Posted by: tt at February 28, 2006 11:05 AMI am in the business of building excellent guitar players, and so, I must convey a certain truth to them along the way, one that does not seem to be obvious and sufficiently appreciated by most people. It is this: it is relatively easy to achieve about 80% of anything. It is relatively easy to develop ourselves to about 80% of proficiency in any field we may choose. If you want to become a computer programmer, a business person, own a restaurant, be a carpenter, be a musician, anything, you can study it, get experience, and become "functional". Most people that bother to develop something useful (and most do, being forced as we are to "make a living") achieve this level.
But to become really good, to start to rise above, and noticeably so, the average person doing what you do, THAT takes a whole different kind of effort, and a whole lot more of it. Most people do not do this in their particular field. Most people really are, when it comes down to it, content with doing what they "must", and keeping their standards and goals low enough to avoid too much demand and discomfort. That is why the age old lament of all employers is "you just can't find good help anymore". Yes, because the #1 goal of most people is to DO as little as possible and GET as much as possible. That is the formula for mediocrity.
To put it simply, it is easy to be mediocre, that is why so many people are achieving it.
Posted by: push it! at February 28, 2006 11:09 AMfunny that people think they have to regulate at fort point. Posted by: e at February 28, 2006 12:08 PMyo niceness.. get ready for a long post. I posted this one on my blog, but I think most of you will enjoy it. I leave for New Zealand today then I'm home in 2 weeks to end my journey. See you all soon.
I scored The Pass in Byron Bay at its absolute best. The inside corner/cove is similar to the harbor in SC, dredging below sea-level into a heavy, fast barrel. Once (if) you make that, it turns into a very very long workable, playful wave. the problem is it's crowded. Very crowded. Even more so, in fact, than the Super Bank (more of this later). Another bad thing about The Pass is the current. You paddle at a rate of about 3 yards per minute. I am absolutely not joking. It takes a good 20-30 minutes just to return to the peak after a wave at the cove. If you get a long one, don't even think about paddling back out to the peak. You have to paddle around the back through heaving close-outs into a smaller cove than where the wave breaks, full of sharp rocks scattered like landmine's about 2 feet below the surface. I surfed The Pass, on fire, for one full day. The longest, most exhausting, and intense session of my life. I double sessioned it, totaling 8 hours of water time. That in the sun, with that much paddling really takes it out of you. Needless to say I slept like a champ, in my car, that night. the next day I was to go up to the Gold Coast to celebrate my friends 30th birthday. I stopped at a beautiful spot I had gone to before but hadn't taken any pictures of, because of dead batteries. I got there and thought I should maybe check the other side of the beach, just for a goof, even though I wouldn't have time to surf it. I felt myself let out a heavy breath when I saw large perfect hollow barrels cranking onto the beach, in a very similar inside, low-tide OB fashion. Well, I could probably squeeze in a quick session I thought. I did, and I am SO happy I did. The tide shut it down which was good because it forced me to get out of the water. After that I eventually made my way to the Gold Coast. I'll just stop and look at the Super Bank, just for fun.. Mistake. Most of you know this, but, if you have to be somewhere at any specific time, don't even bother checking the waves. You'll just be bitter the rest of the day thinking you could be out in the waves. Well, from Snapper all the way down to Kirra, the Super Bank was absolutely firing. My jaw loosened up as I saw surfer after surfer pull into the deepest, hollowest, most perfect barrels, and successfully exit about 95% of the time. In fact, the 5% they wouldn't come out was because they got dropped in on. I have some amazing photos to share with everyone once I can get them online. And as you can imagine I got some of the best waves of my life surfing the Super Bank. I surfed from inside Snapper all the way down to Kirra throughout the day. Surfing the Super Bank is the equivalent to eating at a popular restaurant in Hollywood. Here's why.
Me: watching some guy pump insanely fast, pull into a deep barrel, and make it.
Me: thinking to myself, I know that style...
5 minutes pass. He paddles over to me and sits 5 feet from me.
Me: "Bruce, howzit brah?"
Bruce Irons: Without any expression in his voice "hey."
Another 20 minutes pass. Same situation, someone gets really deep, gets it, and paddles over.
Me: "Occy, how's it going?"
Occy: "Hey Mate! How ya going?"
Later..
Me: "Sophia, hola, que tal? Come estats?"
Sophia Mulanovich: laughing at my gringo accent "Hola, bien! Y tu?"
In my second session..
I didn't say hi to any of them this time, but.. I saw Kelly Slater paddle right past me about 20 feet away, and began talking to some groms. I saw him pull into a barrel, make it, but fall after. that gave me confidence to see the worlds best surfer fall in a manner I thought only I did. He definitely should of made it, and i have no clue why he fell, especially since he was just riding on the face. I laughed.
About 45 minutes later, Andy Irons surfed right to the peak I was at. I heard his voice and turned around to see him sitting about 30 feet behind me, rapping with some of the locals.
A few minutes later, Chris Ward flew down the lane to throw one the longest floaters I've ever seen.
I'm not someone who gets star struck, but you can't help but be amazed seeing that much raw power and talent in front of your eyes. Especially when Slater- 7 times world champion, Irons- 3 times world champion, Occy- 1 time world champ, and Mulanovich- 1 time woman's world champion are sitting a few feet from you.
They were all out because the Quiksilver Pro was taking place. Here's the description of the opening day of the contest. "With the waves consitently cranking all day at around the three to four foot mark the competitors in the opening round of this fantastic Quiksilver Pro presented by Samsung, many have stated that today could perhaps have been the best opening day for the event to date.
Old hard heads and new school shralpers alike excelled in the long-winding right hand breaking waves and spectators who braved the rain squalls were treated to everything from long tube riding to aerials to tail slides .
Kelly Slater, Andy Irons and Mick Fanning lead the charge from the better known tourers but not far off the pace were Danny Wills, Raoni Monteiro and Toby Martin who all won a rest day by coming in in first place.
Of the rookies Pancho Sullivan was devastating with his powerhouse assault and the little fellow with the big ticker, Adriano de Souza, who many claim could be Brazil's first Foster's ASP Men's World Tour champion, sent tongues wagging when he came out of the blocks with an extremely radical top to bottom display.
Kelly Slater is also leading the race for the Evian longest tube ride award. A 6.30am call (Queensland, Australia time) will be made tomorrow morning (Wednesday 1 March) as to the day’s program. The swell is due to increase slightly and, with the morning high tide, there is a strong possibility that the Quiksilver Core Store Surf Challenge may commence proceedings, and then either a start to the first round of the Roxy Pro presented by Samsung or round two of the Quiksilver Pro. See you in the morning!"
It was amazing sitting just outside the competition zone, seeing guys I watch in videos paint beautiful lines on these waves. After a few waves I wound up a little bit down the point to the next spot, Greenmount. I couldn't clearly see the pro's surfing anymore, but not to worry. Samsung had a huge video screen erected, aimed out into the water, not land, so that surfers in the water could watch. Australia really does cater to surfers and their life style. Crazy.
Adios y'all

Hey fuckers its BVD's up your ass crack pipe back with your late tuesday morning surf report!
Sorry for the delay but I was Downtown dealing with Bryant Street matters - *ucking cops talkin' about assault on a photog! No witness...
Charges dropped.
Surfed 7 sessions yesterday. 90 per hour winds and downed trees couldn't stop me from hitting all the south wind spots!
Rockaway, Linda Marvin's, Moron's Point, inside 'Cracker-Barrells', two sessions three sessions- all ripping killer hard offshore stand-up tubey waves. Size was so so - like 5 feet, then 3 then 7 at other spots! Lotta cool cats sitting in their Pathfinders and Ford trucks. Hooded Nor Cal sweatshirts and coats seemingly unable to make a move - inert in the pouring rain! - They seemed content watching me get waves like in the first photo on today's blog. Ride On E!
* Hey - a shout out here! --- Sorry I missed the 7am call at the Fort - I hate that faux bowl closeout but it would have been groovy to meet some of these anonomous smart ass' from E's looney website. Today is a mix of rain sun wind and clouds with a high degree of more depressing wind rain and sun - chance of happiness later.
SERIOUSLY - it's almost whipping easterlies at the bridge lookout - look for a decreasing swell as the high pressure builds in and we all know what that means!
Alright - there you have it. Oh shit - sorry - I forgot -. I am on the fence about the in-van/suv phone line surf report dealy. Dodge say's it can hook me up with a Satellite feed but then Honda wants to put me in a new Element with what looks to me like a satelite wave tracking system...
Happy surfing and good vibes - hug a tree a friend - your wife, your bro -

I’ve talked to a few SC shapers and the first thing they do is check their blank inventory. If they have a blank for the board, great, if not then they won’t take your order. The most popular blanks are still around, but if you want anything special its unlikely.
Everyone is making the switch over to EPS while continuing to seek out polyurethane blanks from overseas or Walker.
Clark sold the stringer designs and milling equipment so people can now get stringers again and are dialing in custom glue-ups of EPS blanks. Ward Coffey has this down but is still working out pricing. He sends back the foam scraps to the manufacturer to be recycled into new EPS blocks.
Walker is ramping capacity quickly but from what I heard, the quality is not good at the moment, so most aren't using the newer Walker blanks.

Was down in SC for the weekend. Caught up with some friends who hiked in to B*g F**t last month - the day they got there, the buoy was 17 at 17..
My cousin is about to take off on a chartered trip to the Maldives - He works as a bartender in Manhattan Beach.
With a two year old, and another on the way, don't know when I'll get to go on any such surf centric vacation - but WTF, the local spots keep the stoke well stoked, and stories of bros livin' the dream...

Posted by: at February 28, 2006 04:56 PMI met a girl from CL a year ago who was visiting SF from NYC because she was getting burnt out on Manhattan's alcoholic lifestyle. I didn't know what to expect, because she didn't have a pic to send me, but said she just wanted to hang out with someone while she was here looking for apartments to rent. I finally met up with her, and we went to a bar to talk and hang out. She looked like a spitting image of Scarlett Johannsen (however you spell it), except, well, chunkier; well, she seemed like it, since she was always wearing baggy sweaters every time we hung out.
The day before she left, we hung out at the place she was staying and were making out. I asked her if anyone else thought she looked like Scarlett Johannsen, and she said she got that all the time in NYC after Lost in Translation came out. Anyways, this whole time i'm thinking she is like this bigger version of Scarlett, because I always see her wearing baggy clothes. Then her top comes off and my eyes are bugging out. She had the biggest pair I've seen in a long time. Musta been 38 DDD's. I could see why she was wearing baggy clothes all the time. Ah, too bad I didn't keep in touch with that one.
Posted by: at February 28, 2006 05:02 PMHey anon, did she have a big FUP to hold up those 38's ?
Posted by: at February 28, 2006 05:19 PMFUPs are usually mutually exclusive with boobs that big
i don't think homeboy above knows what mutually exclusive means.
Posted by: word nerd at February 28, 2006 05:21 PMe - I love my Peavey man.
It doesn't go super loud, but it's great for recording.
I have a simpler rig than you pictured.
Strat through channel switch, DanElectro FabTone in series on the clean channel, BadHorsie Wah on the pre/post channel, with the pre overdriving the post for crunchier amp distortion.
Play mainly Reggae/Rock/Funk jam/hip-hop fusion styleeee..
Posted by: sactomex at February 28, 2006 05:26 PMFUP = fat upper pussy? what is a FUP?
Posted by: at February 28, 2006 05:26 PMoh, and sometimes fucked up speed metal, depending on who I'm playing with
Posted by: sactomex at February 28, 2006 05:27 PMyes, that is a correct definition for FUP.
Posted by: at February 28, 2006 05:31 PMSactomex, where did you get that nurse ass pic from last night? yikes!!!
Posted by: at February 28, 2006 05:31 PMGirls are soo much easier to pickup in San Fran than in NYC. I lived in NYC for some time and when I came to SF, it was like taking candy from a baby.
Posted by: at February 28, 2006 05:41 PMyeah, that was pretty awesome.
Posted by: sactomex at February 28, 2006 05:42 PMSome raverchick site that I shouldn't be browsing at work.
Well, no, she didn't have a FUP. She did have a nice big ass though. Onion Booty fer sure.
I keep hearing from the guys that it's a lot easier out in NYC. They say that the women are a lot more aggressive out there. I hear that all the time. Can anyone else enlighten on the debate? SF vs. NYC vs. where-ever; what's the best place for a single dude?
Posted by: at February 28, 2006 05:47 PMBack in my UCSC attending days, I had much luck on Pacific Ave. in Santa Cruz.
Start on the Upper end at the Red Room, which is actually on Cedar. Then pop down to Pacific and start working your way down to Laurel. The quality of the clientele starts to drop off a bit, especially once you cross laurel. But the Asti and the Avenue are total dives where you are almost guaranteed to score.
seriously.
peace out.
Posted by: jizzy at February 28, 2006 05:50 PMToo many nice guys in SF. They just want to talk about the weather and politics.
Posted by: hot chick at February 28, 2006 06:00 PMi know the (n)asti.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at February 28, 2006 06:05 PMyes, anon needle-dick, i am hot, i love sex, and i could take 3 of you at once. i've done it before. sack up, pussy.
Posted by: tt at February 28, 2006 06:18 PMtotally on it methinks tt. sf dudes gotta sack up. and bring some game besides that whole kclb hoodie look and surf talk. and running around in packs like a bunch of high schoolers.
the nyc dudes got good shoes because the work dress code is more enforced there, plus it's more competitive too so they are more aggressive, plus modelling and acting is way bigger there so it attracts all the hotties, even the ones who realize they are too smart for acting or modelling but they still stick around and are ripe for any dude who can talk about something...
"man, i used to regulate the fort like you wouldn't believe...." that should work ha!

Too ez 4 U to poke fun anon.
Where are all the players?
The names have been changed to protect the guilty.
FU Ataritollah!
"they just want to talk about weather and politics"
what's wrong with that? i'd have to put those as 1, 2 on the list of things I'm interested in talking about. is that why I'm single?
what should we talk about? TV? the newest fashion lines from the GAP? money? why we're here - what it all means? newest coldplay cd? our last totally awsome weekend trip to Tahoe where we did a lot of blow, errrr played in the snow?
or should we just DANCE!

Moonier: You sure did!
Male: You liked it, didn’t you?
Moonier: Of course! [Laughs.] Did you?
Male: Fuck, yeah!
Moonier: All right then.
To another guy unable to get an erection, Moonier said, “You’re fucking pathetic. You can’t get it up. Forget it.”
Males: She loves this shit [sex].

What does "BVB" stand for anyway? It appears that he doesnt have a lot of friends on this blog. Is he one of the local 'heavies' in the lineup that cant really surf?
Posted by: slayer at February 28, 2006 10:22 PMTool Time.
seems to me the negativity is almost always preceeded by an an unprovoked attack against the SF locs, the locs retaliate and then self-rightousness gets it's panties in a bunch. It's an endless cycle perpetuated by the ones pointing the finger.

Posted by: at February 28, 2006 10:38 PMwow that rape story is :
a) very very amusing
b) very scary as to what the hell some women can do if she decides she didn't enjoy her nailing.
Thank god they had it on tape.
