Offshore in April

I am almost speechless this morning! I am not sure where to go with this here report soooooooo......

It FREAKIN good out there! Clean, crisp, offshore. South swell is clearly here or at least the forerunners are. Looked like we had some south in the water for the most part of the weekend which was nice.

My arms were exhausted this morning as I made my way down to the beach. I checked the SF bouy and saw 3.9 @ 11 sec. Almost headed back to the sack. Speaking of sack, SACK CHECK!!! Ok, glad to clear that up, grabbed the gear, out the door. At first sight, it looked glassy and fun with little shoulder high peelers. Nothing to write home about. Oh wait, whats that? Oh, that was nuggety.... Oh what's this.... Damn, its disgusting down there.... Damn, I gotta get on it! My perma-wet wettie crawled on ME at this point. I accomodated.

Enough. Did I say it is good out there? Its not. Its better. Its freakin April people. APRIL. Its offshore. Its April, its offshore, we have swell. Its almost May.

I am confused. I can't work. I can't focus. Its warm. I am done.

Oh yeah, E checked it with a little ditty about his trip thus far:
"what up niceness crew! not much time here... but... a little recap..

full-on nicaragua. Dusty, dirty, impoverished, friendly, ancient, primitive and exilerating. lerm and i have scored a might bounty of waves thus far. freezing cold water greeted us for the first few days. coldest i've ever been while surfing... no joke.. blue-lipped, jaw-chattering ice-water. crazy offshores causing some serious upwelling.. but the waves.. damn!! We've been blessed with consistent groundswell the entire time.. averaging 3 sessions a day (5 sessions 2 days ago). A-frame, lowers-like reefbreak with only 2 others for about 10 sessions.. then a punchy, A-framing, pocket-beach break for a few seshies, then a boat-trip to a deep-water mysto-reef with just 4 people.. loads of waves..

but.. wow.. the culture here.. the way of life, the flow of the people. eye-opening.. jaw-dropping.. mesmerizing.. life-affirming..

we are lucky.. most of the world lives VERY differently than we. ramshackle, agrarian, stone-age village life.. amazing..

surf!!

playa yankee tomorrow for the macking south swell.. then madera.. then el salvadorian right points for 2 weeks with jocular jake!!

peace"

The short and sweet of it is as follows:

Spring time south swell with offshore winds, not lots of current, tide just right, bit of wait between sets made it a snap to get back out after the wave which consisted of peaks, bowls, and walls.

Glad I did not miss it.

The Pathfinder was recovered by SF PD yesterday at 44th and Sloat. No word on the boards and other gear inside. Suspect apprehended.

Not sure why the guy would be anywhere near Sloat with a car he stole from there on the last heat wave but then again, I always knew his stupidity was in my favor.

What a fun week to be a surfer in SF! Got some nice ones all last week and all weekend, gonna hit the arvo session tonight after work too.

Only bad thing that happened was all the UN-niceness out at VFers on saturday morning. I have never been so blantantly dropped in on ever in SF, and I can't remember the last time I was dropped in on like that while surfing the Hook either!

A perfect wave came to me at the end of my session, I was perfectly lined up, turned and initiated paddling well before anyone else around me had, dropped in and low and behold the dude sitting a mere 5 feet away drops straight in on me. I mean this guy saw me going for this wave, I just don't get it!

Then I decided to just sit inside and take one in. A little wall comes right to me so I turn and start paddling, no one within at least 20 feet of me. Out of nowhere this guy comes paddling from my right (wave was a left) and paddles INTO ME and yells at me as he drops in claiming the inside. I was floored, I have never ever had that happen to me. Even in places like Zooport and santa cruz.

But then I went back sunday morning and caught a nice 2-3 second tube ride that blew my mind. Never been that long in the tube at OB, felt really good. I just love that sound of the wave enveloping you. Unreal.

Posted by: barney at April 26, 2004 10:30 AM

Ah, we all return to the scene of the crime.

The south spot was working and just about empty this am.

Rode the shortboard today. Longest genuine coverup barrel I have had in a very long time. Shot through one scetion completely inside. To my amazement I came out dry, looked up and the next section pitched over me just clearing my head for another barrel. Came out dry. IMO, if you don't come out of it standing, it ain't bein' tubed.

Soloed the outside peak for a while. Well overhead peaks shifted in across the bars and pitched out. Juiciful and smooth. Some critical takeoffs.

GO GET IT!

Posted by: kdalle at April 26, 2004 10:35 AM

saturday at OB was one of my top 5 sessions at OB ever. not that the waves were really epic or anything, i was just always in the right spot and really feeling it. sunday was fun too, but not quite as good. taking tomorrow off and heading south... what a week!

i also witnessed some ridiculous unniceness on sunday by a really smooth longboarder at kelly's who kept taking off behind people who were already riding the wave and screaming at them. luckily i managed stayed out of his way.

Posted by: bbr at April 26, 2004 10:37 AM

All that Mr. Doof said plus a couple of whales cruising around not far outside.

Posted by: R3W at April 26, 2004 10:43 AM

The whales were pretty cool, very close to the lineup. It was all niceness in the middle of the beach. But the waves were so much better at Vfer and Kelly's.

Posted by: mexisurf at April 26, 2004 11:14 AM

OB: What is this, October? Sure it's smaller, way mushier at the moment, and there's far less peaks. But god. Blindingly sunny with ethereal fog/smog haze on the horizon. Waist to shoulder predominant, larger ones pile through on rare whims. [ was larger this morn] Some south showing. Paddle is cake. Dunno what the tide change will do but I can't imagine it screwing things up too badly. For the love of Neptune, GO. Just....go. Warm, smooth, no wind or slight offshore. Call in sick, get surfers' scourge. Teach your boss to catch waves so he/she can sympathize the next time you bail to the beach. . Do what it takes, just get out and surf today! Will holler if/when it changes even better.

Shoutout to broken board guy this morning. Harsh looking wipeout on a 6-7 footer.RIP lovely longboard.

Nutsness in Kirkham Kounty! So very good, watching those A-phrames marching in from the south. So peaky, so glassy. Kdalle is precisely, exactly right when he says juiciful. The air is hot and blowing offshore - I love living in San Diego!

Posted by: redworm at April 26, 2004 11:16 AM

R3W...nice reminder re the whales. i didn't spy any from the line-up, but did see one cruising outside as i was suiting up yesterday. so kewl to see the Kings of the Deep gracing our presence again.

i scored a "small, but sunny" sesh at a not-so-secret secret spot south of SC on Saturday. a buddy and i had a frickin' steller cove and a gorgeous morning all to ourselves. if the waves had been a bit bigger, it would have been the stuff of dreams, but it was still a great time. a very "connecting" experience with both Mother Ocean and Mother Nature.

double-seshed locally yesterday and had a great time, but not quite the success that a few of you enjoyed! nice werk, heads!

peace.

Saturday a.m. - somewhere west of The Great Highway: Fun in the Sun. Tons of GOOD waves and a generally good vibe in the lineup; except for some attitude I got from one surfer in response to a friendly comment I made. How come some people think replying to friendliness with sarcasm is hip? Like, "I'm waaay too cool for YOU to talk to ME."
Sunday a.m. - at another location west of The Great Highway: waves not quite as good as Saturday, but still plenty fun. However, the session was marred by a collision. As I was paddling back out after a wave, I saw a surfer drop into a wave in front of me. So - like I was taught 40 YEARS AGO - I stopped and waited to see what he was gonna do. When he turned (awkwardly) into the wave, I started paddling for the white water to get out of his way and leave him the wave's face - again, like I was taught to do as a ten-year-old gremmie! As I was pushing through the broken wave, this bonehead cuts back through the soup and NAILS ME! I come up sputtering,"What the FUCK are you DOING!" He replies with, "What are YOU doing!" I then proceeded to make it clear to him that I was paddling for the white water to get out of his way. As I was checking my board for damage (none suffered), he was babbling something. I'm not sure what he was trying to say, it might've been that I should've gone for the SHOULDER!? WRONG! UNBELIEVEABLE! This guy did exactly the wrong thing, HITS ME and then tries to BLAME ME for the collision! I seethed for several minutes, stayed clear of this moron, got over it (mostly), and then got some more waves. SHEESH!
Thanks for listening. I'll be stuck at work and then have familial obligations in the late arvo. GO OUT THERE AND GET SOME FOR ME TODAY. AND BE NICE!

Weekend - soooo good!

Clean little waves, lots of fun. Definite non-regular OB-ers ventured out to join us this weekend. I’m all for sharing waves and stoke, but dude don't bring your buddy/girlfriend out with you a let them get slammed while you paddle elsewhere. Saw some seriously scared people out there who (while small) have never seen or been in waves with a little pop in them . . . who had to be helped in after getting their bell rung. As mentioned above, lots of poor etiquette was shown this weekend. But that's usually the case for those who don't know.

finally able to get to the beach for a short session yesterday. Surfed inside sloat. Fun, snappy rides with the occasional slamming on the sand just to keep your attention. Looked fun on the outside with a longboard with the occasion set rolling though. Love these warm, smooth days with some swell! Did anyone else see the MR2 convention in the parking lot at VFW's?? What was that about...i mean an MR2?? Whatever works.

I've been given preliminary clearance for an arvo session...maybe see some of you heads out there later...

jdz...saw the MR2 convention as I was leaving yesterday morning, some peeps have crazy hobbies!

I'll be out there after work (actually ditching early, 4ish) with the grey 6'4" SC Knot.

let's all go share in some niceness this afternoon.

Posted by: barney at April 26, 2004 12:56 PM

(Mainly repeating weekend posts, here.) Saturday sucked because my wetsuit zipper broke before I got any waves. Had to get extricated at Sonlight, who wanted me to leave the suit for WEEKS to get repaired. NO!

Saturday night I epoxyed the zipper closed (down low where it was busted & opening up on me). I can still get in and out of it okay, and the main thing is I can surf!

Sunday, far south of Linda Mar 8-9:30 with slow rollers for long rides that politely left paddling gaps; nice stuff to wake up to on a longboard.

Second session, Rockaway, 1:45 - 3:30. (I looked at Linda Mar, but it was surfer stew out there.) Bigger waves, steeeep faces, many close-outs, more of a paddling workout sometimes, but FUN. It's gonna be like this all spring and summer, right?

And the "vibe" was great both sessions. I nearly (er, maybe even actually, a little) bumped sides with another longboarder as we came in on different directions on a wave where pulling out wasn't in the cards, but we managed to avoid both any nasty collision and any nasty attitudes.

It has been a great weeekend and today....

But, not to be Captain Bringdown or nothing:

We as a nation are poised to invade Falluja in the next few days. I happened to see "Blackhawk Down" (if you haven't check it out and note the parallels to Rumsfield's Iraq strategies- if it didn't work once try again?) this weekend and was terrified- an extremely visceral face was put on what is ongoing in Iraq which crept in while I was at the beach this weekend (thank my lucky ass....). The election battle is becoming pitched and now Bush is questioning the integrety of one of Kerry's Purple Hearts publically! Was he wounded enough (!) to deserve it?!

So check this link:
https://www.moveonpac.org/donate/warrecord.html?id=2729-2677301-2x9V6Yxy6xiyZEIQLTbxIA

and maybe send some pennies in- if you don't know about Move On it is a remarkable organization and I don't give money to nothing that ain't Surfrider or the Sierra Club....

We are super lucky here, super lucky.

Oh yeah- see you at the beach!

Posted by: goodmorning at April 26, 2004 01:11 PM

Also read "Killing Pablo" by the same author, pretty crazy book about politics in South America and US involvment. And also Pablo Escobar, who didn't do coke, just smoked J's all day and night.

ibid on elias's comments...

i surfed saturday/ sunday (2x) and today...my arms are
cooked pasta. today is definitely bigger today than either
of the previous 2. by quite a bit. the inside today at low
tide (11.22a) was sick barrels for days. very shifty peaks.
the outside was feathering/ breaking...sort of today and
was not yesterday.

glad to see that someone else saw that whale.
and i am not seeing things. although my retinas
do seem to be cooked after the last 72 hours.
what month is this!?:? in what part of california??!!

no pinching either. i don't wanna wake up yet.

and if you are reading this and wondering....
just go. the boss, the wife.....tell them it can wait.
seriously.

peace to all and bring the niceness back to ob.

it HAS been too aggro out there. i have burn stories
but would rather they fade and the memories of
phat barrels and big turns remain.

Hey all. Just got in from a killer little inside Sloat session on a borrowed board that I think I'm going to get a copy of. Is it okay to covet thy friend's board....?

Also checking in because I just got tipped about the little discussion going on with Blue Horizon, surf shops, etc. Definitely go check out Blue Horizon. I'm pretty sure Wise is not making any money off it, they're just presenting the film. McCoy is going HUGE with this tour, and I completely respect that. Granted, he has a fantastic budget to work with, but the fact that he's doing it and making surf films means you've gotta support 'em.

Wise presenting the film is fine, they're doing it not for money but to be *involved* in the surf community. I don't want to start slinging shit at all, but he's definitely pulled some shenanigans towards local surf shops that solidifies me never dropping a dime there.

I am incredibly humbled at your positive comments towards our film screenings that I do with Aleks/Aqua. We work really hard (and even harder on our ridiculous surf horror films), and having a solid crew in the audience only makes us want to do more. Also, just to clear up, Aleks and I make enough money at the screenings to buy a couple rounds at Hockey Haven for friends that have helped out.

That's it, my 2 cents. I'm really stoked to see Blue Horizon, and to be a drunk audience member instead of a drunk organizer. Remember, Balboa is very tight with bringing in the hooch, so smuggle 'em good!

ps- Go surfing, it's farkin beautiful out. I have to go to work now in Oakland. In a hot-ass bakery no less. Aloha.

Surfed this dawn with Doof and Kdalle, though not on the same peak. Many Crazy trips into the tube. Not many exits for me, but a lot of time in there.

Just got back from a Lunch-sesh (12-1). First really good left I got, the best part of the ride was feeling the warm wind blowing up the face and into me in the pocket. Lots of nice long rides on the outer bar.
The water surface started to feel like the whole surf zone was one big rip or something. As the session wore on, conditions got more textured. By the end, the wind was more side shore than off and picking up steam.

May want to get it sooner rather than later. It is April after all, folks.

Aloha... the moon, sun, waves, wind, tide, swell all lined up today on the southshore of Oahu for an epic morning. Glassy conditions, overhead sets, clean lines and no crowds. All the weekend warriors were surfed out from this first south swell of the season. Definitely my top day in Hawaii thus far. Surfed until the arms gave out. Happy to hear the niceness crew was on it also in SF! Isn't life great?

Headed down the LA on Friday and surfed Pismo on the way down. It sucked, but it was sunny and warm and I got wet. Sorry if I mentioned someone's "secret" spot.

So, I did the DP drive this AM since there was some swell in the water and my friend lost his Pt. Dume key privileges. Surfed a mysto spot in SC and it was damn fun. What's up with it being 93 degrees in SC? I left LA to escape the heat. However, some folks in the line up still had booties, gloves and hoods on!! It was farking baking... almost was wishing for the 3/2.

Oh, the water is sooo clear right now. Probably the clearest I can remember it being in quite some time. Saw about a group of about 30 dolphins and a whale to boot.

Tom, good news on the rig. Kaiser, good job with the report. Blakestah, nice job with the weather. Kdalle, way to find the green room (yes, standing on exit or it doesn't count). E and Lerm, we hate you, but way to score.

Still surfable, usual suspect peak/s (? kinda peaks right now) full of peeps, but there's a couple of innocuous half-arsed thumping slush spots out there. Sunny/hazy. Bring your hardcore mooshgun and charge. Cheers,

I just wanted to let you guys know that I am making all of this possible (along with some help from Christian). I left the Bay Area for the week to go to Tokyo. So enjoy

but beware, Wednesday looks kinds like high pressure will move offshores, and Northwest Wind will come back. Tuesday should be about as good a south swell spring day as we get.

And please enough with the naming of street names and ends of the beach. Listen to Jimmie, it is enough to say "west of the Great Highway". At least be cryptic. Like the poor fools that live on Kirkham and Pacheco really need a crowd of idiots descending on the breaks there.

saw 2 broken boards on my way to the waves. Love it when you duck dive a bomb and hit the sand with your board, you know you are going to get worked.

Posted by: bagel at April 26, 2004 05:56 PM

on second thought - the surfing was lousy today, hated it. if true information is bad, then is not disinformation good? Kaiser could do the homies some serious good by just mis-reporting good days as bad. in truth, the beach is not like some obscurely-angled point that only works on such-and-such a swell/tide combo. to not let the cat out of the bag too much, the entire beach appeared to be firing today, from the cliff house to ft. funhouse.

that said, it is probably true that time-hoarding types bombing in from soma for a lunch session will forgo the leisurely end-to-end great highway drive and jet straight to the avenue they've seen singled out as cracking or juiciful in these pages. therefore my Papa pledge to the foot-distance people of the outer sunset: never never again with the name of the ave on the day of the good surf.

i find myself probably barred from the Kounty for the second time, even though my hooting and yapping skills have improved tenfold as a result of the first "don't come 'round here no more" i received right here a while back on n-ness. i am Kursed when it comes to the Kounty - first the K-street Kops bar me for being too quiet, now a reprimand for spilling the beans.

Kaiser, upon your return feel free to go back to my first post and edit out said street name.

Posted by: redworm at April 26, 2004 06:24 PM

I didn't want to get into a whole locals vs other thing...

but the people who live within walking distance often surf almost always at the same place. Like my neighbor, he is 1.5 blocks in, and he never surfs anyplace else.

We watch people descend on the beach, hither nither, but the thing that really is un-niceness is when everyone and their brother shows up at the spot YOU walk to. Let those who drive in find their sandbar - if they surf more than once a week they'll find the good spots anyway. But please don't place a bullhorn and identifying spotlight on some poor street that is likely no better than many others just because you had a good time there.

Good surfing to all.

Posted by: blakestah at April 26, 2004 06:35 PM
