Rad post from yesterday:
"Note that if I don't smoke I have lucid dreams."
And that is the nut of it my friend! Pot deprives you of important subconscious activities that take place only during times of level 5 (Delta) REM sleep.
The debate is how important those activities can be. If you delve into it you'll find the scientific and the religious battling it out in this grey zone. Brain activity can be measured but there is little to measure what could potentially be happening in subconscious as we see played out in our dreams.
Are dreams important? Another question open to debate, but I think innately we all know the answer!
-The original Locals believed the sleep time to be more valuable than the waking time.
-Drugs were used at puberty to force the meeting with spirit guides.
-LSD and his friends caused many in a generation to travel to the bitter edge of the meeting between man and the great beyond, sometimes with disastrous results.
I quit the weed after some serious bong time and introspection. I felt a disconnect coming on, my dreams were being robbed from me. Those great ideas, visions, solutions to problems, etc. were vanishing in the pre-dawn light.
The word "dream" is traditionally traced back to an Anglo-Saxon word meaning joy, gladness, or mirth. However, "dream" more likely came from another word (from Sanskrit) meaning deception. A little of both perhaps?

A 17-year-old fulfilling a dream to learn rodeo died after a horse rolled on top of him during his first bucking bronco ride, his family said.
Stuart Mazanec died Wednesday from organ damage, four days after the accident at a weekend rodeo clinic in Byers, about 30 miles east of Denver.
"It was his first and last ride," said his mother, Pam Mazanec.
Stuart Mazanec, a senior at Douglas County High School south of Denver, was trying to get off the bronco after finishing the standard 10-second bareback ride Saturday when his hand got caught in the rigging around the horse's neck, said Jay Brentner, a family friend and rodeo veteran who was at the clinic.
Mazanec tried to run alongside the horse, but the animal staggered, tripped and landed on him. When the horse got up, the teen was hanging limply at its side, Brentner said.
After being taken to a Denver hospital, Mazanec managed to speak despite a broken jaw, his mother said.
"The first thing he told me was, 'Mom, don't cry,'" she said.
By Wednesday, his body had begun to fail, and the family decided to remove life support that night after consulting with doctors and a priest, Pam Mazanec said.
Pat Bohlender-Lowe of the Colorado State High School Rodeo Association said she could recall only one other youth rodeo fatality in the state, a bull-riding accident about 20 years ago.
"People sometimes forget what a rough sport it is," said Brentner. "But for Stuart, the one thing he always wanted to try ended up being the thing that killed him."

Posted by: obro at April 28, 2006 10:52 AMThat's what I have lucid dreams about these days. Freakin' me out.
I used to have recurring dreams about sharks. Mostly I would be checking out a break, and I would see sharks in the water. Usually not a dream of an actual attack. But then again, I never had a dream about actually riding a wave until fairly recently.
I think your shark dreams are probably simbolic. Perhaps you have some anxiety about something else in your life.
I believe that was the case for my dreams as well.

Posted by: at April 28, 2006 11:43 AMMYTH: If I treat a woman well and listen to what she says, she'll stop complaining
TRUTH: Women never stop complaining. For them, it's a sport. Some complain more than others, but none of them will ever stop, any more than one day men will stop discussing football. Men have built civilizations, created law, invented husbandry (that's keeping domestic animals by the way, not marriage; women invented marriage), built skyscrapers, invented cars, washing machines, antibiotics, toilets, computers, and microwave ovens, and generally dragged us out of caves and into condos. Don't kid yourself: men did it all. If it were up to women we'd still be living in caves and dying at 20. I know that men did it all because I know why they did it: they hoped that it would stop women complaining. It didn't.
If you listen to your girlfriend's bitching and try to make everything better, you'll suffer the same fate as all the men who came before: you'll run yourself ragged, and at the end of it all she'll still be bitching. If you ignore all but the most important complaints, she'll bitch about that, too, but you'll feel far better about your life.

Posted by: Senor Humboldt at April 28, 2006 12:59 PMI think the following idea has some merit...it's worth the read. We CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.
If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day” campaign that was going around last April! The oil companies knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Just send this to 10 people and ask them to send to 10, and so on. If everyone did this we could conceivably contact 300 MILLION people within the next 8 days!!!
Posted by: at April 28, 2006 01:20 PMIf you don't know, try this: when you come home at the end of day or whenever. Sit down and let your girl vent, complain or whatever about their day. Ask a few questions about their day and let them go off for 10-15 minutes. Then go do whatever you want. Women need to vent and they think you are actually listening if you sit there for 10-15 minutes (even while you are thinking football, that cutback or the awesome tits on your co worker). This technique needs to be done upon arriving home. Don't believe it?

They do not want their problems solved for them, and they certainly do not want you to pretend to listen to them.
Just try listening without taking blame, without offering solutions, or even agreeing with their point of view.
All you really need to do is understand that they are bothered by something. If you can convey that to them without giving advice, taking responsibility, or passing judgement, you will have done them and yourself a world of good.

to whoever posted the 'boycott exxon' crap - get a clue. area refineries sell to whoever will buy, not just stations that are branded the same. ie exxon refineries sell to mom and pop stations and anyone else. not only that, most staions are franchises so you really only hurt the individual that runs that station. why is everybody pissed that exxon made 9% profit? they have made a similar profit margin for years and no one cared. this 'boycott exxon' crap is an ingnorant knee-jerk reaction.

As for Oil companies bringing in record profits. Gas should be more expensive, but the extra money should go to cleaning up their and our mess not their pockets. Tax the hell out of and regulate consumption with high taxes.
Posted by: at April 28, 2006 02:56 PMWhat do fuel taxes accomplish? For starters, people cut back on fuel consumption. This is a positive thing for all of us, because burning oil leads to air, noise, water and soil pollution. Fuel taxes provide incentives for people to burn fuel in more efficient ways. Several countries in Europe actually call them 'carbon' taxes, since carbon is a major pollutant. It should be no surprise, then, that European cars are far superior to North American cars in fuel efficiency, and this includes cars produced by the same companies.
In Europe, fuel tax can amount to more than 75% of the price at the pump. Comparatively, gas taxes in Canada represent approximately 40% of the price at the pump, with variations between provinces and territories. In the U.S., the tax percentage is only 12.5%. Why the disparities? Well, because just like businesses, countries have different goals -- and taxes are placed on consumption goods as a vehicle by which governments attain these goals. Fuck the oil companies Buy biofuels.
I meant SH not HG

I've given up on reducing oil consuption. Every last drop is going to be burned regardless if that takes 50 or 100 years. I think its best we run out as soon as possible and start the healing earlier. Its just too effecient a source of energy. Eventually it will get so expensive to extract, the market will switch to alternative sources. Try telling China to reduce their consuption. Lots of luck.
Posted by: maybe I'm dead wrong at April 28, 2006 03:07 PMgas tax is regressive.

Posted by: e at April 28, 2006 03:15 PMTo the poster who commented: "women invented marriage", I must respectfully correct you. Marraige (in the Western sense anyway) was originally more of a contract to consolidate wealth and keep it "in the family". Men arranged marraiges of their offspring to the offspring of other men in order to strengthen or create wealth and inheritence lines, political/social/business alliances and to maintain a patriarcial order. The woman may have had a symbolic purpose/role but she rarely got to call the shots, rather she was more like property to be bought, sold or traded. Today, marriage is still a financial contract between two people and a whole lot more complications added in for the day time talk shows. The DeBeers people started the whole diamond engagement ring thing, not women, (although there are plenty of females out there gladly perpetuating the "two month salary" rule) and until fairly recently, had little power in the relationship once she became the wife (read property) of their husband.
...I just think it's wise to consider the historical context
Posted by: at April 28, 2006 03:16 PMwhy can't the oil co's make a profit? 9% profit ain't a whole lot. the fact that it added up to billions of dollars only points to how much was consumed. if apple makes 9% profit off of record sales of ipods nobody cares. so why the anger with the oil co's? i also don't think taxing the consumer is the right solution. give the oil co's tax breaks for alternative energy development. they have the money to invest meaningfully in alternative energy. they operate and maintain the world's energy infrastructure. it's in their and our long term best interest. give american auto manufacturers tax credits for producing and selling high efficiency vehicles.
oh, and carbon is not a major pollutant. it's a fundamental building block of all life.

Posted by: R3W at April 28, 2006 04:05 PMdude anon,
exxon profits ROSE 49%, their margin of profit wasn't 49%! It just means there was more consumption at a higher price so the total dollar value of profits increased.
Don't let your poor understanding of math shape your politics.
And as someone else said, Apple profit margin is like 25%. Congressional investigation?
Oil companies are publically traded companies so the people who profit from these profits are pesion holders, 401k holders etc.

Besides biking is kind of like surfing in the 70's around here. Same type of comradarie. Same unspoiled biking spots (road). Pretty soon there will be more kooks, but that's A-OK with everyone.
Peace,

This is a true story that happened today. SS7 and I were walking on a well known SF beach to surf a local point on a crappy small day but nobody was out and we wanted to get wet. As we were walking on the beach I was looking at the mussels and birds and hardly noticed the 2 fishermen on the rocks between the water and us. As I was walking with my custom made priceless board under my arm one of the fisherman , unbeknownst to me, yanked back on his rod and sent 3 of those 3 lb weights shooting at me at 60 mph, I heard a sudden "SMACK" and was stunned and pushed back, having no idea what the fuck hit my and my board. I looked up and saw the fisherman and realized what happened. " what the hell," I yelled, " you gotta be careful!" I wqas pissed but restrained. His repsonse, however, sent me into a rage. " No you watch out man!" he growled at me in a strange acdent somewhere between Russian and Spanish. " You no walk behind!" Keep in mind he was at least 30 yards away from me on a fucking rock, no less. I was dumbfounded then livid..." Whatch your damn rod!" Then his buddy, a big Russian I believe, says " you stay off the beach!" I respond " fuck you motherfucker! " and then in an ill advised fit of rage , pick up a large sedimentary ocean rock and deliver a fastball at his feet! The rock hit the large rock under his feat and exploded, clearly startling him. " fuck you !" I said to empahsize it. his reply was " no fuck you". then he got off his rock and went to his bag on the beach and I thought it better to go and surf. surfers beware, the fishermen are after us!
Posted by: antman at April 28, 2006 09:11 PMsorry hells angels guy, you weren't around, so i pinch hit for you.
Posted by: hells angels got no beef with fishing at April 28, 2006 09:20 PMAntman, that's crazy. I'm always paranoid to get into a hook, but that just takes the cake.
Posted by: welle at April 28, 2006 09:39 PMGlad you got away in one piece!
antman, if you made that shit up your an asshole...:/) if not, were you alone?, even so you gotta stand up to these fuckin' people! if he was wrong, and i trust your story, he was way out of line if he made contact, you have to shout these idiots down! of course, there are the details... guns, numbers, etc... but never the less there usually pussy's. and after you give them shit you can always paddle out.
Posted by: msurfer at April 28, 2006 09:55 PMYeah cause you can paddle out far enough to not get shot? What?
Posted by: How far do dem guns shoot? at April 28, 2006 10:10 PMSadly the story is true, ask Surf seeker for conformation. The part that got me was that they tried to blame me for the incident and started to yell at me when I told them to be careful. I have never had a bad experience with a fisherman before ( actually I was snagged at Rockaway years ago) so I have no reason to fabricate such a tale. What if he had done this to one of the more aggro locals who frequent that particular break? He would have probably gotten his as kicked i suspect. Still I probalby shouldnt have chucked the rock, what if I'd beaned him in the head and he drowned? I must admit, it felt good to let it fly but itWAS scary to allow my rage to takeover as I am a very mellow dude. He could have been a retired Russian seargent in the army and he might have shanked me or worse!
Posted by: anmtan at April 28, 2006 10:20 PMNaw, no beat downs, we’re all just huge “Brian” fans. And, it would be “nice” to see you guys in the hood.
Posted by: Spiderman at April 28, 2006 11:47 PMshut up dem guns.
i started out a mello surfer in 1970 and quickly realized mello is situational...
Posted by: msurfer at April 29, 2006 08:43 AMGrew up in NJ and the surf fisherman vs. surfer war has been raging on for 20 years. In Jersey, the breaks are much closer to the beach and the fisherman try to hit you with their sinkers. We would bite their lines...got ugly once in a while...it was downright dangerous when the stripers would run. Especially if you surfed off of a jetty.
Posted by: ex-pat at April 29, 2006 09:25 AMFunny mostly.
Yeah, I was there yesterday with Antman. The surprising thing was the dude didn't even bother to look behind him when preparing to cast. This is equivalent to a major KOOK maneuver in fishing. I was yelling at the dude too, and I've been caught in a line before, at OB of all places on a very small day a few years ago. Fucking fishermen kooks!

Posted by: Xigmacse at April 29, 2006 08:49 PMI know you molusk boys probably don't really give a shit, but this guy here Dean Karnazes is one of the most highly regarded surfers/windsurfers to come out of SF:
Here he is practicing running this hamster wheel thingy for a jaunt from Catalina to Newport (the OC).
This guy used to be more famous in the windsurf world in the 90's but now is all into ultra running. He ran 262 miles non stop from Calistoga to Santa Cruz not too long ago. The guy still surfs often and you may catch him at OB on the hamster wheel someday.
Posted by: bret at April 29, 2006 09:13 PMKarnazes may be an amazing athlete but your statement that he "...is one of the most highly regarded surfers...to come out of SF" is ludicrous Bret.
