Somewhere...
All I've seen/felt/heard over the past few days is wind wind wind. I'm guessing those who live within eyeshot of the beach were able to score a few mini-sessions as mother nature caught her breath inbetween blows. For the rest of us, take solace in knowing that somewhere in the world, right now...
-a perfect, glassy wave is reeling off unridden at a left point
-a young kid just got pushed into his first wave, stood up and screamed while the rest of the lineup watched inbetween sets, killing all vibe in the water
-a large amount of grains are sitting in hot water, beginning the process of becoming your favorite beer
-a teenage kid who was inspired by (insert favorite artist here) just purchased his first guitar and will eventually change music history
-a ridiculously well built, attractive young woman wearing kaiser's favorite outfit for women is laying out on the beach watching an overweight, hairy guy surf like a kook and thinking too herself how hot he is (ok, this one is pure fantasy and added just to make myself feel better)
-sands are shifting unbeknownst to us, creating the next great sandbar that will light up our summer and we'll talk about for the next 10 years

Well done J. I knew it was you when I read, "a large amount of grains are sitting in hot water, beginning the process of becoming your favorite beer".
i've loathed spring since i was a grom. at least we have skateparks now.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at June 6, 2005 09:06 AMThanks J!
I checked out the opening of the new Aqua on Haight on Sat night. It's a nice shop, I hope they do well, it is so far inland but maybe those N Judah riding car-less folks will shop there. I lived on Haight street a while and N trained it to the beach when I was a young buck. I only hung out at Aqua for 5 minutes I'm a snoozer not shmoozer. but free beer has its lure.
Posted by: Mexi at June 6, 2005 10:45 AMJ is that Yukatat?
Posted by: Mexi at June 6, 2005 10:53 AMThat 'young kid' snaked me! On his first wave! Then he screamed at me at the top of his lungs! Ouch.
Posted by: He SnakeMe at June 6, 2005 10:55 AMBeing that surf shops gain most profit from clothing and accessories, it could be a good move to pickup tourist business using attraction of surfing.
Posted by: Dennis at June 6, 2005 11:02 AMTourists will snag those Aqua Surf Shop t-shirts and sweatshirts with San Francisco printed on them. I hope they do well also.
checked out the new aqua shop on saturday night (unfortunately after the beer was dusted). it looks pretty sweet. the first year will probably be rough, but if they make it through that i think they're gonna make a killing at that location.
Posted by: bbr at June 6, 2005 11:28 AMHey 3 to 5, I lost your email and have an invite to send. You too Mexi. madisoncuckoo at yahoo
The surf was actually looking "good" early this morning, which must be dementia based hallucination only. When the wind blows hard from a certain NW angle, a roof vent in my closet starts banging up and down at random intervals with terrific volume. BANG BANG BANGITY BANG BANG BANG. This makes the dog get hyper, jump around, and roar at the Danger. The incredible racket can last for hours. Predicting a desperado am sesh soon.
Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at June 6, 2005 11:33 AMmexi, yukatat it is (guessing the snow covered peaks in the background were the giveaway). never been, but it's on the long list of places to go to. you been?
Posted by: j at June 6, 2005 11:36 AMso, they'll have two locations now?
Posted by: steamwand at June 6, 2005 11:39 AMman, i never shop. i can't even remember the last time a bought a surf related article. i am still using the wax john gave me when i picked up my new board, and that was months ago. if surf shops depended on me for biz, they'd all be bankrupt. luckily there are tons of folks who don't surf but wear the gear.
i'm gonnna need a new swim suit for hawaii in july so maybe i'll go there.
So what's with all the surf shops starting second locations? Wise has a second shop now on La Playa that has all their clothes and fashion gear. Checked it out on Sat, but can't see it really working for them -- it's totally hidden and out of the way. If anyone's interested, though, you can get a $20 off coupon fron the old shop.......
Posted by: limevoodoo at June 6, 2005 11:51 AMPicked up my board from the old Aqua on Saturday (fin repair). My wife saw a pair of jeans that was apparently cheaper there than elsewhere and ended up buying them. So that's my yearly purchase. :)
Posted by: Nate at June 6, 2005 12:11 PMI haven't been to Yukatat but i will someday, I heard they have good fishing and a fun little beach break. The mountain range gave it away.
Posted by: Mexi at June 6, 2005 12:19 PMRevolution for the ocean -Dr. Wallace J. Nichols
Our lives are a gift from the ocean. The air in our lungs, the water we drink, our climate and our food supply are all signature gifts of a blue planet. The ocean is what makes this world a shelter for us; we owe much less to the scattering of dry land we tend to think of as the earth. Our base survival and our greatest dreams all thrive on a generous brew of salt water.
In a year when the ocean was best known for her fury, it's at our own risk that we take her considerable gifts for granted.

Posted by: Ian at June 6, 2005 02:01 PMnice one, j! mighty impressive, this subbing for the sub...
somewhere in the world, just the other night, there was the most incredible display of coastal shooting stars that i've ever seen. better than Leonid a few years back because there wasn't a moon out.
my friend had the brilliant plan to drive out to the coast at 8:00, throw our bags in the dunes, and wait/pray for early AM glassiness. we got the glass, but the size was somewhere around ankle to midcalf. so...it was hilarious. but more than enough to get me through. lots of fun rides with no fear of whitey, even with fishing boats all along the horizon and sea lions everywhere.
but the reason i bother to mention it doesn't have so much to do with the microsurf as it does the falling asleep looking at all those stars, with those hazy stars behind the haziest stars. i love that view. it always make me feel like i'm in the right place, no matter where i am...it's quite possibly the second or third best feeling in the world. waves in the AM were a bonus.
so thanks for that, ma'am earth and mother universe. sorry for the whopper post. some mondays you just gotta share the love.

Friendly, nice post. My boy and I were up looking at Jupiter through his teloscope that same night (I'm guessing), and we saw some amazing, super-bright, slow-ish moving shooting stars (compared to the more numerous, but quicker and dimmer Leonids a couple of years ago). Pretty! (But we did it from across the street, so missed out on the night under the stars and the morning microsurf.)

Posted by: at June 6, 2005 04:06 PM$350? That price is unfair! I hope the poor fool will take more if I offer it. I'm thinking closer to $500, after all that work on the buckle and the tail, and that custom sun-tan must have taken YEARS . . .

Posted by: kloo at June 6, 2005 04:15 PMMissed that meteor shower, but had the chance to enjoy the pre- dawn stars climbing up Shasta. The annual Perseids in August are always pretty sweet.
Definately a highlight watching that transistion from a moonless night into day. The stars were so bright you didn't even need a light. While it lived up to the "lindy" sytle kooky crowds, it sure humbled me more than Lindy ever has. The again maybe that was my ridiculous 40 pound pack filled with all my alpine ski gear. It was worth it though, for that corntastic June snow! Amazing mountain.
Posted by: artifact at June 6, 2005 04:19 PMyeah, that surfboard posting is hilarious. the kicker is really the $90 beat-up sponge.
Posted by: steamwand at June 6, 2005 04:20 PMpeople do pay ridiculous sums of money for longboards that have seen better days, though.
btw, i have six year old, once broken 9'6" arrow for sale. great for learning. $500.
Just got a new quart of resin to finish up a hotcoat on my board. Goddamn i fucking hate the surf-posturing that goes on in surf stores. The too-cool-to-help-you kind. I do however love asking a question, that i know the answer to, and just listening to them try to fumble around with it while acting all cool and answering in a way that is like i-am-so-cool-that-i-shouldn't-even-be-answering-this-question kind of way.
but i gots my resin.

Posted by: kloo at June 6, 2005 08:22 PMi just spent the entire day (less surf-blogging) at an industry schmoozefest in which the industry forgot to show up. i actually had to put on a suit/tie - good news, apparently ties and shit don't go out of style, cuz everyone else had on similar! felt so damn good to put on shorts and a t- again, i remember why i got out of the suit and tie scene....altho i do miss the close proximity to happy hours.
