low-tide. Also, along the bank below the main sloat lot, a bunch of concrete chunks are exposed due to the lack of sand there.
This year has been f'd up for sure.

Posted by: KaiserHooray, glorious weekend surf! I forgot what actual waveriding was until Saturday. Also reminded of thread-the-needle games w/fishermen this DP. Fark!
That dredging boat was so close to shore yesterday, you could have paddled out on it. Neighbor called, joking about the shipwreck out front.
Ian, did you fall in some drunken karmic vortex or something? Good grief
Posted by: s.s. sharkbaitDamn Ian! from a world tour to a drunken california coasline trip. you know how to live! so jealous.
Posted by: seascumanyone know what is up with the globe fiji site? says it's on and 6-8 ft, which should be awesome, but there's no live feed. maybe it just has not started yet? i hope because AI's in the first heat of round two.
-your pro-ho
saturday was ridiculous and i told myself that my session could get me through being dry for a while but the addiction is too strong. after reading e's post on his having surfed sunday, too, i am frothing once again. ahhh.
sharkbait, we should surf together sometime soon. i has been too long.
Posted by: steamwandHooray for surboard riding!
Posted by: kloohuh well kaiser that's an interesting one.
I wonder what effect this is going to have on the surf over the long run. hopefully a good one. I've never seen sloat the way it is now before as well. Well messed up this year - even just comparing to last season.
I'd be very pleased to see the sloat of old back. I used to surf that place non stop - I've hit it only a handfull of times this year tho...
Posted by: ankorsgreetings ya'll!!!!
pretty good weekend of surf.
speaking of music e, mr scofield tore it
Posted by: korewinup friday night with phil and his other
friends. 3 set show. craziness.
sick tube for bobby m...webcast is running at cloudbreak
Posted by: joe fobeing a huge scofield fan, and having a bill stewart board, i figured i logically had to name my board "sco".
sounds like i missed out on some tastiness this weekend. my buddy "still new" tried to talk me into breaking away this weekend and paddling out, but i'm getting ready for open studios. d'oh. (don't wanna hear about it, d.) stupid art. speaking of, if any of y'all happen to be in the east bay any time during the first two weekends in june (3rd/4th and 10th/11th) and want to check out some steel sculpture, stop on by. i'm on the map number I-10 in the west o. for east bay open studios. if you click on the little profile thing next to my name you can see a small sample. so far i only have one surf-themed piece (called heavy left), but i might make one or two more.
Posted by: king james versionKiller weekend! Board riding rules.
Bobby Martinez is the new goofy-footed hero.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7you mean your hero. we are not all fanboys.
Posted by: fanboy criticOn the dredge: It dumped sand south of Sloat 24/7 for 10 days last year. I haven't noticed any improvement to the area for it. The sand bars were strange last year in that area, and the beach erosion seems to worsen. Though I wouldn't be too quick to blame the dumping for it. It was a stormy ass year.
Ian: classic surf trip.
E: Sounds like you had a great weekend too.

Posted by: fanboy criticI wonder who determines what is "beach quality sand". Pointed out that ship to my daughter from our window yesterday.
Good surf returned this weekend. On the dog walk there were two on the peak to the south and one to the north. Suited up and returned to find 5 on both. Opted for the North as it looked a bit more peakie. Stayed on the edge of the current by paddling past the others. Nice to get a few out front before the pros showed up and started hogging the peaks. Then it was off to Major Maintenance day at the Coop Preschool. When I got out there was still only 5 to the south but 20 plus to the north. Oh well.
Posted by: friend #1Sloat used to be good. I got shacked there once. How am I sure? I was DPing and the winter/fall sun was coming in low and intense out of the east/southeast. It was offshore so you couldn’t see shit on the right drops, just golden spray in your eyes. Made the drop, pig-dogged, squinted down the line but just saw sun. I’m blindly screaming down the line hoping I wouldn’t run over someone and BAM! It goes dark. No sun - I’m looking at the underside of a breaking lip. Time frikkin stands still -at least for awhile. The sun comes back and I kick out not knowing what to do. I’m stoked but watch the right I was on continue for about another 75 yards. Oh well.
Yeah, I suck so I remember the three times I’ve gotten tubed and love to talk about them. If you want some more, I got two more stories just like that.
I don’t know what beach quality sand is but I bet there are a bunch of heavy metals and pcbs in that stuff. Is that why there’s that black sand down there some times of the year or is that something else? I love how fine that stuff is. But maybe it’s just a mixture of mercury and lead and my feet are going to fall off in a couple years.
Fri, Sat were awesome, Sun I could have done without. But that’s probably just because I got spoiled the days before.
