fog eels unravel

Fog eels crept up and enveloped the coastline yesterday.
Underneath their downy blanket wavelets churned and peeled.
Smooth rivulets bucked and marched.
Rippers flew through the air, launching from crispy end-sections.
Little glassy somethings.
high wave-count possible.
Bay to Breakers bands thumping in the distance.
Carnal revelry parading through the park.
Significant, large-scale detritus scattered everywhere late last night. Huge beer-soaked floats wedged up against a tree.
A couch on the side of the road.
A drunken, passed-out dude with fake boobs and a huge blue wig.

Cool to meet obsurfer at that masterfully pimping Telegraph hill penthouse party. that place was ridiculous! Huge deck right next to Coit tower. Overlooking the entire city. Giant living room with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, gigantic fireplace, irie itale veggie brazilian food. schweeet.

Great to jam with the legendary Kdalle yesterday. Heard some cool stories about Terry(?) Sims (Sims snowboarding) taking Kdalle on late-night skateboarding missions with his prototype rubber skate-wheels and longskate fashioned from a reinforced waterski. Clocking over 60mph on the downhill. Also some gruesome tales of the infamous psychotic aggro local Goodlove, or Lovetree or i can't remember his name. gnarlz. Kdalle rips on the guitar!

Onshore with beauty weather this morning. Gave my back a break so no first-hand account. Anybody score?

Teahupoo is happening. Some classic matchups in round three today. Bruce Irons v. Chris Ward should be radical!

Glass Love

E- Your sunday sounds delightful. For some reason, I neglected all thought of surfing Sunday until it was too late. Looked nice on the way to the family dog walk.

It's always fun surfing when there is some significant other thing going on at the beach. Doof tells me of a great session he had back in the 80s when there was a Rave going on at the beach. I guess your Bay to Breakers might be similar to a rave. I guess more like a love parade.

Anyhoo, fun to have waves in May.

Steve-O: Give more details of your acquisition process on the Campbell Brothers Bonzer. I have been thinking of getting one, and Doof had a long process getting his. How did yours go?

Right on! I may be the first post! Hey, great
to meet you and Bagel at the party the other
night. Wanted to talk a bit with you about
Nicaragua, but was I so pickeled after two days of boozin' that the night came to an abrupt
halt! Only to get up and repeat for Bay to Breakers on Sunday! You care if I shoot you
some questions about your past trip to Nicaragua?

And Bagel, nice trick you've taught Chardonnay .... Keep that chicken coming!

Good to meet you guys!

ya man, 1 day of dog school and the shits allready paying off. good to meet you too, obsurfer, cool peoples. fun niceness party weekend..sweet neighborhood bbq last night, thanks robme for the use of the grill and the fire. also a fun sloppy afternoon session with tons of drunks on the beach on the way out. was funny and pretty disturbing to get out of the water to see 2 wasted marina type kids with beeds around thier necks drunkenly sucking eachother's faces off at waters edge, they were in desperate need of a room. the amount of trash everywhere yesterday was a bummer though, hopefully Gavin's out there cleaning up right now.

and since when did beads represent lets get f'd up drink alot of beer and see if any chicks dig us
anywhere other than at marti gras and in new orleans, it will loose its magic for all the OG's im thinking..

Has this Mavericks thing gone too far??

Hard Rock International and Mavericks Surf Ventures, LLC today announced the launch of the "2005 Mavericks Live Tour," a multi-city concert tour bringing the authentic experience of Mavericks - the "most dangerous wave on the planet" - to Hard Rock Cafe audiences in California and Nevada this month. The Mavericks Live Tour will feature live performances by the Mermen (the legendary Northern California band known for its high-powered surf anthems and psychedelic sounds) as well as World Champion surfer, model, and recording artist Daize Shayne. Memorabilia and video footage from The Mavericks Surf Contest™ will be on display, and some of the world's best big-wave surfers will be on hand to speak with fans. The nine-city concert tour - sponsored by Verizon Wireless and Surfer Magazine - will kick off on Thursday, May 19 at the Hard Rock Cafe San Francisco.

Hard Rock Cafe and Mavericks, huh????

Capitalising on mavericks is kind of a joke. The spot happens to be blessed with a good marketiable name. Other than that some of those other big wave spots are much more pleasing to watch on-screen.(anybody see that pebble beach shot in latest surfer-jeeezus) Kind of ironic too that all of those maverick's flicks are all the same (i've fallen asleep to two in the theater)my .02

I'm going in August and staying with Dale Dagger.
So psyched and I would be grateful for any advice or commentary on the surf and his package.
thanks!

Can't comment on the surf, but Dale's package is pretty average, don't let the porn star name fool you.

Posted by: Dale's ex-girlfriend at May 16, 2005 11:40 AM

i heard dale is an arsehole. I'd avoid. You can get to all the waves without Dale.

If you go to Nic, imho try not to use Dale or JJ. Travel by yourself or one friend. Explore independently of the surf tours, you don't need them and you're usually forced into bigger groups. Support the local crew. Some horror stories of drunken, mean-spirited Dale yelling at people and such.

I hate to talk about central america (other than Costa rica) on this blog. I'd be happy to email with anyone who's curious but i feel bad talking about it on the site.

I think we should be able to name any spots we want to on this blog...FUCK IT AND THE NAY SAYERS!!! Better niceness kooks go rather than most other Americans (especially slocal fucks)! At least niceness folks wont behave like the nicas are second class citizens and that they own the place....just cause you buy land doesnt make you a nica, tico, or mexicano...your a friggin visitor

I actually met Dale and he seemed like a good guy and knows the area well...he also employs a lot of Nicas, but I have heard that at times he does act like he runs the place....my exp was very positive...guy seemd real cool to me and other travelers despite not using his services...fun guy too...maybe its cause Im a booze hound too?????

The kids out of Pappoyos and San Jaun del Sur run surf trips but I dont know if they have a boat...they would be the way to go if they have a boat..Pappoyos rocks!!!!! In any event they will take you to plety of spots for a couple of bucks....they also do good ding repair and are just rad kids...very helpful friendly...forgot the great kid I gave a couple of bucks to do some sanding for me...damn good people...

I heard there is an awesome camp run by an Aussie. Personal guides, boats, fishing, great bungaloo et al supposed to be rad......He also donates time and money to poor kids...Christian based I guess but from word of mouth a great buisiness to support...do it yourself sure but going to this guys camp I heard is the way to go!!!

Close your mouth as you croos the river and cover your cuts....

Took a drive south of slide on Sat. First stop was actually crowded at 7:30am. Never saw a crowd there before. Passed and drove to stop #2. No crowds at all. It was a bit crumbly but what the heck. Suited up and went out for a few almost-sorta-kinda fun waves. The water is clear but definitely chillier than OB.

Sunday at OB was fun. Foggy but glassy. Met a few of the peeps from my hood in the water. Nice crew overall. Got a dozen or so waves and headed in. Probably would have been better with a longboard cuz the faces were soft but the shortboard was an ok call for the day.

Drove by the North end after the mayhem. man, the trash containers were filed with all kinds of debris. Dumpster diver heaven. Home made wagons and stuff I didn't know what the heck it was...

Let's raise the kook quotient a bit in here: yesterday morning was AWESOME!! Oodles of shoulder-high rights with pockets and lips and rumpled walls that sometimes went forever. Most of the morning there was no way to tell where you'd drifted to; though I think it turned out I was almost exactly in the same spot for three hours, luking a ways behind a steep sandbar that would give new life to fading waves. Dolphins, seals, pelicans, and good vibes.

Mexi - I've noticed recently that a lot of sand has been moving around. The concrete drainpipe at Vicente is completely out of the sand and a huge bar has built up just to the south of it. There are very deep pockets and very shallow spots all along the beach. Moderation is not part of the scape right now. I haven't bothered with the north end lately but it looks to be kinda wierd too.

tombstoning at hermosa that looked like
a shot from mavericks. on par with a large
hungry OB. got the front end and am waiting
for the closeouts to stop while eyeing escondido.

the water is dirty. boca barranca looks like
a field of baby ruth's and all manners of detritus, plastic, oil...blecch. part of a
natural cycle added to a bit too much in that
spot...

CR is warm and fun. slow and real.
the sounds i heard walking jaco today
were like a symphony. two stroke motor,
dog barking, man braking concrete by hand,
alien horn sounds from alien vehicles of strange
shape, chickens and rain falling. simultaneous
and unknowing.

i miss my lady, and home a bit
but not my wetsuit.

cheers.

curtis- bring the bigger board.

On selling out....I am wearing a LOST SHIRT that just out right claims that they sold out....Bob Hurley and Tony Hawk maybe sell outs..nah check that Tony is no sell out but Jeff Clark and Stacy Peralta..you gotta be kidding me...these dudes are pioneers...sure early on Stacy exploited some youthful skaters THE BONES BRIGADE..paying $$$$ to the likes of Lance Mounatin, Tony Hawk, Mike Mcgill, Steve Caballerro, Tommy G...guy is responsible for the birth of modern skateboarding..he's an employer of legends and has earned every dollar he gets..even if it was off the backs of others..hoiw different is he than your boss? Well he fuckin skated, made videos and supported kids who skate..Stacy should be respected..he's given opportunities to other skater/surfers turned camera heads..led the way to the like of Taylor Steele..would Alva,Mark Gonzales, Ed Templeton or any skater turned entripenuer have a start if Stacy did not lead the way...sure Steve Rocco was a sell-out but Stacy Peralta comon.he created Powell and Peralta for Christ's sake.....your just stupid..I WORK IN THE INDUSTRY AND WOULD GLADLY SHINE THE ASS OF STACY AS OPPOSSED TO THE KOOK SUIT FUCKS WHO ARE RUNNNING THINGSIN MOST EVERY COMPANY EXPLOITING TODAYS YOUTH...AT LEAST STACY WAS ONE OF US....LONG BOARD LOVIN FAGS!!!!!!

As far as Jeff Clark goes...learn the details..he doesnt even get the $$$ you think he does...he's a pioneer and surf adventurer who deserves any penny he can get from Mavericks...he's not..Ive heard he's not even a part of Mavericks LLC and only gets some scrapping from this whole Mavereicks thing..some suits stole all the right to it from under his nose.....In any case the man is part of the foundation of NORCAL surfing and desereves some $$$. I surfed with the guy and unlike his counterparts he's a friendly guy despite snaking me one day...but I didnt trip it was in his home and he deserved every wave he wanted...we laughed about it when I called him out...wasnt a smart ass about it...THE GUY LOVE MAVERICKS AND THATS JUST NUTS!!!!

Would we be upset if Fred Van Dyke got rich off of a movie?????...which is a good idea...fuck the dogtown story how bout the story of NORCAL surfing and the likes of Fred getting paid...

I harp on wise for example but I respect BOB WISE and Dave...they made a biz and it's working for them.....you dont have to support them but dont hate on em!!!!! Are they really that different from Alex, Devin or John Shultz? Is Jack Johnson different from Dick Dale?

SELLOUTS ARE PEOPLE WITH NO SACK WHO HIDE BEHIND THIER COMPUTERS DISSIN PEOPLE THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT!!! SELLOUTS ARE PEOPLE THAT DISS PIONEERS ONLY TO HAVE 10 BOARD QUIVERS,FANCY HOMES NEAR THE BEACH, QUICKSILVER THIS....VOLCOM THAT...DONT BE HYPOCRYTES!!!!!

SELLOUTS ARE THE FUCKS WHO CURRENTLY RUN EVERY COMAPNY IN THE INDUSTRY WISHING THE HAD THE SOUL AND TALENT OF STACY PERALTA OR JEFF CLARK!!!!!

Sure I talk a hell of a lot of shit...but at least I have enough sense to respect people who have put blood, sweat and tears into surfing and skating!!!!! I could care less if they are rich as long as they do it cause the love to!!!! guess Im bored and upset cause I cant get a job in this industry beacuse THE SELLOUTS ARE IN CONTROL!!!!!

Nah, really, I agree with the Jeff Clark take that Pez has. The issue with Clark is that he is by no means a business man. Show me a surfer who is? Maybe Kelly Slater merely because he has strong people behind him. If there is a dollar to be man, someone will find an opportunity to make it. We should all just hope that the ones doing it show respect to the subject matter.

Jeff Clark has a nut sack. Too bad he doesn't have the bag of cash he deserves.

Posted by: Dennis at May 16, 2005 03:21 PM

First off, I'm looking for a grandma style cart to cart my kite surf gear around in, and possibly make a trailer for my bicycle. I'm asking the niceness heads, as you all frequent the beach, and I hear there is an overabundance of carts there. If someone picks me one up, e-mail me at andrewon44th at excite and there might be a sixer in it for you.

Second off, I was talking to a sediment type engineer the other day, and he was saying the dredge materials from the channel are being deposited on the south end of the beach offshore, the southern swells create a longshore drift that move it up north, meeting the tidal current from the bay slows the flow and the sediment drops. However, growing sandbars is not the overall trend. I think Blakestah mentioned the detailed bathymetry being done. That report is part of trying to figure out why the beach is shrinking...I'm in the school of thought that all the levees in the Sacramento River stifle the natural sediment transport. Hell, back in the day, San Francisco was sand dunes from Twin Peaks to the ocean...they used to film desert movies in the Outter Sunset. Now we've paved it over...sand bars really aint what they used to be.

Joining late... Mexi, thanks for the tip on the surfrider eco-thang. I'll contact Sean and maybe bring my 6 year old with me to help out.

Friend #1, I first contacted Duncan to see if there was any place on Oahu that I could buy a Bonzer, since I was going to be vacationing there for a week in Feb. He said no, but invited me to come to the cafe and say hello.

Later, I saw on Craig's list that Palm Street Surf Shop in SC was selling a couple of new Campbell Bonzers, so I contacted Barry Green, the manager. I was finally able to make it down and placed an order in person. I gave Barry my stats and told him that this was to be a head-high OB board. He started asking me about dimensions, which I would have thought Malcolm would figure out, but I threw out some numbers anyway. When I got home, I thought better of it and sent Malcom an email asking him to watch out for my board and feel free to discard every dimension on the order except for the length. He asked for my phone number and said he would call me if he had any questions. Almost two months go by without hearing from Malcolm, so I call Barry at the shop and ask for status. He says he hasn't heard from Malcolm either, but that's par for the course since Malcolm is shaping these in his spare time (his full-time job is shaping for Merrick). I go to the fish fry in SD a week later and the guy who runs Moonlight Glassing tells me that Malcolm has been out of the country for a month shaping in England. That explains the lack of communication. He also tells me that Moonlight will be picking up the business operations piece of Campbell Bros. boards so that Malcolm can stay in the shaping room, which is his natural habitat (paraphrased). Finally, a week after the fish fry, I get an email from Malcolm saying that my board is at the glasser and should be done soon. Two days later I get an email from Barry saying the board will be done soon and apologizing to another guy for having to wait since October for his board. So, if I only had to wait three months, I think I made out. Manny and Pavel have 5+ month waiting lists. Oh yeah, I really have no idea what this board will look like, but I hope Malcolm used his best judgement and ignored my feeble attempts at spec'ing a board for myself.

If you need contact info for Barry let me know.

But you got to admit, that "Lords of Dogtown" thing looks like shit! And look whos claiming it? Stacy Peralta. You think he didnt have to bow down to hollywood at least once? from the look of the trailer i'd say way more than once. If he would have stoped at the documentary I would not call him a sell out. Jeff Clark I dont know much about and if he didnt have anything to do with the hard rock thing than ill my sell out statement back.

dave from wise is not a pioneer. He was like 10 years old when Bob opened the shop in 68. He's just a big ole blowhard - biggest bag of wind in the city. Whooooooshh.

Bob shaped, then Domond Lee and PeeWee with Orbelian working there too. Dave came later. After Wise stopped selling their own boards.

Pez, you're acting like a kook.

Don't act like you surf with Clark and you are bro's. I've seen you surf, you're no Clark and you hardly should be claiming anything. The reason you can't get a job in the industry is cause you can't get your shit together, it's not brain surgery and you can't blame anyone else for your situation. It's all about your skillz and your connections. Sorry if you lack either. So don't get so fired up bro.
