Posted by: bench dork#1 at May 24, 2005 11:39 AMThey are planning on planting Lessingia and some native Lupine, the lessingia is the same grasses as on most dunes. The iceplant is a bummer, shit is oata control. There was a plan at one time to fell all the western trees in the presidio, the Montery Pine, Cypress and Eucaliptus, but I think they vetoed that one. I'm pretty sure that the Friend of the urban foest is working with the Surfrider Foundation to do the planting... Sean @ Surfrider SF is the man with a plan.

Any tips on mainland mexico spots during this time of year. Guerrero? Colima? Oaxaca?

Posted by: jahmir at May 24, 2005 11:50 AMTucker,
If you're into slowing down and slaloming hills in the Bay Area, you can buy a specialty wheel called the Xtreme S/S Super Slick (http://www.a2xtreme.com/2000/xtwheels.htm). They're super expensive (about $80 for a set of 4 with shipping) and most shops don't carry them, so you have to order them over the web. But I can tell you that once you have these wheels on your longboard, along with Randall 2 trucks or similar, no hill will be too steep. They grip so well you can lean way forward, or way back, just like snowboarding or just like bottom turns at Noriega in the fall. Next disadvantage, these wheels wear out quickly. So it becomes an expensive habit. I discovered this type of downhill boarding in 1999 and started taking the 6 Parnassus up to the top of the Sunset, then I'd slolom down "backside 9" - 9th ave, in heaven the whole way. You don't need to powerslide, and little rocks and gravel just shoot away from the wheels. Once you get good at it, you never need to bomb hills, just make progressively sharper and harder turns the steeper the grade. I could go on, but my work is done here....
Posted by: surfseeker7 at May 24, 2005 12:00 PMJahmir, I might be heading to Guerrero/Colima in a week and half.

try smaller diameter wheels, like the kryptonic route 59's. they are accelerate noticably slower than 65 diameter wheels and above. nice for tighter streets. plus you can use smaller risers, lowering your center of gravity even more.
Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at May 24, 2005 01:33 PMtucker, the key is to "carve" down the hills. Unless speed is your thing. If that's the case, tighten those trucks and bomb that shit. E, that's knarly. Good on scorin on 1. I thought I'd be grumpy after selling my car since I have no means to get to the beach. I'm not though, just stoked it's been so windy. If anyone's looking for a good backpacking backpack, check out the Jansport Klamath. It seriously pairs up with some of the rip-off $400 bags. You can find 'em for $100-150 online. Stoked. Bored? It takes advice from the CCSF Ocean Beach Task Force and Dept. of the Environment as well as the Mayor and Supervisors but in the end it is their decision since the area was handed over by the city. Ad hoc groups such as Surfrider and Friends of Ocean Beach are also peripherally in the mix. It can be very Kafkaesque trying to get anything done.

Posted by: otf at May 24, 2005 03:04 PMWhile looking for some old pictures of the seawall, I found one of this old church (made of horse-drawn cars) on 47th St, about 1908, note that's a good 3 blocks from the water's edge, and look at that sand, sweet sand-bar forming sand.

Posted by: Andrew on 57th at May 24, 2005 03:05 PMcool--thanks, kdalle. do you have any idea when the bathrooms/sloat lot were constructed?
for el grupo: if the sloat lot was demo'd and entirely reconsidered--i mean the entire southern GH area, everything is up for grabs here--what would you want to see in its place? nothing? just dunes? two spigots and a bench? beach chalet II? a surfcheck drivethru? (oh, wait, already have that one...)
i'm thinking about taking on sloat as a little fantasy architecture/landscape project. they're going to have to do something there eventually, once a few more feet of asphalt erode off... consider this contextual research...

The Great Highway should end at Sloat and the Highway between Sloat and Skyline removed extending Fort Funston out to Sloat. If this wre to happen it would lighten up the crowds and make the beach bigger btween Sloat and Funston, If the park service doesn't do it the ocean will take things into her own hands.
Posted by: Mexi at May 24, 2005 03:15 PMmexi's right mother o will take care of the sloat lot---what we need a little help on is that restroom funk hole at judah ... mount a battering ram on the front of the j- train, let's get busy.
Posted by: jay at May 24, 2005 03:26 PMbut if there's no parking lot how can i surf?
Posted by: at May 24, 2005 03:30 PMI called the Public Utilities this am cuz of that storm overflow structure at Vicente on the beach. That thing has become a real hazard. The railings are rotted away leaving razor edges, a manhole cover is missing from the upper section giving a 10 foot drop into a caged stink-box, and the sand has completely disappeared under it. Someone walked between the two big pipes feeding into it the other day and fell through. There is only packed sand in the middle but it looks solid.
Posted by: Dennis at May 24, 2005 03:32 PMotf - my tip for the evening go out is lower your expectations! i am thinking of doing the same.
Posted by: vons at May 24, 2005 03:32 PMthe greater P-town area looked doable yesterday afternoon.. big and whooly.
the jetty was tiny but smooth.
Posted by: e at May 24, 2005 03:37 PMyou oughta see the Vicente storm drain during a hard rain and combined sewer overflow. Crap comes pouring out of there like it is a gigantic firehose. Crap making a fountain 30 feet into the air for no one to see because it is pouring rain. It is a scary fearsome sight.
Posted by: sancho at May 24, 2005 04:16 PMIf you remove the GH around south of Sloat, you better do something with the traffic flow from Sloat to the bypass of the current road. There is plenty of space over there behind the zoo but I highly doubt the city would expand the road over there. Without an expansion of the road there, the GH will not move for a while.
Posted by: Kaiser at May 24, 2005 04:20 PMBad news folks, but as the ocean takes more and more chunks out of Sloat, a sea wall becomes more the likelihood, and not managed retreat (as Surfrider and many others support). Get ready to mobilize and make your voice heard, this will become an issue for public comment soon enough. Solid structure (sea wall) = complete beach erosion and no more surf at Sloat.
Posted by: adam at May 24, 2005 04:22 PMah! adam, i think you and i talked a little about this last spring. didn't we? who was it who had proposed an idea to scoot the GH inland and run it around that supersecret rivermouth?
moving the road inland is feasible, in my little dreamworld. putting the dunes back is the only way to keep the surf and renaturalize the erosion process, from what i understand. but do you think there should be any structure at sloat? near the ocean's edge or in the dunes? bear in mind that i'm leaning in the direction of feasible, real-world scenarios...well, without consideration of title, deed, politics, cost...heh...but traffic (both foot and surfer-carrying cars) is of concern.
Posted by: friendly at May 24, 2005 04:31 PMIn the most recent West Portal Monthly (neighborhood paper) there is an article regarding the beach erosion. A study regarding sand movement is in process and it appears that the powers that be are favoring a soft solution (a combination of sand and rocks) and a seawall is not under consideration.
The bathroom at Sloat was built in the late 80's along with the wastewater treatment plant, the expansion of the GH and the Aves seawall. That was also when they filled in the tunnels.
Personally I think if they had left the pier up at 2nd parkin lot it would have acted like a groin and reduce the erosion. More importantly it would had left those killer sandbars that formed there during those years.
Posted by: kdalle at May 24, 2005 04:33 PMOops, I meant EARLY 80's.
Posted by: kdalle at May 24, 2005 04:35 PMOkay, I'm in the market for a new vehicle, primarily for surf use. I've narrowed it down to a full-size SUV or a cab-over full-size pickup. I plan to be hauling up to two boards at a time, with a combined weight of perhaps fifteen pounds. And that's BEFORE you add wetsuit, leash, AND wax. So should I aim for an engine somewhere in the 5 liter region, right?
Those lots get sandy too. Full-time 4wd, obviously. 8" lift enough? How many searchlights would be optimal for surfing-lot purposes?
Thanks!

Taking up skating at 25yr plus is very difficult. Might be as hard as surfing at that age. Definitely more painful. Fuck I hurt too.
Carving is fun but getting a board similar to the shape when you actually skated is even better. Plus you dont have to lug something as long as you are into every shop, bar or buddy's home. I dont mean go out and buy a Hammerhead or ALVA although those still are availible and fun, but something that crusies but that you can still use if you were to go to some banks or a park. Older Powells and d-town shapes are also very good for avanue runs as long as you have some nice soft larger wheels like the ones suggested before. Tail gaurd helps too. Plenty of modern skate companies have "old school" "geezer shapes" which are rad. Mine is a 8.25 X32.5 AntiHERO. I really dont do the flipity to go any smaller. Cant go wrong with some Old big 169 indies and some wheels larger than 54mm.
Like in surfing longboarders suck!!! HAHA nah it's fun from time to time and with groups of buds.
I Need to work on my all my skilz badly!!!!

He got into surfing after getting his arm F'ed-up in a bicycling accident. He made his own foam blanks in the backyard. Dude was a brilliant engineer. After study navigation charts and ship's logs, he moved to the North Shore and was one of the first people to ride Sunset. He got around the islands on his bicycle. Crazy life that guy lead.
