sloppy and uninspired at the Beach

Again a repeat of the same ol' stuff. A few stout lads were having a go of it down near Lincoln. They looked to be having a good time. I saw one of them almost catch a little waist-high dribbler. It's blowing onshore purdy hard at the beach. Blakestah mentions that a 2ft 14sec south is producing waves.. soo.. maybe get up to Bobo or down to the greater Santa Crustaceous area for some groundswell action. The 'Stah also reports activity up in the Gulf of Alaska... so we might start seeing some olas grande this weekend.. hmmm...

In Right coast news, the east is feelin' the pulses from Hurricane (tropical storm?) Alex. Here are a couple reports from joemac.com (new jersey surf site)

Double overhead big long lines but big long lulls. Get on it get out there as fast as you can. LBI is the place to be all day I bet. I wonder if anybody down there will submit a report?

Some really fun waves coming through around chest to head high with the occassional bigger set-it has gotten bigger since this morning so get on it and have a blast-shold be fun all day!

Update-Waves have built to head high+ perfection- time to bring out the Duke K. board!

soo.. Kus, Drdy, J.O.C., Hennessey and all you east coast grovelers! Enjoy that shit!! let us wave-starved Californians know what's happening. This is what east coast surfers live for! The Hurricanes are here. East Coast represent!

umm.. yeah..

Anybody have any old distortion pedals they're not using and wouldn't mind selling? preferably Blues Driver or Tube Screamer but i'd try anything..

thanks..

If you liked Kem Nunn's books, "Dogs of Winter" and "Tapping the Source," he just came out with his newest work, "Tijuana Straits."

a letter from sierra club lawyer and coastal activist Mark Massara

Dear Coastal Activist,

The Hearst Corporation must be really happy these days. Why? Because the
state of California is in the final stages of approving a deal for the
Corporation to get $95 million of taxpayer’s money and likely be allowed
to substantially develop their land. And what will the people of
California receive in return for this princely sum? …ownership of only
1,100 acres of the 82,000 acre central California Hearst Ranch and a
conservation easement over the rest with holes a truck can drive through!

This deal, as it stands today, would allow Hearst to retain ownership of
over 98% of the property, reduce public access, and allow the construction
of a 100-room resort and 27 mansions scattered across the ranch.

AND THIS DEAL WILL SET A NEW LOW STANDARD FOR CORNSERVATION DEALS FROM
EUREKA TO SAN DIEGO demonstrating to every single land owner in California
that they too can get public dollars, while retaining ownership of their
land and excluding the public from accessing the places their money has
been used to “protect.” The price to purchase and protect open space in
your community will go through the roof.

The Sierra Club, Audubon Society, NRDC, California Native Plant Society,
Defenders of Wildlife, Coastwalk and other environmental protection groups
believe that THIS DEAL MUST NOT BE APPROVED UNTIL IT IS IMPROVED - not
just for the residents of San Luis Obispo County but for all of us who are
working hard to protect our local coastal areas.

o Why is the public being asked to pay so much money long before the
release of specific details of how the Corporation intends to protect this
land? Why should the public support a “conservation” deal that has no
guarantee of environmental protection?

o Why should California’s taxpayers fund a deal that would decrease
the public access they have historically enjoyed? Some dramatic and
unique coastal spots, currently accessible to all Californians, will be
closed off or visitation will be severely limited!

o Why should the Hearst Corporation be permitted to build and sell
27 mansions scattered throughout this open space after we give them $95
million of scarce conservation dollars?

o Why would the public pay $95 million dollars for a deal that puts
90% of this open space off limits to hiking, camping and bird-watching?
With California growing more crowded we need open space deals that offer
more public access and camping opportunities, not less.

Developers and landowners throughout California are surely watching this
process and we can expect more bad deals like this which will drive up the
cost of protecting open space in the future. The Mateo Coast, wetlands in
Marin County, fragile coastal cliffs of San Diego, and the rugged coastal
open spaces of Mendocino County are just a few examples of important
coastal open space that environmentalists are working to protect. Think
about how much more difficult it will be to protect California’s great
coastal places if we must ante up the kind of money Hearst is asking for
(and apparently getting) from the State of California without any
guarantee of resource protection.

Help protect the future of land conservation in California. Please write
to Governor Schwarzenegger (or just copy and paste the letter below adding
in your name and address) and send it back to me at
savethecoast@sierraclub.org. We will print out your letter and present
it to the governor and the other decision makers in Sacramento on
Wednesday, August 11th.

Thank You

Mark
-----
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:

As one of Sierra Club’s 5,000 Great Coastal Places Campaign members, I
urge you to insist that the people of California be provided with the
information they need to truly evaluate the Hearst Ranch conservation
deal.

Protection of central California’s Hearst Ranch is a local, statewide and
national priority for the Sierra Club and other conservation and community
groups. Major decisions are set to be made this month and yet the people
of California still do not have the information they need to assess and
comment on the deal on the table.

The Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) is set to make a decision on a large
part of this deal on August 12th and yet the Hearst Corporation isn’t even
planning on telling Californians exactly how they intend to protect Hearst
Ranch for another year. How can the state consider a conservation deal,
if the state is not free to consider the conservation aspects of a deal?

Please do not allow the Wildlife Conservation Board to act before the much
needed details have been released. Because this deal needs approval from
both the WCB and the State Coastal Conservancy, please ensure a joint
hearing so that all parts of this deal may be evaluated and commented on
at one time.

You have time and again spoken out in favor of protecting Californians
from undue pressure from special interests. This is your opportunity to
create a genuine public process that will benefit all of our state for
generations to come.

Thank you for your attention

I have some respect for Mark and his historiy, but he's barking up the wrong tree here, and the Sierra Club is basically trying to block the best chance the state of california -- and its people -- have of securing a perpetual deal that protects 88,000 (or more? not sure on this figure) acres of property.

I was at the public hearing in Cayucos, along with Mark M and a lot (400+) of other people. I know and know of several people involved in this deal who both support and oppose it, and aspects of it.

What the Sierra Club is doing is deceptive and misleading as far as I can tell, and it doesn't even have the support of the LOCAL Sierra Club board -- the chair of which the Sierra Club basically threatened to kick out if he didn't shut up and stop speaking against the SC national position, and this all needs to be pointed out.

As I understand it they're unhappy because the deal doesn't provide for public access to what are currently private lands. I'm really kind of stunned that an advocacy group like SC is essentially endorsing the equivalent of eminent domain in reverse.

I listened to a lot of ranchers who have worked the land in that area for over 100 years -- and this includes the Hearsts by the way who have been there for 115 years+ -- talk about what they know happens to ranch (not coastal) land when the public is granted access to it. They have a lot of very, VERY valid concerns over how hikers impact the land, and they've got the historical knowledge to know what they're talking about.

Point being, public access is not always a good thing.

Right now surf spots like San Carpoforo are accessed via trespassing on private property. For decades, the Hearsts have looked the other way and allowed people to go there and camp without ever hassling them or kicking them out. Part of this deal essentially codifies that into a formal arrangement. I fail to see how this is in any way bad.

Based on the maps and charts and plans I saw at the meeting, the deal also opens up over thirteen new beaches on the west side of HWY 1, which are currently inaccessible to the public.

There are definitely two sides to this, and I would caution against signing that petition without digging into it...

No surf again. One session thus far this month and it sucked. Compared to 21 for July and most of the those sucked, outlook is not good.

As I mentioned to B-Stah, when the first offshore winds blow, I will be performing sand-angel creations from Second Lot Sloat to Kelly's. Look for the guy with holes burned through the back of the wetsuit.

Fuck. Will it ever get better? Hold on.....Just a little more......You can do it......

Posted by: Kaiser at August 4, 2004 11:03 AM

Name this author:

In regards to today, my buddy and I paddled out down at Sloat this a.m. right after dawn. As I got in and started to paddle, my buddy ran back up the hill to grab something out of his car. Meanwhile, I paddle. Still paddling. Still paddling, going nowhere. He gets back in the water and paddles out to my right. I am about 50 yards offshore after 10 minutes of paddling. He gets sucked out 200 yards past me in no time so I immediately get over to where he was. Next thing I know he has drifted to my spot, I have made it to where he was. He gets sucked to the shore, I get lucky and get spit out to sea after paddling for like 20-25 minutes. Paddled my ass off and I was still nowhere near outside. Easily 300 yards away from the lineup.

After another 10 minutes ducking overhead walls of whitewater, I finally got out. BOMBS out there!

e - ah, one or three or five...would have been more but my limbs were sludge today! A couple guys out now getting some cute little longboard runs.

oh, TIP FOR LUKE and you other guys. Forgot to say earlier. WHEN YOU WANT TO GET YOUR GIRL INTO SURFING, cheapo as-long-as-it-floats board is fine. What is NOT fine is a bad wetsuit. Women tend to get much colder much faster than men. Find the best fitting, warmest wetsuit . If it turns out to be the cheapest one, fantastic. If not, bite the bullet and shell out for the suit that fits best. Painful, yes, but this will work in your favor. If your girl is freezing she won't be too happy with your 2 hour sessions. If she's warm and comfortable, then she can surf and splash around with or without you to her heart's content. If she's warm enough and still doesn't like the water...well...sorry you're SOL! At this point you sign up for my harem. Kidding.

End of blog hogging. Just had to pass on this oh-so-important info. Warm wetsuit. Seriously.

One significant day in my life
By David Lynch

Jane - May, 2004
A significant event occurred in my life the day I learned that our human physiology, our body, is made of consciousness.

Consciousness???

"What???" I asked out loud in wonder.

I learned that our human physiology is so magnificent and complex, and so exquisite in its design and makeup, as to be wondrous beyond imagination. We are spun out of unbounded, infinite, eternal consciousness.

I learned that underlying all matter is a vast, unbounded, infinite and eternal field of consciousness called the Unified Field. I found out that modern science started taking this field seriously about 25 years ago and that all matter is unified at this level in a state of perfect symmetry, or balance. The entire universe emerges from this field in a process called "spontaneous sequential symmetry breaking."

Are you still with me?

I also learned that there is another science called Vedic Science. This Vedic Science is ancient, and it has always talked of the Unified Field.

Interesting!

Veda, I learned, means "total knowledge." The home of total knowledge is the Unified Field. It is also the home of all the laws of nature. The branches of Veda, 40 in total, make up the language of the Unified Field, the impulses of this eternal field.

I realized this Unified Field is quite an interesting place. It is not manifest and is full, meaning it is no thing, yet all things in potential. It manifests and permeates all things: the whole universe, everything, while still remaining full and not manifest.

Amazing!

Is this mind-boggling or what?

Now comes the hippest part. I have learned that any human being can "experience" the Unified Field.

Really?

Or: So what?

Why in the world would we care to experience the Unified Field?

First, another question.

Have you ever heard that most of us human beings use only 5 percent of our brain, our mind? Have you ever wondered what in the heck the other 95 percent is all about?

This is the beautiful part coming up.

The "experience" of the Unified Field actually unfolds "enlightenment"-higher states of consciousness culminating in Unity Consciousness, the highest state of consciousness. These higher states use that 95 percent of the brain. That is what the 95 percent is there for-to give us permanent, all-time enlightenment.

Now, what is enlightenment? If you were a lightbulb, let's say, your "glow" might light up your whole house and surrounding yard. In enlightenment, your "glow" would be unbounded, infinite and eternal. That would be some glow!

Enlightenment is fulfillment. Supreme fulfillment. Unbounded, infinite, eternal bliss, consciousness, intelligence, creativity, harmony, dynamic peace.

Enlightenment, I have learned, is our "full potential." It is the birthright of every human being to enjoy enlightenment.

Is this good news? I think it is such good news.

In Vedic Science, the Unified Field is called "Atma." Translated, that is "Self"-the Self of us all.

The Unified Field is not something foreign, or even something far away. It is right within each of us at the base of our mind, the source of thought. A great sage from the Himalayas, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, brought a beautiful gift to our world in the form of Transcendental Meditation. Transcendental Meditation is an easy and effortless, yet supremely profound, technique that allows any human to dive within and experience that unbounded ocean of pure bliss, pure consciousness. the Unified Field, our Self.

It may be interesting for you to know that millions of people are practicing Transcendental Meditation all around the world. People from all religions, and all walks of life. Over 600 studies have been done in universities and research institutes validating the profound benefits of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Program.

Having this kind of knowledge and technologies of consciousness available to us in this age is, in my mind, a significant event. Yet the "experience" of that Unified Field is the most significant event, because it unfolds what we truly are-totality.

Posted by: blakestah at August 4, 2004 01:15 PM

Posted by: cadaver at August 4, 2004 01:43 PM

I've been studying the physiological workings of the human brain for 15 years. Such statements are ambiguous and poorly qualified.

Define "physiological workings."

What is the 5% we know and the 95% we do not?

How can it even be quantified in a percentile?

How are such statements not insulting to people who actually study the physiology of the brain...what exactly do I spend 20+odd hours dedicated to neurophysiology lecturing on...

Eric Kandel's Neuroscience textbook has hundreds of pages on neurophysiology - no where in it will you see any statements about the elusive missing 95%, or the 5% we know.

It is all a crock.

We need surf.

Posted by: tomstah at August 4, 2004 01:56 PM

PLUS it turns out that possession is nowhere near nine tenths of the law---in fact the true percentage is nearer 77.3%. ALSO, Edison was surely on shaky ground with his claim that genius is almost entirely an excretion of the sweat glands. AND I harbor very serious doubts as to whether Ivory Soap is 99.44% "pure". FINALLY, I'm deeply troubled by Yogi Berra's insistence that baseball is 90% mental, the other half being physical.

(The Eskimo don't have all that many words for snow either.)

Posted by: Klooless at August 4, 2004 02:09 PM

I hear the 5-10% brain usage thing all the time and don't get it--I like bstah's insistence for reference. Maybe when people say that, they're talking about 5-10% at any particular moment. I use a very different part of my brain when I'm at work than I do when I'm in the water, and a very different part again when I'm consoling or encouraging my wife or babysitting my friends' kids...just a thought.

Surfed Monday night. Surf was mediocre (at best), but anyone else recognize the miracle of Monday night's weather? It was cloudy/foggy/blowy/wintery downtown at 5pm, but when I made it out to OB by 6pm it was sunny and clear with very little wind. I don't ever recall the weather disparity being that dramatically backwards before.

blakestah.. while it's true that many noble, likeminded neurobiologists such as yourself are rapidly mapping neural pathways, chisling away at the electro-chemical connections in the brain, breaking down behavior patterns etc, our collective human knowledge of the intricacies of what's happening in the human brain are tiny compared to an understanding of every aspect of the entire picture. We're just scratching the surface.

To think that in the 50 or so years that humans have been studying the microscopic "physiological workings" of the brain that we've come anywhere close to knowing 5% of all there is to know about the subject is ludicrous.

Kenneth Wesson: "As a possible spillover effect from the "Left-brained/Right-brained" craze, we often hear that human beings use only ten percent of our brains. The statement implies that we have already measured the brain’s maximum operational capabilities. There is not a single neuroscientist who has been able to quantify the brain’s full potential, which makes measuring ten per cent of an unknown quantity worthy of extreme suspicions." He goes on to say that the brain is high maintenance, and natural selection would not have allowed it to get this big without a purpose. Actually, I think some of this folklore may have come out of the early EEG brain mapping where scientists couldn't figure out what some parts of the brain were doing.

"In thematizing dependency, Latin American philosophy developed a liberation philosophy that focused on the social and personal imperative to overcome dependency as the path toward the fullness of one’s humanity, given the conditions of dependency."

Why "Indian Summer"? Answer: nobody knows. Some history on the term with a few theories.

For every door opened there are 100 more...

very true...

But each door opened is more than 100 times more important than the next 100 doors.

This is the solution to the conundum of madness in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." Each scientific finding raises more and more questions. Are we getting more answers, or just more questions...

The scientist has to guide his way by assigning importance - with respect to some framework of understanding - to each finding, and guide further experiments accordingly.

Like I said, if you figure out how to quantify what we need to know in a percentile basis, then we can begin to say how much we actually know.

But no one has done that, it's just a bunch of hooey trying to sound intelligent before making a completely unrelated point about meditation. Someone is selling snake oil as medicine.

I read thru the theories about "indian summer" posted on the randomhouse.com article - it was interesting to see the reference to "haze" or "smoky mist" during this kind of weather. This photo was actually taken March 8, 2004.

If you play guitar, you should be at this show:

Bill Frisell @ Yoshi's
Thursday, August 5 - Saturday, August 7

I'll be there for the 8pm Friday night show...

====

Guitarist Bill Frisell returns to Yoshi's with a power packed group featuring world-renowned Brazilian artists, singer/guitarist Vinicius Cantuária and percussionist Mauro Refrosco. This group explores the musical possibilities of Frisell's own multi-faceted compositions and time-honored jazz and folk songs in a Brazilian World Music context. The diverse backgrounds and talents of this group provide a wide-open climate where an integration of many musical directions becomes possible. Vinicius has had his music recorded by many of the top popular artists in Brazil, including Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa and many others. He has also worked with a wide variety of non-Brazilian artists including Angelique Kidjo, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, Laurie Anderson, Sean Lennon, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Joey Baron and Marc Ribot. Percussionist Refrosco has performed extensively with David Byrne and others.

Reading that stuff about the 'Unified Field' and other, similar descriptions of cosmic conciousness always reminds me of a place my head would go when I would take too much LSD as a teenager. Profound insight into the Ultimate, or merely drug induced psychosis? I'm still not quite sure - maybe a little of both. But I still get sucked into those kind of raps, saying "Yeah! Yeah!" until the hook comes in to it and they start talking about Yogi This, or Yogi That or some other Sri Probably Baloney deal they claim is the guaranteed road to permanent bliss. Phooey!
I don't know anything about neurology (I'm content to leave that debate up to folks like blakestah), but I know shuck 'n' jive when I hear it - all I want out of my meditation is to become a little more awake and lot more compassionate. I concur, we need SURF!

Open Letter to Wetsand Users
We are proud to announce the full launch of SwellWatch, our global surf forecasting system. Don't worry! All the things you love about WetSand are still the same. We're still free, accurate, and easy to use---the SwellWatch global forecasting system is free too! You can now track storms and swells anywhere on the planet, and get detailed, relevant information for every stretch of coast. In the coming months, you will be asked to register as a FREE member to use SwellWatch. This allows us to communicate new site features and products, and to personalize your own WetSand forecast. Our goal hasn't changed: we offer free, accurate forecasting, relevant content, and a surf shop with unique, hard-to-find equipment for people who love the ocean.

The changes we've made are pretty straightforward. Our short and long-range text report is in the same place as always---we just surrounded it with more comprehensive maps, charts and graphs. Play around! Surf your way across the planet. When in doubt, just keep clicking on the area of the map you'd like to know about until more detailed information appears (i.e. swell angle, period, height, wind speed/direction, buoy readings, tides, weather, etc.).

As we go forward, our goal is to keep providing the content we think is important to surfers; cultural, environmental, and design news, and product and travel information. New technology like SwellWatch is great and we're trying to use it responsibly. You won't find driving directions to local surf spots here. We're not going to call you on your cell phone and tell you what local spot to surf, where to park, what board to bring, or help you zip up your wetsuit. We have also removed our links to live surf cams. There are other sites to visit if you really want them, just not ours.

With a generation of surfers getting on in years, much has been said recently about "the old days," the golden years of exploration, when surfing was innocent and everything was better. The water was less crowded, cleaner, and you could still catch that lucky first day of an unexpected swell. Surf forecasting has changed some of that, but it doesn't have to. We're trying to make sure it stays possible to learn for ourselves, stay in touch with nature and our community, surf responsibly, and still enjoy a bit of adventure.

Please give us your feedback on the new system---let us know what you think is good or bad. And when you need something surf-related, think of us first! Visit the store, and tell a friend.

Thanks,
WetSand

I truely enjoy reading your report everyday. I have surfed 100+ days a year for 30 years...a bit obssesed. I use to suffer from intense debilitating back pain for 15 years then I discovered a book called "Healing Back Pain" by DR. John Sarno. After reading the book and seeing a DR. Sinel in LA, within a few weeks I was completely pain free and have been so for years. If it begins to spasm, I can make it go away. Other surgeons with MRI's in hand said I needed surgery...I realize what kooks they were when I reflect back. Get the book, get his other book "The Mind Body Perscription" (both best sellers) and you will be pain free within a month. If you have any questions you can call me at my office 661-367-2109.
