good times. small and fun

Got up. No wind. Lerm calls. Says it’s small. How small? Real small. Grab Brett’s 9’ log. Jog down. Say hi to friendly dog. Meet Lerm. Over highway. Down to beach. Bigger than expected. It’d be nice to have the shortboard. Oh well. See a super-mush outer-bar wave. Paddle way out to it. Turbo-speed booster paddle. Angle take-offs into outer-bar mushers. Shuffle to a cheater-five. Sort-of. Catch three rides then paddle in and trade boards with Lerm. Lerm searches for longboard-land. Some nuggies on the inside on Lerm’s fish. Catch a few. Christian paddles out. Electrified morning. Storm brewing on outer waters. Glassy glistening glassiness. Funky waves barreling then backing off then farting out. Christian gets some long ones and a nice narrel. Christian forgets he has no leash and I almost get speared. No worries. Lerm paddles in from the outside on the pier. He takes off on an inside left. Pretty fun and getting better. Christian more good rides. I kookily cruise along a few peelers. Lerm and I trade boards again. Lerm scores a nice multi-turner on his GRAS. I take off on a few semi-steepies on the tanker. I’m getting better at the longboard/single-fin thing. Angled take-offs and not much turning. Novel to whip through the fat sections. Absolutely impossibly to duckdive. Didn’t try to turtle roll.. Just bailed it. 8:10 rolls around. We come in. Bunch of dead seagulls on the beach. We contemplate lunch. Christian’s yoga teacher wants to enable him to pleasure himself. Lerm’s girl leaving for Taiwan. Hope it’s not flat this weekend for central coast surf trip. Here comes Brett walking Zeus the crazy cool ol’ dog. Give his board back. Run home. Shower shave N-judah book jamba juice bagel ola como estas to Alfredo surf-report present moment.

Thanks for sharing those maps elias. The cartogram representations are sweet as they look like a chinese fighting fish, which is a good analogy of the current position this country seems to be in (i.e. Repubs and Demos stuck in a bowl continually taking jabs at one another while the fish that are tired of the struggle try to jump out of the bowl).

Posted by: traut at November 9, 2004 10:50 AM

yeah, cool maps elias. made me feel slightly less overwhelmed. the distorted ones reminded me of in-process tie-dye t-shirts - oops, used a little too much red this time... also like your analogy traut.

skipped the dp, wife needed the car, sounds like fun out there. db's report doesn't leave much hope but i'm still aiming to get out tomorrow morning.

Have some bad dings on my rails and am prepping for a trip to Baja over Thanksgiving. Any reccomendations out there for a nice ding repair guy that can work with epoxy finishes?

By the way, snurfed Sonoma County Sunday and it was fun but chunky and inconsistent. Sort of satisying to know that OB was better than my old school spots, I guess.

Need to put a meter up at work, with a dial from 25-100%. The caption would read, "Today's Chance of Throwing It All Away and Moving to Central America".

Today would be a mere 40.

Posted by: Nate at November 9, 2004 11:25 AM

nate, i like how even on a low day there's still a 25% chance of throwing it away.

welcome to the club.

Posted by: j at November 9, 2004 11:27 AM

those maps are really great dr. crouch....
i feel better, i think....

last weekend i was in south carolina visiting
family and i have been processing and REALLY
thinking about what i saw and heard. as people
typed furiously about california divorcing the rest
of the u.s. i chuckled and thought it a bit over the top.

think again. our little world (sf/ ca.) is NOTHING like the
rest of this country. there ARE some scary scary
things afoot. i spent 3 days in the low country of
south carolina and saw NO KERRY ANYTHING. W's
everywhere and lots of talk about the mandate to
change the u.s. as W/ cheney see fit. the atlanta
journal constitution had a section last saturday called
"faith and values" right after the sports section in the
paper. is there any way to stem this mad rush to the
right? and i am sure that those who love W will type
their responses...but if you surf HOW CAN YOU FAVOR
those creeps? there was talk of oil exploration off the
east coast by a few columnists in the papers. ANWAR
being a done deal...oh and the other thing i learned....
i counted on an hour drive...about 60% of the vehicles
on the road (64 out of 105) were either a full size SUV (tahoe, suburban, excursion, expedition) or a full size pick up truck.

Posted by: bagel at November 9, 2004 11:41 AM

Korewin, thanks for the update. I guess I won't be visiting anytime soon. My favorite bumperstickers from last summer's trip to Charleston: "Save the Males" (ie, don't let girls go to the Shitadel), "We don't care how you do it up north", and of course "No More Bagels"

Alas, this world could use a few more Bagels.

IAn - just did a somewhat similar trip to the south pacific. Couple pieces of advice. If you haven't been to NZ, you need to go there- the surf is real good and the scenery is amazing. Also, seems like you are doing a lot of island hopping. While it is great to try and see everything i have found that 3 days is not enough to get a true feel for the culture, let alone score it. Give me your email and i'll send you some of the spots i found around the South Pacific. God i wish i could do it again.

sponger - I think Bob Marley's "Get Up/Stand Up" should be the Demos or liberals theme song for 2008. Im not giving up my spot in SF to some repub, but doubt the homophob would take it anyway (however I do welcome my upcomming year in Europe as of Oct 2005). Feel sorry for the non republican midwesterners (like my parents) who have been getting harrassed by the "dark side". Just heard from my old minister that W is not affiliated with any church. verrryyy interesting.... must just be a desciple of the Church of Karl Rove.

btw, while I was in Centro a few months back I heard some very sad Patriot Act stories about longtime US quasi-citizens or actual citizens who got deported due to lack of residency papers. Imagine living in the US all your life and then for some reason or another (i.e. x-wife won't give you your birth certificate or ss card) you are forced to leave your lifestyle, friends, job etc to go live in the country where your parents originated and to make it by, you are forced to get a job as a parking attendant etc that only pays 2$ an hour. Where is the media on these stories????

From Robert Nesta Marley:

Get Up, Stand Up, stand up for your right (3 times)
Get Up, Stand Up, don't give up the fight

Preacher man don't tell me heaven is under the earth
I know you don't know what life is really worth
Is not all that glitters in gold and
Half the story has never been told
So now you see the light, aay
Stand up for your right. Come on

Get Up, Stand Up, stand up for your right
Get Up, Stand Up, don't give up the fight
(Repeat)

Most people think great God will come from the sky
Take away ev'rything, and make ev'rybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You would look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
You stand up for your right, yeah!

Get Up, Stand Up, stand up for your right
Get Up, Stand Up, don't give up the fight
Get Up, Stand Up. Life is your right
So we can't give up the fight
Stand up for your right, Lord, Lord
Get Up, Stand Up. Keep on struggling on
Don't give up the fight

We're sick and tired of your ism and skism game
Die and go to heaven in Jesus' name, Lord
We know when we understand
Almighty God is a living man
You can fool some people sometimes
But you can't fool all the people all the time
So now we see the light
We gonna stand up for our right

So you'd better get up, stand up, stand up for your right
Get Up, Stand Up, don't give up the fight
Get Up, Stand Up, stand up for your right
Get Up, Stand Up, don't give up the fight.

Hey,
Anyone here know of any good board history sites or maybe even a blog?

A friend just picked up a board that's been "in the shed for about 4 years...", and I thought I'd try to find any info I can about it. It's a 9' board that has a hand drawn logo of the Hawaii State flag with text, "Hawiian Made" below it. Also, along with the board dimensions on the stringer, (9'-0", 17" - 22" - 2 3/4) the shaper wrote, "pure fun". I would guess it's an early 90's edition; glassed in side fins, center fin box, leash plug, triple stringer...

Any help would be appreciated...

Almighty God is a living man
You can fool some people sometimes
But you can't fool all the people all the time
So now we see the light
We gonna stand up for our right

Surfed the Lunch Shift. Glassy at 11:45, winds switch right as I cross the sand. Still managed to slank into several nice pockets. But, by 1:00 when I rode my last wave in, it looked like nothing was left. The tide and the winds combining to just about squash it.

"Babylon Makes the Rules" David Hinds/SteelPulse

(2) A weh dem a go do when the time comes around
A weh dent a go sek

Cos

My people are in a mess
But nobody wants to know
Cos when you're down and out and oppressed
You've got to fight your battles from the
Lowest of the low
So keep your distance and take your stance,
Cos this could be your utmost chance.

You've had all night and day to
Consider and pray
You've brought fire on my head and
Now you must pay.

CHORUS

Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
where my people suffer...

Take Rastaman culture for instance,
Dem think is political joke,
But we people know better then that,
Cos what keeps us together is
Jah Herb that we smoke

I and I know the truth of it all,
Cos we have smashed our heads
'gainst that wall,
And now I seh we must create a scene,
We must recapture our culture
by any means.

CHORUS
Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
Babylon makes the rules
where my people suffer ...

Count the times we've been let down,
And left us in despair,
And woe betide that evil man,
Who giveth not a care.
You've gotta check yourself just
One more time,
Reassure your mind -
Cos those who are chosen
by the father's hand
Must not get left behind.

Rasta seh - guidance
(4) But Backrah seh different still

Babylon makes the rules but
Jah love will carry I home.

Dear niceness friends,

I know we should be sticking to stories of how epic Thur-Sun were, but this announcement from our fearless leader in the wake of last Tuesday's "mandate" is an ominous sign of things to come...

President Bush has announced his intention to appoint Dr. W. David Hager to head up the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. This committee has not met for more than two years, during which time its charter lapsed. As a result, the Bush Administration is tasked with filling all eleven positions with new members. This position does not require Congressional approval. The FDA's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee makes crucial decisions on matters relating to drugs used in the practice of obstetrics, gynecology and related specialties, including hormone therapy, contraception, treatment for infertility, and medical alternatives to surgical procedures for sterilization and pregnancy termination. Dr. Hager is the author of "As Jesus Cared for
Women: Restoring Women Then and Now." The book blends biblical accounts of Christ healing women with case studies from Hager's practice. His views of health care are far outside the mainstream for reproductive technology and modern gynecological practice. Dr. Hager is a practicing OB/GYN who describes himself as "pro-life" and refuses to prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women. In the book Dr. Hager wrote with his wife, entitled "Stress and the Woman's Body," he suggests that women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome should seek help from reading the Bible and praying. As an editor and contributing author of "The Reproduction Revolution: A Christian Appraisal of Sexuality Reproductive Technologies and the Family," Dr. Hager appears to have endorsed the medically inaccurate assertion that the common birth control pill is an abortifacient (causes abortion). We are concerned that Dr. Hager's strong religious beliefs may color his assessment of technologies that are necessary to protect women's lives or to preserve and pro mote women's health. Dr. Hager's track record of using religious beliefs to guide his medical decision-making makes him a dangerous and inappropriate candidate to serve as chair of this committee. Critical drug public policy and research must not be held hostage by anti-abortion politics. Members of this important panel should be appointed on the basis of science and medicine, rather than politics and religion. American women deserve no less. There is something you can do. Below is a letter to be sent to the White House, opposing the placement of Hager. Please copy all the text of this message and paste it into a fresh email; then sign your name below and SEND THIS TO EVERY PERSON YOU KNOW WHO IS CONCERNED ABOUT WOMEN'S0 RIGHTS. Every 100th person, please forward e-mail to

        president@whitehouse.gov

I oppose the appointment of Dr. W. David Hager to the FDA Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee.

Mixing religion and medicine is unacceptable in a policy-making position. Using the FDA to promote a political agenda is inappropriate and seriously threatens women's health. Members of this important panel should be appointed on the basis of science and medicine, rather than politics and religion. American women deserve no less.

I did noon to 2 or so. Small, breaking really far inside, but breaking pretty clean and pretty steeply, with some fun walls to be had; definitely shortboardable. Having spent a number of sessions botching take-offs on bigger waves, it was nice to get back to my roots and botch take-offs on 3-footers. Small group out on the glassy bumps. Maybe I saw you, Friend #1? I was right at the shower.

Stopped by Aqua on the way back and drooled over Retro Eggs. $700?!

i've got a couple of coffey retro inspired eggy things. they have a bit more contempory foil to them then the Hobies, and are a thruster configruation as oppossed to the 2+1 set-up. email me at three2fivesetsof7@yahoo.com and I can give you some details if you wish.

bagel, did you get my follow-up email?

kaiser, about your retro egg....i've been looking for something in that vein but haven't yet decided on a shape. is yours what Coffey calls a mini-nose rider? how big is yours and what are your thoughts on length?
i've been riding a friend's 8'2 and find i can actually sit deeper than longboarders and then race through the sections. so much fun!!

I am leaving my post as Attorney General so that I can concentrate on busting Communist, dope smoking, reef butt loving surfers in the Bay Area. (and so I can dedicate more time trying to get into Janet Reno's pants)

classic post from surfermag forum---

subject: I need some advice on what could be a life changing decision.

I've suspected for some time now that my wife has been having an affair. The usual signs. Phone rings, I answer, someone hangs up. She started going out 'with the girls' a lot recently, although when I ask which girls, it is always "Just some friends from work, you don't know them". Lately, I have come to suspect that when I go surfing, things are happening at the house while I am gone. I return home from a good session and the bitch that is my wife is now in a good mood. There is the scent of candles in the air and the bed looks rumpled. She also seems far more eager for me to go surfing then she ever was in the past, almost forcing me out of the house with my board when it’s blown out and flat.

Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn't want to know the truth, but yesterday I decided I had to know. I pretended to go surfing and loaded up my car and left. I drove 2 blocks over and parked the car and ran back to the house, jumped over the fence and went into my attached garage through a side door that I had conveniently left open. Once inside the garage I hid over in the board racks, under a pile of old board bags, and settled in to wait. (No one uses the front door at my house, everyone comes and goes through the attached garage) As I crouched there with my heart in my throat, I suddenly noticed something. There is a big delam on the deck of one of my Bonzers.

Should I send it off to be professionally repaired or just go buy the materials and do it myself?

cool john, there are some farmers up in humboldt who can't wait to meet you!

retro egg from merrick

materials is about $100

shaping fee $80

glassing fee $150, plus another $150 for the lam tint pinlining and gloss

Thats about $480

the rest is markup

clear and sanded from Schultze or Coffey would be close to $400

lam tint from either would be $550-600.

Rule#1. Curren is God(his brother, father and immediate family are royalty)

#2 NorCal surfers do have a kinship with santa barbara because the locals down there DISCOURAGED sponsorship and encouraged soul surfing dispite the crowds.

Thanks Blakestah for the price breakdown, and just for some more clarification can you even order/buy a board shaped by Al Merrick?
The guy is a friggen legend but even retail has a limit. You'd think he would cut Frisco surfers a price break just for being hardcore purists. Its not like we are complete sellouts like certain individuals inhabiting counties south of ours.

Support local craftsmen yes but it should be brought to the attention of Big Al that he is getting a bit out of touch with his roots.

OB Rat, my email is iane at sfsu dot edu. And I agree about the South Pacific island hopping. Please email, because I would probably rather stay at one or two places instead of jumping around.
Nate, thank you very much for that link, that is a great site!
Anonymous, I'm floating the bill and am working very hard for it. May even take out a small loan. Everyone says do it while you can, before you have any serious obligation, and I'd like to take that advice.

The eggs are selling for that much because people are WILLING to spend that. I dout they'll stay at that price for more than 2 years, as they won't be "cool" anymore.

gvibe, that post was classic!

Ian, That trip sounds crazy, way too much flying though, jeeez. Remember that you want to be in those places at the right time too, it's hard to jump around to different hemispheres and catch swell, think about doing one hemispher at a time. but, shit at the same time, go for it... And if you really want to explore the South Pacific you need to take it slow, it's not easy. 3 days in Morocco and 10 in ZA, why bother?? Take it slow. slooooow down bra....

New page up, working on a new Ibook, colors are funky.

I like this definition:

"God, to me, it seems, is a verb not a noun, proper or improper; is the articulation not the art, objective or subjective; is loving, not the abstraction 'love' commanded or entreated; is knowledge dynamic, not legislative code, not proclamation law; not academic dogma, not ecclesiastic canon. Yes, God is a verb, the most active, connoting the vast harmonic reordering of the universe from unleashed chaos of energy."
