Chunky and Foamy

Out of the surf loop.
Looked large and brooding out there.
More music than wave-riding for me over the last week.
Harmonic minor with a flat second.
Coltrane's Afro Blue and My Favorite Things (they sound kinda similar).
Learning basic scales with harmonics.
Using a looping pedal to lay down ethereal background noise.
Star Spangled Banner.
Working out arrangements for a few new cuts.
One sounds a bit like Hall of the Mountain King.
But also like the dracula theme song.
William Tell Overture.
Circle Jerks.
Too Much Pressure
Trying to keep it fresh, strange, unusual.
Focus on the groove.
Looks like we have a gig at Brainwash on Friday January 13th.
Spooky.

Here are a few rough cuts from a random jam the other day... band is currently called "Coalition of the Willing."
Playing in the Foam

Posted by: e at December 20, 2005 10:57 AM

Kaiser, regarding your display streeming video on TV question yesterday. I have tried multiple iterations of the process to no avail. Resolution and refresh rates of tv screens are totally different than computer monitors. If you have a DVI output on your computer and a DVI input on your TV, that is a start in the right direction. Otherwise, you will be looking at blurry video made worse by bad transfer from teh video card.

Posted by: jardinee at December 20, 2005 11:05 AM

E,
Excellent music. They are both great jams/songs.
Keep it up. Gracius.

Posted by: surfingsam at December 20, 2005 11:07 AM

Nice E. Time to hit the club circuit.

Are you going to the right coast this holiday? I'm going to try to hit it in NJ. Looks like a short swell will be arriving around the 27th and expect to be hooking up with a North Jersey guy while I'm out there.

Brrrr. Water temp 45, Air temp 32.

Cole dropped in on my at M _ B_T_ _ T _B's this morning.

I only got 2 waves. Water was clean, pretty warm, a wierd warble about half way through, not much wind, it did come up strong a few times. Otherwise, pretty mellow.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at December 20, 2005 11:14 AM

kaiser sose, been there, did that. Here's how...

I have a projector. Pulled the URL for the ASP webcast, full-screened it, and ran it out the video out on my laptop to the projector, which is the equivalent of three component video output. With a DVD this process gives better image on the projector than VHS or straight video signal can.

However, what is the point of taking highly compressed video and blowing it up? So you can see the pixelation on the big screen? I don't think it is worth blowing up any bigger than half a laptop screen, really. But if you want to do it...go for it.

This issue is the reason I got the DVD BUMPS. I've seen all the Surfvid.com content over the last few years, and am a friend of the video guy. But when you get the DVD you have DVD resolution, uncompressed, video of NorCal surf over the past five years. Good OB days, good Pacifica days, a few contests including the last Mavs contest.

Timmy Turner in a month-long coma

We (surfline) received this letter from Jessica, Timmy Turner's wife:

I am just letting you know that Timmy is in the hospital very seriously sick. He had brain surgery on Sat. night.

He is still in serious condition.

He will be in a coma for the next month.

He had gotten Staph infection throughout his body and through part of his brain.

I am just asking you to put him in every prayer you pray. Pass along the word so that everyone you know can pray too! I'm sorry you had to hear this way.

His loving wife, Jessica

Posted by: traut at December 20, 2005 11:55 AM

Serious bummer about Timmy. The chronicles of his travels are well worth viewing. The general vibe they evoke is a genuine love of surfing, travel and the people he has met. Having been to some sketchy places over the years, I know how hard it can be sometimes to stay healthy; but this points out how important it is to stay on top of all those little cuts, scrapes, bug-bites and funky fish dinners. He's in my prayers.

Posted by: Jimmie at December 20, 2005 11:55 AM

no "burning the map" is the one i was thinking of. he was younger, bright faced, innocent. hanging out with the local kids in indo.

This new singer is the drummer from my old band. He's not really a singer, per se.. but.. none of us can sing very well so he's been filling the roll.

here's a more detailed message on timmy turner...

Below is the email that was passed along to us:

To All: Timmy Turner had a sinus infection that he knew nothing about. His infection spread into his brain, hence the 103 temp (fever) and had to be induced into unconciousness (HE IS NOT IN A COMA) because he was trying to pull out his IV and and breathing tubes in his sleep. An MRI was performed this afternoon and Dr.'s and family are waiting for results at this time. His Dr.'s are saying he may make a full recovery but there is the risk of brain damage from the fever..........at this point they are optomistic because Timmy is young and strong. I just spoke to his immediate family to get this update.

In an email received by Surfing Magazine today, it was revealed that Huntington Beach pro surfer and legend Timmy Turner was admitted to the hospital with a serious sinus infection.

Below is the email that was passed along to us:

To All: Timmy Turner had a sinus infection that he knew nothing about. Say a prayer and think good thoughts for Timmy and his family.

SURFING will bring you more information as it becomes available.

Posted by: fact checker at December 20, 2005 02:42 PM

Sinus infections crossing the brain barrier is quite rare. It's probably hard for some people to imagine a sinus infection going unnoticed like that, but it happens. The infection comes and goes, can linger for months with or without obvious symptoms, then even occasionally "hides" a little while in the back or deep/upper sinuses waiting for an opportunity.

My ENT discusses this with me, so the source is reliable. The infection can be treated with injectable antibiotic, but it might take a while to take it down. I really feel sorry for this guy, it's one of those sneaky little nightmare scenarios we all have to deal with as surfers.

web,

trying to figure out if i should bring a bigger board (6' 10") in addition to my regular shortboard, which is good for waves up to about a foot or two overhead. whatchya think?

Posted by: PV at December 20, 2005 03:31 PM

I know the blank prices as of 12/7/2005 (the blank prices are increased 25% from his 8/15/2005 prices the day after Clark folded).

Too many blanks in the list, to name here but I guess I could fax a few people the blank prices.

As for the shaping prices, they are based on size of the blank and number of cuts performed.

Sample:

Up to a 7'8"
1 no rail cuts = 30.00
2 top rail cut, no bottom rail cut = 33
3 standard 24 cuts = 36.00
4 fine 32 cuts = 40.00
5 Super 40 cuts = 43.00
6 All time 60 cuts = 47.00

Longer boards cost more, short boards cost less.

Holy shit from sfgate:

(12-20) 18:01 PST WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) --

A 12-foot shark attacked the boat of a New Zealand team competing in a trans-Atlantic race on Tuesday, rocking the vessel and leaving the rowers "shell shocked."

"We were really scared," rower Tara Remington said on the Team Sun Latte Web site. "It was so aggressive and persistent, for a while we wondered if it would ever stop."

The shark battered the boat for 15 minutes, forcing Remington and teammate Iain Rudkin into the well of the 24-foot Woodvale Pairs class ocean rowing boat.

"It just kept hitting the boat, having a go at the rudder, the sea anchor and hull. We weren't sure it wasn't biting holes in the underside so we rang the support ship Aurora for advice and possible assistance," Remington said.

The support ship arrived about six hours later.

Remington and Rudkin are one of 26 teams competing in the 2,550-nautical mile Atlantic Rowing Race from the Canary Islands to Antigua.

After the support ship arrived and examined the boat, Remington and Rudkin continued, subsequently reporting that they had pulled within 8 nautical miles of the lead boat in the mixed pair division, Row4Cancer.

The New Zealand Herald newspaper said Remington and Rudkin were about 600 miles from the Canary Islands riding out a strong headwind when the attack occurred.

"The unprecedented attack continued unabated over the next 15 minutes leaving the rowers shell shocked," the Team Sun Latte Web site said.

Rudkin said on the Web site that he considered taping a flare to a cooking gas canister, "and trying to shoot it 'Jaws' style, but thought better of it."

Possible Monster Storm #7
This to be the closest thing to a full on El Nino-like winter storm we've seen in quite a while, assuming it develops as the models depict. This large storm is to track off Japan on Thursday (12/22) heading due east with 55-60 kt winds. Pressure to drop to a whopping 944 mbs with 50-60 kt winds aimed due east into early Saturday (12/24) as it reaches the dateline. 53 ft seas forecast aimed due east right up the great circle paths to California with solid energy pushing to Hawaii too, al on or below the 45N latitude. This storm to slowly fade into Sunday AM (12/25) as it moves into the Gulf of Alaska with seas fading fast from 40 ft. Some resurgence possible in the Gulf early next week. Most impressive for a modeled projection.

Posted by: Kaiser at December 20, 2005 10:23 PM

The wind speeds are supposed to go down a bit on Saturday too, with perhaps a brief direction change in the afternoon from South to North.
