north shore beatdown

Posted by: at January 13, 2006 10:39 AM

I just re-read e's "Harmony Studios - Upchuck" and I have to say that's one of the funniest posts I've read on niceness. I don't care if it's pure fiction, non-fiction, based upon a true story, semi-autobiographical, or Million Little Pieces: James Frey style, it's fucking funny!

Got me thinking about localism, intimidation, "stink-eye" (why worry about that at your performance tonight, e?) and all the debates that occasionally rage on this blog. I'm more or less completely oblivious to it all, even though I've surfed in San Francisco for a long time now.

But I think it's because I don't live at the beach, and never have. That must be the difference. People who live in the Sunset and surf all the time start to develop friendships and enemies, as is natural - especially when there's gold in them thar hills.

I'm contemplating this all yesterday while driving the beach and I see, for the first time, a bumper sticker that reads "Kelly's cove local boys". So I google the phrase, and up comes two postings on niceness from mid December.

Could it be we're seeing a nascent movement towards localism at OB? Maybe it's getting worse? I don't think so. And I agree with one of you who posted the sentiment "Good luck patrolling 3 1/2 miles of beach!". But maybe that won't stop people from trying?

This is a long winded way of saying "Chill out everybody!". No need for negative attitudes out there. Let your surfing do the talking.

Posted by: Surfseeker7 at January 13, 2006 10:55 AM

I read that Pipe story, sounds like the guy got what was expected from those overly angry north shore locals. Look, Pipe is such a nightmare place to get waves if a) you arent a local, b) you dont charge super deep. the aussie was probably frustrated that he couldnt catch waves and finally just went for one.

how many of you have been frustrated at crowded reef breaks with small take off zones, usually you drop in on someone maybe on purpose maybe my mistake, but it happens, usually you dont get beat up. Thats because there is no localism in nor-cal. dont start with SC locals, they're a joke compared to hawaii.

I am sure that there are plenty of whacked out aussie spots where they pound on non locals who snake them. thats the world of overly agressive, self serving locals. lucky if you are one of them, be careful if you are not.

Posted by: dsx at January 13, 2006 11:07 AM

i would love it if someone pressed assault charges on those guys in the photos. or if their corporate sponsors dropped them. that would be RAD!!!

big wave tough guy mark healey didnt get out of the water himself, but his 'mokes beat the guy up (3 or 4 guys on 1) for him. what a friggin joke.

yah, the aussie dropped in on him, so if healey had a 'beef', he should have done the dirty work himself. pathetic.

i say automatic drafting of all these north shore tough guys into the US Army, send them to fallujah for 18 month stints each. that will show them what real tough-guys are. and help them appreciate where they live. phucking idiots!

Posted by: tt at January 13, 2006 11:15 AM

I would fire Mark Healy from my team for that shit. Verbal intimidation is one thing, physical violence is another. And a group beatdown is simply chicken shit weak sauce.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at January 13, 2006 11:21 AM

from the pics it looks like that was a dick drop-in. i can understand people getting aggressive when someone drops in on them on a dangerous wave or maybe even a really great wave (but def. not for anything under head high!). much more understandable than asses who are dicks to people they don't know at their favorite spots regardless of how the 'interlopers' surf or behave.

only 2 sessions so far in 06, hoping to double or triple that over this long weekend, thank you MLK!

Posted by: vons at January 13, 2006 11:24 AM

if the bruce irons dropped in on healy i dont think he would get beat up. and it is pretty out of control when the life guards are pointing out the guy to get beaten. pretty fucked if you ask me. the guy gets totally bitch slapped though which makes for a crazy photo..

Posted by: bagel at January 13, 2006 11:25 AM

not the bruce irons, just bruce irons

Posted by: bagel at January 13, 2006 11:27 AM

Wow, I just saw the NGO guy's post get pulled. Censorship sucks, but maybe it's about damn time.

tt, you should really read the whole debate on that incident before making statements like that. Rules are the rules, and Pipe is not your average beach break. This is a place where two guys have died in the past year: Malik Joyeux and Jon Mozo. Stuffing someone in the barrel there could have life and death consequences.

The wave is dangerous, but the crowds make it even more dangerous. We used to go out in heaving DOH-TOH Pupukea sandbar that would make Waimea shorebreak look fun, and if it weren't for the lame asses stuffing us in the barrel everytime, my friend would still be around (he drowned out there from suffering a concussion on a wipeout).

Posted by: MSG at January 13, 2006 11:27 AM

upon further inspection of those photos it looks like healy would have totally made it out of that barrel..still

Posted by: bagel at January 13, 2006 11:39 AM

MSG,
no matter how dangerous hawaii is, there is still no excuse for a group-beatdown on one guy.
no matter what.
more violence doesnt bring your friend or anybody else back from the dead, it just breeds more violence,

I agree with bagel, if the bruce irons or slater or vinnie de la pena or dooma or even chris brown dropped in on Healey, then there would be no beatdowns going on. its total bullshit.

PULL THEIR SPONSORS, MAKE THEM GO GET JOBS!!!

Posted by: MSG at January 13, 2006 11:55 AM

big incoming swell please go back to alaska. We need some mellow weekend waves for a change.

bring back summer!

Posted by: at January 13, 2006 11:57 AM

IMHO he earned a beatdown from healy for purposely dropping in on a potentially life-threatening wave (see malik jayoux or however the hell you spell it), but the lifeguards and the hyenas on the beach jumping in and filming the whole thing are idiots.

but that's how they keep order on the North Shore and i don't really see things changing anytime soon.

Posted by: bbr at January 13, 2006 12:04 PM

The North Shore is extremely overrated. F Hawaii.
I dont worship the place like most surfers. I'll take indo ANYDAY over Hawaii.

I hope those guys' sponsors go under. boycott Volcom and Quik!!

Re that Pipe beat down - Sad state of affairs indeed. Time they grew up. No doubt dropping in was wrong, but a group beat down just makes them look like a bunch of spoilt cowardly 15 yr olds.

I would be disgusted if I was there sponsor. Just the kind of behavior that gives surfing the bad rap that it mostly doesn’t deserve at all. I hope they get theirs.

Much as I am normally against it – I truly think the sponger should press charges, they have the evidence – it will be an open and shut. They need to be punished or this kind of thing will just continue.

Those stupid spoilt fuck@rs don’t own that break!

"I don't have a problem with it. I'll get a lot done in there. It will be good to decompress."

Small minds at work over in da islands. I have meet so many wonderful people over there but it never fails that a few bad apples ruin it for everyone.

Posted by: artifact at January 13, 2006 01:24 PM

i think sunny is retiring. jail = shit retirement.

i was not advocating the cowardly group beatdown in my post, just saying aggression for that reason is much more understandable than random territoriality (if that's a word). much better to smack a guy around for a dangerous drop-in than to hassle people just for paddling out at your favorite break. ideally they should have chased him off the beach rather than group beatdown.

Posted by: vons at January 13, 2006 01:33 PM

kookdom, you fail to realize that a lot of the bad apples come from da' mainland. Recognize it, and you'll see why the locals act like the way they do.

Case in point: when I was there a few months ago, a car with Oakland Raiders stickers plastered all over it, and a Chapman University Law sticker too, didn't let me merge, revved his engine too just to be a dick, and gave me the finger as I finally got in behind him. Now, you tell me, how do you like them apples? That's just one of several traffic run-ins with non-locals that i've had there during the same trip.

What's ruining Hawaii aren't the locals. It's all the dumbasses that go there without respecting the Aina. But, whatever, go to Indo. Better waves in general.

Posted by: MSG at January 13, 2006 01:36 PM

OK, so I am going to take shit for this...I think that Healy himself has every right to pop that idiot for dropping in. Come on, burning a full pipe local on a big heavy wave? OUT OF LINE. But the group beatdown is rather weak. Still, very, very bad move on spongers part.He knew what was at risk. No question.

Healey is a professional. He represents the sport. I'm not a big fan of the sport being represented like that. I'm not a big fans of drop-ins, either, but if I got paid for my image, I'd probably figure out a better to deal with it.

If anyone of you remember the time Tyson beat down Mitch Blood Green at Dapper Dan's at midnight, Green was awarded $45,000 for that.

They're into those group beatdowns in Hawaii. There's that video of that guy from Blue Crush beating that surfer who wouldn't paddle in during a contest. From a distance it looked like a one-on-one fight, and Blue Crush guy was obvioulsy into jiu jitsu: double-leg takedown, then sidecontrol, then mount, then mount beating. But then another camera angle surfaced where you could hear his friend telling the guy he was beating up to let go of the guillotine (headlock) so Blue Crush guy could beat him up. Weak.

As some of you are aware there was a piece written on niceness.org's surf report that although fictionalized, grossly distorted 1 or 2 real events and depicted the participants as drug addled cowards. Through a third party a request for a retraction was ignored, therefore the need for further action and the reason for this meeting. Our attorneys believe that due to the absence of the standard " Any resemblance to real persons or events..." disclaimer it may be actionable. If there is no legal recourse a hacker par excellance has been put on retainer and lastly, someone will clarify where the Fed's (park police) jurisdiction ends and our friends at SFPD begins

RE: eharmony studios fiction

e - I think I can dig up the report I photocopied from the courthouse several years ago...you didn't write fiction or maybe you did and didn't realize the correlation and thus what the story implied.

I have a feeling you were simply writing and ended up with non-fiction.

Some say "originality is the art of concealing your resources," but in this case your blog responses seem to indicate you may not be concealing any resources but your own creativity that ended up parallel with an incident several years ago...anyway, what baffles me is that I just reread the posts for that day and noticed that only Inokea draws the direct correlation between your story and actual events (which have been documented by SFPD). After reading this blog for a little while, it seems that there are a lot of locals writing here, so does no one remember?

Regardless, good luck tonight.

Whether it be from your own entries or those of .some of your regular blogmates and their attacks on those who seek only to preserve a small slice of what once was a tight little surf community. Ultimately it is you who is, fairly or not, held accountable for the haters, pic posters and their defenders. Tread lightly and you will not draw the kind of attention you don't want. This is merely heartfelt advice.

Whenever OB is good, un like Fulle#s or Se#side, you can find access to pics and commentary elsewhere. Now music, there is an under represented san fran blogosphere to be exploited for a little good old fashioned attention to your ego. I believe in your ego, we all like to be stroked in the ego category, nothing wrong with that, its only human to want to be appreciated for being rad, even if its just a rad kook or kookingly rad musician.
Maybe no one will want to kick your arse and you will gain the notoriety you seek. I am behind you, not in any gay way, I just think the surf blog has ruin its course. Now its just a bunch of strokers of wankers and arms who either love each other or hate each other. Sounds like the world at large. Me, Like Inokea in his BVDs am going to look elsewhere for my edification like pulse or line or storm or mav or callie. Or if you must be about the surf, just post pics without prose or poetry, just let the pics speak their prose or poetry by themselves. Mike over and out for a good long time (I promise) But carry on as I am sure you will regardless of my opinion, its not that important, I just want to be heard since I cant really surf anymore due to bodily functions that I must attend to.

Ultimately, the most poetic justice will be some uber loc who goes off...Hawaii or elsewhere...injures someone...spends a couple years in prison...gets cornholed in the showers...finds out he likes it...gets out...commits ever more heinous crimes...just to get corked...so sad

Posted by: yukon corn holius at January 13, 2006 09:38 PM

what is it with you "straight" guys and your prison fantasies ?

Don't blame e for what we rite on here, he just likes waves and music and feels like a kook a lot of the time. he e is not responsible for us, if we weren't here we would be somewhere else, and if we weren't making fun of dongs with pit bulls soul patches big trucks hot moms rich dads limited career options here we would be doing it somewhere else, because that guy is an easy and deserving target, thick on the ground from north of jenner to south of san diego and east to tahoe city. people who have the ability to regulate themselves for the benefit of all are rare but i am convinced through long attendance at e's that there are many of such rarities paying attention here. it is a good thing if you are capable of appreciating it. if you are not, and your offspring aren't different, eventually your line will expire. if your dad is really wealthy it may take several generations.

tt is a hypocrite: violence breeds more violence? you should read what you write. You sound like a fucking violent person to me.

Caustic and violent.

it's no reason most of the world hate Americans. you're just another typical American. judge an entire group of people without knowing anything about them, then make stupid ass assumptions about em. it'll be some ironic shit if you got blown the fuck up in Indo by asian muslims. that's hardcore localism at its best. i'd buy that for a dollar.

Posted by: Here's a buck, get a clue at January 14, 2006 03:01 AM

If you put TT's posts into context, you'll realize it's just SARCASM, dumbass. He's being facetious to make a point. Jesus Christ, you guys take this shit so seriously sometimes.

Love this song...

I can't seem to face up to the facts
I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax
I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire
Don't touch me I'm a real live wire

Psycho Killer
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far far better
Run run run run run run run away
Psycho Killer
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far far better
Run run run run run run run away

You start a conversation you can't even finish it.
You're talkin' a lot, but you're not sayin' anything.
When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed.
Say something once, why say it again?

Psycho Killer,
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far far better
Run run run run run run run away
Psycho Killer
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far far better
Run run run run run run run away

Ce que j'ai fait ce soir-l, Ce qu'elle a dit ce soir-l
Realisant mon espoir,
Je me lance vers la gloire... Ok
We are vain and we are blind
I hate people when they're not polite

Psycho Killer,
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far far better
Run run run run run run run away
Psycho Killer,
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far far better
Run run run run run run run away

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh...

My God Man! Austin is the Bud capital of the USA. What with the music scene and all there is almost always a blue/grey haze over DT at all times. By a Costco Pax of mint flavor condoms and have fun!
