New Sheriff In Town...

Bouy: 4.3 ft @ 15 sec...

Wind: 3 mph from the SE

Tide: Low

Surf Prediction: Extremely promising from our dot bombie gadgetry reports!

The Real Deal: Gloomy, small, gutless, pointless, dribbling-little nothings. At least the wind was good. Made the drive down the beach twice hoping that I would see some of that 4.3 @ 15 somewhere along our 3 miles of bliss but it was clearly just a myth this morning. Out of all honesty, the only reason I got wet this morning was to validate this here report. I always feel that you gotta get wet to have a real opinion. Well, after 45 minutes in the water, my opinion is that it is small out there. Got a few waves but nothing of interest. Only about 6 guys out. Of course I was glad to get in and rinse off all the clorination I got from the Stubbies Pro '04 held in Phoenix, AZ this weekend. On my way back last night, I was taken back by page 40 of United's inflight mag with a full page spread of one of our hidden treasures: an SF point break, only 4 guys on it.... EXPOSED!

Anyway, looks like a new big wave world record was set with Pete Cabrinha of Hawaii picking off a 70 footer at Jaws to win the Billabong XXL. Going left of course..... Check the pic below.

Also, congrats to Zach Wormhoudt for winning the paddle contest. Good to see that Mavs represented again this year with the biggest paddle wave of the year. HOWEVER, I mean no disrespect, but you vote and tell me which one of these waves looks bigger to you (maybe I was just hoping Alex would get the nod):

Zach's wave:

70 ft. Left @ Jaws: Billabong Winner!

Ahhhh, snizzle. First try and I got it right! Good stuff. We are back in business folks......

If you got something, send me an email and we can get it posted up!

Posted by: Kaiser at April 19, 2004 10:18 AM

nice Kaiser. going out in that slop just for the knitting report. alex does look smaller on that wave than the other guy. yesterday sucked, a lot.

Posted by: bagel at April 19, 2004 10:29 AM

well, I finally got something done. I got my 7'9" Hinds coffee-table-special retro-fitted with the RFS unit, and tested it this morning. Although it may have looked like gutless dribble, at the right places, there were hucking head high pitchy beasts frothing in.

The RFS on a bigger board feels a lot like it on smaller boards. turns really well, super super fast, and you gotta step right on the fin to get it to hold a really critical turn. And you can push through turns to generate a lotta thrust. But this one wave...

Took off, ramped down, hit my bottom turn, and then pumped it down the line, each pump increasing my speed more and more, and the wave cooperating nicely. As I pulled off the back, I realized I had NEVER gone this fast on a small gutless day before - the speed felt like a genuine DOH outer bar wave! It's a whole new ballgame.

Remember, all the best breaks are at VFWs and Sloat!!!

Also, superman, it'd be sweet if you could half-size those photos and link em to the real ones - this page is gonna be 800 pixels wide all day.

Also, Cabrinha is primarily a WINDSURFER.

Also, Alex had a bigger wave, but Zach was pushing in deeper.

Posted by: blakestah at April 19, 2004 10:49 AM

Good on Ya Kaiser,

Alex is hucken more and biiger, side view as seen by Kranks side view shows the throwing lip...

Posted by: mexisurf at April 19, 2004 10:53 AM

Kaiser- you bring something new to this page never before offered by e ---predictions in to the future with photgraphic evidence...check the date on that Alex bomb

Posted by: big mig at April 19, 2004 10:54 AM

B-Stah, I wanted to do that but I couldn't figure out how to change the size down from the source. I need to email MWSF on that one. I think E was posting them at like 530 x 350 or something. Since they source from other locations, tough to change the size. Worst case, I think I can remove them. Let me see what is up.

Posted by: Kaiser at April 19, 2004 10:55 AM

Kaiser - All right! We's in bidnizz up in hea-ah!
Had some fun at Pedro the last couple of days - crowded, but fun. The person snakin' me was my kid - that's what I get for takin' him to the beach.
I'd also have to say that Alex's wave looks like it could be bigger than Zach's. But it's hard to tell - a good chunk of Alex's looks to be hidden by the soup from the preceding wave. But what do I know? Most of the time I'm just another old man on an aircraft-carrier, stinkbuggin' it at Pedro.

Posted by: Jimmie at April 19, 2004 11:06 AM

alex's definitely looks bigger and heavier, but it may just be the angle it's shot from.

Posted by: bbr at April 19, 2004 11:19 AM

kaiser, try adding
WIDTH=400
to the img tag for the Cabrinha image.

Also, people, see
This other angle of Alex's pic to compare more directly to Zach's.

Hasta la vista, babee!

Posted by: blakestah at April 19, 2004 11:19 AM

kaiser, props for keeping it real here. the natives where restless.

tom, nice posts on friday. did you have fun "practicing"?

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at April 19, 2004 11:27 AM

alright a BIG disagreement from me
re: this a.m.

yeah small it was BUT i surfed
VFW's with 2 other guys for a while
(until they paddled south a ways) and
then had a peak to myself and one other
dude on a blue board from 7.50 to 8.30 or so
and it was niceness in every way......
scored several nice barrels.
ins and outs on 4 or 5 not so much outs
on a few others.

just stoked fer some glass in the spring.

and speaking of non-glass....

was MUCH better than yesterday though.
those waves with the huge humps (other waves
in the faces at vfw's from 10.30 > noon-thirty
were a freak show and made for some
interesting turns.....

niceness to all......and alex did get snookered
on that xxl gig. bummer.

Posted by: korewin at April 19, 2004 12:15 PM

Hey Blakestah, how about putting up the 3rd shot from Frank's Sequence where it's throwing out 15feet, I think that shows itm best...

Posted by: mexisurf at April 19, 2004 12:20 PM

Okay, paul, we'll see if Mavsurfer let's me link through.

BTW, if anyone has our favorite white-gath-wearing lifeguard's cell num, email it to me. He is supposed to test the RFS funboard, and I didn't grab his number. Tom, maybe?

Posted by: blakestah at April 19, 2004 12:27 PM

back online...nice work kaiser. Good to hear from Christian as well. It would be interesting to see how the judging committee actually measures out the photos to determine the winner...in any event Alex should be extremely proud of what he accomplished!!!

and is it me or are we seeing a more user-friendly, light-hearted version of the blakestah??? I detect a subtle yet increasing level of stoke in those posts....keep it up.

Posted by: jdz at April 19, 2004 12:29 PM

BTW, my favorite Alex is in this movie
http://www.keck.ucsf.edu/~dblake/ob111903.mov

He pulls into a right barrel on inner bars. He has this cat-like quickness when shortboarding that is really poetic to watch. This one day early fall I was out with him and Christian and 10000000 others and the Brazilian Mafia were in the tube quite a lot.

Posted by: blakestah at April 19, 2004 12:29 PM

Damn, the Sheriff is getting this site all outta whack! See what listening to Blakestah does? Ha...

Christian, great comments on Alex. I am sure the people that really know how big the waves were are the guys like you that are out in the water. Pictures are great and all but the truth comes from your peers. The people in the line up know how big the waves are. This computer jockey could never tell whether Pete Cabrinha's wave was a new record at 70 ft. or 68 ft. But then again, how do you honestly know the difference of 2 ft. in height when you have the state on Maine about to rip your dish clean off?

Posted by: Kaiser at April 19, 2004 12:40 PM

sweet video...gawd damn that looked like a fun day....

Posted by: jdz at April 19, 2004 12:49 PM

Blakestah, If you don't get S's # email me later, I have it at home....MEXISURF not paul

Posted by: mexisurf at April 19, 2004 01:00 PM

As I plummeted headfirst over the top of the short but steep lip - 100% airborn, straight down, flailing froggy dive style - I thought,
" Ahh, so *this* is THE KAISER[tm], that infamous superman fall." Then the impact ripped my glove off.

Much respect and awe to Alex and all other humble rippers. Incredible surfing. Mind blowing.

Posted by: s.s. sharkbait at April 19, 2004 01:21 PM

from my point of view Alex got ripped off. but i have'nt even seen mavericks break from the beach. im super used to seeing footstraps if a wave's that big nowadays though. but very cool to see him recognized, and he sounds stoked and that is awesome. papa Ragnar is representing in that video as well. that was a good day (not like yesterday which sucked)

Hey Blake,

Ya know the last two rides of that video, that guy is supremely dialed,....There's a perfect gouge in the second to last ride. It's amazing how one turn can seem to "sum up" the overall talent and stoke. You know the one I'm talking about? My next five sessions I'm gonna being thinking only about that turn.

cheers,

Posted by: Jack at April 19, 2004 01:52 PM

That gouge was Jesse.

Ragnar had a pretty good one earlier.

Ahhh, fall...

OK, after viewing Blakestah's excellent vid I am making an effort to ride a shorter board for a while.

Posted by: kdalle at April 19, 2004 03:09 PM

kaiser,

Nice job on you maiden report.

Heads-up to the niceness crew. Came in from a session at VFW's yesterday and ran into a guy who had his hidden key under his bumber and had it stolen during his session. Ended up the thief swiped his wallet, leaving everything else. So keep your keys on you and eye's open.

Posted by: d looose at April 19, 2004 03:16 PM

Bait, consider yourself "superhero'd"! That is how we do it! Just make sure you have your cape on and spot your landing...

Superman, "trying to paddle out"! Only been denied once but that was the worst feeling ever. Got back on the horse and tried it again. 2 attempts and got shut out. However, I do believe that was a good day that Blakestah shot if I remember correctly!

Posted by: Kaiser at April 19, 2004 03:19 PM

you guys would s**t if you saw just how un-crowded it really was. of course we thought is was crowded. nothing like today's standards.

Posted by: 3to5setsof7 at April 19, 2004 03:23 PM

Denied only ONCE?!!!

You ARE superman.

Posted by: kdalle at April 19, 2004 03:35 PM

i will never hide my key again after getting ripped off near VFWs. get a suit with a key pocket or one of those neck chains somebody suggested. this is a huge problem at the beach, the cops told me it happens all the time. i keep my key in my suit and hide my wallet every session now.

also... it's extemely easy to pry open most truck shells. leave your shit in the cab, not the shell. i've been ripped off this way too.

Posted by: bbr at April 19, 2004 03:37 PM

hey kaiser - thanks for picking up the slack during e's absence, looks like everyone is playing along real nice. i am willing to help out if you need a break...

Posted by: loon at April 19, 2004 03:37 PM

Regarding the Landlord: Anyone ever heard of shark camo? Check out the website: http://www.sharkcamo.com/. It looks like an interesting idea, the kind that could be brilliant...or a total waste of money. Thoughts?

Posted by: luke at April 19, 2004 03:49 PM

waste of money.

i wonder what this guy was worried about 20 years ago..probably alot.

http://www.ibiblio.org/jmaynard/TRONcostume/

Posted by: bagel at April 19, 2004 04:03 PM

sharkcamo sucks, i used it in bolinas and got bit twice...took it off and havent had a problem since. could been the seal blubber i had tied to my leash that day? dunno really.

Posted by: dsx at April 19, 2004 04:11 PM

have had my shit stolen out of the back of my truck so many times here in SF. they just yank the shell door open and break the hinges. always carry the key in the suit and keep all things expensive or not replacable in the car.

but they will pay, oh yes, they will

Posted by: barney at April 19, 2004 04:23 PM

what's up niceness! duuuuuude, I can't believe E left the keys of the site with Kaiser, that kooky gringo!! he's always claiming these "monster buckets" that he dumps, but I've seen more water drip down my chin when I think about a phat slice of East Coast pizza. Sure Superman has some clever sarcasm with which to entertain us -- but someone dose his cup and let's get the report kickin' again with some psychedelic vibrations! Sleuth inside some sucky bowls and meander down meadows of myopic mindspace in an eerie early mission, bro! At least we know the site is in no danger of going bust, with Lucky "what Internet Bubble burst? Let's go play pinball in the coffee room, guys" Surfer Kaiser at the helm.

Well in other news besides heckling that large Barney ya'll call "Boss" on this here site now... I think I'll be moving back to SC after Hurricane Season... so I'll see you niceness heads for next winter! Hopefully I'll handle the 35 degree drop in water, yikes!! The Pura Vida life remains Blessed... Todo Tranquilo - Un Amor... but it's time for me to bring some of this love back to the States to share it with family and phriends. Until June, it's all coconut palms, tan skin, Imperials, and bud that gives me headaches.

One Love Niceness... keep on rockin' that good vibe!

oh yeah, i had something on topic to say: I've seen that Camo shark stuff before, and while it seems like an interesting idea, and some of the research has been promising -- I think when it comes to Nature, you never really know what kind of effect changing a variable like that is going to have... I never bought into it thinking that perhaps the Camo would stop local Landlords from recognizing me as a Surfer that they would otherwise not confuse for food... who knows...

Posted by: jake at April 19, 2004 04:32 PM

I had my 78 Honda Civic stolen at Kelly's back in 89, I only use the leash pocket now. I also rigged a contraption in my truck bed that lets me stash stuff underneath it like boards and such, thieves can get into the shell but can't get into that part because it's locked and bolted down.

hide the kay and your just asking to ripped off

Posted by: mexisurf at April 19, 2004 04:45 PM

Anyone been out this afternoon? I think those south-winds-are-offshore locales should be good if enough swell can get in those coves. Could be fun, not high tide but on its way.

Anyone?

Oh yeah, Jimmie, I was out last Thursday night but I was in front of the bathrooms not the fast food joint. Red Coffey fishy thing, couldn't miss it.

Posted by: Kaiser at April 19, 2004 04:51 PM

got my new skateboard and my clothes stolen out of my old bug around 92' at kelly's lot. the suckers didnt look under my drivers seat for my car keys and wallet though. had to ring my friends doorbell on haight street in a wetsuit. that was lame. i blame never learning how to ollie on those bastards.

a good way to not get your stuff stolen is reverse psycology. leave all your doors wide open and go surfing. worked out great for me a couple of months ago.

jake putting us all to shame.

Posted by: bagel at April 19, 2004 04:58 PM

The reverse psych thing works. I always take my key with me, but leave my wallet and cds in the car. Once I forgot to roll up the windows and lock the car. When I got back I expected everything to be gone but nothing was.

Posted by: shak at April 19, 2004 05:24 PM

ok...put this in the "non sequiter"(sp?)folder...but any of you guys with kids ever rented/seen the video "there goes a bulldozer" for your kids??? I swear to god the music in this thing is the same music that's in like every porno I've ever seen...weird...not that I've seen a lot of porn or anything...really. Good video though...at least my 2.5 year old seems to be enjoying it.

hmmm...swell coming...maybe I can get in one last session before baby #2 comes...due any minute now so who knows...

out

Not to noc Alex wave (it is bigger) but I believe the reason the award went to Zac was because he completed his ride whereas Alex did not.

Just my 2 cents
