Jack and Trevor grew up together in Kill Devil Hills NC, OBX.
Their pops moved from Fayetteville NC in the 70s.
Carpenter jobs were in high demand as Outer Banks vacation homes
spawned like mad.
The boys grew up a bit wild.
Their parents adhered to the Rousseauian, back-to-nature philosophy of child-rearing.
Fishin’ and crabbin’ in the bay.
The occasional scrap with a neighboring bully.
Teenage years brought on surfing.
Lots of it.
Also metal music.
Slayer, Pantera, Metallica, Suicidal Tendencies.
Jack got a drumset. Trevor picked up an ax.
Their friend Pete played the bass.
Nine Volt Tongue was born.
The band started playing summer parties at friend’s houses and on the beach.
Their sound was countrified metal.
Like a hard, twisted Allman Brothers.
A few of the parties got wild.
Whiskey + hundreds of 16 yr olds = mayhem.
Fights, sex, vomit, craziness.
After high school, when most of their cohorts were either college-bound or jobless/shiftless.
Nine Volt Tongue took it on the road.
First an east coast tour.
They played Atlanta, DC, Baltimore.
College towns too.
They caught waves in Jersey before playing in Red Hook.
A year later they were getting popular.
Interview in Decibel magazine.
Mad myspace friends.
Another east coast tour.
A huge storm threatened offshore before their show in Wrightsville Beach.
Thunder and lightning 5 or 6 miles out to sea.
Thundering, unruly barrels.
The boys enjoyed a thrilling session.
A black, emotive sky framed the leviathan A-frame peaks.
Weighless, last-second air-drops into imperfect snaking sections.
Dudes in town for the show surfed with them.
Fans hooted them into gems.
Post-sesh, pre-show some fans invited them back to their hotel room.
New High on Fire DVD.
These fans then told the band that a bunch of chicks from the local college were huge
Nine Volt Tongue maniacs and were coming to the show.
Jack, Trevor and Pete were all ears.
Not much groupie love as of yet for the boys.
The show was kick-ass.
Nine Volt Tongue responded to the boom/crack of the storm outside with their own
The UNC chicks were there, as promised… hot and evidently wet from the rain outside and
sweaty mosh-pit inside.
They were giving the band members that look. Hungry.
After the show Nine Volt’s road manager invited the girls backstage.
These girls were cool as shit.
They were into the metal scene.
They’d been listening to Nine Volt’s first album non stop all year.
One chick leaned up close to Pete and mentioned that she’d even been masterbating to the
power ballad he wrote.
One thing led to another and the band went back to the UNC girl’s hotel rooms.
