summertime funk

Hoping for surf this morning.
New wetsuit has me psyching to get in the water.
But.. to no avail.
Onshorish, dumpy, crumbly, ugly and small.

This weekend saw some good ones.
Glassy and peaky on Saturday.
Bowly and racy yesterday.

Allz i have to say is that new wetsuits farking RULE!!!
Holy shit. No worries that cold water will leak into that little hole near your chest. No worries that cold water will just sit down near your stomach and chill your core. No funky smell. No slice in the upper thigh that lets freezing water leak right into your private parts area. None of that!! Just pure, warm, comfortable, warm, snug, warm comfy warm enjoyment!! yes!

Surfed with Bagel yesterday and had a good time. head-highish lefts filtered through every 5 or ten minutes. I found a few steep drops and even got back up to the lip on a few.

The Slop Fest went down yesterday. I saw a bunch of folks down there but didn't investigate. Anyone have a recap?

Last night i went to a wedding banquet at this Chinese place in Millbrae. It was a fixed course meal and some of the courses were Birds Nest soup (made from bird saliva), Abalone, Squab (pidgeon), Giant Clam, Conch. It was tasty but mildly nauseating.

Awe fshore photos

congrats to goodmorning!
thank goodness for september sun.

E - I went to the same kinda deal a few years ago in Millbrea. Up the hill a little, parking across the street, fancy for chinese. I think it's a real popular place for receptions.

What kind of wetsuit did you get? I need a new wetsuit. Mine has stretched abit and the legs kinda balloon when I stand up. It's 100% super stretch. My older suit has a mix of super and regular stretch. It held up better, actually I still use it as my backup. I'd like to find a 4/3 with a hood.

Caught a bunch of fun waves this weekend too.

Posted by: Dennis at August 29, 2005 11:46 AM

Yeah, what suit did you get...i need to get a new O'niell or another Rip Curl...heard good things about the O'niells but having had 4 of them, they were not that great before...

Anyone have any good remedies for a Stingray sting? Got hit on my ankle jumping off my board and was told to stick it in hot water - hasn't modern medicine figured out any other cures? Damm them things don't mess around!

I watched Barefoot adventure last night by Bruce Brown and I was amazed with all the classic early 60's footage of OB and Santa Cruz.

One segment shows Jack Oneill in a large, three wheeled sand/ sail thingee with wheels doing 50 mph-blowing past OB beach walkers.

Got Stoke?

Too many happy postings for a Monday.

So here is a downer: Smash and Grabber hit us last night. Wifey took the dog for a walk at Fort Funston. Stashed her purse under a seat but not hidden enough. Phone, Palm Pilot, new Sunglasses. Little bit of cash.

5:30 - 6 PM Ft Funston Parking lot.

Brazen.

Oh well. Property is theft.

Oneil Psycho 1. The oneil suits are the only ones that fit me good. The last 3 i've had wore out in about a year. I tried to get the Heat, which is less superstretch, but they didn't have my size (LT) at either Wise or the Oneil shop in Mill Valley. They didn't have ANY Psycho 1s or Heats in my size at the friggin Oneil shop in Mill Valley!? wtf! I tried on the no-logo Aleeda's at Mollusk, but they didn't fit quite right. I didn't really want to support Wise but they're the only local shop that had the suit i needed. bummer.

surf!

Learning Duke Ellington's Caravan right now. That song rules. I really dig Brian Seltzer's (sp?)version. I didn't realize how hard that guy rips on guitar. Holy shit. ripper.

I thought Sunday would be totally flat, so inflat-a-gator made his debut. Although much easier to get to the line-up then the inflatable raft, he isn't shaped real good for riding the waves. Mostly just a drop and a death roll as the wave passes over him. I found him to be not much fun in the double over-snout conditions. Of greater fun, however, was dragging inflat-a-gator out past the line-up and seeing how long it took him to get in. His little stubby legs kept him from tipping over. Beach patrol ended up picking him up while I was out surfing.

glad some of you found waves; none for me. beach picnic on sat., but the waves were grim, so a swim was all i could manage. shouldda hunted some more.

Andrew, I regret to tell you that as the Beach Patrol brought the inflat-a-gator to Slopfest, he was violated multiple times by the participants. Sorry!

Slopfest....a semi-serious surf contest....each heat is won by the longest standing ride. In addition, the best maneuver in each heat advances to the maneuver final.

We saw little Summer take out Sean Scallan and some other good surfers. She is only 12, but she only weighs about 65 pounds and cannot be knocked off her feet. A real charger, that one. The usual guys ended up in the finals. Then, Eric the Lakesurfer visiting from Wisconsin (I think he lives in Wisconsin, but maybe Illinois) won. He weighs maybe 100 pounds. Very skilled surfer. Some of the rides bested 40 seconds.

In the maneuver heat, the Brazzos were disappointed that the judges gave it to Brunson for landing a VERY impressive lip-bash-switchstance-re-entry on his longboard. Alex and Christian were ripping, as usual.

Bandini brought refreshments for all, and it was light winds and relatively clean waves throughout the 4-5 hours of the contest. Then, everyone cleaned up and had a mini-block-party in front of SF Surfshop.

Slopfest is a hugely enjoyable day for me and a lot of the others that live in striking range of the Sea Biscuit, as well as a host of others outside the neighborhood.

i swear by the o'neil 'heat', i'm on my second one now it blew me away last winter with its warmth.

fun waves this weekend especially since i'd been out of the water for a month. lots of dolphins out too which is always cool.

Posted by: vons at August 29, 2005 12:36 PM

Also, on the stingray tip, soak it in water AS HOT AS YOU CAN STAND for 40 minutes. That denatures the toxin. The rest of the problem is infection, and doctors have antibiotics for that.

The annual O'Neill Labor day wetsuit sale in Santa Cruz this coming weekend!

Posted by: at August 29, 2005 12:37 PM

I know there are stingrays in cold water; I've seen 'em at the Monterey Bay Aquarium--but do they reside at OB? I think you're supposed to soak the foot in hot water, right? Last time I was in San Diego, there were 8 tourists sitting with their feet in buckets. Ouch.

Dolphin feeding frenzy happened a few yards away from me on Saturday. Scared the $h*t outta me at first--'til I realized they were friendlies. Also, who is responsible for burying the dead seals that wash up with bites outta them--or a missing head. Is there someone that takes charge in getting the chum out of the water? A few years ago, I was strolling down the beach and this guy was cutting off the head (to retrieve the skull) of a large elephant seal. He didn't look like a researcher--more like an insanee. He was chucking all the fresh flesh and bloody meat over his shoulder as he was axing away. All this blood and guts was landing in the water and being taken out to sea. Pretty irritating and irresponsible. Nothing like chumming for surfers.

Posted by: amigoism at August 29, 2005 12:42 PM

Yeah Bstah. I saw you in the first heat. Not sure if you recognized me but I was surfing about 50 yaeds south of you. You caught a bunch-o-waves in your heat. When I came out of the water, I didn't see you.

Andrew - I saw you also, paddling out with the croc. I was walking along the beach.

Said hey to Christian and Sean too.

Dolphins - I saw one bobbing around in the water on Sat morning. It had its head out of the water up to its pectoral fins just looking around for almost 5 minutes. Never saw that before. I wasn't sure if it was a territorial thing or if it was just showing off for the lady dolphins.

Posted by: Dennis at August 29, 2005 01:17 PM

Thanks for the tips - (Sorry for naming in advance) I'm in SD at our OB and Stingrays hang out on the surfing area since nonsurfers aren't allowed ova there and if you get a ride all the way in as I did jumping off yer board can be risky business - just lucky I landed on my feet this time vs. my ass - That would have been horrible!

I accidentally punted a jellyfish this week - sat up on the board and squoooosh...oogy feeling, huge bugger too, it engulfed my whole foot. Involuntarily yelped. Not nearly as bad as some guy, I recall here or somewhere else, who fell face first into a jellyfish? Ugh!

I tried on Billabong and Bodyglove wetsuits and they were very similar, but the Bodyglove Vapor felt less restricting around the shoulders. Great suit, very warm. I got a small tear in the glue/rubber seam at the bottom of the left leg and sent it back for warranty after 7 months. I got a brand new suit back a few weeks later :-) The only think I don't like is the location of the key pocket. It's on the back of the suit in a very hard to reach location. The O'neill suits have the key pocket in the leg where it's easy to reach without peeling the suit off.

I like the Psycho 1. I had to dunk myself a couple of times yesterday to stay comfortable.

That pod of dolphins has been hanging around for over a month now. At least one is f'ing big. Friday morning dp I saw a baby, probably no more than 3 feet long. Pretty cool. I've also watched them do that hang out without swimming, checking things out thing. Most of this taking place 10-15 yards outside of where you can stand up.

Posted by: R3W at August 29, 2005 03:15 PM

i loved my first zipperless ripcurl but the new ones were defective. Got a psycho 2 and it feels great but h20 leaks thru the neck and gets caught in the ankles making me look and feel like El Kooko numero uno. What's the problem?

i liked the first psycho i got a few years back as it fit perfectly. i bought one of the newer ones recently and it's like someone stretched out the neoprene for me. the legs are a little baggy, holds water now, and i got a huge rip down the seam in my first sesh in it. the first psycho i bought and the 2nd both were LTs. go figure.

board buying philosophy question. i've had my eye on this one board for awhile. usually when i get a board you look at it and you just fantasize about riding it and where it could bring ya. this new board i've been eyeing has the same fantasies, but than i also have these dark visions 'maybe it's a dog' 'maybe it'll bog after bottom turn', etc. maybe it's not meant to be and i shouldn't buy? i don't recall ever having thoughts like that before when eyeing a board i've purchased so i'm confused. maybe i'm just more rational now?

Posted by: Burnt Reynolds at August 29, 2005 03:56 PM

j,

never buy a board that doesn't just get you frothing, hot and bothered. if your getting bad vibes from a board. you'll second guess it during a the moment of truth and dig rail or sink the nose, and generally HATE IT.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at August 29, 2005 04:02 PM

J - you should get a board shaped for you. Then is guaranteed to work.

IMHO Hotline makes the best wetsuits

Posted by: at August 29, 2005 04:05 PM

I am going to recommend that those of you with leaky wetsuits get a thermal. I got a hoodless bodyglove ($25) and a hooded hotline ($50). They are both great...hooded one has flap that covers the neck so it's good for body surfing. My reccommendation is to get a long-sleeve thermal that have the thumb loops to hold the sleeve as you put the wetsuit on.

I'm also considering dropping $70 on a dive skin..0.5 to 1mm layer divers wear underneath the wetsuit, available at any dive shop. Apparently they last forever.

Posted by: Virgin Destroyer (Ipis Ni Lupe) at August 29, 2005 04:07 PM

My baggy legged wetsuit is a psycho 2. Water leaks in the back near the zipper where two different panles come together. The seams have opened on the otter shell. The psycho 1 fits better, even after 2.5 years of use.

I'm thinking about the bodyglove 4/3 Storm Trooper Fullsuit with Hood. I always wanted to be a storm trooper.

I've got a few year old physco. Best suit I ever had, so I bought another a couple weeks ago.

Same thing everyone says above....legs filled with water. I've always had an XL. This new one is too big. I'm bummed because it was 3bills. To me, the new suits with this super stretch technology is (was) worth the extra $100. Now I don't know what to think other than I'm super bummed. I thought it was just me (like I shrunk or something) but after reading all of the above, I think it is the suit.

I've been going back and forth between Hotline and O'neil. Until this last suit I thought I would be an O'neil man forever, thinking that the smaller Hotline company wouldn't be able to produce these new strechy, warmer and lighter suits. Get it together Oniel!!!! No one wants to weigh 20 more pounds because their suit is filled with water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Xcel suits are pretty good for me except that their LT needs to be 1.5 inches longer to 100% prevent the bootie/wetsuit gap that occasionally happens with me.

And extra inch in the arms would be nice as well.

Used to have a Hotline and it lasted a good long time. Anyone know if their sizes run larger or smaller than o'Neil,

beer (sorta) and vinegar (definitely) work on a sting. someone told me rubbing alcohol works as well, but i've never tried it.

blakestah's scalding water trick is the absolute best remedy for poison oak, too...releases all the histamines at once and you're freed from the agony for at least an hour.

Posted by: friendly at August 29, 2005 05:28 PM

P. oak and hot water don't mix for me--it spreads. O'neals don't fit me, but were pretty durable (psycho 1), lasted 2 seasons. the LT excel is sweet, super stretchy, 1 season & still warm. don't like their booties, though-lots of holes. rip curls were comfy but not durable-lots of seam blowouts.
