piddly pulses

Thought with the calmer wind last night there might be a chance for surf this morning.
Went for the blind go out.
As always it was fun to be out in the water.
Not much in the way of quality rideables.
Scored a few micro peelers and character-rich down-the-line meanderings.
Nobody around except a few seals and jellyfish.
Nice dry-hair paddleout.
No duckdiving.
A few little squirty somethings.
Surface not too hacked.
Doable but small.

Finally received the new Surfer's Journal. A beautiful issue. Some of the Canadian photographs with the thick, rich, green forests and glassy blue reef-break suckouts are incredible. Also the West Oz photo gallery. Oh My!!!

Jeff Chamberlain, from the Central Coast, penned an article that will appear in the next edition of the Journal. Here are a few photos that he sent to niceness.

hey guys - continuing to do lots of reading and preparing for the big move from KY out to Frisco. This blog is really helping me get my surf on. Finally figured out that I won't be able to walk to the beach from Nob Hill. TOTALLY SUXS!!!! You guys posted some great info on all your boards lately. I figured out last night that I'll start my "Quiv" with three: a mini short "triper" or "shredder", a "potatoe chip" and fat "Log." Do you think I'll be hooked up for all conditions?

Also, not sure if this is old info but there seems to be some good spots to surf south of the ocean beach. All these places are in Sam Mateo county. The problem is that is looks really in the country. I've had that all my life. I really want to stay focused on the city scene near the ocean beach. Let me know if I should ck out those other spots.

All for now. the surf is up.

Posted by: kloo at August 19, 2005 11:25 AM

'Total Newbie' you've come to the right place! Yeeehhaaaaaaa. More info here that you could find in one of those old time SURFER mag wave guides. All these guys here are masters of all board shapes and can pretty much hold their own at places like 'Pipe' and 'Teahoopo'. I've seen Kaiser pull backwards airials on waves under the bridge; total slop but man can that guy ride!
I'll tell you a secret, shhhh now, keep it quiet: "The Spot" is along Devil's Slide, approx 3 miles south of the signpost up ahead.

Lenny Peaslee, executive chef at the Stoughton Country Club, said the twister tore the roof off as about 40 people took refuge in the basement.

Why would anyone leave the bluegrass state?

Posted by: at August 19, 2005 11:43 AM

More than half of the bluegrass state is dry, mostly the southern half. You gotta drive north, buy beer, and then drive back south. Or drive south to Tennessee, where a beer store sits on the border. Unless it is a dry county in Tennesse or a Sunday, in which case you are screwed.

Posted by: at August 19, 2005 11:45 AM

But hey, totaly newbie look out for the hardcore Cali locals, especially in the city! these guys are really protective of this wonderland of perfect waves we have here, they try to preserve and protect the rich culture of san francisco surfing, at all costs! 'cept when they're computers busted.

not sure if there are too many (if any sugar magnolia/fire on the mtns.

If you are looking for Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mtn (Scarlet/Fire) you'll be happy to know that it was a concert staple of the Dead, appearing on average every 5-6 shows after 1974.

Every deadhead has a favorite Scarlet/Fire. I personally felt that 5/6/77 at Barton Hall in Cornell would have to be ranked up there with any Scarlet Fires and is a must have at the very least, for any serious collector.

1977 was a peak year for many songs by the dead with Keith Godchaux really feeling it on the grand piano and the band playing long, luxurious, melodic, intstrumentals.

Posted by: at August 19, 2005 11:58 AM

yes excuse me...5/8/77 is the correct date. set 2.

Sugar Magnolia > Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain

Not unlike this show below:

03/27/88 (Sun) Hampton Coliseum - Hampton, VA
Set 1: Iko Iko, Little Red Rooster, Stagger Lee, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Cumberland Blues > Me & My Uncle, To Lay Me Down, Let It Grow

Set 2: Sugar Magnolia > Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Scarlet Begonias, Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World > Drums > Jam > Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad > I Need A Miracle > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Sunshine Daydream, E: U.S. Blues

Hey Now Niceness !!! Woohooo. WAHOO MY TACO!
Can hardly wait for the offshores and pefectly groomed waves of October. - I sure hope niceness posts as many pics of OB as they did last year. - Shit, I could hardly believe my eyes! Imagine me in Boston contemplating a dot.commie move to the west coast and then seeing the glory of the beach revealed in pic's !!! I said, " Goodbye Beantown - Hello sunshine!"
All this last month I've been working on purchasing all new surf gear for myself. I think I've got everything covered. WISE really helped me out. The helpful open-minded staff was informed and open to my various questions, whims and needs; being new to the Bay Area and all - originally from Boston where I used to rip Winthrop and Marblehead! I bought a new Billabong wetsuit, a new BLUE brand "fun" board and a copy of the new TSJ - whew hoo! Looking at it makes me want to beat off. At SF surf shop I spied the swizzler fin and thought,
' ...whoa - this is werid, but I like it', so Blahblahclaimerstah is going to customize it to fit my new fun board. Can't wait - lol Blahblahstah!
At Aqua on Haight I went for the new racks - the soft version that sit atop my '94Eurovan emblazened with that cool Aleks Petroglyph drawn Tiki head - fucking cool as shit I am now driving around town - proud and out! I AM A SURFER AND I AM SOOOO BITCHEN!
At Mollusk I picked up a few new ill-fitting made for a 13 year old boy tee's (bit tight and the shirt falls just above me waistline), a pair of Havaiian flip-flops and some wax for my new stick.
I cannott wait until the season starts here. People teall me that this is summer - the same as all the old summer's - some good some bad - this is the law of the land - the way it is here.
Is it cool to paste a SURFRIDER FOUNDATION sticker on my wife's 2005 Volvo or is that asking for trouble with the hardened locals? If I paste stickers on my car am I inviting a break-in?

yes kookdom. agreed. with reprises and teases set lists and segues could get long and twisted up so i try to be very general for those that it won't matter to (yet as they begin to sample)

but yes mexi. sugaree was another song that stood out among many in 1977. the boston show's the nights before cornell and i believe DC shows immediatly following are all precious.

much of this comes from not just the band and the groove they were in through the northeast and mid atlantic on that swing and entire year.....but the release of the show's recordings at soundboard quality as a result of betty cantors bankruptcy (betty boards) in the analog day's those recordings were as crisp as it got and every true dead head loves the hiss from the tape deck heads.

1971 and 1972 shows at fillmore east and capitol theater in NY are also stand out with the (4/29/71) "2nd that Emotion" and later in the set GDTRFB being highlights

don't mistake balls for experience. OB is one of the least beginner friendly breaks on the coast once winter kicks in. Once you get here you will personally learn that, and also find out the mellower spots. At OB, keep it head high and under and stay out of everybody's way, and you will survive. Board-wise, most start with a barn door and get smaller as they learn.
