Could it be???

Looks gray and ominous on the cams this morn'. Probably better than it looks out there, but certainly not convincing enough to coax oneself out of a warm cotton burrito.....especially given the tornados, opposable thumbed sharks and lightning storms of yesterday.

I've got a 10am meeting so have to get this done quick, stream of consciousness coming at you. A recent copy of Business Week's cover proclaimed how blogs will change your business!! Your business needs a blog!!! Blogs are the next big thing!! The article went into depth about how companies need to leverage the power of blogs and the affinity groups/loyalty they create to profit. In fact, some companies already have blogs out there that where the blogger occasionally touts their product(s), their great experiences with, etc. Non-visual product placement for the web I suppose. What if e's site and all it encompasses is really just part of the master plan courtesy of the great retail minds at Wyzokwa? Did they have the foresight to partner up and hire a bay area surf advocate? The surf community here is small enough that it would be a fairly cost effective plan. Hire your prototypical guitar playing, marijuana dabbling, footbag playing surfer. Make sure he's down to earth, realizes his strengths and weaknesses and communicates well with a keyboard. Make sure he never has any retail allegiance so that the master scheme never becomes obvious. Give him a platform and stay out of his way, as his good vibes and rose colored glasses help grow your bottom line. The more frequently the bay area surfs, the more gear that gets worn out, the more product that needs to be purchased. More product purchased = volume buying discounts = higher profit margins at the retail shop level. Would we be smart enough to see thru it? Would we care? Would knowing our community was started with capitalistic intentions change all the niceness it's brought?

Quick comment/thought out there for all the parents as I've had a lot of thought provoking conversations with friends who are either new parents, expecting, or expecting a second. As a parent, what is the one thing you want your kids to look back on when you're gone and say "________ is what I took away from my parents" As a parent what is the one thing you'd like to see your kids do that would validate all the hard work and make it successful??

Alright, meeting time, will post some pics later.

I caught a long time ago that e- is joined at the hip with the corporate retail giants of america and the local independents as well...in my meager attempt to thwart whatever gain those entities may achieve i always do my shopping for wetsuits, new boards, even wax cakes when i am out of town...

"Self-reliance" says this dad.

Based on the number of parked cars at the seasonal spot, a lot of folks were chasing the South. Fog was too thick to confirm this as I drove by.

Blakestah, Doof, Jason (?) and I chose to ride the windswell and caught some fun ones at the quirky spot.

Traded off with Doof my 9'6" LB and R3W's 6'10" bonzer.

It's been 20 years since I surfed a board under 7 feet long. I could see it for a point break, but with the OB current, I don't know.

The take-offs reminded me of that Laurie Anderson song where she talks about Walking and Falling at the same time. You paddle to get in position for the fall down the face, and as you fall, you stand up, and the ride begins.

On the Long board you paddle to get momentum and time it so that you can stand as the wave begins to break.

Very different approaches to the same act.

I hope to get some better waves soon to try that stick out on.

j, this is bigger then the local shops. i understood e was backed by quiksilver, billabong, oneill, and globe. this consortium was stitched together by Bob Carillo, and his BVB Management Consultants LLC. The concept was exactly as you stated using a BLOG create a personna, build a community, and through casual brand referncing position the consortium brands into the community. The consortium doesn't disclose actuals but has hinted that it's acheived it's goal of increasing revenue of those brands by 31% in the Bay Area. The increase in soft goods alone prompted Aqua to open the second shop, funded largely through soft dollar MDF kickbacks from BVB LLC.

I've heard that CI, Rusty, Volvo, Surftech and Red Bull are all in discussions with BVB LLC. They goal is to franchise his concept in surf regions around the world. E's not in Baja, but interviewing potential "regional e's" in LA, San Diego, Seaside Or, NYC (yes, you seen the recent NYT article(s) and Perth AU.

Kaiser is in Mexico, not surfing but on an extensive photo assignment. Kaiser is secretly funded by: Trojan, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Reef and wickedweasel.com.

Got some fun lil' waves yesterday evenin'. 'Twas nice after not being in the water for a month. Mellow, reasonably smooth waves. Sounded good through the fog this a.m., but was tubed in flannel--could not muster the gumption to face bone-chillin' water. Could not see anybody out through the fog, but I'm sure there were some nice lil' treasures pealing this way and that.

i woke up at 4am stressing about work related stuff and did my usual "try to visualize surfing some really good waves and go back to sleep." which led me to think about this past winter and the many amazing double-ought days and rides. and then my mind started wondering, at what size waves do you HAVE to take that breath, bail the board and dive as deep as you can? and how about sets that are coming in big and fast?

i almost always death-grip my board when out in waves with size. but there are times when that lip is coming down hard and fast which warrants the deep plunge. dunno - something to think about at 4am.

on another note - i'm looking to buy a beater long board or softtop for my girlfriend. i bought her a wettie and took her out last weekend for her first norcal cold-water session but she couldn't balance on my 8' fun board. if anybody has something to sell, let me know at rich dot cave at mindspring dot com.

J. I think you're getting a bit paranoid. All these SF surfer hippies are the same! Haha, I've actually been following up on that too. It actually inspired me to make my own blog. http://aloha2ian.modblog.com. It's to document my trip so my friends and family can check up on where I am, etc. etc. Cadaver. that is insane. Thanks for that.

Great Post Cadaver!

That would look even cooler if somehow he changed those brown "nuts' into waves. Then, I'd really be mezmerized.

Got a new job and will be visiting the costal colleges and Universities from Monterey to San Fran. and places north a few times a month. Surfing will make the commute to those spots from Auburn worth it. I also have the Sierra schools too- great for some of the snowier days. Sorry to toot my horn, but I am stoked about my job right now!

See ya out there!

Cool site Ian. Looks like you're ready to go. A trip like yours is something to aspire towards one day, before too many responsibilities kick in! Makes me want to quit my job right now.

A great friend did a similar trip except went to S. Pacific and S. Africa instead of CA/SA. Came back w/ like 300$ to his name and the items on his back! It was an epic trip for him and those memories makes it almost bearable now that he lives in Michigan.

Let me know if you need any extra Central or South America (especially Chile) dl beta before you trip. Been around many of those spots- off the beaten path more or less artifactphoto at yahoo.com

Totally in agreement there. Worked like a charm yesterday. However, today I fell down the face, and..well, fell down the face, then the face fell on me. Speaking of face, mine froze in this frigid water. Brrrrr! Fun in 2-3 foot juiceless stuff, foghorn braying, and Kloo? Last seen eaten up by fog.

Drifting north just a few blocks 9 - 11, different places were SO different. Started with peaky fun, then nothing, then more peaky fun, then close-outs, then soft scrambled fizzlers. Lots of surfers out by 10 despite the at best fair-minus conditions; obviously a lot of pent up demand out there.

3to5setsof7 - Holy Shit! You totally NAILED it! And the deviously beautiful thing is, most of us think you're just joking.
Re: parents / kids - I agree with friend #1, self reliance is all important. Help them realize that they can take care of themselves better than anyone else can - that they can decide best what they need and want and that they have the best handle on how to go about getting it. To accomplish that goal it's important to expose your kids to all kinds of stuff, literature, art, music, travel - if at all possible. Teach them how to cook and use basic handtools. Turn them on to the stuff that you are most interested in (Kaiser might want to be careful about that one). If they see you getting excited about something, they'll learn that it's cool for them to be excited too. There's nothing sadder than to see an older kid pretending to be bored with life because somebody shot 'em down whenever they got jazzed about something.
Your kids will learn their basic values and attitudes from you by the time they're six or seven, maybe earlier. After that they'll be busy developing their own personal style and tastes based on their interactions with friends and other kids. So get your licks in while you can and keep reinforcing those basic lessons as they grow. Basta!

Caveman, I saw a couple beater longboards for sale on Craigslist last night. I'm gonna do an arvo session today, conditions be damned. Shoulda this am but laziness set in.

I wonder if I leave my dirty socks on the floor, would my wife throw me out? Then I could follow Ian around the globe. Especially since he's done all the research and legwork. Hmmm. Maybe a good idea to travel two days behind Ian's schedule. That way he could figure out the area before I get there. Great time saver for my trip. Hmmm. Hey Ian, I think that blog will really help me out! Truely envious ya know.

So antman and I paddled back in today at around noon after a "we're too late but let's surf anyway" sess at VFWs when right there next to our car in the parking lot was a pot bust going on. No joke. It was a 40 year old black dude and his cute girlfriend standing next to their late model sedan with two park rangers checking their car for dope. After only a couple minutes they pulled out a baggie of the green stuff, perhaps enough for 6 ro 8 joints. Busted.

antman was saying he thinks it's only a misdemeanor when just then the cop pull out a scale from the trunk of his cruiser. Depends on how much I guess.

Anyway, let this be a warning to anyone of us unfortunate enough to have to drive to the beach. Keep the stuff at home! It's not worth getting the friggin' Park police on yer ass. Poor sap was just trying to hang with his lady and smoke a J at the beach on a foggy, otherwise pretty depressing day at OB.

Just wanted to remind people that "alot" should be seperated into "a lot". It's probably the most frequently made grammatical error.
I ain't got none good reason for lettin' ya'lls know, but I reckon i'd just reports what I'd be seein'. Cheers.

Posted by: grammer nazi at June 9, 2005 03:46 PM

Watch out! The parking lots are under federal jurisdiction, not state. Federal laws are different and severe. The typical Park Police/Ranger's m.o. is to cruise the lots looking for expired car registrations. This gives them cause to question the occupants. If he smells it, you're screwed. A guy parked next to me this morning opened his door and I got a contact high. Told him this is not a cool place to light up.

Oh yeah, got a few waves this a.m. at the secret spot. Not as clean as yesterday. Some interesting double waves. The second one was usually bigger and right behing the first. Drop in and almost ride up the back of the first wave. Cool view.

Posted by: kdalle at June 9, 2005 03:52 PM

I think "seperated" should be spelled "separated" unless the joke started in the first line, Grammer Nazi.
