A Beautiful Thing

There's a little art gallery in my neighborhood.
From time to time they have openings and i'll poke my head in if i happen to be walking by.
Last weekend I noticed a small gathering of folks at the gallery so i checked it out.
Included in the show were finely wraught abstract wooden surfboards.
Moody paintings of the sunset district.
One where the fiery blaze of the setting sun shone on the tracks of the N-judah.
Impressionistic interpretations of the surface of the ocean.
Beautiful large-scale paintings of crenullated sea creatures.
Wave photos of a dream-like curl.
The show is called "A Beautiful Thing."
Curated by Bob Carillo (BVB, Agnes, Local415).
An inspiring show Bob, thanks for putting it together!

blakestah, why do you always tell people to tell others that "you sent them" or "you are friends with blakestah"? Are you trying to work some kind of commission deal? Tell Daniel I sent you, tell Lockbox I sent you, tell SF surf shop John I sent you, tell Manny I sent you, tell Potrero PT I sent you, tell Poseidon I sent you. blah blah. boo hoo.

Posted by: at December 16, 2005 10:34 AM

That surf gallery shit's going to set off a rash of beat downs and dirt naps. No pun intended.

KCLB's and local claimers better carry a copy of their birth certificate or passport. Your shit needs to read born in SF and you need to fucking rip if you want status.

I was in your neighborhood today e. Paddle was basically dryhair, offshore wind, waves in the head to overhead range, and...only a handful of takers along the entire beach. Absolutely zero consequene to paddling out. It was pretty fun. So where were the crowds.

Nice to surf with some solid offshores for a change.

Congrats to Alex M.! Great guy, great surfer. The day after I met him I saw him a ways off in the water, waved an obvious HALLLOOOOO, immediately spun around into a takeoff and flew into biggest yard sale wipeout of my surfing days to date. A small wave, but very punchy, all my poorly judged decisions combined into a spectacular display - body flying all akimbo, board flying and spinning, hood ripped off, beaten down and dragged underwater. Mortifying. Then I realized what a priviledge it is to be a huge kook in front of the world's best surfers. :) Go Alex!

kdalle: maybe because it was farking freezing!! I went too but this has been the coldest morning of the season. IMO. Today I got lucky and found the consequence part of the paddle out :P Brrrrrrrr

as for pipe, I couldn't get it to load in IE but its working in Firefox.

as for telling someone that so-and-so sent me is typically so that you will get treated better since they know you are a friend.

COLD!!

I was the only one out at the showers at high tide. First session since last...Tuesday, maybe; nasty flu. Thought it'd be an easy paddle, but got cleaned up as soon as I made it out. There are some punchy waves coming through, even if they weren't setting up very well where I was. A couple drops but no good rides. Lots of dolphins.

This blog has gotten pretty negative here and there over the last few days. Lot's of rancor on all sorts of topics. Mostly about who deserves respect, who warrants contempt, and who's ruining surfing in San Francisco. What's the deal? Maybe it's because we got some good, solid, thumpin' swell and a few individuals are feeling shitty because they haired-out and didn't get any of it. Don't get me wrong, I am not pointing a finger at anyone in particular; and there is no shame in recognizing your limits. Myself? I hair-out at Ocean Beach a lot - usually when it gets over 10-12 foot on the face. I'd like to charge harder, but I'm not gonna act stupid and get myself in trouble out there; at the same time, I'm certainly not gonna get bitter about it. Maybe I'm way out of line here - apologies to those I offend. It's just that the increase in bitterness I've observed here lately has coincided with my observation of an increase in the number surfers sittin' it out in the parking lot on the bigger days. Coincidence or correlation?
I'm an older guy, with a bad back and mediocre skills; but I pushed my boundaries and surfed last Saturday. It was biggish (for me) and powerful. I got some good rides, but also totally kooked-out on a couple waves. On Sunday I had other things to do, but, from what I heard, I probably would have passed anyway - too big (for me). Wed. afternoon was small and fun as hell, I got lots of good waves and good rides. I drove past the beach yesterday morning (Thursday) and it looked marginally do-able (even for me). But I was working and could not get away until after dark. Oh well, that's life - and truth be told, once I had a chance to take a closer look, I might have haired-out anyway. Again, that's life. No major regrets. No bitterness.
We all deserve respect: locals, transplants, kooks and rippers. Respect is everyone's birthright. It does not have to be earned, and should only be withheld when we fail to show it to others. Admiration is something else. Guys like Alex Martins have earned our admiration for charging hard and staying real. e has earned our admiration for providing this forum everyday. Others have earned our admiration for doing their jobs; taking care of their familiies and friends; and, in general, getting by day-to-day with style and grace.

Jimmie: "Respect is everyone's birthright"

a perfect summation of this very tired 'entitlement' issue. the negativity on this board is best left ignored. arguing with self-righteousness and ignorance is futile. and for the bashers, if you don't like this blog and its contents then stay the fuck away.

peace to all the good folk on this board.

Someone asked if I'm a local. Not that I really care, or need to justify myself... but I was born at Children's hospital on California St., a 2nd generation Californian. Lived in SF area 25 years and SB and the Sierras another 5. Spent several years on the Great Highway and have lived the majority of the last 10 years walking distance from the ocean. I have been poorly surfing the beach for over 10 odd years and I am humbled on a regular basis.

Would any of you recognize me, probably not as I surf alone 90% of the time, keep to myself and paddle away from crowds- just one of the hooded masses. Even in the last week I have surfed alone, on a peak to myself more than once. If I could have my way there would be no surf reports, cams etc.

I enjoy pics and sharing in stoke. I grew up dreaming about National Geographic photo adventures and have taken photos my entire life, including of surfing and I will continue to do so. I have never named a photo (Mavs excluded) and they are buried in a folder mixed with many breaks, mixed in folders of non surfing, mixed in a random- unlinked site. Ok this week maybe I posted a couple too many un-named pics, buried 30-100 posts deep in a blog. But I will never name or post until well after a swell event. There are many places where I will never take a camera out, as beautiful as it might be. But I will continue live my life how I want to, share stoke and give respect. However if someone threatens or attacks me or my property be assured I will defend myself with all of my power.

This blog provides a welcome relief from my boring cube job, and I thank E for providing an interesting forum and a great outlook on life. And his blog without sweet surf pics or Kaiser's hotties wouldn't be the same. I have met some cool real people from this blog, who are stoked to have the opportunity to surf as I do. Those people like kdalle and crew whove been surfing out here for 30 years in all conditions deserve serious respect in my book, as well as those who have come before them.

Do I feel entitled to anything because I was born here, NO. In fact I enjoy sharing experiences with respectful, positive people from around the world. Maybe that's why I like travelling. Do I get pissed off about disresecptful "trannys" or locals, yep- of course but usually I just paddle away.

I count my blessings everyday that I can worry about such things as whether I can go surfing or not. Maybe some of you guys should too.

Empty Wave- Good luck surfing it!

Empty Wilderness- Good luck finding it!

Hey,

This is a non-surfing lurker who has enjoyed E's blog entries and all the comments for a while. Now I am coming to SF, but don't worry, it is during the summer and I am not coming to surf. I will be racing at the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon on June 4th. Any suggestions on where I should stay? I am looking for somewhat reasonable rates, which probably does not happen in SF much. Any ideas? I think the race site is around Marina Green?

Oh, and I want to stay away from BVD's crew. Lord knows I do not need a beat down before a big race.

so i was just doing a little lunch time gift buying at the borders near my office and there were about five different books about about surfing prominently displayed on the new nonfiction rack. this is out of like 30 books total. so surfing contributes about 13% of the national culture right now?

one of them was called something like "surfing: the coolest sport ever" and i failed to detect any irony. i wasn't embarrassed because no one would ever know i surf from looking at me or meeting me.

i guess the publishing cartel has detected a profit opportunity.

You don't have to be a Mensa member to see the correlation. The more local pics, no matter how old or deeply buried within the blog, the more pissed off locals and concerned transplants as well. Shouldn't "niceness" include treading lightly or does this blog just pay lip service to an ideal ?

No amount of self deprecating anecdotes excuse your "you're just pissed off 'cause you haired out" theory Jimmie. Not that you'd care but I've lost some respect for you.

Yes, the beach is often empty on the good big days but there's the whole rest of the year to consider. To think that those images, in spite of all the disclaimers, aren't enticing to surfers of all abilities seeking a change of scenery is to put it "nicely" naive.

You want your hippy vibe blog back ? Show some restraint.

anonymous - Of course I care that you've lost some respect for me - even if I don't know who you are. I'm human. I want to be respected. Hell, for that matter, I want to be liked.
There's a difference between being ingenuously / gratuitously self-deprecating and merely trying to honestly describe oneself. I was NOT trying to excuse my theory, or justify my speculation by playing at humility. I just wanted to be sure that no one could call me out for being a shit-talking blowhard.
As far as your correlation goes: point well taken. I'm sure there are some well-meaning locals and transplants with legitimate concerns about internet exposure. I respect those posts and even sympathize. I just wondered (out loud) if there weren't also some sour grapes going around lately. Hey, E.

Maybe you should create a pay site? People cough up $10 a year and submit an application with their name and address. You decide who gets to play and we don't have to put up with all this crap (except crap from friends which we expect now and then).

A few thousand loyal niceness types and you could actually get paid for all the work you put into maintaining this site.

Just a thought.

Posted by: antman at December 16, 2005 08:55 PM

I'm betting it's just one or two people doing it. Obviously BVB, and maybe one other person. If we just post IP addresses with each posting, problem solved. Or if you don't want to do that, maybe have some formula that alters the IP #, so you're not posting everyone's real IP#s, but people still have some unique number associated with their postings...

Excuse the techy interlude.

Beat downs and long paddles - humiliation and glory in the water. Far and few between. It's only a ride; a great wave, a shitty good wave, a frosty down-the-line - 100 yard run, an off the lip. a big floaty drop; endless paddling - freezing cold. It's all good. Charlie Callahan is the artist painting the sea creatures.
