Demon of Lindy

Glen loved Lindy. Linda Mar that is. His parents moved from Galveston, TX to Pacifica in 1994 and Glen has been surfing like a fiend ever since. He lives up in Pedro, behind the old fire house. He can watch his beloved bay all the time, before and after school, all day during the weekend. He's always got an eye on it. What Glen particularly enjoys are the big storms that roll through. When it's stormy and wild and the San Pedro creek is running strong, that's when Linda Mar turns on its game face in Glen's opinion. But this year something has shifted, something is not quite right. Glen spent most of January pulling into chocolate shake-like shacks in the murky boat-docks storm runoff. He learned to love the acrid, chemical taste of poo water in his mouth after a healthy smattering of brown-room closeouts. By mid-February Glen began noticing a few subtle but disturbing changes to his body. A few boils began appearing at the tops of his legs. His fingernails turned a yellowish tint. His eyes even appeared to turn an orangish-yellow. And something had changed on the inside too. He was now coughing up these disgusting phlegm-balls of unidentified muck. More and more he would hack up these gross globules and quickly flush them down the toilet. After a week or two he went to the doctor who was amazed and flummoxed by Glen's symptoms but couldn't figure out the cause. He suggested staying out of the water.

But.. in late February a killer storm raged through the quaint coastal burg of Pacifica. And Glen; yellowed, hair-falling out, face now swollen, phlegm-balls gargling... couldn't resist a few closeout tubes at his favorite little local rivermouth. This time the rain was raging and the creek was flowing like mad. Glen paddled out in the torrent and began working the frothy, churning sandbar peak. Barrel after barrel. Closeout drubbing after closeout drubbing. Glen was on cloud nine. After the session he jogged back up to his house and jumped in the shower. Something felt really wrong in Glen's throat. Really wrong. He hacked and harrumphed and gurgled and spat until he worked this chunk of inner tissue out of his mouth. He spit it into the bottom of the shower and was shocked and amazed to see that the purple/green mass quivered and moved of its own accord. Soon the thing looked to be reforming itself into a small demon critter. It had a tiny head with one large brown eye, a small mouth with big toothy fangs, and a little gelatinous brown/green body with fins and feet and wrinkled goo-flesh. It looked up at Glen, then sprinted over to his ankle and took a huge bite. It clamped onto Glen's ankle until Glen beat it off by smacking his leg into the side of the tub. The phlegm-thing then turned up toward him and said, in a high-pitched, devilish voice, "I am the demon of Linda Mar! All who surf my waters will be cursed until the day they die!" Haa haaa HAaaaah!!!!" And with that the little green demon jumped out of the shower, out of the bathroom, out of the house and all the way down to the boat-docks, where it leapt into the water and hasn't been seen since.

Gross! I used to surf LM all the time until I got good enough to surf elsewhere. I have good memories of the place, if you hit it just right it can dish up some fun waves for the beginner/intermediate surfer. Is it more polluted now? I don't see why it would be as it probably has had about the same runoff concentrations for a long time now. I'll have to get down there for old time's sake sometime, maybe after the demon has been taken care of.

E, Costanoa in Half Moon Bay is pretty cool and reasonable priced. www.costanoa.com

The Olema Inn would be great too. www.theolemainn.com or you could just stay at Smileys and get down with the Bo-town locals....

A couple other places in Tomales, Olema, Point Reyes area if you google a bit.

Posted by: Carp at March 8, 2006 10:26 AM

Wha-ha-what?

E- check this place out. Get a Suite for the offseason rate. Might have to stay two days though. Still a cheap deal for something different than a thin walled B&B like the Olema Inn.

e - too bad you can't do it Sunday night instead, the hot tip at Costanoa is a half price deal on the full moon. We stayed there last full moon, it's not bad.

Posted by: con at March 8, 2006 10:33 AM

Lerm - I saw some nice glassy waves this am. Didn't surf though. A couple spots along the beach looked fun.

Posted by: Dennis at March 8, 2006 10:34 AM

lerm - surfed this morning, 5 closeout drops for every one workable shoulder, but worth it after a week or two out of the water.

e - My wife and I like to stay at the Babbling Brook Inn in SC. Its pretty much downtown, so you can walk to Pacific, or walk to the beach. Breakfast is included in the mornings, which is served in this quaint little Santa Cruz style Victorian lobby. Wine and hor-dourves in the evenings. I think it is a two-day minimum stay though.

Reasonably priced too.

I live in the back of the valley in p-town-all the runoff from the streets goes right into the creek. I've surfed that creek, the docks, the whole freakin beach for five years and never got sick. I work in the presidio, drive by ob at least three times a week on the way home, and grew up at 44th/ulloa. LM is surfable more days a year than ob, and while it certainly doesn't compare in quality, it has some good days when all else is shut down. Yes, I'm an old fart, late forties, and ride mostly a log, which is appropriate at LM. Last sunday morn it was shoulder/head high with very heavy offshore winds at the pumphouse. Two or three of us getting rides while ob regs were shut down. Sat wasn't bad either, as was reported on this board. Yesterday I checked the fort, and 25 guys were fighting over short 3-6 footers. No thanks. I've surfed ob, and it's awesome. Many, many days it's well beyond my ability. But LM is five minutes from my home, which, incidentley is twenty times better as a place to live/raise a family than the sunset, and I get a lot of surf. When some of you guys are pushing 50, you'll be lucky to be able to live and surf in little ole p-town. And if you still rip, there always a few spots just north of LM. There is a small crew of guys at lm who some of you might have a hard time out paddling/positioning for a wave. Maybe that's part of the resentment........go to a shitty break and the locs shut you down. Incoming.

former sunset kid..........I agree, I surf Linda Mar about 100 days a year and dig it. Very few bad vibes......When I need to exceed, I go to Salmon Creek.......much friendlier that ob. Montara is my home break, but will travel south to kelly, San G and beyond. I'm a HMB oldster, almost 60, but am sure we've surfed together. Screw these guys who think their shit don't stink. I have tasted the monster phlegm and survived.

friend #1 is married with a kid. You'll recognize him easily at the beach. He has short light brown hair, clean shaven, and wears a black wetsuit, within a few inches of six feet tall and 170-190 pounds, and rarely calls anyone out or yells at anyone close to him, and prefers to surf the emptiest breaks at the beach.

you can have a good session at Lindy every 5-8 years if you surf it all the time like 200 times a year.

Posted by: at March 8, 2006 11:06 AM

It goes like this. If you insult lindy or the fort or steamers on the blog, somehow in your insecure mind, you feel somehow superior and a member of something. it's psychology 101.
i've had awesome 5 foot waves at linda mar, fort and steamers. and i have had duds of a 5 foot wave at ob. does this mean ob is inferior?
when i am out at LM often times there are surfers who are phenomenal and often times when i surf at ob there are surfers who are horrible. what can be deduced from this?

Deduction?

Most folks on this site are inferior surfers and hypocritical in their posting. But hey, they get to be one of the gang and on some occasions, a hot shot in the said gang. This satisifes the human need for acceptance and healthy ego so it is on one handa positive but the internet and blog mania has caused more than a few cup's to runneth over and so once back in reality, you take your place wide on the shoulder.

Maybe there are a few competent surfers on your blog but go easy on the transparent self deprecation cry for compliments. It's a regular compliment fest in the gang, that has been clear. Always going to be one to vouch for someones skills. This is not necessarily my concern although it does tie in.
The insults of the "inferior waves" are really unnecessary especially if this is supposed to be the positivity blog. If I were a longboarded who counted 90% of my sessions at Linda Mar and the other 10% at an easy point in warm mexican points, I would think that your blog was for some set of egomaniac surfers who had no idea what "soul" or "aloha" is. The hypocrisy is that you are black and white's n the lineup and not the stickerd up colored wettie dominant set wave rippers at the premier spots.
So check yo self. Just one shrink to be's opinion on the internet.

The quality of spots just depend on conditions.

Sure, OB has more "10" days than Mar, or FP, or Bo Bo; but Mar will be better on high tide and south winds; Bo-Bo will be better on a huge swell and NW winds. I don't think you can say that OB has more decent surf days per year than either of these spots. In fact, Mar may have more surfable days a year than any other spot in Nor Cal, if not the whole state.

Of course, a perfect day at OB is going to creat for more memorable waves than a perfect day at other breaks in the Bay Area. If its a 6 foot swell, lower tide, and glassy, I know where I'm going.

You are so right on. Every-time someone thinks that a surf spot sucks, he/she is indirectly saying that they are a better person than the people that surf said spot. I think that you are very astute.

Could it be that by saying that you are a soon to be Psychiatrist, that you are smarter than everyone on this board. More than likely, you are right. Everyone on this board contributes nothing to society, everyone here works for the "man," no contributor picks up trash and more often than not are just pricks, just like you.

Maybe you should consider changing majors, something less indulgent. How fucking privileged are you? Gross generalizations should be the last thing you make. As for assumptions, they only make an ass out of you and me.

Please spare us.

Sincerely yours,

And wiamea? flat right now! figure it out smarty pants.

Posted by: shrink hater at March 8, 2006 12:47 PM

Agreed t-dog. Rest of you should all stop the trash talking because lindy does have more surfable days per yr than any spot between Bol and SC.

I used to drive the coast all the time - and you know what I'll stake money on the fact that, although outstanding days at the mar are rare (I've had a choice few though) - given surfable days to mean days people can and do surf - Lindy rules supreme.

It's a rare day you'll pass that place without seeing a bunch of folks out and waves being caught. So yes I am counting 12 yr olds standing on fun boards - that is called surfing no matter how we might hate it.

Lindy serves a good role in the surfing community and I certainly have a few good memories of the place.

Oh and for gods sakes if you can whine about spot naming with reference to lindy you really really need to get out more.

Just like skiers rip on people who snowplow the bunny slopes, beer drinkers rip on people who drink Coors, and skaters rip on people who can't ollie, surfers will rip on people who choose those spots as their primary surf destinations.

Although, BVD does like to take his wife to Bo-Bo so she can get run over on his Stewart longboard.

Posted by: at March 8, 2006 12:56 PM

i find making something out of shit waves is one of the most satisfying surfing experiences there is. much more so than jostling for position with 50 other bros on the good days at some perfect spot. That might be a slight exaggeration but how can people not appreciate a truly shitty wave living here? I haven’t had a good surf day in ages but I sure have surfed some fun crap! when that one close-out-mushburger does open up and spits you down the line, when that random rogue wave sets up on the inner bars in the middle of summer after you’ve paddled out for twenty consecutive summer sessions without so much as a hint of quality – that is awesome. I love it. so many good memories of foggy, windy, mushy sessions.

I’ll never go to Indo because I know it will ruin me and steal this pleasure from me. And I can't afford the trip anyway. I've seen what Indo does to people - makes them only paddle out on the good days and talk shit about crappy waves. Screw that! - I like my shitty waves.

Obsessed tourist 'marries' dolphin

Tel Aviv (dpa) - British tourist Sharon Tendler has finally made her dream match - by "marrying" a dolphin she has been visiting for 15 years in the Israeli resort of Eilat, the mass-circulation Yediot Ahronot daily reported today.

Tendler, 41, has been visiting the city on the Gulf of Aqaba two or three times a year to spend time with her 35-year-old underwater sweetheart.

"The peace and tranquility under water, and his love, would calm me down," the Israeli daily quoted her as saying.

Last week Tendler finally plucked up the courage to ask the dolphin's trainer for the mammal's fin in marriage.

The wedding took place Wednesday, with the bride, wearing a white dress and watched by amazed spectators, walking down the dock to where the groom was waiting in the water.

She kissed him, to the cheers of the spectators and then, after the ceremony was sealed with some mackerels, was tossed into the water so she could swim away with her new husband.

"I'm the happiest girl on earth," the bride was quoted as saying. "I made a dream come true. And I am not a pervert."

Went to Indo on my honeymoon, surfed perfect waves, still paddle out into the stormiest of OB slop.. Indo does not ruin you, obro - it only makes you stronger.

BTW, what's this bullshit that saying a surf spot sucks mean you are claiming you are better than it? That's such crap. The fact is, if you travel around a bit, and surf a few places, you form opinions on spots you like, spots you don't - that's that. It doesn't mean you're a poser.

If OB is even barely surfable, it is always the call over Lindy, period.

Oh, and my most memorable, staisfying surf experience was not making something out of crap waves, but rather, scoring perfect empty baja point break. Empty, perfect waves is always better than crap waves.

Always a maintence surf possible, depending on how good your immune system is and how long a board you have. Ever meet a Texas surfer? They would be so stoked with what we have- guess it's all perspective.

The about 3 stellar days I've seen in over 2 years all were totally empty- go figure

We take issue with naming Mill Valley. Our trust funds are going great (oil stocks, thanks gramps!). We saw Jerry Garcia Band (minus Jerry of course) the other night at the SweetH20 and our Audi wagons get us and the 9'6" out to Bo in 36 minutes. We sold our "vintage" Vuarnets on Ebay for a profit and even if our wives choose to leave us it'll be fine. They don't call it Milf Valley for nothin'.

Hey Audi 4000. I'm not jealous - Gram left me a bundle but that was from Gramps working all his life as an electrician on ships at San Pedro WWII.
I bought several pair of vintage (circa '83) Vaurnet's on Ebay and I have them very nicely displayed in a beautiful glass case here in my 4 story Sunset Dist. mansion. Bought it in '99 for 350,000. It's now worth over a mil and half - can you believe that shit?
Now if you're the guy with the purple Audi wagon with no less than 4 pro travel baggged longbaords that surfs the Fort on minus ability then all bets are off - you suck.

Man those are some nice onions, love the little picture 3to5 posted above and I think lion hunting is incredibly lame too. Its hard to understand why anyone would want to do that if they really thought it through. And I write as someone who has hunted and fished for various smaller edible creatures, and who firmly believes its ethical to do so. Anybody have any advice for transitioning between a twin keel fish and a standard shortboard? Everytime I ride the fish for a few sessions in a row, I can't surf anywhere near my normal ripping jr. intermediate level on the shortboard for the next few sessions. I suck worse than e.

to spank, or not to spank...

My two year old smacked me in the side of the face with his little wooden train, Percy, last night.

I gave him a thwack on the side of the head right back, which, was my reaction to getting hit, and then sat him down in the hallway for "timeout"

My question is, does hitting your kid back as punishment just re-enforce that hitting is ok?

Posted by: blog nazi at March 8, 2006 03:27 PM

Reasonsing works better than a violent reaction. Show your kid how they hurt you. Demonstrate. Don't just react and smack. Unless you actually are riding a wave.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at March 8, 2006 03:32 PM

there is nothing wrong with spanking.

Posted by: at March 8, 2006 03:33 PM

yeah, I kind of ride the fence on this one. I mean I got spanked as a kid, and generally deserved the ones I got.

At the same time, I don't want to be spanking my kid as the general way to regulate bad behavior.

Posted by: sactomex at March 8, 2006 03:39 PM

Something definitely strange about the 'mar, I've surfed the Beach and points north and south since 1976 but never set foot in lindy. Why I don't know, checked it many times but couldn't bring myself to getting in the water there. the 'force' always told me not to.

Posted by: e at March 8, 2006 03:46 PM

i think it might not matter much. we haven't spanked, though, and one reason i'm glad is that it might make the transition to a more grown-up relationship with him easier. if you spank, when do you stop? but i actually think your example is different from using spanking as a "policy" punishment, and as long as you didn't hit him at all hard, i don't have a real problem with it---except that if he escalates and hits you harder you'd better have a different response to use (and then why not use that one right away?).

you know, really little kids are only sort of teachable, and hard-line parenting (low tolerance of bad behavior) is a pain in the ass for both of you without a lot of upside in my humble experience. use a lot of time outs, distraction, humor until the kid is actually old enough to reason with (i.e., thirty or forty).

Posted by: bajel (new name) at March 8, 2006 03:48 PM

I have always used a little smack to get attention when it was needed, like when my daughter was playing puppy and sunk her teeth in my leg. It is not the punishment, just an attention getter done rarely, and done on her bottom. Once I had her attention we discussed what happened, and then she went to her room for 10 minutes or so- she really did not like that.

I never punish in front of others. If they mis behaved in public, we left. I never do anything out of anger. Once I spoke, there were no second questins allowed. Once a topic was covered and finished, it was no longer to be discussed or debated. Soon I rarely had any problems.

I used to coach 60 kids at a time in a swimming pool. I am fair but very strict. Set the rules early. It is easier to ease up later than to crank down.

I have the same problem with my 3 year old. He is big for his age, and he likes to hit. "Timeouts" dont seem to work anymore. I mean, this kid gets GNARLY sometime. His Waldorf school wants me to talk to him like a fembot. "we dont hit" type of stuff, instead of saying "NO!"

what to do?

my gut instinct/reaction is to smack him back, but I have resisted. I hope he gets out of this stage soon. GNARLY!!

Posted by: Perry Cox at March 8, 2006 04:06 PM

sounds like smacking your two year old was a reaction, not discipline. control your reactions and learn to discipline with an open heart, never from anger.

good parenting is hard work and is not a product of your DNA. there is much to be learned by an earnest parent looking to be a good parent.

My first rule is DO NOT BE MY PARENTS.

Posted by: not judging, just sayin at March 8, 2006 04:11 PM

I am also a waldorf parent. "its not OK to hit, if you are upset, you may use your words". it can get a bit frustrating and feel hopeless, but it ultimately works. be patient Perry

Posted by: not judging, just sayin at March 8, 2006 04:13 PM

man, i dont know how many times i've asked myself "does this 'use your words' crap work?". thanks, not judging.

Posted by: Perry Cox at March 8, 2006 04:15 PM

also, kids are reflections of their environment. do you carry angry energy home with you? even if it is not directed at home by you, they will channel it.

Posted by: KIX at March 8, 2006 04:16 PM

Sactomex- imagine what it would be like if a human being more than two times your size thunked you on the head.

I have struggled with this myself, meaning I have done things I regret in the way of arm grabs or light taps. But basically, a show of physical force should never come to pass, unless the child is hurting themself or someone else. And then, the physical force should only be to prevent the child from continuing that action, and not as a reaction to that action.

I was spanked as a youngster, and it was useful only because there was so much ritual to the waiting for Dad to come home, explaining to him what I did, etc. Most of the time, the one whack for each year turned into one good one, or not even much of a whack. It was all about the drama not the actual physical action.

You can still use all this ritual but eliminate the physical violence and replace it with a time-out or what ever non violent punishment you want.

Violence only teaches more violence.

Posted by: Harold at March 8, 2006 04:18 PM

generally stick to the use your words rule. And you are right, the smack last night was a reaction Percy 's little magnetic knob clocking me under the right eye - and I have faith that eventually, the little one will get the message.

Posted by: sactomex at March 8, 2006 04:18 PM

I have always used a little smack to get attention when it was needed

Actually, I think that was the only time, and it was a light swat on her bottom. She was actually my step-daughter, so there were some other considerations, and I made sure she told her father what happened. I usually just put her in her room the second she started misbehaving. She was actually very well behaved around me, because she knew I would not tolerate much at all and that life was really good if she behaved. She tried to manipulate both her parents frequently because they had never set well defined limits, and they could be manipulated.

I do remember the most effective for of disclipline was making her clean up her messes, like crayon on walls or ashes from the grill all over the patio. I would make her clean for 15 minutes, which is a lifetime to kids, before I finished up. I would explain that nobody liked cleaning up messes because it wasn't fun, was it? She never did those twice.

She was from 4 to 6 years old, so I can't speak well on younger kids. All my swimmers were 5 and up, and I had permssion to beat them repeatedly with kickboards!

Hey, Sunny Garcia was beat as a kid, and he turned out pretty level headed and calm! (I hope I don't get my ass kicked for that.)

our young ripper, now five, hit, bit, walloped and was generally physically aggressive until about six months ago. the "talk to him" approach doesnt work. I've watched him listen to his teachers say "tell me how you feeeeel" and he says something like "I feel sad" and they say "ohh, well done!" and he learns that he can hammer some other kid, give some dopey grownup whatever bullshit they're asking to hear, and it's all good.

ya gotaa tell him no. timeout. take the toy away. every time. and be prepared to do it every time for about a year.

for those of you not yet parents - good luck...
