E's Surf Report

Hit it at VFers this morning. Fun little sesh although the wave repellant was in full effect for me. Super shifty peaks. North end of the beach was pretty much completely deserted. Wave quality was good, although I didn't check further south on the Beach.

San Francisco is by far and away the dirtiest city in the U.S. for the ammount of revenue the city has. Nowhere else is there human feces, garbage, needles, used condoms, soiled clothing, etc. on the streets in the quantity that exists here, and thats the nice areas, have you been downtown lately? we need serious change, this city is disgusting. I have lived here for 12 years and it gets worse year after year.

i believe that someone that lives with roomates in a rental understands the needs of a large part of sf than someone who lives in a mansion in pac heights. also, look at the financial backers, and understand the alliances.

hit sliz this morning. looked frickin' great from the parking lot, but by the time i had suited up conditions were already deteriorating. took a surprisingly long time to get out through the beach break (i think i paddled out during the longest set that i saw all morning!)...but once outside it was smooth with just a gentle scallop on the water from the offshores. managed a few fun drops...and short rides. it was strange. the waves would roll in lookin’ like they were about to break as wide A-frames, but then back off. then they’d hit the inside bars and the bottom would drop out to form a sweet bowl…albeit a bowl that lasted all of 1 second before the pitching lip slammed it shut like a clam shell! then, rather than offering a shoulder, the waves would instantly mush out. too much tide i guess. either that or my wave-repellent was in force.

the star of the show was the sunrise. bottom-lit rose-colored clouds from the horizon to the sea. sweet.

Like ck, I was at Sloat this am. Very small but smooth shoredumpers. Rode my shortboard for the first time in a while. Good to feel the responsiveness and acceleration.

WRT the election. I have been involved for months with veterans on both sides. Simplistic sloganeering does not begin to help inform anyone. Politics is very complex and in San Francisco especially, a blood sport. I wouldn't at this late date begin to try to explain my rationale for selection except to say this: I think Matt Gonzalez might make a great friend but, I wouldn't want any of my friends to be mayor. Newsom has done his homework and I believe he should be the chance to demonstrate that he has the best interests of San Francisco in his DNA.

BTW, who's heading south in the next 2 day. Could be all time.

Did anyone read the articles on homelessness in the chronicle last week. One "fact" that came across clearly was that homeless people are migrating to SF from all over the country to take advantage of our cash and leniancy (sp). If this is the case the problem will continue to get worse until something is done.

I didn't know Gonzalez lived in a rental with roomates. That's interesting.

Sorry to start this with the first post but hey, for one day a year political talk is in order. Just remember that we're all friends when talking about waves, let's not get too upset at one another when talking politics.

About the homeless problem, both candidates have addressed what they will do towards decreasing homelessness. Gonzalez goes into great detail about what should be done to curb homelessness in this policy paper. Newsom's Care Not Cash program sounds great but lacks the services and funding to work. It's basically just a political smokescreen. Gonzalez has proven time and time again that he can get things done effectively in a practical manner.

Newsom is just another slimeball politician. His "alliance" with Angela Alioto in which he promised her a high-ranking position in his administration in exchange for her endorsement shows that the cronyism we experienced under Willie Brown isn't going to change. His mudslinging assertion that Matt Gonzalez is racist and sexist because he refused to approved Willie Brown's underqualified appointments is ludicrous. Newsom is not an ethical or trustworthy candidate, Gonzalez is.

As to the local vs. transplant comment, Matt Gonzalez is far more in line with the spirit of the city than Gavin Newsom. Do you think someone who flies around the country in the Getty's private jet, had his wedding at the Getty Mansion, and appears frequently in the society pages represents the average San Franciscan? Forget it. Gonzalez has spent his professional career working for the people. And remember, even Herb Caen was a transplant.

Newsom's haircut is waaay to dorky..actually gonzales's is more dorky..Newsom just looks like a wiener though...one time i saw him at a thai food place on filmore..

1. MG slapped that policy paper together two weeks ago from a variety of proposals that have been floated for years because he was accused of having no policy. It is not coherent and has no track record. Newsom's proposals have worked in other cities. Just to put the nail n this coffin, Gonzalez supported Daly's proposal which was identical word for word to Newsoms with one change, the word shelter to home.
2. The Alioto thing has to do with state and national politics in order to defeat the Republicans. It really has nothing to do with SF and you won't hear from her again.
3. Newsom didn't make the racist remark. Brown did and good riddens to him.
4. Gonzalez is from a similar bqackground. Uncle was a mayor of large city. Father was division cheif for Brown & Williamson, etc, etc.
5. Gonzalez still refuses to release his tax returns as Newsom did even though he promised it days ago. Claims he can't find it.
6. Gonzalez actually has a long record of thwarting legislation approved by the voters and very few accomplishments.
7. Actually, Harvey Rose stated that Care Not Cash was doable but that some of the statiscal information could not be verified because Pal Boden and the Coalition for Homelessness refuse to validate and homeless statistics.

Like I said, it's very arcane and complex. Matt Gonzalez is a neophyte compared to Newsom. In the bureacratic world he's called a "mushroom"-- The experienced bureaucrats will keep him in the dark and feed him sh*t.

Overall the conditions looked really skittery - could go either way on the improve/deteriorate scale... seems like it could either stay one way the rest of the day or switch back and forth a couple of times. I was going to keep out of this but... I was actually undecided about the election until this morning. My left side wanted an underdog green person to shake up the political arena. My center wanted a Democrat in office because it has a bearing on the bigger political picture in the state and in the country. I really do not care for Republican right gaining strength cuz of a divided two party left. That's why Clinton and Gore got involved. My right side wants to get homeless off the street and panhandler to disappear. I also believe that big business is good for the city.
And most unpopular (I am a renter) is that I believe that rent control is a very bad thing for all of us in the city. Why? Rent control makes developers not want to build apartments. Notice all the condos going up? Rent control prevents the property owners from upgrading the property due to lack of funds. I have first hand experience with this one. Leaky roofs in older houses anyone? Some changes need to made to the current system-Newsome is in favor of changes.

Bottom line: The center and right of me won out. I voted for Newsome. I don't trust in the ability or integrity Gonzales.

as for me, yes the homeless issue for me is the single biggest issue in SF. it casts a shadow so long and wide that anything else should be secondary.

as a new homeowner in SF paying 2 very very large tax checks a year to SF city coffers and having to step over feces and humans to get to my car just to have to step over similar humans and feces to get to my office, i am pissed everyday.

the renters in SF are like most of my friends, here one year gone the next.(although there are some life long renters) it is sad, i have had 6 friends move out of SF this year alone. 2 surf buddies are gone and solo trips down south are the norm these days....but thats is SF, it is very transient and by the very nature of renting nothing ties you to a certain area. not to demean the renters but the true tax payers, ie homeowners be them rich or poor are the people who most accurately represent SF, IMHO.....

just one more tax payer hoping not to step in shit today.

The very nature of our democracy holds that you are represented equally whether you be a renter or homeowner. Just because someone is only here a short time does not entitle him to be short-shrifted in representation in government.

I agree that homelessness is a top priority. It's pretty unclear to me which candidate has the edge in that - Newsom with his new ideas that have huge implementation problems, or Gonzales with no ideas.

As the endorsements indicate, Newsom has a reputation as a good, hard-working, and smart businessman and Supervisor. They are informative, and make it clear that Newsom is a far more capable mayor (note: I consider this irrespective of positions).

Of course, positions count too. Better to hire an inneffective person you agree with or an effective one whose positions are not quite aligned with yours? This is my problem today.

Also, Gonzales aids terrorist animal rights organizations through his Supervisor position, which really personally pisses me off.

San Francisco has been known as a place for its sympathetic treatment of the impoverished since, at least, the late sixties/early seventies. But there wasn't anywhere near the problem with homelessness in this town until the oxymoron of "...unstable people rejected by the mental health care system..." (!?) became a tragic reality when actor-turned-governor, RONALD REAGAN gutted the mental health care system and booted those needing care out onto the street. What is needed is a committment to provide real mental health care, including addiction treatment. Whether, or not Matt Gonzales, as mayor of San Francisco, can be a positive influence to that end, I do not know. However, I DO KNOW that the likes of Gavin Newsome will ONLY cater to the wishes of the rich. Face it, if he were trying to get elected ANYWHERE but San Francisco, he would be a Republican! Unless you own rental property in SF AND don't give a SHIT about other people you better get out there and vote for MATT GONZALES!
That being said, I know some Republicans (yeah they are here among us) who will vote for Matt Gonzales in hopes of breaking up the Feinstein/Pelosi/Burton Democratic Triumvirate. Ah, wheels within wheels…

Jimmie- In any other town Newsom would be too far left for many liberals. You must not have first-hand experience with Republicans in the outland. BTW, it is well-known that newsom has done many charitable works that he doews not want publicized.

Blakestah-Cut the politics. What about the wind tomorrow! WRT the election, any homeless program has implementation problems. But, modeling it based on the best practices from other cities is a realistic starting point. No mayor ever gets to implement their campaign proposals without major modifications. With Gonzalez as the President of the BOS you can rest assured he will not have a blank check.

I too own a home in San Fran, and I pay taxes. A vote for Gavin Newsom would probably improve property values. There are other values that are more important.

Here is something for you all to think about:

Where do you see the campaign signs for each candidate?

On a Business, or plastered on light posts or placed somewhere else by someone paid to do it?

Or is it in someone's window, or someone's hand as they volunteer their time?

Should we vote for the CARE put in by supporters?

Or should we vote for the CASH paid for that support?

That one word makes a big difference.

ex. I live in a shelter vs. I live in a home.

Didn't Newsom previously make that implication by asking Gonzalez why the appointees he opposed for city commissions "disproportionately come from the minority community?" Newsom was sitting next to Willie Brown when he made the other remarks. True, he tried to distance himself from Brown's remarks but the damage had already been done. Smells fishy.

Gonzalez also chose to forgoe a potentially highly lucrative career as a corporate attorney in order to work for 10 years as a public defender. That shows where his heart is at. In contrast, Newsom has spent that time involved in entrepreneurial efforts to grow his personal wealth. This is not necessarily a bad thing but certainly coming from a different space than Gonzalez.

5. Gonzalez still refuses to release his tax returns as Newsom did even though he promised it days ago. Claims he can't find it.

I agree, that's odd.

Leading the Board in balancing the city's horrendous budget was a pretty big accomplishment.

Matt Gonzalez is a neophyte compared to Newsom.

Gonzalez is less experienced and has passed less legislation, yes, but as president of the Board of Supervisors, he's shown that he can be an effective leader.

For me, I think that Gonzalez represents a much broader spectrum of San Franciscans than Newsom. If you are very wealthy or own rental property in San Francisco, vote for Newsom and he will definitely protect your interests. If you feel the right thing to do is to support someone that represents the interests of all San Franciscans, vote for Gonzalez.

And it's friggin' windy outside!! Can't be good for the waves...

kdalle - Actually, I've got lots of experience living in Republican constituencies: I grew up in San Diego and spent 4 years in Lake Tahoe. I still have family in both of those communities and stay in touch with what's up there. I even had a couple of misspent years in Tucson, Arizona (what we'll do for "LOVE"!). But you are absolutely right. Newsome may be CONSIDERED too "liberal" for many Republicans in other parts of California (and elsewhere), but the folks he's carrying water for here in San Francisco are the closest thing to Republicans this town will allow to drape themselves in nobles-oblige (sic), while shuddering past the homeless-crazies on their way to Neiman-Marcus.

On to surf related travel information...I'm going to Ecuador in late Jan on a surf trip. I read a warning on the http://www.wannasurf.com/ website (a great site to gather info for surf trips) that told of a scam in the airports there. It said that upon leaving the country the airport tried to charge them $700 US to fly out with a board. This is crazy! Does anyone have any experience flying out of Ecuador with boards???

Thanks to Jimmie for noting the historical context of homelessness. As much as the conditions in many of the mental health institutions of those days were horrible, I wish that what we see in the streets today was more readily associated with Reagan's legacy. And in that light, how ironic that he would be competing with FDR for the headshot on the dime. But I digress...

A subset of the homeless population known as the "chronically homeless" are very often the same people that would have been in those institutions in the old days. They usually have a mental illness, at least one physical disability, and a substance use problem. (Tough crowd.)

Research shows that most homeless people are homeless for a short period of time. Most of the services geared toward the homeless are done so in a way that best serves this temporarily homeless type of population -- lending a helping hand until they get back in their feet/housed. Research also shows that the long-term homeless (only 20% of the homeless population) use over 50% of the emergency resources available. These same people tend to overuse emergency health care, and also cost taxpayers by winding up in one of the most expensive forms of subsidized housing available -- jail. The solution that has been identified for this dilemma is the creation of "supportive housing" -- housing with supportive services built-in. The housing takes many shapes and forms, and it requires a lot of money to build & fund, and even more patience to work in such buildings, but there is data to show that it works and does so at cost savings to society. It also frees up the emergency resources so the the more typically homeless person can more readily access the services needed to bounce back on a short-term basis.

Perhaps not surisingly, San Francisco is one of the leaders in creating supportive housing. It is part of a growing strategy to look realistically at the resources needed THROUGHOUT the various systems to end homelessness (instead of just make it less visible). Unfortunately, San Francisco is also one of the most expensive place to live/be housed, so even when we are utilizing the newest strategies, we face considerable challenges.

The fact is that the problems, causes and solutions for homelessness are all more complicated than the discourse that we see in political campaigns. Despite this, I have seen 2 mayors campaign on the backs of the homeless. Jordan came with a law and order approach (anyone remember the Matrix?), but never instituted systems to help prevent those caught in the net from again becoming homeless after being discharged. Brown has cleaned up some parts of the city, but very selectively, and as far as I can tell only when visibility was affecting develop-ability on the given street/block. (Those french toilets look great, but we obvoiusly need more of them, eh DSX?) Jordan/Matrix is long gone, and even Willie's somewhat effective "Office on Homelessness" was cut from the budget and will evaporate in January.

So to some extent, we are once again starting over. And yet again, we have one candidate who has made homelessness the centerpiece of his platform. Please skip all the rhetoric and position papers, and simply ask 1) who do you trust to deal with this intractable problem honestly, and work toward long-term solutions in mind? ; 2) who is likely to be able to build the consensus on the board needed to implement a plan?

I support MG, but I must also admit that there is some chance that either of these candidates will do at least as well as their predescesors on this issue. Gavin's republican side scares me, but maybe the Billy Clinton types in the demo party will help keep him honest.

Whatever you do today, please join me in wishing good riddance to Da Mayor, who managed to avoid dealing with this and many other problems of ours despite the huge budgets associated with the late 90s boom years. That is the real Shame of Our City story that the Chronicle should be running ...

What to do? I have been a renter & business owner in one of the worst neighborhoods in the city (country?) for 12 years- the Sixth St. Corridor. (Maybe that is why I can't get too worked up when "local" threatens violence or intimidation in the water- I know he hasn't a gun or knife on him! I guess that is a different story though...) The piss and shit and intransigence are overwhelming some days. Loon is exactly right when he speaks of the chronically homeless, i.e. dual diagnosis people, as the most visible and expensive face of the homeless problem. There are people on the streets that have no business anywhere but in full time locked down psych care because they are not equipped to function responsibly in any social context. This is not anyone's fault and neither candidate is going to be able to "solve" this problem.

San Francisco is faced with the same problem every city in the US faces- coupled with a unique climate/ geography that exacerbates the homeless issue that we all deal with to a greater of lesser degree and that every major metropolitan area in the US faces. This problem is an unrealistic federal point of view about "controlled substances" and people's ability to avoid using them in a manner that causes the individual to fall from the confines of "responsible behavior" into the grey area of becoming a social burden.

There are no easy answers to this. It is shameful that Brown was not more aggressive in facing the problem. It is a shame that political discourse in the US is so polarized that we have lost sight of the idea that a nation is created to benefit the common good of all (the transient population/ taxpayer comment was chilling- not long off a fascist point of view) citizens. Citizens come in all shapes and sizes- we are no longer the homogeneous nation we were fifty years ago. There need to be some new ideas from the top down, but that looks like a long shot.....

So what to do? I wish I fucking knew. I guess I'll just keep calling the DPW to steam clean the crap off of my door step, vote for another mayor that faces problems bigger than any one man can solve and keep trying to find solice at the beach.

Shralp, I've spent some time in Ecuador, but I didn't fly in or out I always came in from either Columbia or Peru. I would suggest not bringing a board and picking up a fresh balsa in Montanita. They shape nice foam too.

As an SF homeowner (not that it matters) and a SFpublic school teacher I support Gonzalez, Nuisance is the same old bull shit frat boy politics. To think that a conservative (relative) mayor will make prop value or the economy better is a load of crap, look at our countries position now.
