Tangy torrid phlegmy grog.
An evil spirit settles in.
Spacy, aching, feverish funk.
Rise too fast and watch things spin.

Virus, parasites, bacteria goo
Strive for life, they feed off you.
Death fuels life, the eternal rumble.
Mercurial body, makes you humble.

sounds like you're still not feeling well. some fun surfables after work yesterday.

Posted by: lerm at July 14, 2005 10:02 AM

Highlight from yesterday's board:

Fucktard.

I love it. Kdalle asked me this morning if I thought the water tasted more salty. Doof and I traded off on my 8'0 Eaton Bonzer, and R3W's 6'8" Campbell Brothers Bonzer. Kdalle had the advantage on his 'crowdpleaser'.

I need to surf the marginal days more often.

"I need to surf the marginal days more often"
Me too! I think when you see the ocean everyday it makes it harder to surf marginal conditions- for me anyways

OK had some random thoughts the other day, not sure if this topic has been discussed. It seems like every outdoor sport (man vs natural force) has some sort of rating system that lets people know the level of difficulty they are getting into. Obviously something like climbing which is a static environment is easy, (although ratings have been downgraded as skill level has increased) But other dynamic water sports like whitewater kayaking/rafting (the Class I-VI system). Skiing/snowboarding the circle/ square/ diamond system etc.

Sooo Is anyone aware of any rating system other than the highly debated "size" + insert flowery adjective ever being applied to surfing? Aren't there some green circles/ black diamonds floating around in Santa Cruz? Maybe surfing is just too dynamic of an environment such as our local fav can encompass all conditions know to surfing. Or maybe a classification system would require the "outing" of secret spots etc- identify beaches as surfing beaches etc. Not that I would ever necessarily encourage a rating system just more curious. Maybe a system like the "new Aid ratings" could apply? Any thoughts?

NBD- No big Deal
NTB- Not to Bad
PDH- Pretty Darn Hard
DFU- Don't Fuck Up

Posted by: artifact at July 14, 2005 10:44 AM

In order to have rating system, you need a naming system (surfing maps are a no-no), and people are so anti that, maybe that's why it hasn't been more formalized.

It might help relieve and or regulate some crowds (imagine a sign at every reef in SC with the prevailing tag for the spot and a diamond or circle - he, he), but most people speak to eachother as such-and-such break is a beginner's, intermediate, or expert-only venture.

Posted by: friend #1 at July 14, 2005 10:51 AM

Artifact - wannasurf.com offers some labels for particular breaks though I don't think they are very accurate. All Surfers, Experienced, Pro/Kamikazi I believe are the three ratings for a particular break. They have to do with wave power and average size, type of bottom - razor reef versus sand or rock (flat rock bottom versus bolders) and I suppose depth of the reef would be a factor.

With that, I guess Lindy would be all surfers, OB or the Lane would be experienced, and Pipeline would be Pro/Kamikazi. Seems a couple other categories would be needed for clarification.

Posted by: Dennis at July 14, 2005 10:57 AM

How was the surf this a.m.? The swell?

Caught many a wave last night. Was really fun out there --challenging with the wind, but there were waves to test every skill level. Nothin' like the feelin' of "wow/holy shit, I made it' when you go flyin' through the air and make the drop/turn. Mother ocean is so great. Wish people would refrain from polluting it.

Posted by: amigoism at July 14, 2005 11:18 AM

This depends on the waves too much. Some days OB is for beginners, somedays for intermediate surfers, and somedays for experienced surfers.

Posted by: Joe O at July 14, 2005 11:19 AM

After several days surfing Lake Sonoma, it was fun to catch a few here late morning. Nothing great, but some fun, chunky ones; worth the paddle.

Posted by: kloo at July 14, 2005 11:20 AM

Speaking of ratings, I'm thinking about getting a Honda Element. Anybody have any first hand experience with this vehicle?

Posted by: Dennis at July 14, 2005 11:21 AM

awesome album!!

Posted by: e at July 14, 2005 11:21 AM

Yeah I think its likely to remain like a game of Mad Libs. It's just funny that they has never been any consensus, everywhere has it's own system. As many awnsers as opinions

I went out _____ (surf spot) It was a ______ (adjective to describe size) ________ (number 1-20) feet ,______ (surf adjective)and ______ (random psychedelic phrases)

Surfrider will be holding elections in a few weeks. If you're looking for a community service type activity that involves surfing, then I encourage you to swing by. Most of the positions are pretty low key, and leave it up to the volunteer to decide how much time they want to spend. It'd be great to get some new blood involved, plus there will be beer there. I'll repost closer to the actual date:

I work at Safeway in Strawberry and last night around 1:30am I was putting out the last of the empty veggie crates out back and I here this PSSSSST coming from somewhere in the parking lot and a few seconds later a woman in her mid-thirties peeks her head from the driver window of her car about 15 yards away and says SO ARE YOU DOWN WITH THE LADIES and I was all WHAT? and she says YOU HEARD ME and I say I GUESS SO, WHY and she says BECAUSE YOU LOOK LIKE YOU ARE and I didn't know what to say so she gets out of her car and walks towards me and I can see as she gets closer that she is beautiful except for the WHOLE LEFT SIDE OF HER SCALP IS SHAVED AND THE OTHER HALF IS FEATHERED SHOULDER LENGTH just like Kristy McNichol way back when and she's holding two huge tweezers - swear - like the biggest tweezers you have EVER SEEN and they are hooked together by a thick black cord and I started to freak inside a little bit thinking this is not the way I want to die out back behind Safeway smelling like rotten spinach leaves and bludgeoned to death by a pair of tweezers so I say WHAT'S UP? in a deep voice and she keeps walking towards me and when she's about 10 feet away she says with a smile THIS LADY NEEDS A JUMP START and lifts up the tweezers and I see that it's actually just a pair of jumper cables and inside I was like OH MY GOD I'M A MORON and exhaled a deep breath and say SURE so I grab my truck and drive it next to hers and help her jump her car but I was too afraid to ask what's up with the half shaved scalp before she winked and said THANKS MAN and drove off. Anyway back to cruising the personals just thought I'd give you a break.

Posted by: at July 14, 2005 11:43 AM

what the hells up with that? why doesnt she just ask for a jump instead of being down with the ladies... i was expecting some kinda donkey punch story too =(

Posted by: weems at July 14, 2005 12:07 PM

Just that cover alone makes that album cool.

I'd like to thank mother ocean for some awesome rides after one of the @#@$iest nights in a long time. The Flying Brick felt perfect on some south junk but woe there was torture to be had when I drifted out of the channel and into the inside thump zone. At that point I wanted my other board dropped off via helicopter. Kloo scored the drop of the day though the rest of the wave decided to eat said surfer. On second paddle out I literally bellyrode some punchy whitewater straight OUT to sea. Now that's a first.

Thank god for surfing

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at July 14, 2005 12:19 PM

that story made me hungry for in and out burger.

Posted by: bagel at July 14, 2005 12:19 PM

Ummm Yeah, thanks for the odd story, BTW Strawberry Safeway is under construction and has been closed for about 6 months.

Posted by: Mill Valley Market at July 14, 2005 12:28 PM

Behind the safeway I worked at in Foster City in highschool i would always here some PSSSST's coming from behind the dumpster but they were always my buddies waiting for the 12 packs i threw over to them. Ahhh we drank good some nights.

Posted by: Hb at July 14, 2005 12:44 PM

am report--
out at a south wind protected break in san mateo county about 7-9am glassy shoulder high peaks breaking both left and right ...right's reformed on the inside, with the help of a couple a cutbacks, offering a nice long ride all the way to the beach follwed by an easy paddle out aided by the rip along the rocks. lefts seemed to hold up for some longer face time but were followed by a real bitch of a paddle back out
almost got speared by my buddy taking off and not seeing me paddling inside poor guy had to abandon an otherwise insanely clean wave. i owe him one
actually i owe alot of people one, hence the name.

Posted by: snake at July 14, 2005 12:48 PM

yeah hb,
i had a buddy in high school who worked as a "stock boy" at a liquor store after school. He used to "dump" a case of tall buds every friday night -- party, get down with the ladies

so i saw red rocks, jackson, the gorge, tahoe
and the greek. all were fun and good shows.
wsp sounds super tight. have to give the big
BIG ups to the gorge. second night was ridiculous.
also the smokestack/ lightning > jack at the greek
night one was stellar. was stoked that they played it
the second time in 15 years.

most shows i have seen since 1991 dead spring tour.
felt like a 25 year old. yahoo!!

if you can go to the wiltern GO!

got back into the water this p.m. too

remember folks, SURFING IS FUN!!

How 'bout posting a Betty Davis (Miles' wife) LP cover. They say she's different...good, raw, suggestive ffffunk. Classics such as, "If I'm in luck, I might get picked up." Nasty, nasty, nasty.

Back in the day
when there was THE WAY
before instant information
became an infestation
expereince taught you the ins and outs
of when to surf and where you should paddleout

now it's "all good" and "where is the love"
as some newbie bails thier board in the middle of your nug

if you are at a spot where your are just in the way
please consider somewhere else to play

Sam Flores's stuff gets better and better....

I like to rip through the rocks, over the walls and directly into the Sutro Baths. On south swells. From time to time.

Holy Cow I just saw Bow Wow (who is indeed still very lil) in London last Wed. His 6-8 350 lb security guard would have no problem eating him.

I thought that was pretty cool until trains started blowing up. Also, the surf in London is really bad (tide swings are huge, like 20 ft).

while ob is doing its seasonal ebb, over in france a couple hundred of the best riders in the world (actually it's down to 160 or so) are throwing down! Nobody rides the Tour for training. And the man from texas is looking good for his 7th. Outdoor life is soo cool in the morning. whereas ob may be cold, but it won't be cool. here's hoping for a couple cold ones.
