mellow with sections

not too bad out there this morning.. it looked small from the parking lot but then ended up packing a punch once out there.. I surfed VFWs from 6:30-8. SF buoy is 5ft 8sec but it seemed that some south groundswell was sneaking in every 5 minutes or so.. the sea surface wasn't too bad as the wind remained calm... though it's picking up slowly now.. I had a nice peak all to myself for about 20 minutes.. then this group of 4 surfers paddled out right to me! I was bummed and paddled away to a lesser peak... but i still snaked a bunch of rides.. you could either chill on the outside today and wait for the infrequent but nicely peeling bombs, or prowl on the inside and try to pick off tons of little sections. I managed some power carves (at least "power" for me) on a few rights.. I'm starting to be able to go "off the bottom, off the top, off the bottom, off the top" now.. so that feels good.. It really comes down to being balanced and aggressive starting at the take-off.. then it takes just a subtle directional change to redirect the speed gained through the drop into the bottom turn.. then it's all about unleashing the energy and power of the amassed speed into the top-turn/cutback.. i've been really trying to exhale and fully extend through my top-turns/cutbacks.. especially when the wave eases up at the end of a peeling section.. that's when i know i can unload all the speed and energy i have into a turn. Next for me is learning how to really *snap* off the top.. instead of just turning off the top.. i want to be able to do one, quick, lightning *THWACK* right off the critical section at the top of the wave.. then airdrop back into the face.. again it's all about a good bottom turn.. then channelling the speed back up the face of the wave.. then initiating the turn at the exact right time.. then letting the wave do the work for you. i've felt a few good *thwacks*.. they feel reeaaall good.. i want more!!

anyhoo.. if any of you have insight about this please post a comment!

also.. check out the pics below from Sloat on July 30th..

It still amazes

(I'm not sure what happened to my post but here it goes again)

It still amazes me how damn smooth and glassy it was that morning of the 30th and how crappy it was later that same night. Damn wind!

Posted by: hicana at August 1, 2002 10:09 AM

Can't get anything done at work. Been outta the water for over a week. All I can think about is SURF. Gonna leave early and try to get some.

Posted by: germ at August 1, 2002 10:35 AM

i hear you hicana.. i basically make it a point to dawn patrol every day in the spring/summer.. the wind just KILLS IT around these parts during the spring/summer.. though the south wind recently is much more forgiving and surfable than the normal NW wind that just thrashes everything.. remember to check out Lindy/Rockaway when the wind is out of the S or SW and then if it's out of the NW or N remember the Princeton Jetty.. protected down there.. but you need swell..

then when september rolls around.. bring on the offshores!!!

Lerm.. go get some waves my brotha. the wind's not too bad yet (7knots) at 12:30..

Ya, it's not just the wind screwing it up for me in the evenings. It's the damn high tide mushing everything out, or just flat out (no pun intended) making all but the shore break disappear.

How's Linda Mar been the last few nights? I'm assuming small, crowded and only breaking in a couple spots on the whole beach...if anywhere.

Posted by: hicana at August 1, 2002 01:02 PM

damn, ethan. those photos make me want to do the dawn thing. i just have a tough time getting out of bed, but if that's how good it is. SHIT, i think i may have to rearrange my thinking and schedule.... sloat last night was kinda craze. some power chest high sets unloading on the sand.... you know when it's straight down into a foot of water that's sucking sand... i took a beating. hate the steep drops... it sounds silly, but i got a nice hold down yesterday. one of the longest all summer. yarrr.... e, i hear ya on the lip. friends have told me that i spray some... i just try and snap it as hard as i can... but i sometimes lose the wave... it's fun though.

Posted by: trippe at August 1, 2002 01:24 PM

those onshores work my nerves too..makes me want to work nights so i can just surf every morning instead of after work.

trippe .. the pictures of July 30 represent the glassiest it's been all spring/summer.. seriuosly.. it was a freak morning and i'm psyched that i caught it. but.. actually.. the morning low-tide with the south wind in the morning down at Rockaway saw some super glassy/offshore conditions last week.. the afternoons have been rough..i can't believe that you guys surf in the arvo.. that's hard-core! today might be ok though.. the wind isn't raging right now.. I DEFINITELY recommend dawn patrol for the best conditions in spring/summer.. i generally go to bed after simpsons (11:30) then wake up at 6:08 and hit that shit!

look for my black jetta with sugarbowl sticker in the mornings if you want to say hi.. i currently surf a green SF shortboard.

... also.. nice on the snaps trippe.. i'm still trying to get my turns snappy..

Killer sites, pope (damn, you've been at it for a long time) and black (excellent bay area stuff)!!!

Oops... I dug a little deeper, pope, and saw you've only been doing SB Surfing since May. I saw archives back to 1995 and my jaw dropped. Killer stuff nonetheless!
