dainty

went out with the novia this morn.
Chilly, grey onshore dawn.
Inner-bar divots and grumpy nothings.
vertically challenged.
CJ did awesome and snagged a few waves without me yelling, "GO GO GO GO!!"
She's juuuuust entering into that long path of discovery.
All the subtleties of the art are dawning on her.
Reading and interpreting waves as they approach.
Predicting the manner in which waves will break.
Understanding the tugs and pulls of OB currents.
Taking beatings in stride.
Standing up at the right time.
Going with the ocean instead of against it.
Getting out past the breakers.
Scanning the horizon for telltale signs.
Putting yourself in the right position before the waves come.
Listening to your intuition when choosing where to wait.
Putting yourself in harms way.
Experimenting on which waves are best by trying to go on as many waves as possible.
Charging!
Laughing (hopefully).
having fun.

she got thonked on the forehead by her board this morning. D'oh! While sitting a bit too far inside this ugly, inner-bar chest-high suckout beast thumped right down on her in about 3 feet of water. I was like, "ooooo".. but.. she popped up like no biggie and came back out for more!! i was proud.

Sooo.. i'm gone until June 13. Maybe Kaiser will take over the daily updates? haven't talked to him about it yet. Kaiser?

Lerm, mwsf and i are headed down to Baja Sur for two weeks of camping and wave-riding. My friend is also getting married in Cabo on saturday so it should be a rager. psyched!

good waves and good times to everybody out there.

thanks for reading and participating!

Go see a baseball game.

e, if you guys hit todos santos. find antijitos mysol, for killer sopes, etc. marysol and ishmael(sp?) are just the nicest folks and have a great vibe to them. across the street is an ice cream shack, go for the limon, it rules. perfect after a marathon session at one of the local breaks.

if your coming up north from cabo, antijotos is on the main drag. make a right at the stop sign on hiway 1. head up the street and a hill. on your right there is a pharmacy and the ice cream shack, antijitos marysol is across the street on the left.

I hope you guys catch it all time everywhere! Have a groovy trip amigos!

Have a great trip you guys. It looks like there's some energy moving that way late next week. You may have some good 1.5+ OH waves by next weekend.

Posted by: Dennis at May 26, 2005 10:50 AM

E, I am in! Saves me from posted pics all day. But, I am running to Mainland Mex from June 4th to June 11th so we might need a "stand-in, stand-in".

We can discuss over email.

Yeah, couldn't find the mojo this morning. The wind looked to have died last night and I thought about it. However, the blanket of fog out my window told me not to move at 6:00 this morning.

I am going to Guerrero, who's got something for me?

Posted by: Kaiser at May 26, 2005 10:54 AM

Buen viaje muchachos!

Make sure to bring a mask/snorkel. A worthy flat surf side trip is in La Paz- Go with a dive operator or hire a fisherman from the harbor (20$ or so) to take you out to the lighthouse/island of la Reina- Probably one of the best places in the Sea of Cortez to swim with the Giant Mantas- a mind blowing experience if you get lucky enough to see them

Have fun E and friends. Don't forget the duck tape.

Todos is mostly a winter break, and hasn't been the same since Hurricane Juliette deposited tons of sand into the rock bottoms of some of the breaks.

I pulled a nearly-dawn dawn patrol, alarm at 4:50, sadly not parked until 5:30...8 minutes after "civil dawn" but dark enough in the fog. Dude on Kirkam had a solid 5 minutes on me, and a half dozen fisherman were busy casting. The swell-like blip on the buoy showed itself every 10 minutes or so, but I only really caught one of them. The nearly faceless wind waves dragged along the gently sloping bottom to an ignomious demise, not with a bang but a wimper. Perhaps a more astute surfer could find a place that collected more wave energy, but I plopped myself down in the middle of a 3-mile stretch of coast assuming it was all the same, and rode on mushy (albiet clean) waves for an hour. A quarter to seven, three surfers with boards the size of containerships came down the beach as a few fisherman and myself left for work. Those fisherman are hardcore about getting out there early.

Posted by: Andrew on 57th at May 26, 2005 11:10 AM

e - have a great trip!

fun arvo tuesday so i went by yesterday, too small and mushy for me but i did see some decent rides in a certain area named after a certain old time hobo. fish-ing maybe?

for what its worth- someone in the vfw parking lot around 5:45 told me a few people saw a 3ft shark fin. I personally wouldnt let this affect my surf decisions but i figured if i didnt pass this along and someone got chomped this weekend i would feel like shit.

river mouth north of playa kandahar and the tiny fishing village of majahau (see pic) between troncones and saladiatas bueno bueno bueno ..you'll have to drive up the beach a couple of k's to get to the peaks and i can almost guarantee you'll be alone ...of course probably not any more now that i have just spilled the frijoles

I'd question the fin sighting. Yesterday morning I was surrounded by dolphin fins for about 5 minutes. They were pretty big too. One of those suckers surfaced about ten yards from me and was moving toward me on a collision course. Glad it just vanished. Phew. They aint flipper ya know.

Posted by: Dennis at May 26, 2005 11:23 AM

Any of you guys know about this?

www.surfparks.com

Seems it may come to NYC in the future making for perfect waves in the butt cold days of winter and only a subway ride away.

Posted by: TSM at May 26, 2005 11:27 AM

Surfed Kellys predawing and there were some blips of the southie variety every 10 or so minuets. Of note, i did also see a fin this morning but it was of the pourpise variety. He/she was a big sized mammal but not of the chomping sort. Still gets me why they hang out in the cold water when they can go tropical if they want.

Posted by: Cabrillo Racoon at May 26, 2005 11:43 AM

Bottlenose dolphins weigh 500 to 1000 lbs. They may be good natured and all, but I don't want one dropping in on me. I'm afraid of just about everything in the ocean that is over 500 lbs, which seems to be alot of stuff. I'm afraid of most things with fins, and teeth or claws or nematocists. And I also don't like the microbes I can't see. But I think I'm okay with goldfish. Never seem to be any goldfish sitings at VFWs though.

Posted by: Andrew on 57th at May 26, 2005 11:50 AM

ya i was skeptical too, i figure its hard to tell whats a porpoise/dolphin/sea lion/shark/whale from the parking lot but this guy was pretty admamant and said he had binos. Like I said take it for what its worth - it wouldn't keep me out of the water.

Posted by: vons at May 26, 2005 11:52 AM

Are they bottle nose dolphins or bay porpoise?
What ever they are I've been seeing alot of them lately. There after what ever those fishermen are after. One popped up right next to me with a fish in its maw.

Restaurante Santanas in Todos Santos has a good crowd. Right off the plaza by the church, down the hill, or down the stairs through the lobby of the Hotel Todos Santos.

Posted by: myrobothand at May 26, 2005 12:06 PM

all fins/splashes/large figures in the water make me gasp, first, everytime. it's kinda girlie, i know, but that sorta makes sense. some of those barking sea lions can be kinda agro, too...

last summer in baja, at a point up the road that i'm sure you'll check, a manta ray (i think?) fluttered up right below me. you now how clear the water is...and i'd never seen one before...scared the shit out of me! caught my best wave of the trip right after though...ready and willing to paddle into anything.

have a great trip, e! the todos santos restaurant robothand mentioned is tasty but $, in an artgallery gringostyle sort of a way. doubledown on the spf45.

And don't miss the mixtos at Tacos Chilakos either...

Posted by: hrothbart at May 26, 2005 12:16 PM

Mexi, SICK shots of south land. Friendly "some of those barking sea lions can be kinda agro, too..." dude, those things are way more than kinda agro. I'm scared outta my gord of those things. When they swim with their head/body sticking way up, lay down as low as possible on your board. They're competing for territory when they do that. The worst is at Waddel, cuz you always see them swimming around real fast. Always makes me wonder what they're swimming away from so quickly... Good luck to everyone over the weekend getting waves, it's gunna be a zoo.

Posted by: Ian at May 26, 2005 12:27 PM

Tres Hermanos tacos are half the size and they don't have the pickled onions, but again there aren't any waves in the summer there, so why go?

Have fun dude!!! Bring your BOOTIES. A good fishing pole in your board bag can make down time a little more interesting. SURF early and near dusk, find sheltered spots in the arvo. Surf points rather than beach unless its tubbin!!! Dont flop around after waves and dont fall head first. If you have a car dont be afraid of checking out the breaks in the next town. Drink lots of juice and water. PROTECT YOUR BOARDS FROM THE REEFS AND THE ELEMENTS.

ya have a fun one boys! my recomendation is muigel's reasturant..on the main highway just as your getting into todos santos proper on the right side before the stop light. cheaper grubs and muigel is in there chilling, nice fella, makes a great don julio margarita..but as ive mentioned to e you maybe just stop through todos, mexi seems like he knows what hes talking about, the waves i saw did not look that great around there a few weeks ago. i hear the east cape needs a big south which knowing e's luck id say check out that lovely gem of a stretch of coast...and if you stay in todos i say go to la posadas las posas(or something like that)..the best couple ever runs that joint..not so expensive for a nights stay either unless your camping exclusively...be safe homies, look out for the cows in the road at night..

we're also not sure about our soft-rack/straps situation. We think that we're renting a SUV (Xterra hopefully) vehicle.

I was wondering, do most suicidal people drive to the bridge to jump off or is it a spur of the moment thing. I mean, if you took the time to drive to the bridge and walk out there, would a fence prevent you from jumping? I think not. I think this is gonna be an expensive, useless project.

In an All-in-the-Family episode, liberal daughter Gloria was soapboxing to her right-wing blue collar father (Archie) about the murder rate due to guns. Gloria said guns should be illegal. That way, people would stop be murdered by guns. Archie replied, "Would it make you feel better if they was pushed outta windows instead?"

Posted by: at May 26, 2005 01:55 PM

Went out 9-ish mid-beach seeing no one else out anywhere. Three joined me soon after, though. I guess I had found THE peak. From shore it looked like it might be more fun than it looked, but no, it only looked that way. A few pretty fun 3-footers lined up nicely for my fishish board.

Good fun and good waves, E!

Posted by: kloo at May 26, 2005 01:59 PM

Yeah e, word to the wise, you "think" you're renting an SUV but you will wind up with whatever they have. We "thought" we were renting a Suburban for 7 of us, (we had reservations, anyway), but there were none when we got there. We wound up with a small pickup truck and a beetle. It was all good, as you know attitude is everything.

Have a great time! I love it down there, especially when I'm out of Cabo proper.

Posted by: con at May 26, 2005 02:02 PM

Posted by: Dennis at May 26, 2005 02:18 PM

speaking of oysters yup......ladies she won't ignore you either and can go down on 46 in 10 minutes.

Posted by: at May 26, 2005 02:20 PM

I prefer renting cars even if they have an SUV available. The logic is everybody trashes rental SUVs, whereas the cars are almost never taken off road, so your chances of getting a lemon are greatly reduced when you rent a car (I confirmed this renting several times in CR). Besides, it's not the rainy season down there, so a car will be able to get you most anywhere you need to go... Have a great trip E!

Posted by: surfseeker7 at May 26, 2005 02:21 PM

Well, I'm not so sure about your logic surfseeker and here's why - I was totally impressed by the way that little beetle could get up and down all those dry washes we took down to isolated beaches off the highway looking for waves. We never got stuck once. What a great car! But you're right, in the end it was way better we didn't have the SUV, I hate them anyway, and there was only two of us surfing and we were able to cram the two boards in and go and leave the truck with the others.

Posted by: con at May 26, 2005 02:32 PM

my dad bumbled the minivan through the east cape a few weeks ago. from la ribera to vinaramos. he would have scored if he surfed. trust me if he can do it. you guys can.

the best car rental tip i can give, is bring a tire pressure guage to balance the air pressure in all 4 tires. it's seems dorky, but it will improve gas mileage, balance grip, handling and braking. important if a cow should suddenly appear. plus your vehicle will feel like a new Al Merrick on a good wave.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at May 26, 2005 03:05 PM

problem with a car for us is that there are 3 of us and we have a whole lot of shit.. guitars, boards, camping shit, etc. soo.. we either needed a minivan or an SUV and they're the same price so we opted for an SUV..

hopefully we'll get a regular sized one and not one of the puny Libertys or some such.

I don't dig on SUVs when there is a single driver on paved roads up here in the states.. but when it's packed to the gills on dirt roads going camping, that's what SUVs are actually made for!

BALI, Indonesia (May 27) -- An Australian woman was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday for smuggling nine pounds of marijuana onto Indonesia's Bali island
Corby was arrested in October after airport authorities found the marijuana in her surfboard bag as she arrived on Bali for a family holiday.

Corby's lawyers alleged the drugs were planted by airport baggage handlers in Australia as part of a drug-smuggling operation and that they ended up in Bali by mistake.
Judge Wayan Suastrawan noted that customs officers testified that Corby looked ''nervous'' and ''tried not to open the bag'' when asked to by customs officials, adding: ''Judges are of the opinion that the accused imported marijuana. She was arrested red-handed at the airport.''
FROM A.P.

Posted by: toneman at May 27, 2005 10:26 AM

Think about all the under paid airport baggage handlers around the world.

Posted by: toneman at May 27, 2005 10:28 AM

They see travelling surfers as rich and love to toss our board bags around. But this sucks.
Why would she risk death to smuggle ?????
Does not make sense . Oh well.

Posted by: toneman at May 27, 2005 10:30 AM

She was nervous because she had 2 boards not one.

Posted by: toneman at May 27, 2005 10:32 AM

RIP
Dale Velzy

Posted by: toneman at May 27, 2005 10:39 AM

Toneman- that is only half the story...there is a suspected Austrailian smuggling involving the Austrailian baggage handlers which is being investigated between Perth to Sidney. They suspect they used her bags unbeknownest to her and were unable to retreive the contents before it went on to Bali. They were not able to bring this into the court since it was an undercover sting operation and one inforant supporting this theory was stabbed in jail.

She is bummed...

Posted by: flap at May 27, 2005 10:42 AM

I'm NOT saying she's guilty but asking why she would risk death to smuggle? Same reason I suppose thousands of people risk death to smuggle - money.

Posted by: jah at May 27, 2005 11:09 AM

I put a new page u on my site... good stuff

Posted by: mexi at May 27, 2005 11:19 AM

Dennis, here's why. Dope is apparently so prevalent and easy to come by in Bali that you'd actually lose money buying it in Australia to sell in Bali. Now, I haven't tried to buy pot in either place but that's what I've read.

Posted by: con at May 27, 2005 11:24 AM

mexi, you have a groovy eye for angles and light.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at May 27, 2005 11:25 AM

So is it grown in Bali or brought in? I guess the cliamte would cooperate... I've also heard that about the cost issue. Again, people are willing to make big risks for money. Somebody is selling it in Bali, which carries a severe penalty - like death.

Posted by: Dennis at May 27, 2005 11:30 AM

There's currently a hot market in Indonesia for dope from Australians. Seems the Balinese are pretty corrupt, and a favorite game is selling Westerners pot, then telling the cops who jail them only to let them out with a substantial payment. So, the market for dope FROM westerners has grown, because Australian dope sellers don't tip off the cops. And the dope is super strong engineered dope, not the same as the weaker varieties grown in Bali.

Corby smuggled pot in, against the law, and is lucky she only got 20 years.
