E's Surf Report: big.. no surf for me..

check the Mav's cam and saw people out in the water..i'll bet it's going off out there.

E-is this a first for you passing up big surf???

actually Scott.. i pass up on the big surf fairly often.. when it starts pushing double overhead at OB and it's not spaced out (long-period swell with no local wind, etc.) i usually pass on paddling out.. i'm not really a big-wave charger, although i like to surf big waves.. i love the feeling of paddling down the face a bit on the 8ft+ mackers, then standing and flying down the face, board-chattering and eyes tearing.. then laying down a elongated bottom turn and looking at the huge wall that you're about to race along.. but.. when it's huge and gnarly.. i usually pass.. try to surf the jetty for the points, or even lindy or up in marin or santa cruz..

E, checked the coast as well this a.m. and headed to Mavs to check the waves. There were about 6-8 guys out at 7:00 or so and another 6-7 were headed out when I left the lot. The swell was definitely showing from a northerly direction out there, at least it seemed that way to me on the cliff.

Anyway, no real good surf out there up here as you saw it as well. Good amount of sauce out there though. Hopeful that OB tomorrow a.m. will be cranking.

yup i definitely hear ya on that short period gnarly stuff..i think i'd venture out into overhead surf with long periods in between..i tend to get kind of panicky sometimes though..but hey i gotta get over that quick with the season upon us.

I checked out the Lane this morning. Got some pics, but they are trapped in my dig cam since I can't find the darn cable.

Double overhead+ at Middle Peak, with just a little bit of bump. Too bad the tides are so high during the day for this swell.

Saw some nice drops and rides well down into Indicators.

I'm mortal, so charged some more managable headhigh stuff down by the Hook.

sometimes it kind-of sucks around here when the swell is huge.. especially without a low tide..

the hook is so nice too.. if i could have any california wave in my backyard with nobody else on it i might pic the hook.. just so fun and mellow and great for practicing tricks... there probably aren't that many waves on the planet that are as consistently glassy either. too bad that there are usually 3 trillion people on it..

i rode some hook today too. tide was a little thick and swell was a little disapointing. i saw 9.4@20 from 280 degrees and thought for sure head and a half raced down there but it was not to be.

brazilian alex grabbed 3 bombs at mavs today and one just before a clean up set took out the whole lineup so he was the only one not to get the 02-03 season baptismal this morning. i haven't spoke to him but word was mavs was looking real west and 25 foot faces.

lane looked good....shoulda went there. mid peak was whitewatery but of the guys that caught em....no one ever had that airdroppy type take off look. one longboarder in particular was killing those reformy looking high tidy mid peakers.....

sunny so it was no problem in the shorty for me. whole coast was pretty blown out on the return and word was scott creek was showing real west lines as well which created the swing off the reef and many caught insides.....

also saw some guys i know (SC guys) who are regulars at 4 mile and good surfers who said they didnt even check, just went straight to the hook to avoid maxed out 4 mile.

so...today was a lane to east side and mavs kinda day as far as i heard.

anyone hit up pt arena?

Actually, I think there were 4 trillion people at the Hook today. Guess that figures since it sounds like it was one of the only places really working today. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better conditions for all.

Glad I got to do some sessions at OB earlier this month, since at one point I got stuck inside for what seemed like 15 minutes as set after set landed on my head. However, it was nothing like a good OB spanking (Santa Cruz point breaks are just too easy sometimes).

Will hope to get some more tomorrow.
