nice spring morning

No wind
Plenty o' peaks.
A bit dumpy
Two guys on green fishes snagging long ones
Relatively glassy
Smallish
Inner-bar hollowness.
Some quick, squirty rides.
Very very nice for late April.
But not immaculate celestial nirvana.
Thanks to the guy on the HIC board (?) for giving me a wave.
Good vibes in the water, though about 30 folk congregated on the same peak.
It was fun to watch the show as surfers jockeyed and took-off on top of each other.
30 yards north or south empty peaks.

Weekend in Jersey/Philly
Beluga whale swam up the Deleware river.
Sis opening a restaurant/bakery in Millford NJ. (The Lovin' Oven)
Scrabble.
Soccer with the groms.
Wedding dancing with the oldies.
Hearing about people stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Travels in Qatar and the U.A.E.
CJ charming everybody, including me!
Family dog getting old.

Ben Bourgoise interview

Posted by: at April 26, 2005 11:30 AM

notes from the DL...

being hurt sucks. especially when the wind
is not howling. so bored and going stir crazy...
went down and scoped out south of the showers
this a.m. and almost hurled. so glassy.
friends greeting me with goofy looking,
"i am so happy." grins....good on them...

if you can get out there, do and savor it.

spectating is torture.

question for the mass out there...anyone pulled or
torn an abdominal muscle? if so how long did you stay
out? i am telling myself and everyone else the 15 day
DL but think that i will go insane in 10. advice for a quick
re-hab? on the legal side of steroids unless you have greg anderson's number. i am doing arnica, glycosamine/ chrondrotin, ibuprofren by the handful and nothing strenuous.

cheers.

Posted by: korewin at April 26, 2005 12:00 PM

Korwin - unfortunately, the best thing you can do is not use that muscle until the pain goes away. Then you really need to be patient while doing 'very' mild stretching (pain = no gain)for a couple weeks prolly. Once you can stretch without feeling pain, start rebuilding the muscle. I'm not sure about the benefits of glycosamine/chrondrotin for a torn muscle. They are mainly used to assist with the hydration of tendons and ligaments. I take them for tendonitis in my shoulder. You may want to look into deep tissue massage therapy for the affected area. It could speed up the healing process. It works on torn hamstrings. Not sure about torn abdominals. Other than that, I would suggest doing the google and you can always ask Beth. Injuries suck but re-injury really sucks for a much longer time. I wouldn't recommend getting back into the water until at least mid-May.

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor but I saw an actor play one on tv once.

Sucks, korewin. Mid-morning was alright: inner-inner bar stuff, with longboarders catching a few in the middle. Glassy, but not a huge number of good waves where I was, and those divided among the largish crowd. More close-outs and sections you can't get arouud than anything. Funny, I saw some guy on a green-railed fish get a good one too. It was good for working on quick take-offs and pig-dogging. I blatantly dropped in on someone, and felt bad about it until he did the same to me (inadvertently, not as revenge), blocking probably my best wave. Welcome back, E!

This is pretty lame of me.. but..

I'm selling my truck to pay for my trip. Figured I'd give it a shot here. Anyway, It's going for $19,500 obo. Great condition nothing wrong. A few scrapes on the front bottom bumper, and a crack in the windshield the size of ones pinky nail. Here's a pic, except my truck is silver.

for info on the truck, go to http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/2001/ford/lightning/first_drive.html
Anyone interested email me.. aloha2ian@yahoo.com

Sorry for the ad.. Won't happen again. I'm just getting desperate.

Posted by: Ian at April 26, 2005 12:38 PM

e - WELCOME HOME!
korewin - Yes, being injured truly SUCKS! I just got back in the water the other day after a month in dry-dock myself. Yesterday I over did it a bit - too much too soon. I stayed out there too long and I'm paying for it today. I've never torn my abs, but as a beat up old man, my advise is to allow yourself a longer, rather than shorter, recovery period. Otherwise you risk further injury and an even LONGER recovery. Glucosamine/chondroitin helps joint tissue repair and stay healthy - I'm not so sure it'll do much for your ab tear. Ibuprofen is great stuff, but it is VERY hard on your stomach. After LIVING on the stuff during several years of back pain I ended up with esophageal erosions and acid reflux disease. Don't take too much and try to switch to extra-stregnth Tylenol as soon as you can.

Posted by: Jimmie at April 26, 2005 12:45 PM

thanks for the tips folks...i know that the glyco
may not be of help literally but it makes my mind
think it is getting better. yeah the recovery time at
34 is heaps longer than at even 30 (read that KAISER!)

i intend to stay out for the 15 days and then see.
i hope to not lose too much as i have a plane ticket
to CR the 12th of may. so that is keeping me honest.

and with respect to tylenol vs. ibuprofren jimmie...
tylenol = no beer and if i cannot surf then damnit
i am gonna drink.

welcome back e.

cheers for kakalaka ice cream headaches!

I would suggest you smoke a little instead.

Welcome Back E!!!!

It got a little heated while you were away, but a consensus was reached and that is that....WISE SUCKS.

Please, enough already with the wise comments. It was old two days ago.

Posted by: Dennis at April 26, 2005 01:57 PM

CORRECTION:

The consensus reached is that some anonymous troll thinks that wise Sucks.

Reading the rationale of said troll, I find his thesis invalid.

I've surfed SF for 20 years, and I have never, ever had a problem with Wise.

E - why don't you post the id of the wise hater so we can get an idea of his motivation?

Posted by: friend #1 at April 26, 2005 01:59 PM

welcome back e!

ripoff update: haven't heard anything about any of my stuff, but i mentioned my plight this weekend when buying some used gear (7'0" goin round pin & a fcs double-board bag) and both sellers had read my report and offered sympathy discounts. bruce also GAVE me his car safe! i REALLY appreciate the generosity and thought that others might like to hear about the friendlier side of our local surf community.

Posted by: loon at April 26, 2005 02:02 PM

and dennis, i am very sorry to hear about your brother. the advice about watching the tylenol-booze combo is legit. my dad got a liver transplant at age 52 and while he did have a drinking problem i have always suspected that his regular use of tylenol was a significant covariable. when drinking i only use traumeel, which is mostly arnica, or aspirin if i'm really hurting.

Posted by: loon at April 26, 2005 02:03 PM

dennis...

you are the sort of doctor that i have been
looking for my whole life. ay ay capt!

Alkeyhol is tough stuff. I don't do anything harder than acid these days;) Which reminds me, did anyone see that big whale off the beach this am. It was just rolling around nice and slow at the south end.

Posted by: Dennis at April 26, 2005 02:17 PM

korewin, arnica is awesome stuff, are you doing the internal and external approach? if not, i reccomend it.

i'd suggest getting a massage and acupuncture as well to promote whole body wellness. the mental anquish of being injured is counter productive. the titus k, feature in the new tsj has a really powerful story of the power of the mind to heal.

cabo trip was a success. last 4 days delivered good surf, little vibes, a few urchin spines, and plenty of stoke. hmmm, time to put the wettie on i think.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at April 26, 2005 02:41 PM

Injuries suck. No bueno but we all get them.

As for the WISE Guy, ain't no bother to me. You are entitled to your opinion (even if you share it 600 times).

Surf has been good the last few days. SE winds tomorrow. Boo Hoo on you if you missed some glass the last few. Lerm, funny how much different the crowd scene was from Monday to Tuesday. Same place, same bar, 20 more people versus the 4 of us yesterday. Anyhoo, still fun.

I love April! I call it the "No Stress Zone". This occurs when I get up in the morning around 6:00 and check the bouys. Get to the beach and have no stress until Fall when the bouys start reading 10+ @ 15 secs. Until then, enter the "Stress Free Zone".

Anybody get a board bag off those local guys that advertise on Surfpulse, Airwave?

Posted by: Andrew on 57th at April 26, 2005 02:57 PM

Sorry to hear that Korewin...boy, can I relate to spectating torture. What helped me was trying not to look at the surf when the weather was good, and when I got better enough and had the time, walked around/got exercise outside. Preferably in the hills, out of sight from the ocean!

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at April 26, 2005 03:13 PM

Surfermag's wavewatch launched today with an interactive cam feature that can zoom / pan.

Posted by: Walker at April 26, 2005 03:14 PM

Can any of you techies tell me what I need to do to my computer so I can watch the surfpulse cam and the new wavewatch cam? I have the appropriate software so I think its a matter of turning something on (or off) on the internet options....

I need another distraction at work!!

Posted by: traut at April 26, 2005 03:29 PM

That is cool .

Posted by: joe O at April 26, 2005 03:34 PM

Joe O - stop fighting with me for the cam control!!!

The new Surfermag cams can zoom in enough to ID someone surfing, and can pan from Noriega to Lawton. I think there'll be another OB cam coming, too.

If I were surfline I might be a little worried. Just a little.

You need JAVA to use them.

Posted by: blakestah at April 26, 2005 03:38 PM

i bought a second hand airwave bag and recommend them- it is well built and makes a good day bag. I would look at their heaviest padding for air travel. this looks like it could do it, but I am more comfortable with a heavily padded coffin for the plane monkeys.

Posted by: at April 26, 2005 03:41 PM

yes please

Posted by: e at April 26, 2005 03:54 PM

E ,

wellcome back! It was interesting to see the board get a bit unruly in your abscence , like siblings fighting when the parents go away for the evening! Had some fun ones this morning buts its amazing how you can get stuck in a rip anf feel that helpless feeling of loosing the battle even on a tiny day! Did get some fun ones though before wind and tide conspired. As for the Wise comments , I must say in a perverse way I find it quite funny. I can remember how they made me feel like the biggest kook in the world when I was a fledgling and they had their shop on Vincente. Funny, when I became a "professional" with a deeper wallet they suddenly had time to talk to me. Still though you get the feeling that they both benefitfrom and resent the onslought of surfers in SF and thats why they can be so full of attitude at times..You can't have it both ways. I've bought boards there and now I'll start looking at the other shops in town. Pluse their board selection sucks, no fishes!

Thanks

Posted by: curious at April 26, 2005 04:01 PM

surprised they identify the cam location, good thing BVB is in Hawaii or that sponsor might get vandalized.

arvo question: logs/fish only or is it shortboardable?

Posted by: wavewatch is cool at April 26, 2005 04:11 PM

F150? The crappiest MPG of anything. Everyone's got a big ass fat-boy overeater truck. GWB cowboy nation mobiles.

Posted by: at April 26, 2005 04:12 PM

Wavewatch, I drove it at 1:15 and it was shortboard-able but a fish was preforable. Given the conditions last night, I would take a flatter board out there. Sunset wasn't very good last night but still better then work.

BVB is all hat and no cattle.

SF Surfshop is 5 months plus. Of course, you haven't been able to get a board shaped at WISE since the 70s.

Your best bet is elias. He doesn't suck.

I can tell when we're entering the small surf season. The posts get really weird. Maybe you guys can help me find a new muffler for my lawn mower? I'm also having problems with the weeds taking over my back yard. Any suggestions?

And Home Depot sucks! Also Best Buy.

And nice Big G, thought i heard that name before. Nice!

And no surf shop sucks unless they rip you off.

Got a new gig on a cool movie working 12+ hour days, ugh, but at least i can dp it still until 9am.

Iriie.

Posted by: Hb at April 26, 2005 08:25 PM

I hate to use chemicals on the lawn, because of the effects on pets, but prolly the best thing might be a jug of Roundup sprayed liberally about. It will kill the grass, too, but you can reseed. If your neighbor's yard is the source of the weeds, you could use the leftover weedkiller on his yard.

Posted by: steve-o at April 26, 2005 08:26 PM

What SF only makes kook boards.
Why don't he have a pro riding this f...ng boards.
We need a real shaper that know what people wants.
I wounldn't by a high performance board from someone who can't even ride them.
What a joke.

I have a small issue with the choice of nail polish color. But that is like complaining about the glove compartment in a Ferrari. I can also tell by the way she is looking at me that she digs me. She cannot help it. They all do.

The weeds just take time and effort to get rid of, and healthy non-weed plants help a lot too. What we really need is someone to come in and get the gophers...

When I was living on 44th, my landlord came down and was like, "Andrew, thanks for filling in that hole next to fence." "Nah, man, wasn't me" Next week, "Andrew, why'd you put big piles of sand all over the backyard?" "Nah man, wasn't me" We had like 2 sqare feet of lawn left by the time we realized we lived on top of a gopher breeding ground. We had a problems with the weed too...all kept getting smoked. Maybe that's why we didn't notice the gophers.
