White-caps at OB

I didn’t make the drive south this morning. But.. OB looked relatively hurly-burly. A diminutive windswell is doing all it can to provide us with fun, quirky surf but the demon-spawn onshore winds are wreaking havoc as usual. Grrr.. onshore winds you suck!! Same ol’ story. Yesterday after work I thought for an instant that maybe I’d catch a surf at the local. I skated down the street for a check but almost got blown back to Great Highway as I attempted to crest the dunes. The wind was howling and there were a few kiteboarders giving it a go. As I stood atop the dunes, squinting at the surf through the afternoon sunlight, the wind was fucking ripping through my ears.. I thought I heard a faint, mysterious, high-pitched voice within the sound of the wind. It was saying something like, “Weeee wiillll neverrrr agaiinnnn leeetttt youuu suurrrrffff OoooBBbb wiiitthhhouuuuttt loootttsss offff oonnnnshooorrreee wiiinnddd!! Haaa haaaa haaa weeee laauughh at youurrr feeeble attemmptsss to stooppp usss!!!! You meeasslly humans!!”

Grrr! Onshores go home!!! This little windswell could be soooo fun if the local winds chilled out, even just for a few hours for the dawn-patrol. But, as myriad farmers, sailors, picnic-ers, and gardeners have known for eons, you can’t control the weather. It’s bigger than us. It pays no attention to our subjective whims. It automatically rages onward through the millennia to the design of physical laws and natural forces. But.. I guess we could maybe all meet at the beach this evening and drink copious amounts of tequila and get a huge bonfire going and dance around the fire in our long-underwear and scream bacchanal chants in tongues at the top of our voices to these very demon-spawn onshore wind gods and make extravagant promises to the creator suggesting that we’ll forgo the pleasures of the body for multiple lifetimes if only the oppressive, redundant never-ending onshore winds just chill out for a little while.. maybe for a few mornings… please..

Bagel's cool-ass art

Barrelled.. and psyched about it!

Crrraazzzy Broccoli guy

arrr, skunked again. low tide + small swell + onshore tempest = wasted time & gas and no surf for me. arrrrh.

i wonder how far north/south the 'wind zone' is for these onshores? anybody??

bagel's art kicks ass.

Posted by: j at June 24, 2004 10:23 AM

e....i'm up for the long-underwear, chanting, bonfire ritual if it will help! well...'cept maybe the "forgo the pleasures of the body for multiple lifetimes" part. that seems a bit drastic...even in June. ; )

bagel...sic art, indeed!! when's your next show?

Posted by: ck at June 24, 2004 10:27 AM

While dancing around the fire in our long underwear, wasted off of cheap tequila, I suggest we sacrifice something.

How about Gumby (No offense Gumby but Im just bummed that you and not I seem to be catching all the waves). Any other suggestions??

Posted by: traut at June 24, 2004 10:28 AM

OB sounds like a mess, so I guess I picked a good week to be away, but I actually miss not only the frequency and availability of those steely waves, but also the workout. Here at a popular place a ways south, I was happy to discover that dp = diminished popularity. Only one surfer in sight, preceding me down the bluff by a few seconds. We had all the peeling waist-to-chest rights we wanted for half an hour (not as zippy as yesterday, but still fun) until a gaggle of interlopers arrived and simultaneously the waves lost size and consistency. Then it became what I guess is a needed lesson in jockeying for position and staying out of folks' way. But it's very difficult to get any kind of workout surfing here: the paddles out are trivial, and even if you crank on them you're waiting at least five minutes for another crack at a wave. I will return to OB soft and weak and will have penance to pay.

Posted by: Klooless Kook at June 24, 2004 10:29 AM

i'm over the morning sessions around here now, there's really no point. at least in the afternoons it's sunny. got some shitty/fun ones yesterday after work.

bagel you the man, definitely some inspiration to start drawing again.

Posted by: j at June 24, 2004 10:47 AM

Kook, I was down in San Diego county yesterday. Great waves and long rides and I even had the niceness vibe in the lineup. I did notice that it really was not the the workout that I have come to expect from Surfing. As was evidenced by the two dudes who were 230lbs or more making what appeard to be their daily trek on 10' logs.

I am off to drive as far south as it takes right now...

thanx for the props dogs..

i just finished putting together a little mini comic about surfing..free to niceness homies..ill have a bunch after this weekend

Posted by: bagel at June 24, 2004 10:50 AM

that is some cool art, bagel. got any shows coming up, or any stuff currently on display?

grr is right e. i rose at 5:45, and in retrospect should have waited just a few more minutes as today's early surfpulse report would have sent me back to bed. instead i made the drive to a hacked ob, and then down the coast all the way to pimpmoonbay, where i acknowledged defeat. might have ventured out at lindy or montara or the micro-jet if i had the log with me, but it was generally piddly and depressing out there. chris the surfline reporter must have had the rose-colored shades this morning - maybe next he'll be saying that Saddam is hosting an exhibit of his leftover WMDs for all his old al Qaeda colleagues in the surf zone at OB ... don't believe the hype!

stormsurf update from yesterday calls for the next swell to peak at 2.7 ft 15 secs on sunday, but as kaiser-stah noted yesterday, local winds are also forecast to be cranking up by then. sigh.

on the bright side, june will soon be past history, fletch...

Posted by: loon at June 24, 2004 10:55 AM

Hey Bagel , nice art work. I've seen your work before. Here are pics from the north, Blakestah helped with the forecasts and there was a huge swell that we were unable to find a sweet spot for. Here is an excerpt frrom the impending story....

Far away from Southern California lies a land without strip malls and freeways. The land is vast and green and trees as tall as skyscrapers replace the buildings and cities. The beaches, coves and points are endless and desolate. The sun rarely shines and the clouds rise above the frigid waters and keep the wild coast lush and moist. Surfing in this part of the world often involves long hikes, year-round cold water, large predators, magical landscapes and sometimes very unfriendly locals.
Look at a map and it is clear that Northern California starts north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The main highway north of San Francisco stays well inland, far from the jagged coast. Finding waves in the North is not easy, the surf is hard to get to, and it’s rarely working. Many of the better spots are on long, narrow, dirt roads that take an hour or more to get to. After the drive a hike of a mile or more is often necessary just to see if a spot is breaking. If a certain spot is not working, there is no driving up the coast to the next spot. You’ve got to turn around and make your way back to the highway and down another long road to the next surf spot. Granted, the drive and the hikes are gorgeous, tall redwoods, madrone and big leaf maple trees line the roads and trails along the coast. I’ve learned to look at the surf as a gift in the north, the icing on the cake. You can get a wonderful hike through the woods… but only occasionally will you be greeted by perfect olive green cylinders.

Anyhow, feedback is appreciated... Off to Costa Sunday

Posted by: mexi at June 24, 2004 11:18 AM

OB: tiny enough to make shortboarding drops highly improbable, hard onshore and 2 foot mush or crossed up 2 foot closeouts inside making longboard paddling rather obnoxious. Great combo! BUT for the perpetually optimistic, if one is silly enough, leave the pride at home and very odd, uh, "rides" are quite possible. Maybe 5 people in and out today, varying board sizes. Consider it cold water meditation. Gumby would be ripping it up.

re: transporters, what about this?

Posted by: j at June 24, 2004 11:43 AM

great tale mexi, my buddy lives up there on the lost coast, beautiful area. he is blessed with ******* just over the last mountain range from his little valley. there is a tiny break around those parts but the really cool thing about ******* is the ability to launch your boat and access miles and miles of coastline. I am trying to get him to buy a boat so I can come up there for a nice exploration. he knows all the locals and that helps up there, especially for any metropolitan guy like me. anyway, I am gonna try and do this in some fall conditions.

I used to go to school in Oregon and I always heard from many people that the ******* and ******* locals are very protective. never surfed up there myself, was too into snowboarding at the time. but that is a seriously rugged area.

check out sickshots.com. My friend Dave Collyer gave up his job, marraige, etc, bought a digital camera and laptop, and set out on the road. He's supported himself by selling surf shots to travellers. He's now on a continuous g-land, ments, and north shore loop. Doing 6 months hard time on Jordan's Saraina Koat boats in the ments this season. How's that for a job?

Here's some of his g-land stuff from last season:

mexisurf -- Dave the sickshot.com guy has the benefit of shooting perfect surf day in and day out, and he's shooting digital, so he can just shoot and shoot and shoot....

Seems like you're trying to go for the more fleeting moments, in fickle areas, shooting slide film. Which as I'm sure you know is a low-return game.

But you've gotten some gems with much richer color tones. It's a shame that the scans of your slides don't usually do them justice... You should do a slideshow when you get back from your travels.

Are you shooting any digital these day? I'm still shooting slides, but I've considered making the switch.

Posted by: lewis at June 24, 2004 03:41 PM

Lewis, still shooting slides, I will go digital when I can get 11 megapixels for a reasonable price, and I think even then I'll shoot slides on magical days.

It's that time.....

Posted by: mexi at June 24, 2004 03:54 PM

I've tried the 100 and I'm back on the 50, I usual overexpose by .3 stops.

Posted by: mexi at June 24, 2004 04:02 PM

bhphoto is a legit operation, too, unlike a lot of the cheaper places. if you're ever in NY you should check out their retail store, it's a different kind of place - all of the employees had these little pigtails coming from the side of their yamulkas. i can't remember what the term for it was though? oh, and their prices in store are the same as online.

Posted by: j at June 24, 2004 04:23 PM

i surfed in santa cruz county all morning and most of the afternoon. it was pretty glassy the whole time. when i exited the water (mid-town) at two o'clock, there had actually been a light offshore blowing for the last hour and it seemed like it was going to continue. my apologies to all the OB heads.

Posted by: bobby at June 24, 2004 04:58 PM

Thanks for the info- BH has everything.

I was always concerned that they pass package mail through those huge/ high power X-rays

As these rolls will travel half way around the world, many airport scans, I always have passed on the film mail order.

Any comments?

I like your artwork bagel. That broccoli guy looks a bit like me. That's why I wear a helmet. It's time for another trip. I'm heading down south for the long weekend. Maybe set my sites on a salty creek somewhere south of LA. Hope I can find a campsite this close to the holiday.

Posted by: Dennis at June 24, 2004 05:40 PM

BH Photo in NYC is a must stop for any NY Trip. The store is run by Hasidic Jews. They all have the yalmucka (sp?) and hair thing going. The NY accents are to die for and there is a weird overhead cage system which delivers goods from one end of the store to the other. As Friday sunset nears they ring an electronic bell and you better get your Gentile ass outta there or the Sabbath will roll over you like a 2,000 pound security gate. Shalom.
