Top of the week to ya.

Some semi-attractive, uncrowded conditions on offer this morning. Chest-high, inner-bar opportunities. Nobody out at 7am. Small and dumpy for the most-part but a few peeling niceties kept things humming. Slight offshore wind. Crisp, cool coastal temps. Some inside racetracks and ramps. Monday morning lack of crowds. Get on it if you’re deliberating.

Yesterday afternoon witnessed some low-tide thumpies out the back. Lerm and I sloshed through the poo-water and found glimpses of the promised land as the sun waned toward Hawaii. Shifty, peaky, A-framed suckouts munched and marched up and down the beach. I got slammed by one wave and tweaked my back pretty good.. might be out of commission for a day or two. But.. a few fast, pump-laden, high-line speed-explosions will keep my daydreams fueled these next few days. Surf. Also some moments of “why the hell do I continue to do this activity!?” as lip upon heaving freezing lip crunched on my head and injected silty salt-water storm runoff up my nostrils and into my brain! The ocean is fucking relentless!!! Fuck!

Reading an awesome book right now.. “Collapsed” by Jared Diamond. He wrote “Guns Germs and Steel.” The chapter I just finished was all about Easter Island. Diamond reconstructs the history of how the Polynesian settlers churned through the fragile ecosystem of the island, felling trees for canoes, houses and tools for their huge monument projects. Environmental destruction led to warfare, cannibalism, starvation and depopulation. Fucking gnarly story. Now the book is talking about the Pitcairn islands. If you’re interested in the history of the south pacific, or about environmentalism and sustainability, check this book out. Diamond is also speaking at the Herbst theatre on January 26th. I’m super psyched!

yesterday, while hiking in redwood park, i witnessed an activity that rivals surfing in its difficulty: a couple of guys thought it would be fun to go mountain biking in the muddy, rocky, steep single track...on unicycles. holy shite! impressive! luckily for them, i think their sport doesn't have quite the aesthetic appeal and allure of surfing, so the trails probably won't be overrun with single wheeled freaks falling all over themselves any time soon.

Just dropping a note that E's might be up and down a little over the next couple of days. We're finally moving it to a legit hosting facility (as opposed to the ancient desktop computer covered in spider webs and dust sitting in my basement connected to my DSL line that's it's been running on for the past couple years) and at the same time upgrading the software that the site runs on. It doesn't really mean anything for the site except that it should be faster and more stable.

Water advisories at OB have been lifted, although the signs are still up.

Beach wasn't quite empty this morning at 7 AM :)

damn bagel i thought you only painted cool little tomato head dudes... that shit's porntacious, i dig it.

friday i left early and got a certain spot pretty much to myself with some heavies coming through. saturday i got a first wave nug at a spot resembling disneyland but was snaked repeatedly by my best friend Mr. Clean.

can somebody post a BVB pic again i wanna see if i recognize him?

Posted by: bbr at January 10, 2005 10:36 AM

thanks mwsf! hopefully we can get some niceness donations to help pay for the hosting.

e, that sux u tweeked your back. that session was fun yesterday afternoon! and how 'bout that snow in the mountains? i'm starting to feel a little sick. cough cough.

Posted by: lerm at January 10, 2005 10:36 AM

oh yeah. bagel, dope art man.

Posted by: lerm at January 10, 2005 10:37 AM

Bagel, nice work. Here is your reward. Enjoy it....

I got out myself yesterday afternoon with CK and co. at the beach. As bad as it looked from the beach, we hit it anyway. I had a pretty fun time out in the slop. Kinda like spring skiing over slush and rocks but still fun to be out. Got a nice "fall-like" sunset last night as well.

Hoping for some decent winds this week to get my motor running again. Swell down but at least the winds could be good. The swell will return, it always does......

Surfed da Mar nearly by myself this am. At least my end of the cove.

Early on there was one other guy out that couldn't catch a bus on Market Street. Then later one guy that knows how to surf paddled out on a shortboard and we talked a bit. Toward the end of the session the tide got way high and we morphed into the old guys sitting way too far outside having a conversation.

Fun to get the Longboard out after a couple months off. Left after left after left. Last one took too long in coming. When it finally did came, I rode it a bit too long, that last section sucked up and hey isn't that sand? Bounced both board and me off it, but no damage to either.

Posted by: friend #1 at January 10, 2005 11:15 AM

Worked all weekend. No wetness and no photos except for a few mini-thumpers at SmokeJay. But the tourist shots driving the coast can be fun.

Posted by: Bruce at January 10, 2005 11:21 AM

GET UP TO THE MOUNTAINS! I trudged my way up there Sat. morning, got denied up the 50, and decided to turn around and go North Lake because the 80 was open. The drive was brutal! But Sun. was incredible! First chair, untouch freshies, in 3 feet of fresh powder! Like floating on a cloud. This had to be the best day I've ever boarded. If you have the time, go up to Tahoe as soon as possible. Get a cup of joe, and get on the first chair to the top. Still feeling the turns in my head. Just amazing!

Posted by: obsurfer at January 10, 2005 11:28 AM

any of you kooks come up to Tahoe, we're gonna trash your boards/skis/saucers. stay at the beach and leave your oversized SUVs and chained tires where they belong so we can actually get to the snow and buy groceries and live a life free of city stress.

The beach had some nice though empty waves all day yesterday until a couple peeps hit it late in the day. I guess that was you Kaiser.

It's funny how nobody went into the water until someone else did. Shortly after two folks went in, about a half dozen took the plunge. I guess they others were waiting to see if the first surfers would be eaten by bacteria like a bunch of hungry piranah. Ten minutes out and there still alive... Must be safe now. Hope nobody gets sick.

Yesterday's water tested clean. There's a time lag - the testing results come in a day after sampling. Updated results were posted at 10:15 this morning, and signs will come down whenever they get around to it.

Posted by: blakestah at January 10, 2005 12:35 PM

remember who you are and where you come from. Your life is not a practice run, a warm-up for the real thing. This is it. Do not let life get away from you by default. Remember that all the years will go by anyway, and only by making good choices, can you truly say you have lived those years. Let your spirit soar.

apologies to all, literally the second I put my neoprened foot on the sand the onshores whipped up. How does the wind know? Oh well I had to get in the water, even only to pop up a few times, to prove to myself that I will not get stuck in farky rips EVERY time I go out. My head was starting to trip illogical....fortunately today broke the curse. All is not lost.

Unicycle?!

Posted by: s.s.sharkbait at January 10, 2005 01:48 PM

Decided to wash off in front of my house for lunch and the winds switched from sideoff to side on in the time it took me to get into my stuff.

Went out anyhow and caught two quick rides before it totally went to crap.

Whitecapped when I looked back on the walk home.

Waitaminnut...Friend #1, was that you I talked to on the beach? You were heading in, I was going out.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at January 10, 2005 02:22 PM

wanted to hit it at a certain spot yesterday and watched it for a while, but it just wasn't working. bumped into Kaiser and, as he said, we decided to hit the beach. had fun even though it was sorta like being in some giant's bath tub...sloshing everywhere! it was great to get back in the drink...between travels and illness it had been far too long.

Tom...good meetin' ya briefly yesterday. always good to put a face to a name. hope you found some nugs.

Posted by: ck at January 10, 2005 02:30 PM

Dang it, shouldda gone out in the morning. Midbeach 12:30-2---sharkbait and friend #1 tell the tale. Hard to tell the swell from the chop by the time I left. Four or five folks out when I got there but I was the last survivor, charging the unchargeables.

Posted by: kloo at January 10, 2005 02:31 PM

thanks everyone for helping reunite the lost longboard w/it's rightful owner. corbin at sf was the one who put the pieces all together. geoff the owner was incredibly stoked and appreciative.

a couple nice peaks very crowded at linda mar 11-1. the wind was coming up.

SS- I think you were talking to Gary. Was he holding a yellow board?

He drives an original mini and deals real estate.

Posted by: friend #1 at January 10, 2005 02:49 PM

3to5setsof7... Mr. Hunter is an artist of metal fabrication and represents down here in the 831 (the former southwest 408). His cyclocross bikes rip.

Bruce your shot kind of speaks to how awesome the sky and lighting has been over the past week or so -- in between the downpours that is. I took a couple of quick tourist shots myself the other day that I think I'm gonna blow up.

A photo north of Cruz (if the link works).

Posted by: caught_on_the_inside at January 10, 2005 03:14 PM

Friend #1, what are you doing, pretending to be Gary? ;)

Kloo, I knew you were out there, wanted to locate, but experience has proven that trying to find one particular neoprened dude among other neoprened dudes is damned impossible! Combined with my hearing I'm the farking Helen Keller of surfing. Hrm that might explain some other techinical issues too.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at January 10, 2005 03:29 PM

Bstah-I guess it's better late than never. I watched the signs go up on Sunday morning. Figured it was justified with all the rain on Sat. I'm gonna get a bacteria kit from Scientists'R'US this weekend and start running my own tests before sticking my nose into it.

Posted by: Dennis at January 10, 2005 03:34 PM

dano,
i know rick well and have one of his hardtails, bike #81. like a custom surfboard custom bikes rule. currently i'm having a lustful affair with a steelman crossbike i bartered for. all this bad weather, i've been getting some on that bike. 14 out of the last 17 days. no poo disease water. just rain and mud, high on endorphins sloshing about the coast range....

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at January 10, 2005 03:48 PM

What time is first light? I need my DP back!

Posted by: Kaiser at January 10, 2005 04:04 PM

thanks dudes..i need to update my thing..

work was going off this weekend!

heard there were waves only at sloat today but i was asleep. ready to surf though, just in time it looks like.

Posted by: bagel at January 10, 2005 04:08 PM

Bagel... nice work as usual. You gotta website? Kaiser, 7:00 is plenty light me thinks. Perhaps even earlier? 3to5setsof7, I've got a Hunter cross. Looks a lot like this one from his site, but a bit bigger and with no barcons (just trashed, that is crashed-on, DuraAce 8-speed brake shifters).

Posted by: dano at January 10, 2005 04:26 PM

bagel - your work is tight..like it mucho..

La Concita, near Rin*** had a couple huge mudslides today. Couple people died. Sad. I just drove along there yesterday looking at muddy brown Rin*** and deciding it was not worth it. Scary to think it could have happened at anytime.

Be thankful for your healthy life and surfing stoke especially when you see others suffering.

Help out when you can.

Mr. Rain, enough!

Posted by: Hb at January 10, 2005 04:37 PM

maybe if i just close my eyes all these rains will go away!!!

Posted by: j at January 10, 2005 04:41 PM

Hb... I used to live in SB and work a little south of it. Had to drive by La Conchita every day. I remember a nasty train wreck that closed the Highway for a few days which turned out to be a "get out of work free" card. It was the first time the peeps in La Concita could hear the surf. La Conchita is the home of a banana plantation (they have a very mild micro climate) and a pirate radio station (at least back a few years ago). Oh, I guess mudslides have happened there in the past. Here's a shot of a previous one.

Seth... some nice shots, and better weather is on the way. Of course, after it RAINS some more.

Posted by: dano at January 10, 2005 05:08 PM

Nature is dishing some harsh situations right now. Who broke their board at Sloatation Device this morning? What happened? It was fun glassy nugs then the blink of an eye, slop wind chop. Bagel, awesome work! Seth, very nice shots.

Posted by: Ian at January 10, 2005 06:42 PM

dano,
sorry to hear about the crash of your hunter. cyclocross rules. do ya race?

do you ride anything else BUT your crossbike anymore? i don't.
if you get screwed and end up having to upgrade. i'd reccomend bar end shifters. i've got them and had no problems. ergonomically it's like driving a tractor or old car. except your descending into madness.........

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at January 10, 2005 07:18 PM

I puked at the finish of my first cyclocross race. I was racing for something like 32nd place, but this dude was chargin' up behind me and I couldn't let him pass me. Way fun.
