Small, onshore, rideable.

What’s up surf-heads. Yet another repeat of the seemingly endless string of small, onshore, disorganized, sloppy surf. However, It’s well within doable range and probably pretty fun out there. I’m giving my back as much time as I can but at this point if I see a glassy wave I’m out there. I feel really thankful that my injury has coincided with such legendarily shitstein waves. If I was forced to take a month off in November I’d be crying! Fingers crossed that I won’t!

Saturday looked grey, windy and disorganized at the beach. At around 5:30 I took a stroll, just to reintegrate my mind with the movement of the ocean. I watched a lonely surfer make his way out to the lineup and then catch squirty ride after blippy ride. Looked like good fun. He even found a lip or 7 to hit. Good on that guy! And then I stumbled into what seemed like a giant burning man party. These inebriated revelers constructed a huge wind barrier on the beach. They also set up a gigantic trampoline and had this huge sound system blasting dance music. The crowd was mostly dressed (cross-dressed) in colorful dresses and huge wigs and make-up and cave-man gear. The party was mostly guys with a few, fluorescent-fur-clad ladies in the mix. I wandered over to check it out and this 6’ 4” british guy with a pippy longstockings wig introduced himself to me and then kind-of hugged me to his bosom! He then pranced me around the party and introduced me to many of the partiers. He then asked me to pull his dress down! Umm.. yeah.. I respectfully refused and extricated myself from his grasp. I think most of the partiers were homosexual and they may have been either on E or trippin. It was 5:30 pm on a foggy, chilly Saturday afternoon and they were raging at OB.. good on em’!

Then Sunday Lerm and I checked it in the morning but decided to take a pass and go over to Secret Studios for a little jimmy-jam instead. It was even smaller yesterday than it was on saturday.. but.. still surfable! We rocked it Cranial Bulge styleeee and I got a chance to test out my new amp. After much wishy-washying I decided to go with the Fender Concert. It's a blackface reissue from '98. Thanks Dennis for letting me try out your Super 60 and thanks to the dude who let me try to Vibrolux Reverb and thanks to Pat for letting me try his Deluxe Reverb Reissue. I’m really happy with my amp purchase. The Concert is basically the same as the Twin Reverb ‘cept it has 60 watts instead of 85 and it only has one 12” speaker. But.. fuck.. the thing has loads of clean headroom and sounds all warm and comfy and rich and sparkling. I’m psyched. Hans Blix and Inspectors practice tonight so we’ll see how it sounds with a serious drummer mixing it up underneath.

Oh yeah.. then yesterday afternoon my friend rented this 43foot sailboat and we sailed all around the bay, for about 6 hours. I used to have romantic notions of buying a big sailboat and sailing out to the south pacific for a year of cruising around, surfing various mysto reef passes and anchoring in exotic, tropical island lagoons. However, yesterday’s tumultuous journey in the bay re-awakened my awareness that I’m a landlubber city-boy at heart and I’ll never be at home on the open sea.. or bay.. Hats off to all you sailer-folk that can deal with the constant rocking!! Fuck that! I was kissing the concrete when we landed in Alameda!!

also.. there are a bunch of people who emailed me about BASE-mag and other things and i've been a slacker about emailing back.. sorry..

e-can you compare the Fender Concert to the Super 60. I have a 60 that I used as a backup when my Music Man died. I never really liked it and now I'm debating the merits of repairing the Music Man which has way more power than I need vs. getting a new amp.

Regarding OB...sheesh! On the bright side, "summer" is almost gone.

Posted by: kdalle at August 2, 2004 10:25 AM

OB: still small but the foggy onshores have bumped it up. Impossible to tell how rideable it is so in the name of science I'm off to collect more data. Should really be continuing other backlogged work but am willing to make this sacrifice for the greater good ;)

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at August 2, 2004 10:27 AM

I hit it for awhile Friday after work (got out a bit early:) and again Sat am. Friday was kinda fun around 5pm then it got wierd and closed out. Sat was just to get a workout in Pollutica. Small waves really put the legs to work. I was in Alameda on Sunday too. Not sailing though, just helping a friend pickup some new furniture. What a huge tide swing.

surfed on saturday and had a blast even though it was blowing pretty hard at 7am. there were some nice, chunky peelers coming through with some punch.

e, i got my guitar back and man does it play soo much better. all you guitar players out there, i highly recommend dropping 50 bucks and having a pro set up your guitar.

Posted by: lerm at August 2, 2004 10:41 AM

kdalle - the super 60 is a half tube, half solid-state 60 watt amp made by fender in the mid 80s. I think they only made them for a few years. Even though it's rated at 60 watts you can't play very loud at all with the clean channel (definitely not over a loud drummer). I had the volume turned up to 10 in my little cottage and it wasn't that loud. The gain channel sounds ok, and you can crank up the volume a bit more, but.. saturated, distorted sounds aren't what fender amps are known for. The amp is psysically heavy too.

The Fender Concert that i bought is in the same line as the Twin and the Pro. It's all tube. Uses a Reverb tube too. The tubes are different than the Super 60 and so is the speaker. The sound is way more full and luxurious. I couldn't turn the volume on the clean channel past 3 in my cottage without shattering windows. The Super 60 sounds thin and one-dimensional compared to the thick, textured layers of the Concert. The Super 60 has a some darker, evil undertones (not necessarily in a good way, but not horrible) while the Concert has that chimy, classy Wes Montgomery Fender warmth.

Fender super 60 - good for quiet bedroom rocking. More of a beginners amp or first tube amp. Not much clean headroom. Middle-of-the-line fender model which was dicontinued and generally frowned upon by amp afficianodos (sp?).

Fender Concert - rich, complex, warm pallate of sound. Loud as fuck while retaining clean headroom. Good for gigging and playing in a band setting. Serious amp.

By my figgering, summer surf ends anytime it dern well pleases, ranging from mid August to mid October. At least the water is warmer, and there are lots of sharks to keep us company.

e-thanks for the commentary. The Concert sounds shweet.

lerm-who set up your guitar? Long time ago I used Gary Brawer at Real Guitars but I'm always interested in word-of-mouth. I suspect hat since my guitars haven't been played for over 10 years they are in need of the full makeover including harmonic adjustment, fret polishing, etc.

e-let me know if I'm over-posting on the music thing. Sez "surf Report" at the top but when the surf sux...

Posted by: kdalle at August 2, 2004 11:01 AM

guh?

Posted by: e at August 2, 2004 11:05 AM

kdalle - keep talkin' music! i've heard that the music man amps are great though I've never played through one.

If you like distortion look to Marshall and Mesa. If you like clean, look to Fender. There are also many many many boutique amps that have their own characterists and are totally worthy. Bogner amps are really well-regarded amongst metal-heads and such. If you have over $1500 to spend on an amp... play a bunch of the boutique amps and see what you like.

ALso keep in mind that any tube amp can be altered by re-tubing and/or changing the speaker(s). You can also have your amp "modded," which means that it's re-circuited and jiggered to produce specific sounds. Trey's Deluxe Reverb is heavily modded.

Saturday morning 8-10:30 at Ram Adnil was not bad: bumpy and windy and short-period and a little crowded, but some size and shape to work with. I tried to stay way north out of the crowds, but the wind messed it up too badly there, so I edged back to the crowd and found it very doable. Some folks were getting lots of decent rides; I got a few, including one really fun right that gave me a steep wall for a few turns. I think I may have seen our own Bruce sitting at the lot wall early on?

Just got out of a staff meeting. One of my coworkers is big into fishing. He was tuna fishing off santa cruz over the weekend and saw two great whites within 100 yards of the line up. No question- got a good look at the dorsal and the rest. Fark! We know they are out there, but sure seems like more sightings this year.

Posted by: Ian at August 2, 2004 12:24 PM

Hey, Lizard - fishing for tuna within 100 yards of one of the SC line ups? You may want to double check that source for accuracy. Albacore are out there right now, but more like 5 - 20 miles offshore.

Salmon would be a different story. Guys have actually been catching them off the Pacifica Pier and right outside the surfzone.

speaking of sharks...i surfed bobo a couple of times last week and was definitely feeling the spook factor. Waves were small and gutless for the most part and I got to wondering if the risk/reward ratio was swinging a little to far to the risk side. that shark repellent does look promising, no?

Posted by: jdz at August 2, 2004 12:51 PM

I saw 10 Great White Man Eating Sharks this Saturday at Ocean Beach. They swam around and swallowed those little fishing boats WHOLE! It's not safe out there, we're going to need a bigger boat!

On the more serious side, sharks are out there EVERY YEAR, this crap is nothing new, get over it. We live in waters that are "shark infested", and you still have a better chance of being run over walking across the Great Highway than you do of being attacked by a shark.

Until your number is up, live on. Anything you say or have done that makes you think you are safer in the water is bullshit! It's like trying to save yourself from lightning. Its highly unlikely to happen, but if it does the shark is in charge, and not you. I can't even handle a 40 lb seal attacking me in the surf zone, how is it possible to handle a 1000 pound shark!

Now, can we get back to talking about chord progressions?

I took my gal out to lindy sunday for her first ever surf. She was a champ- it was ugly and cold and the surf wasn't prime for learning, but when we got out all she wanted to know was when we were going next. Sweet!

Going back to a thread from last week, anyone ever pull off the "turn-girlfriend-into-surfer" technique for dealing with the ever-present surfing/relationship tension?

Posted by: luke at August 2, 2004 02:11 PM

Good thing I pissed after my session just south of Ano on Saturday! I love pulling the ole HEATER in the wettie and then wondering if mr. longtooth just caught a sniff and is doubling-back.

I am with Blakestah on the shark tip; it is what it is. If your number is called, well, good luck. Good thing the waves have been about 2 ft. so you can figure the water depth is no more then 4 ft. and I highly doubt a GW has any motivation to be lurking in 4 ft. of water about to eat any of our scrawny-asses. But, if you saw a GW @ Lindy, good for you. I don't really need to know about it!

Saturday, there was some south showing south of Ano. Got some waves w/ 3to5. Sunday, not as much going on. Weak dribblers in SMC proper, south of Devil's Slide.

I can attest that this summer has been one of the worst I have had at OB. Of the 15-20 sessions/month I usually get, very few of those have been at OB this summer. Let's hope late August/September begins to delivery.....

E, you must make the bowl-coffee combo a more central part of your daily existance. no more worrying about being "worthless come evening time."

I remember an old climbing partner (a fucking beast of a man) who once gave me the following recipe: "Line up 2 joints, 4 shots of jager, and 3 shots of espresso. Consume all in the space of 5 minutes. Following that, there will be a period of 23 & 1/2 minutes when you will be able to climb anything." I think it applies to most activities. Time frame may vary according to metabolic rate.

I loved riding home to our Haight apt. on the 21 Hayes, find the dude on a *&#*&* street, pay him a 50, still in my i-banker suit, run home, enjoy a fresh fatty bowl, throw on my flips then...run/walk/stroll/hop down to the ocean thru the Park...or sit on my roof with some buds and buds listenin' to Eek A Mouse...or play a game or 3 of hoops in the 'handle... or cruise Amoeba's vast Reggae section...or skate down some sketchy Cole Valley hill... or just get lost in the fog and walkman tunes in my head.

Not many places where you can buy a bag of kind in a suit on a street and be stoked.

Ahhhh, i miss SF.
